Hey there everyone! Figured I'd start this thread since I recently started preparing for the June 18th MCAT. For those of you who are taking the June 2nd MCAT, June 18th MCAT, or still considering one of those two dates, feel free to post here with any questions, comments, concerns, or support you have to offer!

Good luck to you all! Let's crush it.

What percent correct was that on CARS? The P/S curve seems really sensitive. that's really nice improvement on C/P and B/B though!

I think my percent correct was like 62% on cars, definitely my lowest. I always score at least 70% correct on Kaplan, and got 75% on the unscored - attributing the decrease to my lack of sleep and the fact that I didn't eat anything for breakfast 😕

Just finished looking over the AAMC Scored, got a 512 (130/127/127/126). That, along with a 71/81/92/86 on the Sample FL should have me set for a 512+, right?

That's a great score! Would you mind giving the percentages correct for each section on the scored? Just so I know how many questions i need to get right lol

So no phones or watches? How do we keep track of time on breaks? Will there be giant clocks everywhere?
There will be a clock in your break area. You are responsible for keeping track of your own time. Everyone on our breaks basically stood in front of the clock and stared a lot. Make sure to give yourself two minutes or so from finishing your break to when you need to restart, checkin can take a few minutes.

On that note, for everyone, wear relatively loose fitting clothes. Every time you check in (4 times if you take every break), they make you roll up your sleeves, lift up your pant legs, and pull out your pockets. When I took the GRE I wore skinny jeans and I ended up taking zero breaks because it was too much of a hassle and took too long to roll up my pant legs.

What do you suggest regarding food during 30min break?
Also, within the 10 min break, is it enough time to go to the restroom and take care of the business? 😀 What if I need to pee during the test? adult diaper?

About to take the unscored this morning, shooting for a 77% overall

EDIT: Meant to say 77%, not 75%

This may seem like an odd question, but does anyone have advice on how to fall asleep the night before test day? It's 2 days before my test and I'm already getting really anxious at night and am not able to fall asleep until late. I don't want to take anything that will leave me feeling foggy the next morning.

I took the 5/20 exam. The 10 min breaks were long enough for me to drink a little water, use the restroom, put in eye drops, and apply Chapstick.

The 30 min was long enough to do all of the above, plus eat a little, and socialize a little with the others.

I had some snacks with me from my Graze deliveries--dried fruit, nuts, etc.

I'm having the same struggle. I've been forcing myself to wake up early but still, as soon as I lay down in bed my mind starts racing and I can't fall asleep. Last night, I took half a benadryl and that seemed to help a bit without making me too drowsy this morning. You may want to try something like that out tonight so you can see how you feel tmrw morning.

I was having the same issue. I've been using a trick since high school to help me sleep, and it's to do cognitive excercises so that you stop thinking about anything related to whatever's stressing you out. It's sort of like meditation where you have to be mindful and control your thoughts, except what I do is just "daydream" about anything and everything that's completely not possible in the real world. It's almost like you're preparing your brain for some whacky dreams. Try it out tonight!

I'm just trying to weigh the confidence buster vs. the marginal benefit of getting them all done in 2 days... Some of those questions in the BioChem I have never heard of and ive actually recently taken biochem and read the entire Kaplan book. What is that?!
Yeah make sure you do them all. Don't worry about your score. They were essential for me because there were a few terms that I saw many times on the SB that weren't in EK or Kaplan Biochemistry. I got super pissed at first and then realized how much better it is to be seeing it now while we still have a chance to learn it. I had a great improvement between my unscored and scored AAMC FL and I 100% credit the section banks.

Anyone getting nervous about the test? I don't know what, but I woke up this morning thinking about the test and it scared the crap out of me. I think because this time, it is real so there is a lot of pressure to do well. I never felt nervous when I took the practice tests (I was actually excited lol).

in neuropharm this year we learned that sleep aides reduce memory consolidation during REM (including benadryl), so I stopped using them all together

Just got through the C/P on the AAMC sample test. I'm such an idiot. I ran out of time and had to guess on about 6.. 3 of them I 100% could have gotten if I had the time. I need to learn to LET GO when I'm using up too much time on a question. Frustration.

I did the exact same thing. So frustrating! Remember this on Saturday. Just picture me yelling at you to make your best guess and move on when you're spending more than a couple minutes on a question. Better to miss that one than have to guess on 6-10 at the end (i legit couldn't read the last passage and had to guess completely on all of those questions plus the final discretes).

What's everyone up to today? My plans are to go through the section banks again (it's a lot faster when you've already read all the passages) and then drill stuff that i keep putting off. tomorrow i'm going to do light review of some psych terms and then go to my testing center in the morning to make sure it's there.

I am going to review all my missed questions on section banks and practice tests, do some CARS and review notes. Tomorrow I am getting my hair done, going for lunch with other humans and doing yoga!!! AHHHHH I'm so excited since it's been so long since doing this and I barley even brush it my hair anymore!! I'd suggest doing something that excites you the day before test to get you mind off of it. (yes i've looked like a dirty hippy while studying for MCAT)

Reviewing the AAMC Scored FL I took yesterday, then Section Bank review for the 3rd time. Going to try and complete the CARS II Question Pack since I'm trying the "doodle notes" idea and I did terrible on the Scored CARS.
Oh, and cramming P/S since that's what all the cool kids are doing.

I need a haircut soooo badly. It's in the works for the week after the mcat, along with getting the air conditioner fixed in my car which just decided to stop working this week. 🙁

My breakdown was 90/77/81/81 (the curve on psych felt brutal, surprised with a 127 tbh)

Do we need to know the specifics of ventral horn vs. dorsal root neurons? I haven't touched Kaplan's bio book at all because I already have handwritten study guides from my physiology class last semester, so I'm not always 100% sure how much detail we need to know

Welcome

I probably will be another one after I take my scored exam tomorrow.

I too need to study PS part hard.

Go through section banks if you haven't! If you have, then study the sh** out of SB for that section.
Thank you! Will do! Hope everything goes well on the practice test, thou. Stay positive. 🙂

Honestly, I don't think you need to know detailed detailed

the way I'm going about it is knowing that the afferent go through the DRG in the dorsal horn and hit the ventral effectors (sometimes via interneuron) to activate the contractile muscle fibers

Okay great, that's the easier stuff anyways lol. What about cholinergic nicotinic vs. cholinergic muscarinic vs. adrenergic receptors in sympathetic vs. parasympathetic pathways? Sorry I'm asking you...I'm at the library and didn't bring any of my books with me

edit: i know which ones are which but just want to know if they're worth memorizing for the exam 😛

Yeah I've seen those pop up occasionally (not sure if it was in AAMC material or not) so I think they're worth knowing. Especially since they're fairly straightforward.

Can someone help me out on this question. Why is the mRNA produced from retrovirus exactly the same when it comes to the nucleotide sequence? I am referring to question 19 on the section bank (biochem). Thanks in advance

So we know from the passage that they are talking about HIV, which is a retrovirus. Retroviruses have vRNA (viral RNA) that they inject into the host cell. Reverse transcriptase in the cytosol transcribes this into DNA, which gets inserted into the host cell genome.

Now what happens? The host genome (and inserted section) gets transcribed into RNA, which is used to make proteins. The question gave us the mRNA sequence. We need to figure out the vRNA. Which is the same thing now. Does that make sense?

But doesn't the question say its inserting vDNA?

I feel so tired today and just can't focus. 🙁 maybe a bit of burnout combined with having taken benadryl last night? I'm a bit concerned about my sleep schedule as I have tickets to game 6 of the nba finals tonight and can't bring myself to sell the tickets. i'll just have to force myself to wake up early tomorrow and hope that fatigue helps me fall asleep friday night.

oh! you're saying that the retrovirus initially inserts mRNA. then reverse transcriptase gives you cDNA. go that with DNA poly III and ligase to form dsDNA, which is the same as viral DNA
Kind of, I think you got it! The "cDNA" is transcribed from the vRNA, which is why I called that the vDNA. But otherwise, yes! This is how retroviruses work, they use the host cell machinery to transcribe and insert into the genome. Good work!

Aw snap, are you in Cleveland too? My friend wants to go to the viewing thing outside the Q but I know it will throw off my sleeping schedule. DAMN YOU MR MCAT

I am sooooo tired too ! I think we are just slowly burning out from all of the studying. My focus is all over the place. I can't wait for all of this to be over with. But luckyyyy, I wish I had tickets to the game tonight. That's awesome ! You should definitely go. Nothing wrong with a little treat to yourself for all of the hard work you put into studying for this exam.

Yes!!! I have half season tickets, and I was praying we'd play OKC because then we would've had home court and I wouldn't have had to worry about this haha. I kept telling myself I could sell the tickets, but there's no way. Plus, I'd want to watch the whole game at home anyways so it's just driving time that i'm really adding on. I was planning on taking June 2nd almost with the sole reason of being done before the finals, but i didn't register fast enough and that date filled up everywhere. 🙁 It is fun outside the Q, you should go. 😉

Thanks for the reassurance! haha hopefully it'll help take my mind off things. I haven't been sleeping great anyways so i'm prob missing out on an hour of sleep tops. And yeah, focusing is sooo challenging today. What are you trying to get done?

I brought a variety of snacks: beef jerky, pretzals, dark chocolate, dark chocolate/sea salt/mixed nut kind bar, Gatorade, Dr pepper, some altoids. Also packed a floss stick and chapstick. I went to the bathroom on each break and there was just enough time to collect myself and get back. If for some reason you need to pee during the test and it's not break time, you can leave it at any time but the clock is still running and you have to run through the check in procedures.

For 30 minute break, Im wolfing down a peanut butter- jelly sandwich (sweet and peanut butter, what more do you want?), and I have backups of Chipotle chips, Teddy Grahams, and dark chocolate bars for energy during the 10 minute breaks. Im prob gonna end up bringing Snickers too just in case my stomach doesnt behave and gets hungry. Im gonna be the guy looking like a bum, too: sweatpants and a loose long-sleeve shirt. Whatever, might as well be comfortable.

Another thing you may consider if you have time is bringing advil/tylenol, my friend got a headache in the middle of CARS... but luckily had some

I feel like the kid that graduated high school and always came back, constantly lurking this thread and what not.

But so for all of you caffeine junkies, I highly suggest the caffeine pill route. Never had a single bathroom problem throughout the test, still went on every break though just incase. However, I took 200mg before the test(bout 30mins or so) and it started wearing off around the end of C/P. So I decided to take another 200mg before CARS, I was super wired and sweating like crazy. Probably was a tad much. Once I got to lunch the wired-ness continues so I thought I'd be good for the rest of the MCAT. But I ended up crashing HARD about halfway through B/B. Which is normally my best section but now I'm feeling quite negative about it. So I popped another caffeine pill right before P/S, carried me right through real quick. Overall with caffeine YMMV!!!(know your tolerance and what not) if you don't regularly take caffeine I suggest avoiding it. I'm currently in post-MCAT anti-caffeine ~healthy lifestyle~ recovery lol, trying to cut all this junk food/easy studying meal weight.

You guys have worked so hard for this for so long, and your score will no doubt reflect how hard you worked!!!! Just go in there knowing that you are going the kill it, just like I know you all will. As much as it may seem like it at times, this isn't a "know it all" test. Spend quality time reviewing key parts of the passage. Don't spend time trying to understand all the weird convoluted sentences that you won't even be tested on(and if you do get a question it'll be easy to spot out of the passage because how often does the passage say protein AJFAI174281!(/&-&(/)-);&:&]^^#]*%[DJGKAHSNGRJ?). Focus on the important stuff, and the flow of the passage and processes within it. This is an interpretation test, analyze what you is know important(by now your intuition will spot these keys real quick). I have no doubt in my mind that at this point as long you stay focused and utilize these skills you've been practicing for so long you'll destroy this test.

Good luck to all of you!!!! I'll be here lurking this thread for your reactions tomorrow!

It really does feel like a friday haha. I dread being in your shoes and having to wait for our scores.... As for the caffeine, when i took the scored, I took excedrine (has caffeine) plus drank a coffee drink plus drank coke at lunch and by the end i was shaking. I do think it helped me, though, because I got my highest score ever in every section. Just trying to decide if my adrenaline combined with the caffeine will put me over the edge...

Yeah haha, I've even been keeping myself busy building my ECs before I submit(I decided to wait for my score since I get it right when I get my summer grades) and I still find time to spend too much time on here and siting around thinking of every possible score combination I think I could get lol. I wouldn't be too worried about that part though if I were you! You have a 7pt buffer from your scored to your original goal(if I recall correctly) Chances are you'll go even higher than your scored anyways!

I think you'll be able to make that decision the morning of! I was nervous as heck, but fixed that with some positive thinking and jamming to my "you can do this" playlist. Yet even with my nervousness I was super foggy and not 100% there, so I went for the caffeine. But i blame that on not adjusting my sleep schedule prior lol.

also, it takes caffeine 90 minutes to metabolize to full strength and it lasts ~4 hours, so make sure to drink coffee when you leave home and potentially during your 1st break so you dont crash

thanks again, neuro pharm!

so i just went over my AAMC scored and i changed in PS, wait for it.......

15 answers from right to wrong because i second guessed myself. i would have gotten a 90%

i need to give myself a motivational pep talk before i go in to the exam and say "DONT CHANGE ANSWERS"

It's sort of like a true/false test at times. It's not particularly difficult to get MOST answers down to 2 choices -- but that "which does the passage support more"/"which is the most right"/"this is true but doesn't apply exactly to the question stem" types are infinitely frustrating.

4 of the 6 questions I missed on the AAMC Scored FL B/B section were related to the kidney and/or its hormone regulation. Looks like I know what I'll be brushing up on today and tomorrow!

DIDN'T I TELL YOU TO QUIT THAT

So I'm doing the Next step Test 1 now, and I'm worried because it's harder than AAMC, but people say the scores you get on NS are comparable to the actual thing. This is freaking me out.
