Hi April 2006 MCATers,

Some posters have requested that we have one serious thread where only announcements and information about the April 2006 MCAT score release are posted. This thread is it. After the scores are released (on JUNE 20TH!!!), y'all can post your scores in here as well. But in the meantime, please while away the time in the Official April 2006 thread so that we can avoid cluttering this one up with unrelated posts. As always, please remember that false score release posts and threads are a no-no, and good luck to everyone waiting. 🙂

I just wanted to congratulate everyone on their MCAT scores! I really enjoyed everyone's posts on the countdown thread. They were very amusing during quite a stressful time 🙂 I hope everyone will continue to post on SDN. I will miss you guys 🙁 Good luck to everyone!

Don't you worry we will all lurk the pre-allo threads now🙂 Someone should make the 2006-2007 progress thead 🙂

Am I an SDN buddy too? I believe at one point I was one of the top 15 posters on the countdown thread 😀

Without a doubt an SDN bud! 😀

I just spent a ridiculous amount on my AMCAS 😱

My highest practice has been a 32 so I was excited to match it. However, looking at this forum makes me less excited about my score. Please remind me that the average for those matriculating is still 30! :scared:

Wow, people say SDN stats are above average, but amongst you regulars, there's an unusually high interest in being a Dr. Dr. You MD/PhDs have way more stamina than I do. Still looking forward to meeting some of you on tours though. I for one will be passing on the extra AMCAS essays and reasearch grilling interviews. 🙂

It isn't so much stamina, or even desire, as circumstance...I am already half way done with a Ph.D. and am about to apply to Med School. If I stop working on the Ph.D., then I'll just have to find something to do with my time next school year while I interview. If I devote that time to keep working on my Ph.D., then I'll only have a year (maybe two depending on my progress) to finish the Ph.D. On top of that, a lot of MD/PhD programs pay for both degrees. So, you end up finishing when you're 30, but you become Dr. squared, are competitive for residencies and versatile career opportunities, and actually made money doing it (versus the thousands in debt that is often the alternative). Even with all of that, I think I might just do an MD on top of my Masters and forget about the Ph.D. just because the whole reason I decided to do med school is because I have not been very interested in Biomedical Engineering and perpetual lab work, but have only been interested in the biomedical part. Very tough decision if the adcoms give me the chance...

Congrats to everyone on their MCAT scores. This is really a smart group of people and it is kind of intimidating. My 32Q makes me really happy, but I feel like I am at the bottom of the curve when I read this discussion.

Anyway, I just wanted to know how competetive my scores are.

How competetive am I applying to California Med Schools.

I'm going to miss this thread too. We'll have to band together in the Allopathic and/or osteopathic threads. Sometimes the allo forum is pretty brutal...

Composite: 31S
Breakdown: PS/VR/BS/WS - 11/10/10/S

Began Studying: 1.5 days prior to test day.

Method: Looked at some EK review material; went over some PS equations, read some BS, glanced over organic.

Major: Just completed second degree in literature and human geography. First degree was in chemistry and math.

Tips: Get a good night's rest. Eat moderately, but make sure you don't fall asleep during the exam (I took some protein bars with me). Make sure you have a decent non-ringing wristwatch.

We're all 😎 in this thread 🙂

Oh, and PS: Those of you who are now finished with the MCAT and who felt very comfortable with the materal should definitely consider helping out in the Study Question subforum!! Ask QofQuimica for details 😀

Wooooooooooooo Freaking Hoooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My friend just told me their MCAT score. This person never got higher then 30 maybe 32 once on her practice tests.

They were consistently scoring 28-30 on Kaplan full lengths and studied hard core this past semester. First time she took it she did horrible. Second time they improved but went down in another section. This time the said person got 35R!!!!!! By the grace of god, her hard work paid off.

Don't give up hope and don't let practice tests intimidate you. Her words to me!!!!! YAY 😀

All of you guys scores are freaking awesome!! You all must be geniuses, or you take test really well, but what ever! I took the Kaplan course, which for me helped tremendously in some areas, others it was absolutely worthless. The full length practice exams were the biggest help for me. My score was consistently 24's with O, P, Q writing. I scored the same 24, P-6, V-10, B-8 and my writing a M. I am pleased with this and will not be retaking the exam and just go with what I've gotten. I studied for this exam quite a bit, along with taking biochemistry and evolution this past semester and working 40-60 hours a week and trying to take time with my kids. I took some time off work before the test and concentrated on the MCAT and still only scored a 24M. How in the world, did you people achieve such phenomenal scores?

I admire all of the effort that you put into it. All you can do is your best. Be sure to work just as hard on the other aspects of your application as the MCAT is just one part. You ill probably have an uphill battle, so don't rule out testing again if it doesn't work out. Don't give up if it is your dream. Some people on here have taken the MCAT 3 times to get their scores. Best of luck :luck:

Hey medic
I am with you. I consistently got 24s and 25s on AAMC practice tests. Then I took the real thing and I got a 22. I want a 28 or 29 so i am retaking in August. I wish I were the people on here that get in the 30's. Wow guys. I envy you. I don't have a lot of free time this summer but i absolutely have to study to do better on the august test. I have never thought of anything but going to med school. I have no back up plan. Please someone help me get a 29 in two months. Advice ????????

I think it really just comes down to hard work and determination. It sounds like you guys have been working hard, but there really are no shortcuts. One thing that helped me was to take lots of practice tests. Also, did you take one of the courses (Kaplan or TPR)? I liked Kaplan for material review, but I didn't like their strategies. But, I have heard that their strategies often can be the difference when someone is in the 20-25 range and trying to do a little better. I don't know anything about TPR. In any case, keep your head up and just keep working. It'll come...

hey, hey, hey
YOU HAVE the two areas that are the "hardest" to study for, VR and the writing. The PS and BS you can increase with time and practice. I'm a Chem/Bio double major and still scored 11/10, AND I SEE THIS EVERY DAY FOR THE LAST 3 YEARS!!! I mean, you really gotta immearse yourself, go over the practice tests and see the topics you struggled with. Then drill yourself. THen drill yourself some more. Make it second nature to answer chemistry and physics questions. THERE are only so many things they can test in PS (less subject matter than BS in my humble opinion) and although it is number intesive, DONT BE SCARED, review the basic exponetial laws, I know ya can add, subtract, and multiply in your head, and numbers ain't anything no more. And familiarize yourself with some common experiments throughout chemistry and physics, cause there is a good chance they can show up. Need any more advise PM me, I'll gladly do what I can, best of luck!

I have a 3.62 overall gpa, 30N on mcat (9 ps, 7 vr, N, 14 bs), fair healthcare experience (1.5 year emt and firefighter, couple months ER volunteer, some research experience).

My advisor says no allopathic school will touch me with a 7 in VR despite getting the 14 in BS. I want to apply to temple, drexel, jefferson, george washington, suny brooklyn and umdnj.

VR: 10 (im fine with that, my EK average was exactly 10, AAMC average was 9 ish, so Im not complaining here)
PS: 11 (pissed the hell out of me... never below 13 on AAMC 3-8... ugh!! i wanna rip my hair out but i love my hair 😛 )
BS: 12 (eh, im ok, i had a tough bio section so i kinda expected the curve to be higher, but i get 12s and 13s with AAMCs)

33M composite (im ok, not escatic, but not like completely upset). i guess i scored within my practice range (33 to 36, average 34s). The good thing is that i got a 10 on VR, and my individual sections are more balanced than my practices (med school prefers a balanced score right? when all scores are above 10)?

I started with Kaplan but I didnt really focus at all. Then i took a year break, and 2 months before April went thru EK (i was pretty bad in physics). APplying this year with NY residence.

Is that a premed advisor or an undergraduate course advisor? If you look through the MSAR, the verbal range starts below a 7. In fact, I think Stanford, a top school, has a range that starts at 4. Maybe these are special cases, but I expect you have a reasonable chance somewhere.

👍 Great job on your scores. You should be very happy. Just keep in mind that others have worked very hard too and are way below that score and trying to improve. Comes off sounding really bad to others when you talk down about your high scores, especially when they just got through posting about trying to even get in high 20's range (see above posts). Best of luck on your application process though. Contratulations. 🙂

Don't worry too much about the 7, especially with that awesome 14. It is true that some people/adcoms may place greater emphasis on the verbal score (rightly or wrongly). And some schools do have a minimum cut off of 8. But others have lower ranges (as was pointed out in an earlier post). I am not sure specifically about the schools that you mentioned, I am researching them myself right now. (I will be applying to all of those too, except Suny). Bottom line is that you got a 30, which is awesome. I also have a 30 with one 7 (in PS) and have gotten a lot of positve feedback from advisors and others in the know.

hey thanks for the input. i didnt mean to come off condensending or trolling (there are so many friggin smart people here! i was just ventin a lil for somethin.) 😛

it's never easy to give up a sure thing. I would first find out exactly what the policy is at your school for withdrawing from the program. Some will not let you apply to that med school as a regular applicant. It might also be a good idea to seak out others who have withdrawn in the passt, that way you can assess whether or not your school blacklists people who withdraw from the program. When all that is done I think you need to ask yourself the two questions: Will I always wonder if I could have done better? Will I regret it if I don't get in anywhere this cycle (because no matter how fabulous your stats it's always a possibility, although it seems very very unlikely in your case.) It's the answer to those two questions that will tell you what you need to do.

best of luck, and keep us posted on how you do :luck:

Thanks for the advice.

Well, I'm glad your folks are nicening up. Mine are terrific, only they didn't consider me very academic until now.

wow, you guys have already checked your score. I'm very nervous checking my mcat score...perhaps I should just do it and get it over and done with.

Ok, so, this is why I resisted registering for this site for so long. I registered 2 days ago, and I am up to 30 posts, and I had a test today and one tomorrow (so, I've been holding back). These boards just suck you in.

Also, I can't see how anyone could go this long without checking their scores. I wouldnt' be able to handle knowing my score is there waiting for me and not checking it. I hope those of you who haven't checked get the courage and are pleasantly surprised...

I understand that you may be disappointed that you didn't score above your curve on your practice exams. But think of it this way. You are in the top 15% of all MCAT takers, world-wide. You have "made it" as far as adcomms are concerned with the MCAT, you knew your stuff! All of your scores are double-digits, so it's a well-balanced score! 👍 And what's the point of the MCAT my friends? To get into medical school, not to get the best score. 🙂

hey, I understnad how ya feel. Example, I never got below a 12 PS on practices and got an 11 on the real thing. haha, but really, its not that big of a deal. Take the extra point ya got in VR (which is a far bigger accomplishment to go all double digits in my opinion) and run with it.
I feel for ya though cause your still hyped up on the MCAT comepativness that is what drives ya to suceed, it's been hard for me to come back down from it.

I had the same deal happen...never got below 9 on VR sections and got an 8 on the April test. I got almost exclusively 11s on PS (many that were 1 point from 12) and had 10 on the April test. But in BS I fluctuated between 9 and 11, and ended up with 10. So the bottom line is, you never know how the curve is going to affect you. Forget about it and worry about those applications! 🙂

EDIT: Just went to my premed advisor today (first time in my life). She said that 29 is a great score and good enough for IU Medschool, but for MD/PhD I would need 38 or 39... I don't think I believe that.

That's ridiculous. No offense to your premed advisor, but she must not have had much experience with successful MD/PhD applicants.
