Official MCW Class of 2009 Thread

I'm going out East that weekend too... the issue with finding a night is that I'm on cardiothoracic surgery and Don's on OB/GYN. So he and I will figure out a night that we're both not on call, and run with it from there... Don, you guys will figure out your call schedule on your first day of OB. My recommendation, amongst other things, is to do a Friday-Sunday call for the weekends... you get more full weekends off that way. Anyway, let me know when you're not on, and I'll make sure to arrange my call schedule accordingly.

47 days left of third year!

Sure thing.

Agreed. Try not to get anything worse than a B-, but I've never heard of anything over a 3.0 causing a problem.

Thanks.
I couldn't get myself to study, but i still managed something above a 3.0 with B being the lowest grade.

whoa, is that so you can get into plastic dermatology?

No, I'd be aiming higher if I wanted derm. If I decide to go the ortho route, a lot of programs have a 230 cut-off when looking at apps.

I have tomorrow off!! Hoorah!

the average is about a 230 for ortho residencies though, you must be interested in some top shelf residencies.

Aiming for above average seems reasonable to me...

I were just axin'.....

So do you realize you'll be Dr. Xandie and Dr. Donnyfire in just over a year? I realized in three years, I'll actually be Dr. Prowler. That's a little skeery for me.

Yeah, I can't remember which programs they are, but I hear that number frequently.

I'm not really that gung-ho about a top residency, but it'd be nice to have a bit of choice in geographic location.

Hey, you're back, cool! You never did tell us the details about your design project, you know. I'm really curious; I love that stuff!

o my gosh i'm sorry!! i totaly missed that with my exams and stuff and then i started partying hard cause i'm free!! for a few months...lol! cause i'm not studying the brachail plexus before school!!

well we actually were in a computer design class sorta, so we used tectonic studio for a lot of the colors and fabrics...so cool! we also played with cheif architect a bit but its REALLY REALLY REALLY HARD so they set most of it up and we just changed colors and styles and stuff. its pretty hard to use if your not a professional so we just used it for the basics. but everything we did was on there! i sometimes would sneak a peak over here when i was working cause i'm lazy like that!!!! 😀

So are there standardized fabric samples in it or what? You mean they don't make you assemble a swatch board with real fabric samples? Tsk, kids these days!

Yeah, it's pretty cool. Except we won't be able to hide behind our short white coats anymore, and will actually have to take responsibility for our decisions. It's been said that one of the scariest things in medicine is an intern with a prescription pad.

Plus, since I'll probably be doing a surgical internship (Urology includes at least one year of General Surgery), I'm sure I'll get over the cool factor pretty quick. Then it'll be the overworked/under-slept factor.

One year and two days, if we're counting. And I'm with Don on the overworked/underslept factor... OB/GYN intern, anyone?

That's my match day... isn't your match in 8 months and 11 days?

(Clearly we're both very busy today... how was your neuro exam?)

True (unless I do ER, which for some reason I refuse to rule out).

The neuro exam was pretty easy.

I'm soooooooo not getting anything done today, even though my psych shelf is tomorrow.

Stupid internets.

PS - The psych shelf sucks... although it'll probably be easier for you, having already done medicine. Are you excited about starting OB/GYN?

My B-OSCE is tomorrow... boo.

is that the San Francisco match or something?

No, Urology is special. They run through ERAS, but match on their own in January.

San Francisco Match is an early match, but represents Opthomology, Neurosurgery, Neurotology (not a spelling error), some Plastic Surgery residencies, and Child Neurology.

B-OSCE = lame

But you'll be done with that little formality, and they aren't charging us for it like they do for CS 😡 .

Yay! Yours is Thursday, right?

I *need* to go to bed... but no, presentation on nephrogenic systemic fibrosis must happen first. *sigh*

it was a real basic class. the harder classes are for the people that wanna do it as a career like my mom, and thats where they teach you the real business stuff like swatches and things. this was like an intro class where you pretty much just learn how to make things look nice! its a lot more fun for me that way, i hate doing swatches and presentations and stuff!!! 😛

Hmmm, so they have neurotology and opthomology. Is that like ophthalmology? :meanie:

Presentation 1 for surgery down. Two more to go.

B-OSCE in t minus two hours. God, I love crossing things off the list.

The unfortunate part is that they just keep adding things to the list. Just ask my USMLE study schedule. :scared:

I don't like studying for boards -- especially when the weather is nice. 🙁

It's not nice out. Too muggy. I'd much rather have the 60 degree crisp weather than this mid-80s sweatfest. So there.

Ok, who here is from HI and went to school in AZ? That would be me. It's not too humid/hot until it's like 95 and humid. Then I'd prefer 105 and dry.

>46K points on bejeweled! I'll be taking my pda over to my friend's tonight so I can't play with it anymore. (Not that I've played with it much though since Sunday).

No worries...I hear that Step 1 is heavy on bejeweled.

Btw, boards studying makes me want to do things like this.

It ain't humid until it's raining, baby.

Or over 90. That is too hot for me. Or over 85 at night when I'm trying to sleep.

If it could be 87 and sunny all the time, I would be one happy camper. 😀

And if it's not humid til it's raining, well then the humidity was coming down pretty substantially while I walked to C lot from school an hour ago. My clothes are still wet.

The hottest/most humid weather I've ever been in was New Orleans in late July. Sweating was automatic and my hair was a frizzball.

B-OSCE? Check. CCSSA - pending, since I did one section and was actually falling asleep at the computer lab. Home for a nap, then I'll finish that bad boy up and weep at the score... oh well, napping sounds nice.

What are all these weird tests you've been taking? How about a definition for the "B" in B-OSCE, and a little hint on CCSSA would be great, too. Right now my best guesses are Canadian Collie & Shetland Sheepdog Association, or Customs Clearing Services of South Africa.

B stands for Benchmark OSCE, which is a graduation requirement. At this point, it's really a formality. It's pass/fail, and I've heard it's pretty easy. Am I correct Xandie?

CCSSA stands for Comprehensive Clinical Science Self-Assessment, which is a Step II practice test from the fun folks at NBME. I opted out of that one.

My last year in Louisiana it was like that from May into September. You open the door and some sort of evil demon just sucks the air right out of your lungs. I don't miss it.

It was fine, although you never really know how they're going to grade.

I did one section of the CCSSA, was falling asleep at the computer, called back to Columbia, found out there was an ex lap, started to drive back, talked to the other JMS who was also driving back for the ex lap, turned around, came to Patrick's house for tasty mushroom and spinach pizza. Tasty! And some well-earned TV quality time... love it.
