Hey there everyone! Figured I'd start this thread since I recently started preparing for the June 18th MCAT. For those of you who are taking the June 2nd MCAT, June 18th MCAT, or still considering one of those two dates, feel free to post here with any questions, comments, concerns, or support you have to offer!

Good luck to you all! Let's crush it.

Walloobi, please teach us how to get the cars score.
I actually tried a new technique today, now that you mention it. I'd noticed that I tend to score very well on passages that I found interesting and entertaining, so today, even on the incredibly boring passages (of which there were many - I'm looking at you, passage #8), I tried to convince myself that I was super interested in what the passage was talking about. I think that may have given me the extra boost necessary to intensely pay attention to all the relevant details. It was grueling, though, and at the end of that section I felt super drained and discouraged, evidenced by my post in this thread during my 30-minute break haha. A similar method is to imagine that you're having a conversation (or an argument) with the author, and try to be overly-emotional and overly-engaged in everything s/he says.

This is what I try to do as well. I found most of the passages to be super boring on this CARS except for the book one and final passage which was mildly amusing. Which one was 8 without giving anything away? The historical passage? If so almost every single question I missed was from that passage.

8 was the absolutely riveting one about architectural paint research.. so incredibly dull haha

Edit: AAMC, if you're reading this, please don't punish me for making fun of your passages 😉

On aamc material, if you choose "show solutions" does that mean it'll give you the solution after you answer the question? Or will it already have the solution there for you? Just wondering before I do the question packs on thursday

You can click a "Show Solution" button on every problem, so you can try to do it on your own first before seeing the answer if you want to

Oh yeah... For whatever reason I was able to get into that one LOL. I have more issues with economics passages...

You'll have to click a tab to see the solution!

Yeah, well if you guys have a magic hand at philosophy, help a guy out, because its amazing I dont get negative points on those passages.

something that helped me be able to actually sit through and read philosophy passages was reading some random philosophical arguments, like those from plato, socrates, aristotle, etc. look up the mind-body problem! for some reason every philosophy passage i've come across has something to do with dualism vs. monoism. you don't have to commit the information to memory of course but will help you with the exposure

I hate philosophy passages. I always find them very hard to understand. I had a really hard one in TPR FL.

I can't decide if i should re-do my AAMC scored now that i've gone over all of my weak material sections

Guys, besides NS1 that i'm doing tmmrw, any more suggestions? Did all AAMC materials, been over them 5 million times, and did EK and khan academy. Should I go over the Q packs or do something else?

Man... just finished C/P section bank... I got 66% 🙁 Yeah the people said about gel electrophoresis. Wayyyy too many questions... Time to search them up and learn what they do!

Ugh why did I read the score release posts?! Literally does no good. 3 more weeks. I feel like I can't even have a realistic feeling on how I did anymore positive or negative. It's like the test is a huge block in my brain that I barely remember.

Took the AAMC Scored FL today, got a 524 (132/132/130/130). Someone please pinch me so I know this is real
So since you're good to go for Ivy Leagues with that score, you get to sit under a palm tree with some banana leaves and answer everyone's questions with your expertise.

So my MCAT is in 4 days and I just realized that my first name (I have a foreign name) on AAMC is one word but on my license there's a space in between my first name I.e BohnJu on aamc and Bohn Ju on my license. I always write my first name as one word (my credit cards and everything else is one word) except my license and passport name. I've never had a problem with this and have taken several pro metric tests without a problem but I'm worried this might be a problem??!

I'm going to be so frustrated if they don't let me write over something trivial like this. Im obviously the person on the ID and AAMC. I'm planning on bringing all identification I have just in case. Do you guys think this will reasonably work?

A lot of foreign names are spaced differently when coming over to the U.s

I'd call them today and see what they recommend! I called before and they were very helpful. (202)828-0600

What's a fast way to analyze the charge of a peptide when they give you a string of 15 amino acids with only the single letter codes (specifically referring to #51 on CP section bank) besides writing down the peptide, crossing out the neutral aa's, labeling each charged aa, and then comparing against the other choices (cause that's taking way too long)
You can see which ones have an R group that actually contributes to the overall charge. Keep in mind, the amide bond isnt gonna have any charge (in a 15 peptide chain, there are 14 amide bonds. dont need to worry about it)
1) Look at each of the R groups for each peptide. If you have AA down like the alphabet, it should shout out at you
2) look at the LAST NH3 and the LAST COOH to determine the charges on those
3) count it up 🙂

Do you have any topics that you keep telling yourself you'll look at them later? maybe review glycolysis/gluconeogenesis/blah blah metabolic pathways? Otherwise you should be good. just review high yield stuff to keep it fresh in your mind.

It's making me feel like I need to know how to read blots really well for the actual exam. And I'm getting towards the end getting a lot of specific enzyme questions for glycolysis, gluconeogenesis and the citric acid cycle. EK doesn't go into any of this in its books, it just talks about what goes in and what comes out.

I memorized glycolysis and the C.A.C., but now I'm looking into at least knowing the enzymes of the rate-limiting steps. Is this correct?

Glycolyses: Phosphofructokinase
C.A.C.: Isocitrate Dehydrogenase
Gluconeogenesis: F-1,6-Biphosphatase
Glycogenesis: Glycogen Synthase

Yeah I'm focusing on metabolic pathways for my last two days after doing the section bank and seeing how much detail we need to know (aka a lot of detail). If you already have the steps memorized then I agree, highly regulated steps or any steps where different pathways diverge or converge should be the right thing to focus on. Also agree that different types of PAGE and blots are important. I feel weakly prepared for this bc I swear they were barely even a section of a chapter in EK.

Completely agree on EK lacking in the lab techniques. I read through that section 3 times and there isn't enough information to answer the QPack questions.

Hey at least we're finding out now instead of Saturday!

I ended up using notes/a lecture from my biochem class last semester which was literally every technique covered for the mcat at the functional level

helped so much considering the books only gave a super high level

I don't get it
I got a 12 on the old CARS section (2014), and now I can only get 126-7 on practice tests. This makes no sense.

I'm debating as to what I should do. I took NS9 yesterday. I've already done AAMC tests (literally a month ago) and the section banks. Should I do NS10 or should i just go through the AAMC material again? try to like retake one of the tests I did a month ago? I doubt i would remember the questions word for word but still I don't want to waste my time

I vote AAMC. It will be a nice confidence boost going into the real thing. And if you remember an answer or two, as long as you completely understand why the correct answer is correct, I see no harm. Just my two cents.

I am redoing the official guide questions, and it's demoralizing me. somehow i'm doing worse on this on my second time than my first time doing the section bank and scored FL. :/

Agreed, you should do AAMC since that will be most representative, while NS is accurate, its still not AAMC.

What are you guys doing today? And are you guys planning on anything for Friday? Im debating whether to do some SB BB on Friday will be too much or not...

Take a break on Friday, go see finding dory 😀

I'm only going to do light review in the morning Friday and then force myself to stop... I keep having dreams of solving problems and I'd like to not have that the night before. If you do end up doing the section banks Friday, maybe try to keep it to under a couple hours and just in the morning?

I'm just redoing AAMC stuff that I've already done.... OG (just science sections), C/P section bank, maybe some of B/B section bank.

Today I'm doing heavy content review and going to end the day by knocking out the P/S section bank. Tomorrow I'm doing the AAMC Unscored, then reviewing all my wrong answers.

Friday I'm going to go through all of my weak areas in the morning, then definitely seeing Finding Dory! Maybe hit the beach or something too... No idea. Happy thoughts.

I think even on Saturday before the test I might read through my notes and stuff to get my brain going.. maybe do a stoichiometry problem or two. I've been trying to wake up at 5am this week so I'm able to run and get brief review in before test time!

Halftime for AAMC Scored
CARS had like 2 passages that I just couldn't get into about education, and C/P was a mix of "Holy ****, a whole passage over that!?" and "Crap, I need to come back and check this calculation.
Extremely nervous about the overall score since this is "THE" indicator of the real thing, especially after reading May 14 score release yesterday. Everyone was right at their Scored mark or 2 points +/-

There was a couple on that C/P for AAMC scored that i was like wtf and had to guess but some of them were straightforward, ugh I hate this test

Take it really easy on your run... I twisted my ankle the morning of my first mcat because i was just thinking about the test so much that i wasn't watching where i was running, and i was in serious pain during the test. it was a worst-case scenario for sure, but just be careful. 😉

I can't believe I am JUST finding this thread! I sooo do not feel ready for this exam! 510 on AAMC practices test but am BOMBING these Section Bank questions, like 50-60%. ARG!

Also taking the scored right now (just finished B/B), and i'm feeling the same as you...not so confident after going through bio which i thought i improved and cars which i have always been comfortable with :nailbiting:
