Official MCW Class of 2009 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi Xandie,

Not sure if this is what you were looking for, but are there any intramural sports available at MCW?

Thanks

Hi everybody! First off, congrats to akpete... I was hoping you'd get in!

Secondly, I have an Orientation meeting tonight, and I wondered if there's anything you guys are really interested in/would like to see happen during Orientation week. We've got a ton of stuff planned, both for that week and the week before, but I thought I could bring up any of your concerns this evening. If you have any ideas and don't see this by tonight, feel free to post them anyway and I'll be happy to send them along to the committee by email or at the next meeting.

Only a few weeks left, be sure to enjoy!

Xandie (and yes, that is my real name, so feel free to come find me during Orientation!)

This really pertains more to immediately before orientation week, but I'm assuming we'll be informed how/where we're supposed to be parking? Or can you explain that now? I'm only familiar with parking for the ED.

Or for that matter, any other non-medical-related clubs? Something to completely forget about medicine? Thanks Xandie!

Intramurals - Yes indeedy! The president of intramural sports is named Mark... I'm not sure if he is going to have a table at the student organizations fair, but I imagine he will. I'm about the last person to talk to about sports, but I can say that there is a group.

Parking - oh parking, love of my life. We part at Lot B (known affectionately to some as blot), which is on Wisconsin and 94th (by all the construction). You need your ID to get in, and then you walk the 0.38 miles (I pedometer-ed it) to the front door. I assume for first week they'll leave the gate up, since you won't get your IDs until the first day or two.

Non-medical related clubs - I'm glad you asked! On Tuesday of Orientation week (did you guys get your schedule yet?) We're having an Orientation fair from 3:30 to 4:30. There will be tables for most of the orgs, which include religious/ethnic clubs, sports clubs, med-related clubs and almost anything you can think of. If there isn't one you like, you can start your own! It's not too complicated, I don't think. The boards of all of the clubs are run by M-2s, and it tends to be the same set of M-2s, so you'll get to know us. (As for me, I'm president of the Jewish Student Union, secretary of Medical Students for Choice, and Tag-A-Long chair for the OB/GYN interest group... that should give anyone all the info they need to know about me!!)

Alright, that's all for now. Clearly my research job is very taxing, which is why I'm on these boards so much now. 🙂

I just purchased new bike with the money I've made this summer and I'm looking online for some paved trails in the Tosa area. Let me know of you want to go for a ride sometime after July 25th. I should me mostly moved in by then.

I don't really know of any paved trails designated solely for bikes. However, the Oak Leaf Trail, which runs mostly on roads, is decent. I have a nice route that runs down to St. Francis, where I pick up the Oak Leaf Trail, then along the lake to Shorewood and back. It's about 30 mi and there are a lot of interesting things to see along the way. I usually ride on Sunday afternoons. Let me know if you want to come along sometime and I'll give you a tour.

We ride down the Oak Leaf Trail from Wauwatosa to Franklin. Here is a link to the Milwaukee County Bike Map. The maps are in PDF format and quite large so I would recommend downloading them before you try opening them (much faster this way). Just right click and save as on the links (although you probably already knew this 😀 )

Be sure to make it over to Madison at some point. It is beautiful!!

Wow, packing sucks so very much. Congrats to those who have finished moving and perhaps unpacked into their new place. I need a good massage once I get there. I'm in the process of ending my health insurance in Seattle and I was wondering when we get our new insurance cards from Humana. The address I put on the form was my one here in Seattle (which luckily will still have my boyfriend living there) but I'm hoping it just doesn't get mailed. Too bad I don't have room for my bike, the Oak Leaf Trail sounds nice.

I can't remember if you mail them or if you pick them up... I think it might be mailed. Lord knows they send enough stuff to my house.

I agree, packing does suck. We were thinking about moving closer to where my husband's transferring to school (just across town), but the prospect of packing and lugging things up and down stairs changed my mind.

I've been in my new place for two weeks. We have all the necessities unpacked, but there are still packed boxes laying all over the place. I just can't bring myself to tackle them!

On the plus side, it's my last day of work! I have three weeks to slack off, and maybe get the rest of my house unpacked. I'm sure my fiance will have a list of stuff for me to take care of around the house while I'm off, too. 🙁

Hey Zman,

My fiance is in the geological sciences program - focusing mainly on hydrogeology. Sometimes I'm a bit envious - getting to explore and be outside so much. On the other hand, we will get to do a lot of pretty cool things ourselves.

The UWM area can be a great location if you find the right place - lots of pubs and ethnic restaurants nearby, plus Lake Michigain so close. The downside - construction and traffic.

Ok, here is the scoop on keeping out of state car registration.

Today I talked to the Wisconsin DMV, California DMW, and Geico.

People who plan to establish residency need to register their cars and get a new license within 30 days.

Since we are going to be students, we can choose not to do so. Students (temporary residents) are supposed to change their status within one year. However, this is not enforced and if you (claim at least) return to your home state each summer, you start up again with another year (this is from the mouth of the Wisconsin DMV people).

Anyway, California doesn't care if you live somewhere else, you can still keep your license and registration with CA. Just make sure you send them a change of address form (download it from the CA DMV site). They will even let you renew your license by mail from wherever you are.

As for registration and smog testing. If you live out of state and still have a car with CA plates, when CA sends you the renewal notice, you just fill out a portion that states you are exempt since you don't live in CA and bingo, you are all set.

While I may still switch over eventually, there is no need to rush into anything since my car is registered in CA until the spring and I don't see CA sending me a refund for my pro-rated registration fee.

I'm actually planning on changing over to a Wisconsin License and plates ASAP. I'm currently in NY and the insurance rates are prime around these parts - I'm paying close to $2000 a year! Hopefully making the switch will save me some cash.

Stike that - I just found out from Allstate that keeping my NY Licence and plates will not affect my insurance costs and that I should expect a much lower price than what I'm currently paying. 👍

Holy moley. I pay $32 a month for car insurance... woohoo for really cheap cars.

😱 $32/mo? Do you have collision, comprehensive, ect, or just the very minimum coverage? Do you recommend a particular insurance company?

I have something just a little better than PLPD (personal liability and property damage). My husband has "better coverage" (what he just said when I asked him what he has), and he pays just over $40/month. Our rates are a little lower because he's over 25 and we're married (yes, being a married female negates the age thing, since I'm under 25). But still, not shabby.

And we have State Farm.

I only have liability but also pay just over $30 a month through Progressive/Drive and I'm under 25. Then again its a '95 with a 4 cylinder, not exactly a high risk car.

does anyone know if the school has a policy on missing exams due to illness? Do you fail or have a chance to make it up later?

I always seem to get sick at the worst times

If you're really sick (like one student who got this crazy infection after her wisdom teeth were taken out and was in the hospital) or some other major thing (i.e. people have missed because of childbirth, their own or their spouse's), then you can miss. I'm not sure if you make it up or if it just doesn't cont into your final score. (I'm pretty sure it's the latter...)

Here's a weird/dumb/strange/offtopic question.

My mom swears that there's some other building on the other side of Highway 45 as the regional medical center (in other words, to the west of the highway right after exiting) that has a MCW sign out front. What is that building? I don't recall ever seeing it myself.

That's the "MCW Research Park Center". Everyone in my family thought that was the actual school the first time they drove by it. Not sure what exactly goes on there, but it sounds like the building is the headquarters for some different healthcare research initiatives.

Is anyone interested in going to the Brewer game this Thursday, July 28th? The game starts at 7:05, we could head down there around 5:30 or so to tailgate. Tickets can be purchased at the gate.

For anyone already living in Milwaukee, what type of internet service do you have. I called SBC today and to get their DSL service and unlimited local phone service it would cost a little over $50 a month. Does anyone know of anything cheaper in the Milwaukee area. Also, the Brewers have home games the weekend before classes start if anyone would be interested to go and tailgate. I'm not able to go on the 28th since I'll be visiting by brother at Dartmouth.

Hey Guys,

Anyone know what the deal is with the packet with information about the student health insurance and the form it sounds like people are filling out applying for that coverage? I never received anything pertaining to insurance in any of the mailings and upon bugging the office twice for this packet I have received in return a viewbook and another copy of the second big mailing (minus insurance info again). Any help would be very appreciated, as I want to make sure I get coverage ASAP!

SBC is almost always running a promotion. To get the promotional rate, you have to ASK for the promotional rate (they certainly won't tell you about it) and agree to stay with them for one year. You also have to mark your calendar for a year from now and ask for it again, because otherwise they'll pop you up to the normal rate and go on their merry way.

Some people use the Time Warner Cable RoadRunner service instead and they're quite happy with it. It's not as good a deal for me because I don't have a television, so I just wrestle with SBC over my rate periodically.

Since i am not going to need a phone line, I must resort to getting cable internet. Earthlink as a deal now for Cable internet priced at 29$ for the first 6 six months and 41$ after that. Earthlink also has DSL which is cheaper.

Honestly, i am hoping that someone around me has wireless internet i can bum

I was thinking the same thing about the wireless internet!

I'm not getting a phone line; I figure it's worthless when I have a cell phone.

Are there deals for getting cable internet plus cable TV? I'm willing to sacrifice the cable TV if I must, with some tears, but not the cable internet. I'm at my mom's house until the 1st, with dial-up internet, and I'm going absolutely crazy. It takes forever to check my email, let alone get on SDN!! 🙂

Uh oh. I'd call them again and hound them. They wanted that stuff by Friday!! Since I got taken off the waitlist, I got mine in an entirely separate packet. Good luck DoctorFunk!!

Cable TV is pretty expensive....it will run around 50 bucks a month with time warner. It is prob cheaper to get cable internet (around 35 a month with earthlink or roadrunner) and dish network (25-30$) for the TV.

There is a package discount for TV+internet+phone line. There is also a package for TV+ internet but you have to get the fancy tv channels that runs 69.99 a month 😱

I was thinking the same thing, but then tried using my cell phone in my new place. I get between 0 and 1 bars everywhere in my house. According to a couple people I have talked to, Wauwatosa has a lot of areas that are sinks for cell phone and television reception, so I must be in one of them. Beware to anyone living in Tosa!

I wound up with digital phone service from Time Warner and am pretty happy with it.

Road trip!

I'm glancing through the "Weird Wisconsin" book that I just got. It's a collection of all the weird places, people, and bizarre happenings in this fine state.

Among the stuff is the Museum of Medical Progress in Prarie du Chien, which is a bit of a drive from Milwaukee, but might be a fun adventure for a day. This obviously would have to be a day during the weekend or something once the school year revs up. Or even the weekend right before classes start. See the light-up mannequin with her innards showing! Enjoy in gruesome detail the experiments with "the man with the hole in his stomach," and more!

Anybody interested? There's tons of cool stuff in this book. Hell, we could visit a bunch of places throughout the year.

Sounds interesting. There is also a really cool looking exhibit temporarily at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago called Body Worlds. In this exhibit real human specimens, preserved in a process of plastination, are displayed doing activities like running and horseback riding.

Check out the website: http://www.msichicago.org/bodyworlds/index.html

I think this would definitely get us in gear for anatomy class. However, these are obviously not the things to do if we want to get our minds off medicine so we should go soon. Also, the exhibit only runs through September 5th.

That exhibit is amazing. A bunch of us went at the end of the year (early May, maybe?) and it was really interesting. It might be good, too, if you don't have any anatomical knowledge to give you some idea of the craziness that is the human body. My favorite parts were the embryos and the blood vessel family. You'll see.

Have you guys gotten the email yet with the pre-Orientation week activities? I think they start Tuesday, the 2nd (which is in like five days... yikes!). It should be a great way to get together and meet some new people, including a bunch of M-2s.

I just got SBC DSL hooked up and so far I'm happy with it, though it has only been a day. I got the DSL express (the slightly slower one) for 14.95 a month for a whole year. You have to have a phone line through them and they claim the rate is good for online sign up only. I don't notice much of a difference between this and cable though I haven't tried downloading anything. It's worth checking out though. Just beware that the service reps try selling you everything and when downloading their software they try putting a bunch of crap on your computer.

I can't believe that nobody has posted since 7-28. Well, I moved into Normandy Village on 8-1. It sucked. Lots of stairs. Found the public library today, so I get to use the internet!! My cable's getting hooked up next Thurs morning. I already have CPR certification, so I get to skip that session. Didn't really want the cable guy there without me. The earliest they could come was Tues.

Anyway, anyone going to the pre-orientation stuff? Kinda nervous about showing up and not knowing anyone, but no one else knows anyone, right?

I will be at most of the pre-orientation stuff and I don't know anyone else either...so hopefully I will see you there.

I can't go to the one tonight and tomorrow, but I will be going to the picnic. Anyone planning on going to the fair afterward?

could someone please forward the pre orientation activities email to me....i left them on my computer in atlanta. [email protected].

For those of you who are bored...the Miller tour is free (and pretty cool) and they will hook you up with 3 glasses of beer before you leave. There is a casino that is also entertaining not far from the school and the beach is also enjoyable.

On a side note....why does I94 smell like foul beer?

pratik7 said:

A: Because of the proximity of that section of I94 to the aforementioned Miller Brewery.

I used to think that it stunk, but I've kinda grown fond of the yeast smell (I reminds me a little of bread baking).

Also, as for not knowing anyone at the pre-orient stuff....at some point you're gonna have to know someone. I strongly recommend doing that before orientation so that you have friendly faces around when you're all lost (it's always nice to be in a group of clueless people rather than be alone and clueless). Good luck with orientation, everyone. I'm on an away rotation this month so I'll miss out on the annual new-people-wandering-around-aimlessly festivities. Take care.

I also moved into Normandy Village on 8-1. Things went well, there's only a few snags I need to worry about. If anybody is bored in the next couple days give me a call and we can meet up perhaps. My number is in the contact list I sent out.

This is my paranoia speaking...but people wear casual "every day" clothes to the orientation stuff next week, right? If I show up in shorts and a baseball cap for the initial registration and all that it's cool?

Bored? Try being bored with no car 🙁 At least I can look out my front window and gaze at the school. Not that I won't be getting enough of that place over the next 4 years. 😀

As for paranoia, I'll be wearing shorts as well so at least there will be two of us there out of place 👍
