Official MCW Class of 2009 Thread

Okay, Creepy Pre-med Guy doesn't bother me, but Even Older EMT Student Guy is really driving me nuts. He sounds like he's trying to snort a line of sand or something, and then hacking it back up. I know you guys think that CPG gives us disdainful looks for talking, but EOESG is even worse.

I'm not sure who EMT student guy is... and are you sure he's trying to snort sand?

I'm wondering if they've thrown out any neuro questions, and this is crazy. I'm in the middle of a grade range and nothing in the universe is gonna make me high-pass or honor this mofo. Do you think I'm turning into a gunner wannabe? You know, all the anxiety without the achievement? This is daft.

or large pieces of popcorn.

I'm with you, samenewme. I'm right in the middle of the pass range as well.

Meanwhile, I would like to excel in phys, but the 69% on Mattson's 2004 questions isn't too reassuring. Seriously, he asks the hardest ****ing questions. At least I did pretty well on Forster's stuff.

It's the matching that kills me. I made a nice little drawing of the nephron and what goes in and out where and what influences it. But I actually have to LEARN the drawing. Oops.

Seriously, a professor who gives 16 options, and the correct one is "None of the above" should not be an instructor.

"None of the above" is the worst. I mean, you really gotta know your **** if that's one of the choices.

In other breaking news, my dog is getting a consult from a UW-Madison orthopedic surgeon veterinarian to assess the laxity in her lateral collateral ligaments (or the doggy equivalent, whatever that may be).

This is gonna suck when he tells us she needs a $3000 operation. Ashers, maybe you can scrub in.

sorry to hear it, buddy...hope it all works out OK!

Hey, I wanna scrub in too!! I 😍 ortho.

And that sucks. Sorry chili. Good luck!

Yikes! My wife works with an orthopedic specialist on surgeries like that every week. She tells me all the time how good he is (although he has the stereotypical surgeon mentality) so you could always check his price for the surgery if Madison wants to charge you up the wazoo.

Does your dog play a lot of indoor soccer?

Where does she work? Our vet said there were only a few vets in the state that do that type of orthopedic work...one in Waukesha and one out here somewhere, and then the guys at the vet school in Madison. He recommended the guys in Madison because that's who he trained with.

She works at Crawford Animal Hospital south of school on Hwy 100 (right across from Wal-Mart). If your dog ends up needing the surgery let me know what it's called and I can ask her if he performs it and how much it typically runs.

Not trying to steal business from Madison or anything, but I know he's a good surgeon and it might end up cheaper and more convenient for ya.

So what happens to your dog that it needs surgery? Are the LCLs the only ligaments that are loose? Poor thing. =(

She walks with her right rear leg bowed out, and her knee pops a lot when she moves her legs. The vet said the distal end of her femur is sliding around in the meniscus on her tibia. It doesn't seem to bother her now, aside from hopping weird on her "good" leg sometimes when we take a walk, but we're worried that it will become a degenerative condition where she won't be able to use her hind legs in a few years. The vet yesterday said that there was too much side-to-side laxity in her knee joint, especially medially, which would be a result of the the LCL being loose. I could tell he was doing an "anterior drawer" test to see what the doggy ACL (it's called something else in dogs) was like, and he said it seemed to be fine.

He didn't get any x-rays or anything yesterday because he figured the next guy would want to take some anyway so we might as well save our money.

Thanks...I will definitely do that! Of course, I'm sure this will all be going down right as I'm trying to study for boards. Hopefully any surgery will be able to be postponed until mid-June so I can concentrate. Even better, maybe there's a little doggy knee brace she can wear or something. That would be sweet.

Xandie, is a hippopatamus a hippopatamus or just a really cool popatamus?

I actually didn't go to the Chancery tonight for a change. I'm just feeling too lazy to go out tonight. I've got plans for tomorray anyways.

can i join gthe fun in here too?? you guys rock!!!!

and why do u guys use your real names? aren't you afraid you'll get in trouble or people will now who u are?

I guess I'm not uber-worried that internet stalkers will troll around the MCW Class threads just to find out what my non-superhero identity is.

I'm quite dissappointed in your class. I was at Mo's last night, and when we all left at ~12, I decided to swing by the Chancery to see how the M1 crowd was doing. Well, when I got there, there was only ~15 people there, and about 1/2 were M2s, and another 1/4 was not in med school. Apparently there had been a few more M1s, but they had gone home already.

So you didn't miss much at the Chancery last night.

no. should i be? i don't say anything i wouldn't in "real life."

Fourth year schedules come out in less than three hours... I hope mine is full. 🙁

If it's not full does that mean you didn't get some rotations that you wanted?

That, and you might get hosed, and not even get the graduation requirements like sub-i's and integraged selectives.

I guess xandie is just going to ignore my question. typical

Xandie, is a hippopatamus a hippopatamus or just a really cool popatamus?

I think that depends on the general quality of patami in the area in question.

And I got a full schedule, with everything I wanted... Don, my surg sub-I is pediatric urology in August. Med sub-I in March. How about you?

And I got a full schedule, with everything I wanted... Don, my surg sub-I is pediatric urology in August. Med sub-I in March. How about you?

Here's my year:
July: Urology Sub-I
Aug: Medical ICU
Sept: ER
Oct: Medicine Sub-I
Nov: GI & Hepatology
Dec: Vacation
Jan: Anesthesiology
Feb: Trauma Surgery
Mar: Physician/Patient Perspective (Integrated Selective)
Apr: Vacation
May: Preparing for Internship/Class Reunion

I built a little flexibility into my schedule by being able to drop either GI/Hepatology or Anesthesiology for a vacation month. I did this because if I do Urology, I'll have to interview in November/December. On the other hand, if I do ER, I'll have to interview in December/January. Made sense at the time I guess.
I'm also at Froedtert for pretty much the entire year with this little gem of a schedule. No away electives for me.

Mine:

July: Women's Health
August: Pediatric Urology Sub-I
September: ER (at Columbia)
October: Geriatrics
November: Vacation
December: Research elective
January: Vacation
February: Blood Bank
March: Med Sub-I
April: Vacation
May: PFI

I'm all over the place, Children's, Froedtert, VA, Columbia... no two months in the same place (except Froedtert for Women's Health and Sub-I). I am so very happy... look at that schedule. Only two months of call. 🙂

Why would you interview in different months for those specialties? Something about they way they run interviews, or is it because of how your schedule is set up?

What do you do on "blood bank?" What's PFI? What are you doing your research in? Am I annoying you with all these questions?

So I take it everyone has to do one surgical Sub-I and one Medical Sub-I

The hippopotamus thing was a Mitch Hedberg joke, by the way.

Blood bank: 1) Understand principles of transfusion medicine. 2) Improve students knowledge concerning appropriate use of blood products and their adverse effects. 3) Understand laboratory and therapeutic approach to patients with hemostatic disorders requiring blood product replacement.
AKA... a whole lot of nothing.

PFI: Preparing for internship. 1) The primary learning activity is a combination of large class, case-based presentations and small group, problem-based learning. 2) Students are assigned to small groups that include students with diverse career plans. Each student is previously assigned several topics about which they are to become the "local content expert". The conduct of each session will be as follows: a) Brief unknown cases (with relevant questions) are distributed at the beginning of the session, and a faculty member reads each case to the entire class. b) A 10-15 minute small group discussion is guided by the written cased-based questions. Each group has one student "content expert" to serve as a resource in the pursuit of the answers to the questions. 3) As the large class reconvenes, the faculty member facilitates, corrects, modifies, and leads the discussion (calling on individual students) toward the resolution of the dilemmas posed in the questions. 4) Many instructional sessions may include interactive lecture or demonstration sessions. 5) CPR re-certification will be offered. 6) The course includes discussions of adult & pediatric medicine, surgical, ob/gyn & psychiatric issues.
AKA, hanging out with other students and being a lame-ass.

My research is ovarian cancer risk and obesity. Good times.

And yes, you have to do one surgical sub-I and one medical (family, medicine, or peds) sub-I.

Am I annoying you with all my cut and paste?

Oops, didn't realize he died. Oh well.

Andy, there's a whole thing on the internet about 4th year scheduling. We have more requirements than I realized before. The 2 sub-I's I knew about and the internal med requirement, but didn't know about the integrative thing before. Basically, it seems to me that 4th year scheduling and the lottery can get pretty complicated. Right, Xandie and Don?

I still haven't figured out what I'm gonna do in June. I want to do my sub-I, but I still can't decide between anesthesia and ortho. And I heard that if you apply for ortho, the sub-I is considered your interview for the MCW program. So if I go that route, I had better do the ortho sub-I. I think my board score is going to play a large part in this decision. I don't have research, so I think I'll need to score really high to consider ortho. Anesthesia I'm sure still needs to be high, but not quite as high. And if I bomb it ... pathology, here I come.

Here's the link Andy. I read all the stuff at the bottom of the page about the scheduling process and requirements and stuff.
