first off, istwan is a solid guy and, in my experience as head of applicant host, a pretty straight-shooter. he'll likley give you advice that's good for you (as opposed to being good for MCW). Still, though, remember that you need to critically evaluate his position since he has a job to do and ultimately he doesn't answer to you (this is good to do any time you get advice from anyone with whom you don't have a personal connection).

That said, think long and hard before applying ED. Keep in mind that if you get accepted it's basically a binding contract. And, if you don't get in ED, you're behind the field everywhere else you apply. There a lot of schools and, while I love MCW, it may not be the best fit for you. The only way you really know is to apply to and visit several schools. This is a more expensive and arduous process, but in the end may benefit you more than saving money and ending up where you're not going to be happy and thus not optimizing your chances of being successful (I'm not suggesting that this is necessarily the case, but it's something to think about). Anecdotally, I was set to apply ED to a non-MCW school, and now am VERY HAPPY that I received advice not to do so (based solely on "exploring what's out there"--thanks Dad!). Just something to toss around in your head. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do. T

Hawkeye and agent splat,

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate your input. Istwan e-mailed me promptly and gave me the answer that I had expected. He thought that I would be competitive, but he recommended applying in the general pool based on my comments about only applying EDP if I was in the very competitive category. I dread the cost of applying to so many schools, but I agree that it probably would be the way to go. I'm about 99% sure that I'll end up at MCW if I get accepted, but like you said, I have no idea how much I'll like the other schools unless I apply and visit and interview. My money is on MCW though, I love Milwaukee and thus far, I'd consider nearly every person that I've met through research and SPUR to be good people. Thanks again for the help, hopefully I'll see you guys next year!

Hello!

I'll be starting at MCW in August and hoping to move into an apartment 8/1 and I really would like a roommate. I'm organized and clean. The reason I want a really want a roommate is because I would like to get a 2 bedroom at The Reserve or Normandy Village or Underwood Station. From what I see online, the rent is too high for a 1 -bedroom and financial aid isn't enough to cover, but a 2 bedroom would be afforadable. They seem like nice places to live and I think I would trust moving into the Reserve without seeing it prior to moving.

I'm from Seattle and it's going to cost to much to fly out before school starts and I wont' be able look around for apts.

If anyone is interested, please PM me...I can tell you more about me too or email you my roommate questionaire. Thanks!!

Should I go ahead and send out the contact list now? I think we've gotten about as many folks as we'll get by now.

Ah yeah, better go for it now, its already late enough.

Contact list has been sent to everyone that gave me their information. If you don't get it for some reason, let me know. It was a mass email, so first step if you don't see it would be to check your junk email folder just in case. It's coming from a gmail address.

If any of you still have not received your insurance information, give the school a call. It was supposed to be included in the second mailing but apparently didn't make it into all the packets. I just picked mine up today.

6 weeks to go!

I'm trying to figure out what photo of me and what quote I want to use for the "freshman factbook."

I guess I count myself lucky that this is the most pressing issue I'm currently faced with.

So, any ideas on what or where we should all get together for? A day in the park or perhaps a fun restuarant or something?

At about 1am after an evening of heavy drinking?

How many of you are already moved in to Milwaukee?

A park is probably our best option. Depending on how many of us are getting together, a restaurant may be tricky. It would be fun to grill and hang out on the beach by the lake (lake Michigan that is). There are a bunch of volleyball nets up and I have some frisbees and footballs. Otherwise, we could plan a brewer game outing. Also, there are a number of brewery tours available, but that’s more of a winter thing to do so remind me of this idea in February when we’re all in desperate need of free beer samples. When are we planning this for? I live in Milwaukee now, but who else will be here and when?

For anyone that is going to be here June 30th through July 10th you should make plans to attend Summerfest, a huge (in fact “the world’s largest”) outdoor music festival (http://www.summerfest.com/). It’s held on Milwaukee’s Lake Michigan shoreline. I guarantee you will not be disappointed with taking the time to go and you will soon see how much fun this city can be. FYI for those of you new to Milwaukee; come to expect that no matter what we do, it will probably involve drinking beer since this is brew city USA.

Ooh, I like the Brewers game idea! We could tailgate beforehand with some brats and beer. (A properly tailgated Brewer's game does not involve entering Miller Park before the 5th inning. 😀 )

I remember Xandie mentioning something about a Brewers game when she was writing about a few pre-orientation week activities that some M2's were planning, so I don't want to step on her toes, though. What do you guys think?

As of this Saturday I will officially be a Wauwatosa resident! 😎

Beer and baseball? Ok, now I'm getting excited. A game would be great, but a BBQ would be just as good. I'd imagine that most people are planning to be in Tosa by the first of August, so anytime from then until the start of orientation (8th) would probably work best. I'm looking forward to it.

I ditto the week before orientation, since I'll be moving in on August 1st, but honestly any time before that might also work for me, since I'm only 45 minutes away from Milwaukee right now.

You guys are fabulous. Well, we wanted to have a Brewer's game, but they're out of town those weeks, so we scrapped that idea. We're having a BBQ on August 6th from 11-3 I think, then heading over to the State Fair (times are still a little fuzzy, since it's more than a month away). The BBQ is planned at Hart Park, which might be a good place if you guys want to do it also.

I'lll be in Tosa officially August 1st. My last day of work is July 9th..so anytime after that count me in. I would prefer that whatever is chosen includes quality alcoholic beverages. And Splat..heres my quote...."beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy!!" -Benjamin Franklin

While apparently not an option for the first week in August, I do plan to hit up as many Brewer games as I can squeeze in this fall, and they even play in the afternoon on my birthday! 👍

Bring on the BBQ! We're already in Tosa so anytime will work for us.

On another note:

Can anyone recommend a good family practice doctor and a good OB/GYN doc (for my wife) in the Tosa area who takes the school offered Humana insurance? You can always PM me if you don't want to put it on here.

Btw, for those taking the school insurance who were wondering, it will become effective August 1st.

Student health is through Michaela Unrein, a nurse practitioner that works at Internal Medicine West, which isn't actually at Froedtert anyway. The nice thing about that is that you can usually get an appointment the next day. I really like Michaela, and use her as my PCP and she does my annual exam. Otherwise, you can use any of the clinics at Froedtert and it's really close to school!!

Coverage begins on August 8th.

I talked to the insurance broker who handles the MCW account and asked about this. She said that although school doesn't begin until Aug 8th, coverage does start Aug 1st.

Sounds good. The packet said something about becoming active the first day of orientation, but I like your answer more.

Who's up for a beer-drinkin, brat-eating tailgate party, oh and Brewer game?

It seemed like people liked the idea of a Brewer game. The Brewers are in town almost the whole last week of July (see link below). Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday are best for me. For those who will or can be in town that week, post a reply if you’re in.

As for a BBQ we can plan something for after August 1st.

Count me in! Any of those days works for me. I can help coordinate plans once I quit my job on July 15th.

I'll be moving over there towards the end of July. I just signed the lease on my new apartment which is both exciting and sad. It'll be good to do something social after my boyfriend heads back to Seattle 🙁 so I'm definitely up for anything.

I'm trying to use the Humana website to search for a PCP. What's the name of the HMO service? There's no plain Humana HMO. How do you go about finding a physician?

is anyone aware of any computer requirements (hardware or software) that the school insist on.

There aren't any!

When I talked to the insurance agent about this, she said to just pick a doctor in the area because you have to pick someone. You can switch docs whenever you want to after that.

Out of curiosity, anyone else live at the Underwood Station Apartments yet? Or plan to?

Definitely count me in on the Brewers game and the BBQ. I already live in town so just tell me when/where to meet and I'll be there.

Irie man. :horns: From what I remember, it was great. 👍

Btw, coming from Seattle, get ready for some crazy weather out here in Milwaukee.

So I'm finally filling out my insurance paperwork. Do we need to put any group number on the form? We aren't supposed to know that, right? Just want to make sure I don't have any problems getting insured. I can't believe how long I have put this off.

I called the insurance account manager listed in the packet. She said to leave the group number section blank. Good luck! 👍

One more thing... Is anyone living in the downtown area or close to it? PM me if so. 👍

So I completely wasn't expecting it, but I was offered a spot yesterday!!!

I am staying with a friend in Milwaukee Thur-Sat, and was on our way to North Chicago to find myself an apartment, and when we stopped in Kenosha to eat, I got the call. What timing huh!!! So we changed plans, and I'm now looking for a place in Milwaukee. My only prospects right now are Normandy (if they call me back!) and a privately owned place right by school. Any suggestions? I have til ~5pm tomorrow (gotta work in MN on Sunday morning).

Sorry Code brown, I had to rule out Underwood station - can't afford it (the school only gives us $550 a month for rent - WOW, not much, a concern), and I will have a dog. They accepts cats only. Otherwise, I really like it. Oh well.

I've been secretly rooting for you to get off that list. Congratulations!!! I have absolutely no advice on housing, but congrats and good luck finding a place. You have time.

First off, congrats and welcome to MCW! As for a crib, Normandy is nice, but many people have great success with renting from private owners in the Tosa area. You might also try stopping by school and checking out the bulletin boards--there are some great places that only advertise there. Either way you'll be fine. Good luck and congrats again.

I decided to live in a duplex a couple of miles from school. I think it is great but it depends on what you are looking for. I dont have any neighboors, rent is cheaper and my lease is month to month. However, i also do not have a lot of the amenties like heated parking, open grassy areas and a fitness center. I think it is all personal preference.

Congrats and welcome to the class of 09.

Awesome!!! Congratulations!!! As for rent, check out www.craigslist.org

I just purchased new bike with the money I've made this summer and I'm looking online for some paved trails in the Tosa area. Let me know of you want to go for a ride sometime after July 25th. I should me mostly moved in by then.

I'll be in town starting August 1. There's a book out there called "biking and hiking the greater milwaukee area" on the internet if you're desperate for information (costs 16 bucks). Otherwise I'm sure you can find it all on the internet also.

Probably the easiest thing to do is stop in a bike shop and get a map. The Oak Leaf Trail has a decent combination of off-road paved trails, county park roads, and public streets, but I don't know how much is trail in Tosa.

Well guys, I looked at a privately owned place practically right next to the college, but it was $565, nothing included, for a small space. So I went the easy route and picked Normandy. So I should be moving in Aug 1 if everything goes according to plan.

So how do I get that contact list? And get myself on there?

MCJAY - I'm living in Shorewood, very close to UW-Milwaukee (my fiance will be a grad student there). I'll send you a PM.

Hello to all you other MCWers! I'm excited to meet up in a few weeks.

PM me any info you want to include (real name, email, phone, AOL Instant messenger, etc) and I'll add it and email you your own special copy. If anybody else hasn't given me their names and info yet, please PM me and I'll send an addendum out to everybody else that already has the list.

And welcome to Normandy Village. Sorta. I'm not there yet either. I'm going back tomorrow to take some measurements of my apartment. I fear I won't be able to fit both the lion cages AND the life-sized replica of the statue of David.

Hi everybody! First off, congrats to akpete... I was hoping you'd get in!

Secondly, I have an Orientation meeting tonight, and I wondered if there's anything you guys are really interested in/would like to see happen during Orientation week. We've got a ton of stuff planned, both for that week and the week before, but I thought I could bring up any of your concerns this evening. If you have any ideas and don't see this by tonight, feel free to post them anyway and I'll be happy to send them along to the committee by email or at the next meeting.

Only a few weeks left, be sure to enjoy!

Xandie (and yes, that is my real name, so feel free to come find me during Orientation!)
