Official MCW Class of 2009 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm B+ so I only got occasional calls from the blood center.

Hey we're blood type buddies! They don't bug me for blood much, but they are always trying to get me to donate platelets when I come in.

Hey, I'm O- and CMV- too... can't donate packed cells or plasma though, I'm too small.

And I'm not talking about the blood drive, silly, I'm talking about the Senior Gift Drive. Read your emails more carefully.

Senior gift drive? I stand by my original reply.

That's weird that so many of us are O neg. I wonder if there is some genetic factor that predisposes people to spend way too much of their time on internet forums.

I just got called by the Blood Center the other day. I'm A+ (same as my GPA), so they must need my blood.

O-s... just another over-represented minority, much like my people.

I'm coming back to Wisconsin tomorrow. It had better be warm there.

I'm A+. Yeah!!

I'm weird. I know all the blood types of my immediate family. No Os unfortunately. A+ x 3, B+, B- (my mom) and AB+.

that reminds me....in terms of lame useless awards to make people feel better, what are those "POET" pins Froedtert staff are wearing with variable numbers of quill feather pens dangling from them?

POET = Piece of Expensive Trash

I'm A+. Yeah!!

According to the test I did on my blood when I was at home after boards and playing in the lab I used to work in as a phlebotomis, I'm O+, I think my dad's B+, so that makes him BO.

I don't donate blood because I hate needles.

I think my people are even more over-represented, at least at MCW. So there.

I'm completely herpes virus-free.

Yaaaayyy!!!!

I'd say our class has more Mormons than Jews. I can't think of any Jews offhand...I've got some features that make people think I'm Jewish though....

So what are the recommendations for a psych location for someone who wants absolutely nothing to do with psych and would be perfectly happy just essentially shadowing someone?

Thanks.

And let's save that answer for posterity! IE ME!

You just described my experience at community memorial... shadowing. However, after I left, the attending there apparently went a little bit more off the wall than when I was there. All I did most of the time was round in the morning (7:45) and shadow throughout the hospital. I think people at the VA enjoyed psych more, and Roger's they worked maybe 30min a day (ok, maybe 9am-2pm.)

There are definitely more LDS folks than Jews in our class. Last count, 19 or so Mormons, 6-7 Jews.

I'm back in Milwaukee. Yee-haw.

Hello all you incredibly wise M4s. When's a good time to take CS, and it is better to take it with CK, like the same month? I've heard so much opinion on this, it's driving me nuts.

Also, M3s and M4s who've had medicine. I've recently received my request form thingy, and I'm not sure how to rank it. I've heard if you have inpt medicine as an M4, you have to take overnight call even if it's not your sub-i, is that true? And, is it possible to study for the shelf if both inpt months are during M3 year? I'm kinda wanting a break at some point this year, in addition to pedscation, but I also thought an easier M4 year would be nice.

Thanks all so much. I guess it won't be pertinent though, if I can't survive surgery. Asherses don't like CABGs. ugh!

Well, geriatrics is nice cuz that counts as either inpatient or outpatient, so it's your choice.

I requested outpatient/inpatient and was lucky enough to get it. I wanted to have more inpatient options for medicine instead of 2 general wards months in 3rd plus sub-I. This way I can do a MICU month for my other inpatient month.

But on the flip side, outpatient during 4th year definitely makes 4th year easier. The only reason I was busy during my outpatient month was because I had just moved into my apartment. Otherwise I would've had a crap load of time to study.

How do we know if we have neuro or psych first? Do they email us? Or is OASIS accurate for that?

You find out sometime before you start...I don't think Oasis differentiates. The people who did their psych rotation at Children's/CAIS had a really easy rotation, too. Often home by 1:00 on the CAIS portion of the rotation, and mostly shadowing on the Children's half.

Psych will email you the syllabus a few weeks beforehand. Oasis definitely does not differentiate.

I don't know if I could do geriatrics, especially after the senior mentor program. I didn't like shadowing in geriatrics for a day.

Thanks for the info!

First of all, I'm not sure I would use the phrase "good time" in the same sentence with CS, but personally I would recommend taking it pretty early. I took mine in June of my M3 year (though I sorta had to weasel a day out of CPR without that anal course coordinator's knowledge) and I was really glad I did. IMHO, you remember all that OSCEish stuff better as an M3 before your brain starts rotting away as an M4.

I suppose it also depends on when you plan on doing CK. I took it in Nov because I wasn't one of those people trying to ace it and have it on my application. I definitely wouldn't wait that long to do CS.

I guess the best answer is this: take CS whenever you have a free day with about 4-5 hours to study preceding it. I don't think it necessarily has anything to do with when you do CK. Feel free to disagree others?

Regarding medicine, (assuming you don't want to go into IM) I would definitely recommend doing 2 inpatient months as an M3. I'm not sure the non-subI's have to take call, that might depend on the site, but they definitely work you harder as an M4. Even better is if you can get the geriatrics month, which is like an outpatient month but counts as an inpatient month.

I don't remember if they give you the option, but if you can I would recommend doing one of your M3 months at Froedtert, because if you don't you will end up getting your subI there. Unless you are lucky like me and get the family medicine one (or peds, if you like peds). Between the 2 M3 months and the subI, they try to give you a month at Froedtert, one at the VA, and one at Lukes or Joes.

They don't give that option as an M3... lucky me, I was at the VA for both my third year inpatient and fourth year (geriatrics). Froedtert for me in March! Joyous occasion. At least we get match day off. Sort of. Anyway.

I took CS in September, because I was on ER and it was flexible. I took CK then too... unlike Matt, I wanted it on my application, since I did slightly below average on step I. Did exactly one point better on step II. I'm consistent, if nothing else.

Also: just certified my ROL. Is it March 20th yet? No? Damn. Small parts of me wish I was in Don's spot right now, only one more week. 🙁

Question:

"Students may not do more than two elective months in the same specialty unless specifically recommended, in writing, by the
student’s advisor. That request must be forwarded and then approved by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs. No more than
two electives may be done in Research."

Does this include only electives and away rotations? Like could I do an integrated selective, a sub-I, and an away in ortho and still be under the limit?

Since I am a planner personality (I need to work on te doing part) do any of the M4s have general lottery advice - like strategies, not which class to pick?

I'm a planner too, April. I believe it is limited to two months total. It just depends if the integrated selective counts as a real ortho month. Also, I'm not sure how it applies to aways, since I didn't do any.

My general strategy was figuring out which things were the most important to me, and which things I would just let go. I cared about my OB month, my surgical sub-I, and that was pretty much it. So those were first, then my geriatrics and other inpatient stuff, then medical sub-Is, then my electives. I got almost exactly the schedule I wanted, with just two months switched (I wanted my Feb rotation in Mar and vice versa). I was a happy lady. But I didn't want a lot of really popular stuff. So it kind of depends on the things you want, you know?

Yeah, it's 2 months total including aways. The only exception I found was that you can do 2 months your M4 year even if you already did 1 month of something in your M3 elective.

Hey, don't complain; I still have 5 more interviews left, the last of which is not until Feb 8.

Ouch. How many are you doing? I ended up canceling my last three, two because of burn out and one because of good old cash.

15. And I wish I could cancel some because I was burned out weeks ago.

I did 15 too. That's what the cool kids do, don't you know?

I'm sitting in the library computer lab, and it sounds like the actor from American History X is on the other side of the table.

What's a good reason to try to get out of going to GB for peds? I also have to opt out of the new peds ER option "Pod 2."

Then today I had to give an update on my patient from professor rounds last week because Dr. Cohen forgot to grade me. On Monday, he told me to say how the patient was doing, so I went through and made a presentation about her new renal failure. Then today he asks me, if her recurrent laryngeal is injured and to talk about the success of the operation, not the post-op issues, after I spent so much time earlier today trying to figure out how to do a presentation with all the post-op complications.

they won't send somebody to GB unless they want to go. there's always one in the bunch that would like to. why do you want out of Pod 2?

Anyone happening to be watching Oprah right now? The Ob/gyn doc on is wacko. She's recommendation juice detox diets, advocating against Gardisil, and having the women energize their "low heart."

No... I wish I were though!

what's a low heart? and my wife probably recorded the episode. Dr. Oz usually sounds like he's right on the money, so it's weird that she'd have a wacko doc come on.

I had no idea Hobbits were that hip.

Here's how I thought of Hobbits until the movies came out. I couldn't stand these cartoons.

Apache reminds me of M1 year, and some other weird video Splat sent with like Scandinavian singers.

This video also reminds me of M1 year.
