Huh...I always thought of Irish as a dude, but for some reason I thought losingmymind was a guy as well! But I'm a lady, so maybe there's something else at play here...is it our names, or our avatars, or the tone of our posts that make people assume gender?

Damn, I'm not doing too well here. Thought you were yet another male originally--then thought you were female--then you went to being both, 1/2 male, 1/2 female. Interesting, eh?

I'm so excited, my letters of recommendation are done a day early so my late application to New Mexico may actually get there by Friday morning!

$60 in postage... *tries not to think about it* It'll all be worth it if this works for me. The research areas are so perfect.

And about the gender thing, I assumed Irish was a guy 'cause for some reason I have the idea that Colorado only HAS guys. I've never known a girl from there. lol

And I'm a girl, if anyone couldn't tell by my excessively wordy replies. 😀

That's great, but $60 in postage?! Damn, girl (woo hoo, I got one correct!), and I was complaining about my postage costs but not nearly the same for one application. G'luck! :luck:

Man, and here I thought I oozed girliness! Hah!

You'd think this group, of all groups, would less quickly assume things about the other members.

Off to shop for my interview! (I'm ALL girl! Haha!)

pfft, I absolutely detest shopping--you wanna do mine for me? I've got a few things I need picked up but don't feel like looking for them. It will just make me crabby.

Yesterday I tried to calculate how much I paid in postage for applications. The problem is that I live in Canada and our postal service enjoys robbing us. hehe. So I think it's somewhere around $300.

Yessss, I did my shopping last night. It was the most stress relieving thing I've done in the last few weeks. Enjoy!

And I'm a girl, if anyone couldn't tell by my excessively wordy replies. 😀

And RayneeDeigh, I totallly knew you were a girl from post 1. Just knew it.

I got an interview at City university of New york yesterday and it landed in my junkmail box... so be sure to check it regularly!

Hey! Did your cuny invite look like a mass email?

Not concerning male/female but concerning sexual preferences, so semi-related. 😀

In one of my undergrad classes, prof gave everyone slips of papers "assigning" us our sexual preference (hetero- or homosexual). We weren't supposed to show anyone in the class. Everyone had to go around and talk to everyone else in the class for a few minutes to determine what sexual preference was for each person. You could not simpy ask the person, "Are you 'x' or 'y'?" Then, at the end of class, the prof took tallies for each student on how many thought that person was straight/gay. T'was amazing the number of people who were assumed to be homosexual . . . particularly since the prof later revealed that everyone had the same slip of paper that said something along the lines of 'be whatever your true sexual preference is'.

Got a few laughs out of the exercise but at the same time, makes you stop & think!

With being a donor, one of the benefits is being able to delete your own posts. I very nearly deleted the first post of this thread (which may have even deleted the whole thread, I don't know). That would have been REALLY REALLY bad. I do have a backup of it but it isn't all that recent (I will get a new one). Dang I should be more careful!

Also, just a random thought...isn't it funny how oftentimes on these message boards you assume people are like you? I know there are a few other guys on this board but it was always a silent assumption in the back of my mind that many posters like Sorg and Psychiety (I probably messed up your names, sorry) were also guys...but I don't think that is the case. Just a random thought.

Alright, enough with this random post. Sorry, 4 hours is just not enough sleep!

Hmm, my wife would disagree.

Oof talk about second guessing yourself haha...am I giving off some sort of femme-vibe?? Haha just kidding, it's all good....😱

Hope we don't give anyone a complex with this  And your blog was the only thing that corrected my assumption. Took me a few seconds to realize that the pic was YOU and not someone else.

Just called graduate secretary at Uni. Tennessee and apparently all calls from POIs to applicants went out this week (Ad Com met last Friday). The interview date is 2/23, as I mentioned earlier.

Secretary felt all interviews had been extended.

Wouldn't that be an awesome study to do? Give people some paragraphs written by men and women and get the participants to say whether they think the author was a man or a woman, and why.

I'm a dork.

That's alright, I just said that I originally thought Sorg was male when he was really female and just now learned he is male. Oops, lol. You may be a dork but I am a dork and a dufus.

Ha ha! That's fantastic! But I'm assuredly all girl.

Um, speaking of, and I know this should be in the interview FAQ thread, but since we're talking about gender...Ladies, and maybe dudes, could you weigh in on the appropriateness of a (knee-length) skirt instead of pants for interviews?

The issue for me is that I'm exceedingly tall, and I tend to have trouble finding pants that fit right and are long enough. I can, but it's hard. So I opt for skirts a lot. What do you people think?

I think that would be fine, it could look really professional.

I wish I had that problem and wasn't such a shrimp.

I think knee length skirts are classic and sophisticated actually - when done right. 😀

Hey Irish,

I changed my avatar to avoid any more confusion.

I actually have a similar problem because I am short! I can do well with petite skirts, but pants I always need hemmed.

I wore a skirt suit for my interview last week - and I got an acceptance! 😀 Not that you can base anything on that, but from the 25 people there, I think only 4 girls were wearing skirts. I didn't feel out of place wearing one, though, as long as you wear it with confidence! Go with what you are most comfortable in, and it sounds like it's a skirt!

These posts have been quite amusing this morning. I'd have to say I've been pretty accurate in determining who is a male vs. female. I think the name and the responses are quite indicative of gender in some cases. Also, on one of these psych. websites, I read that males use 7,000 words per day versus females who use 15,000....i was wondering if they were referring to typing on the computer as well.....very interesting. 🙂

Agreed; I think knee-length skirts can be a really sophisticated/professional look, as long as you don't wear 4-inch spike heels 🙂 It's also frequently easier to find flattering skirt-suits than it is to find flattering pants-suits, if you're still in the market.

Me, I'm just trying to figure out how to take the shoulder pads out of mine. 🙂

That is all really good advice, people! I think I WILL wear a skirt! I figured it would be fine, but one or two people I know advised against it. I'm confident I can do it tastefully...no clear heels here.

I was gonna dye my hair blue over the holidays but then I remembered that I could have interviews.

That would have been interesting.

not really... it specified with profs to get in touch with to set up my interview-- they probably use a form letter and replace the important info.

I have also chosen an avatar to express my true identity.

Had a change of heart, put up my sports hero

Hi All,

I just got a snail mail notification from U of F, clinical and health psychology program, (dated 2/3/07) saying that I was an alternate and am not invited to their interview weekend (3/9-10), but that I might be called for a phone interview up to and including 4/13--wouldn't that be last minute!

Anyway, just letting people know that U of F sent out notices by regular mail.

Ella_Mental... is that you waiting by the phone to hear from programs??? I think I understand why you haven't heard from U Tenn... they only invite people with a full body!

haha definitely I am a female. Paramour, what made you think I was a dude? Just curious!

and sorg, by saying your wife would disagree, that means nothing seeing where we live  (well for the time being, anyway!)

oh and to keep on track, anyone know what schools tend to offer second waves of interviews? Or how often that happens? I am totally psyched re: the interviews I have now, but am wondering.

--Rachel (see? 😀 )

Good question, Rachel. I really am wondering that myself. From what I heard from some fellow applicants, it changes year to year. Though, if you look at the stats for # offers / # attending, that will probably be telling as well.

Also, guesses on my name? Hmmmm.

I was waitlisted for an interview at NW Feinberg and I LOVE that program. I am certainly stoked about the ones I do have, but still...

Any chance anyone would turn down a NW interview? 😀

For some reason I def. thought you were a guy!! 😳

wow, i've never heard of being waitlisted for an interview! this is getting worse and worse!

So the grad secretary said they had already invited their first pick interviewees, and that they "always have a back-up list of people" that I am apparently on. She said I should move ahead with other offers and that if I were eventually invited they'd be "flexible" about my schedule for an interview.

I interpreted that to mean "waitlisted for an interview".

Booooo.

haha @ the fact people thought I was a guy-- but serotonin is such a girlie neurotransmitter! All warm fuzzies!
