Dude, I'm pretty sure the VA ceases to exist on federal holidays. It's like it just slips into an alternate dimension for the day or something.

I'm pretty sure there was some federal holiday during the week when I was there too, actually, and it was weird. The place just felt empty.

Is anybody interested in a group order for some Smokey the Bear apparel? I'm thinking of getting a pin for my white coat, and 6.95 for shipping a freaking pin is a tad nuts.

they had fire way back then?

Of course not. Smokey protected us from fire, so we didn't have it. Smokey vanished from my life way more than 24 years ago, though.

You really have a problem with all that flair on your white coat. You look like some kind of 17 year-old whorish Chili's waitress or something.

...Or maybe something to nibble on? Some Pizza Shooters, Shrimp Poppers, or Extreme Fajitas?

being on call and starving, with the cafeteria closed, I hate you for saying that.

Just did an h&p on one of the coolest patients I've had on this rotation- which sucks cause she won't deliver until I'm post call 🙁

I just saw Dr. Miller from St. Joe's on Discovery Health CME talking about pelvic organ prolapse. It brought back bad memories of being in his surgeries and not having a clue what he was doing or why it was taking so long.

And a cool music video featuring Hawai'i.

horrible...

MADISON, Wis. -- A University of Wisconsin Med Flight helicopter crashed on a journey from La Crosse on Saturday night. Three crew people were killed.
The helicopter disappeared on Saturday night and authorities launched a search. The crash site was found on Sunday morning.
A UW spokesman said that three people onboard the helicopter died in the crash. They were identified as Dr. Darren Bean, a physician, Mark Coyne, a registered nurse, and Steve Lipperer, the pilot. The three victims were all from Madison, WISC-TV reported.
Authorities said that the helicopter crashed in the La Crosse area. Allan Tiedt, of the La Crosse County Emergency Dispatch Center, said that the crash site was in the Town of Onalaska. The La Crosse Sheriff's Department, along with Onalaska and Shelby fire departments, have found a portion of the helicopter's fuselage. The La Crosse Police Department said the location of the crash is near Kiel Coulee Road, which is on the bluff about five miles northeast of downtown La Crosse, according to WKBT-TV.
UW officials said that the crash site was discovered at about 8:40 a.m., located about four miles from the airport.
Officials said that they no details on what might have happened, but they speculated during a morning news conference that the craft might have flown into trees.
Authorities had set up a command post in the Town of Medary, WKBT-TV reported.
UW officials said that they would be cooperating with the Federal Aviation Administration investigation.
The helicopter disappeared at about 10:30 p.m. afte taking off from La Crosse. It was sent to La Crosse to return a patient back to that community. UW Hospital spokeswoman Lisa Burnette said that the helicopter took off after dropping off a patient at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center following a flight from Madison.
Officials said that they lost contact with the helicopter shortly after takeoff.
A spokesman for Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse said that their helicopter helped search for the missing one.
UW Hospital spokesman Aaron Conklin said there is one other Med Flight helicopter that serves university hospital system and it has been grounded.
Officials began the Med Flight program in April 1995. They said that the average trip for a patient pickup is about 55 miles, WISC-TV reported.
The UW's two helicopters were put into service last August and October.
The families of the victims have been notified.
Donna Katen-Bahensky, UW Hospital CEO, offered prayers to the victims' families.
"This is a tremendous loss," she said.

on the news tonight they said it's the first ever crash for UW. Sad.

they also then went on to talk about how medical flights are most dangerous after military. if as many commercial flights went down as medical flights, 90 commercial planes would crash each year. Sucky.

another reason why Flight for Life's expansion worries me. Expansion = competition which breeds unsafe decisions. They're adding a helicopter up in Fond du Lac, which is going to create some overlap with ThedaStar out of Appleton.

So what's the deal with this Benchmark OSCE? Is there something I should be doing to prepare for it? I've been totally ignoring it, but I really wouldn't want to have to remediate it next year. I hope I'm not at a disadvantage on it because I've only had a couple weeks of Medicine so far.

Don't know much about the B-OSCE. I'm assuming its like the Medicine OSCE which is supposed to be like step 2 CS. I hate that we have to take a $1000 exam when our school gives us the exact same thing.

BTW, if you know anyone who has not yet registered for step 2 CS, pass it on to them that they probably should get on it. I just registered today, and ONLY december is left for Chicago. Which means there was a lot of action since Gimlet scheduled his, since November and some of October was available then. I took Tuesday, Dec 2, at 3pm. Wasn't really sure what day of the week I should have gone for.

Ick. I'm really glad I ...(disappeared)... for a day of CPR, to take Step 2 BS in June when everything was still fresh in my mind and I hadn't yet turned into an M4 slacker.

Any hints for the BOSCE? I'm just glad it's a call day for me. I also have the stupid fake boards on a call day, so that means less time on call.

Um, I thought there was a PDA file floating around that had all the major points they always hit. Maybe that was just for the peds osce. Either way, I don't have them anymore.

The diagnoses will be fairly common problems, so I wouldn't stress too much. Still not as common as step 2 CS though. I got appendicitis, pneumonia, stroke, etc. Cocaine was probably the weirdest. On CS that is. I really don't remember the b-osce.

Yeah, I've got the PDA thingy.

Just wasn't sure if there was anythign else big to know. I hate OSCEs and they usually bring my grades down.

These are pass-fail... if you've passed all your other OSCEs, you're golden.

Yeah, I really wouldn't worry about it. I don't think anyone really fails (with one possible exception I can think of). As long as you are in the top 99% of your class you will be just fine.

LOL. I think the notable exception got kicked out of school altogether, did you hear?

Uh, no I did not. We're talking about the same person, right? Is the B-OSCE why he had to repeat the M3 year or was it something else? Or both. It's probably for the best though.

He failed medicine 3 times that I know of... I think that may have been a major hink in the whole "graduating" thing.

I heard his intern also sent the other student on his team (one of my friends) the 3rd time to follow him to catch him in a lie. He said he didn't go smoke, but the intern didn't believe him when he said he was doing work, so the student was able to document that he went out of the hospital to smoke (on the smoke free MCW campus).

that is correct.

and i'm unaware of this pda thing, so ashers, please share. one hindrance is that my pda is incapable of beaming anymore.

I think I got it from Funk in like August, so I totally forgot I had it until right before the end of peds. If you see me, I'll definitely give it to you. I'll be at school for the fake boards on Thursday afternoon, and my bosce is at 7am on monday.

That can't be good. I'm hoping the first time is the charm...

Word. Failing 3 times makes me think that there are personal issues afoot. Shirley he or she is smart enough. don't call me shirley.

UPdate on teh turbo porsche jealosy: It is an M1's 2nd car. WTeff?

You know who. The only possibility.

Don, you crack me up. Really? I see how you are... 😛

Seriously though, the only thing that makes all the debt bearable is obviously the assurance that I really shouldn't have any trouble paying it off in a reasonable amount of time once I finally get through with the training. Can you imaging 4 years of loans and no degree to show for it? It makes me a lot more sympathetic for the people who have to decide who not to admit to medical school.

That's like an additional mortgage with nothing to show for it. Whoever this person is will probably not be able to have much luck in the job market.
