Can you paint with all the colors of the wind? I know I could... if I wanted to, I just don't want to. Does that mean I can't do it? No. Because, like a squirrel in the backyard frolicking amongst the trees I am interconnected with nature. (Or I will be when I go squirrel fishing, and there's a squirrel on the line.)

every night in my dreams

i see you

i feel you

that is how i know you go on

far across the distance
and spaces between us
you have come to show you go on

near
far
wherever you are

i believe that the heart does go on

once more
you open the door
and i you're here in my heart and
my heart will go on

and on

(for Andy)

Honestly, Marc, if that song gets stuck in my head, I might find you and beat you up.

But congrats on being almost done with first year, kids!! Enjoy the "end of year" feeling, because next year you will NOT be able to enjoy it... sad stuff. 😛

My soul is honored that you would devote your 500th post to it's demise, Marc. It wants to know if you like butter and salt, or cinnamon sugar on souls.

That sounds like something worthy of Charlie the Unicorn.

Candy Mountain Charlie!

You guys have a choice. Option A, or Option B?

MCW registration week is like a UW-Madison reunion. How long is it before people let go of undergrad?

I'll let you know when our class does.

Nah, seriously, when people make new friends it will be okay.

SPLAT BREAK KNEECAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RAAWWWWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Beautiful gardens and museums surround Wade Park Lagoon.

Update: The class of 2010 is starting to become less of a "madison" reunion.

Also, they took a bunch of EKG stuff out of the notes this year. heehee

How much is Cowley lecturing? Not like he lectured about EKG stuff and how it's used now with his whole 3 lead thing, but I liked the EKG section, once Splat helped me understand the J-point.

which I no longer understand.

well, i think i sorta do. I'd have to review the finer points though.

I was looking at my phys notes the other day (to let one of my friends borrow my equation sheets), and I reviewed J-point for all of 1 second. I'd have to look at the page a little more than just reading "J-POINT" to understand it again, too.

I fully endorse the revival of our thread. Long live 2009 (and let May 2009 come soon).

My random annoyance of the day: receiving a coop schedule last night around 10:00 that tells me I need to write a coop today. Boo. Turns out I am also scheduled to write on the Friday that we leave for spring break, a day on which I am already committed to sunning myself on a Maui beach. Let's hope they audio record that lecture for all of your sakes. 😉 Oh, and if anyone wants to take my shift at the free clinic on the second Saturday of spring break I wouldn't have to no-show due to my case of Maui Fever.

Cowley doesn't lecture at all this year.

J-point? I've heard no mention of a J-point. Does that come later?

Cancel that. I googled it.

Bite me. I'll be staying in WI studying for spring break and not going to Maui for spring break.

Indo, you're missing out by not learning about the J-point. Cowley taught about it in the EKG section, it's where the vector points away from the injury or something like that.

Yeah 2009!!

I think I'm just going home for spring break to be lazy. I'll probably just sit on the couch, and then drink in the evening. Kinda like here, except I won't have to cook all my meals.

I decided not to do Saturday clinic this year. Pretty much for the reason expressed above: you always get scheduled on a day that doesn't work for you. Plus I wasn't feeling all that charitable in August.

I lucked out last year when it came to scheduling at the free clinic, so I suppose I was due. I've already informed one of the managers that I may come down with a mysterious illness that weekend, and he assured me that they are lacking the manpower to do much of anything to those who skip their shift (I guess last year they actually "fired" some people after no-showing).

But yeah, I feel less charitable with each microbe or drug that they are making us cram in this year.

they were desperate for phlebotomists, so they told me I'd only get non-test weekends..and sure enough, I got all the best non-spring break, non exam weekends. It pays to be desperately needed. That and the phlebotomists (at least, i do) get away with not wearing a shirt and tie even though they tell us to...screw that. I wear a polo and roll up my white coat sleeves to look more lab-techy. All I need is some funky music, a punk haircut, eyeliner, and fancy clubbin' clothes and I'd be on CSI.

This explains why one of my friends got all the crummy weekends for phlebotomy. If you wear enough eyeliner and take a picture, maybe I won't tell her it's your fault!

Now that sounds like a lab! The only experience I've had with the phlebs at the free clinic was with a certain dude in our class who had the audacity to give me alot of back talk when I brought in a patient who needed an HIV test towards the end of the morning. Evidently I was supposed to intimately know all of the forms that needed to be submitted and the blood-sucking protocol despite our orientation not going over anything like that. I am not exaggerating when I describe the situation as a typical "attending physician bullying an idiotic M3" style verbal beating.

Needless to say I sat there with a "bitch, you crazy?" look on my face the entire time while staring down at the little guy. If there hadn't been a patient standing next to me, I would have spent a good ten minutes describing "proper team etiquette" to the DB myself. Possibly through the eloquent use of kidney punches and headbutts.

I provided music when I worked with you.

But I've become disenchanted with the whole "let's help people [for free]" when it sucks away from any time studying (after I got paid to do phlebotomy last year). Now, I'd much rather spend my time studying that poking people (and yes, I've gotten scared enough to study on most Saturdays, so even the "non-test" weekend didn't do it for me). They'd have to give me a "non-school" weekend -- which was the last time I did it -- last summer, before I busted my thumb ligament.

I didn't sign up for the saturday clinic because I hate getting up early.

Update 2: they took a bunch of EKG stuff out of the notes but it'll still be on the test. What the hell?

You mean stuff that's in the book chapter they told us to read? SOOO unfair! 😉

M2s, don't forget your track selections.

i'm going with 14, 15, or 16 for my top 3...I want some experience before I do medicine, and I want surgery done before Christmas. After that it was pretty random. I like the thought of having Peds first.

Those are my top 3 as well. I thought it would be nice to have those kind pediatricians show me around the hospital before getting beaten down by internists and surgeons.

i would love to scare some little kids with you.

did you pick them in that order, 14, 15, 16?

*Jumps up and down like an excited school girl*

I sure did! Wheeee!

(You're not going to go and rank your list completely different now that you know, are you?)

i hope you like silk.

Yeah. You need to be a cardiologist by 1.5 weeks from now.

I need to reorder my tracks. Stupid ortho being so selective for their elective. Also since they said don't do surg first if you want to do that... bah! it ruined my order.

What are you talking about? What selectiveness? More info please.

My order is:

12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9

I have absolutely no desire to do internal medicine, and will probably hate it. So I wanna get it outta the way.

Because they have one spot/month July-October. That's fairly selective. I was thinking it was really only July-ish, maybe August they only had 1 per month. I'd like to have a better chance of getting the elective by doing it in a month with 3 students/month.

My tentative order is:
1, 13, 14, 15, 16, 2, 3, 5, 11, 10

I really wanted to get psych and ob/gyn out of the way early.

Me too! We can be triple track buddies!!!

That was my original thought, but I have since been told that "kindly toward medical students" is not necessarily in the job description for pediatricians. Either way, I don't really care whether I kick ass in Peds, so it might as well be first. Hopefully we're in that 71% of students who get one of their top 3 choices.

So what electives (if any) are you all thinking of taking? I'm considering ENT because it's the most applicable to anesthesiology, but also would consider doing a Urology rotation.

Does it count as gunning if you band together as a triumvirate to make everyone on the team look bad, regardless of whether it helps your career or not?

Anyways, I'm thinking of the ENT rotation. That or maybe rads or interventional rads. I figure I could use the brush-up on anatomy and practice reading films, and interventional rads has the word "interventional" in it, which is also in the specialty I'm most interested in right now: interventional cardiology. That's reason enough for me. Well, that and the fact that 90% of the other electives have to do with neuro or PM&R. Ugh.

Ah, I see. I'm gonna go for the ortho elective if I get my big 3 first, but may not if I don't. I'm not sure if I would want to do it without having had surgery first, even though it's not a pre-req.

Otherwise I'm looking at rads, ENT, Sports and Spine rehab (PM&R), or plastics.
