Official MCW Class of 2009 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I had the most random compliment ever today, a patient told me I'm "gifted" at doing paps.

Another patient told me I was "super" with her bouncy child. I liked that one more than the gifted at paps.

I'm kinda sad to be done with family, now I have to start waking up early again. Blarg.
What rotation are you starting?

And congratulations on the cervix scraping.

Nope.

Edit: Maybe if you have ambulatory. But I managed to avoid them pretty easily.

Too late. They've already taken our souls and sometimes, will to live.

Edit: Btw. I have no idea what I need to know for this freakin Family Med test.

Good luck on tests tomorrow!

Luckily for me, I know exactly what I need to know for the medicine shelf tomorrow.

Unluckily for me, that information constitutes about 86% of all known medical knowledge. Good luck, indeed.

yeah, this will suck. how come in real life we just call consults for everything, but in med school exam land we have to know it all for ourselves? that's crap.

Because you just never know when you might be flying on a plane over the Atlantic when the beautiful young lady three rows ahead of you in the nice cardigan will suddenly go into ACUTE THROMBOTIC THROMBOCYTOPENIC PURPURA!!!!!! Then whatcha gonna do, hotshot? Consult the pilot?!

Hellz no! You're gonna put on the daddy pants, grab some glucocorticoids, a plasmapheresis machine, and gobs of FFP from your handy doctor's traveling bag that you checked in preflight and cure that lil' mama.

That is, if the undercover US marshall on the plane doesn't tackle your ass and drag you down to Guantanamo for getting out of your seat without permission, you terrorist punk.

Damn, I need sleep.

I thought that was the class average for our micro lecture exam, if you're talking about the e-mail Beth forwarded us.

I don't even really know how to read

...and who the hell is beth?

edit: wait, I know beth. Well, I don't KNOW her but I know of her.

So i've been watching Halloween cartoons all night, mostly stuff my dad taped off TV in the early 80s. At the end of Garfield Halloween, there was a thing for Saturday morning cartoons. It listed "Berenstein Bears and Hulk Hogan, with Teen Wolf and Pee Wee in between!"

i'm watching Transformers....i should probably be ironing.

I downloaded that a week ago or so. I might watch it tonight. Let me know how it is.

not what i expected. goofier. a little more comedic. very cheesy. but suspend all belief. you'll enjoy the military representation in the film. it's almost a 2 hour commercial for the USAF.

overall worth a watch. a lot of people whined about the main character, but I actually thought he was pretty funny.

and Starscream? he's badass. Great dogfight.

Funk....this is just for you.

i'm going to go drink vodka now.

Yeah, I was fairly impressed. Kinda makes my life seem awfully boring after watching heat-seeking missiles streaking past high rise buildings....

I'm definitely gonna need an automatic weapon at some point in my life...

best text for surgery?

Surgical Recall, and the "underground" study guide (answers to the learning objective questions).

I also liked selected chapters in the Lawrence book (recommended text), but it's not at all essential.

I love ortho.

So today, my residents sent me home at like 3, but before I left, I was like "oh, so what time are we rounding tomorrow, and do I pre-round on the patients on the cases I was in today?"

The residents were like, "No, unlike other services where you basically just learn stuff on rounds, you learn stuff in other parts of ortho, so we'll round as a team, at the same time, and you should come in wearing scrubs, it's not required to wear anything else, even for clinic, except on Wednesdays when you should probably dress up a bit for conferences."

I'm so happy right now. 😀

I disagree about the underground study guide. I heard that thing was like everything straight from the test and I studied it almost exclusively, then the test was pretty different. I did like the textbook. And Recall is good for pimp questions but a little weird to do actual studying for the exam.

Ashleigh, you're making me excited for the sub-I in June!

I had a completely wasted day today. Ped orientation 7:30-1:15 today and nothing else. ~80% of that orientation could have been eliminated. But after working 14 hour days consistently on surgery, I could use the break.

For surgery, I kept surgery recall in my white coat - good for reading while waiting in the PACU or something. Good for pimping questions.

I got an old edition of the Lawrence text on eBay for $4. You can borrow it if you'd like. I read it when I could.

I thought the objectives packet (the underground packet) was pretty good, but since I'm a procrastinator and always behind, I didn't get through as much as I'd like.

There's also a cd with pre-test on if you want - I never got around to using it.

I can email you the fact sheet too. Essentially every point on there was on the test. Too bad there's only like 30 points on there (the test was 115 questions).

Any more brain busters?

I love ortho.

I actually really dug vascular surgery today. Didn't have the chance to scrub in yet, but rounds were awesome (and efficient!) and I think I could dig the workflow of a surgery day. Best thing is my team and hours this month are shaping up to be awesome. Should be able to learn a lot.

Why do I get the feeling I might be one of those cursed students that likes every rotation?

as long as you're not one of those losers that tells everyone on each rotation how much you like it and that you want to go into that field.....not that I KNOW anyone like that......

I didn't do vascular, but thought it was pretty much the coolest thing since sliced bread when I did see it. I liked CT too, though, and we all know that I'm going into a crazy life field.

On that note, I'm sitting in my hotel in Allentown, PA, getting ready for my first interview tomorrow. Had the social at Red Robin earlier, and everyone is pretty cool. We were having a good time. The only issue is that this is the rest of my week:
Friday: Interview in Allentown, Social in Baltimore
Saturday: Interview in Baltimore
Sunday: Social in York
Monday: Interview in York
Tuesday: Social in Chester, PA
Wednesday: Interview in Chester
Thursday: Social in Baltimore (different program)
Friday: Interview in Baltimore

So.. yeah. Luckily for me, I talk so much that my smiling muscles are in really good shape.

The only issue is that this is the rest of my week:

Holy crap! Look at our superstar racking up those East Coast interviews. Good luck!

Honey, I have 22 interviews scheduled. I'm a crazy person. I need to cancel some.

Someone save me from myself. Seriously. And I *need* to go to bed, but I'm all wired. OY!

If you want I can call you and read you a bedtime story straight out of Lawrence, Chapter 22: Disease of the Vascular System. 😉

i can follow that up with a riveting discussion of end-to-end vs. side-to-side colon anastomoses! i'm totally pumped to hopefully see a colectomy tomorrow.
