Official MCW Class of 2009 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This whole cleaning out the house to move is not fun.

whichever is nicer. i don't know what your guys'sssz is like, but here we have a bunch of 50 year old women sunbathing their bodies to a crisp, giving Javad a very secure future.

but otherwise it's pretty nice. no alcholic beverages allowed in the pool area, but if its in a nalgene bottle i'm sure they wouldn't notice. not like they really patrol the pool anyway. but it's always clean!

Reserve's got a bunch of kids at the pool and college aged people I think. I've only been once in 2 years.

I'm gonna miss ortho.

What? Why? =(

Waffle, waffle, waffle.

The unwritten curriculum.
Always say you haven't decided yet. At least until next spring, when it's totally obvious that you've made your decision.
For now, play the game.

Hopefully I'll be on the service of the orthopod I did my summer research with last year. Then he knows I want to do ortho. "Oh yes, I'm interested in family med and ob/gyn." ugh. So I'm basically gonna have to say that through peds? At least surgery it will be true too.

A friend of mine who did ortho pretty much handled the medical issues for her residents. I'm not sure they even remembered that diabetes was a disease. 😉

What's a disease? I didn't go into medicine to help sick people... I want to work with healthy people who just happened to get injured. 😉

Cuz I really don't think I scored high enough.

Exactly. I even ruled out PT in undergrad cause there was too much helping the elderly stroke patients.

Excellent. Now I can waffle with pride. One last question though: if you have a rotation in your future specialty during third year is it a good idea to indicate your interest early on? I've heard that there are certain advantages to this if you're being truthful.

Yes, definitely. You want them (faculty, course director, etc.) to know you well. HOWEVER, this applies as long as you are performing well, are a hard worker, etc. If you're a douche (and I'm not saying you are, don't get me wrong), then things may not go so well.

For example, me and my urology rotation. I expressed interest, worked my butt off, and made a good impression (I think/hope). I've heard stories of people in our class in other specialties who did not make a good impression (came off as arrogant or whatever) on the chairman. Not a good idea.

Bottom line keys to success:
Read about your patients (Always try to read a little bit, every day).
Show interest.
Have a good attitude.
Work hard, but have a good time doing it. Remember, seeing patients is why you came to medical school.

So I'm basically gonna have to say that through peds? At least surgery it will be true too.

You don't have to commit to it. But at least play along. Showing interest validates the career choice of the attending/resident. Blowing it off angers them.

in fact, shoot for 2-3 hours per day. this will make a certain doctor ecstatic...beside himself.......

...over there.

You don't have to kill yourself over it. It's tough to do some days. Especially in July after you've just finished Step 1 when the last thing you want to do is study ever again. But even 15-30 minutes can make a difference. For example when it comes to the plan part of your SOAP note, or when your attending pimps you about your patient. You look like a total star if you can say "well, I was reading that a good treatment option for this is....". You don't have to be correct, but it's great if you can show them that you were at least thinking about it.

I'm actually going to disagree with Don. When people asked me what I was interested in, I told them, and they usually found that to be interesting and found ways to incorporate that for me. Like "oh, hey, that woman has questions about birth control" or "there are two patients here, one who needs a pap. Go see her", etc. It might be different because no one has any sort of inferiority complex about OB like they might about other fields, but I would say that you should tell the truth. Because the absolute worst thing you can do is get caught lying. Therefore, don't lie.

Of course, you can be tactful about it. "I'm going into ortho because I have the grades and the board scores" is *NOT* a smart thing to say (if you're nice, I'll tell you who I've heard say it on multiple occasions). However, "I really like surgery, and I did research in ortho, so that's what I'm thinking at this point," or, "I really like cardiology, so I'm thinking medicine and then figuring it out from there."

Kevin took 6 weeks off to do research, so he's doing psych with you guys. Fun times!

Funk, Ashers and Splat have all been tagged in an album. You *may* have to squint to see yourselves in the picture.

what if i just said "this whole medicine thing was a mistake and I'm only here to finish up and then I'm going to law school?"

My best friend asked me a few days ago if I knew anyone who wasn't planning on doing a residency... should I add you to the *very* short list?

no...but i fear after next week's performance i'll have to settle for something like derm or ortho.

Oooohhh please tell me who is so arrogant about ortho.

Don't get me wrong. I agree that lying is the worst thing you can do, and I don't advocate it. I'm saying that you should be vague. People may not want to hear that you've already ruled out their field as a career choice on July 3rd.

Usually I just listed whatever it was I happened to be considering at the time, which for me changed a bit from week to week during the first half of the year. Sometime around Family Medicine in February, I started telling people I was going to do Urology, and I got pretty much the same response as Xandie.

I've heard of at least two who are considering not doing a residency.

FYI...i have recently come into acquisition of 13 new screen protectors for the Palm TX PDAs. If anybody wants a spare, I will gladly provide you with one for a small fee of $1.25 to avoid losing any money on the deal. I ordered a pack of 13 from amazon and I'm sure i won't need all 13 lying around for awhile.

Ooooooh... put me down for 1. I screwed mine up and have lots of fingerprints/pollen underneath it. I don't know how I managed it.

Thank you sir...and a giant congrats to you too

Congrats Pratik! Yay for being done.

I kept forgetting to say it cuz every time I'd come online, my parent would yell at me to go pack up more boxes... yuck!

Speaking of boxes, I threw away three boxes full of class notes today. Had a huge smile on my face the whole time too...I bet the folks in my apt. complex think I'm a complete nut.

I'm having a hard time bringing myself to get rid of notes. So much money. But I don't want to pack them up and move them to my next place either.

I'll tell you when I see you, Captain Mayo. (Yes, I like making up nicknames. Just play along).

So who are we talking about here? Clearly you and I run in very different circles.

I've got a few files of things saved from my undergrad career. Almost every syllabus, most of my honors essays, and a few big exams from different classes.

but of course. I'm a recycling freak. Used to go thru the garbage when I had roommates.

Funk, I hope you didn't get rid of your psych notes from M1 and M2 year. The syllabus says those are to be used for reference. (Since they were so helpful in the class).

Splat, you should go tell some people in the library not to throw away blank pieces of paper.

No, grasshopper. Remember, the syllabus also says to read the Kaplan psych book.

I used First Aid for Psych and Lange Q&A.

i bet you voted for Nader. Thanks a lot for screwing me over!!!!!

I was tempted, but couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger, so I voted for Gore. In retrospect, if I had voted Nader I'm not sure I could have forgiven myself. Even my ex-hippy father who voted for Nader (first time he had voted since way before I was born) is pissed he did so after the last 6 years.

Not that any of that mattered, since we were both voting in MN which is pretty much the Democratic party's home planet or something. They're pretty much a lock to get the electoral votes every election.

Like oh nos! I knew I should have been more careful. Guess I'll have to go dumpster spelunking now. 😉

By the way, cleaning litter boxes is hard frickin work, especially in near 90 degree weather. Sometimes your spouse isn't lying when they say you have the easy job (in my case, scooping the boxes everyday).

well, you sure don't want her to have that job anyway, in case she gets pregnant!! (name that infection!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Yes you do... and the notes were so incredibly helpful too. I mean I honored every psych test ever... I mean, wait...

Know what sucks more than cleaning litter boxes... sunburns on the tops of your feet that go to sock lines. Yeah, not cool. I hurt. My good friend Lidocaine + Menthol + aloe vera isn't working either. =(

Although you have a republican governor. 🙁

I'm such a democrat it's not even funny. My brother is a republican and I don't think he knows why. So we cancel each other out every election.

Republican (but anyone who's around Marty for more than 5 min would know that since he can't go more than 5 min without making fun of me for it)... vote in Hawaii -- absolutely no impact.

Ooh, ooh! I know something. TOXO! Yay OB/GYN.

Moving on... 100% dem. I took one of those online political party tests, and that's what it came up with. I'm particularly proud of the 0% republican and 0% Nazi parts.

Just wanted to say "what what" to my SDN posse before I make the great exodus to the rolling plains of South Dakota until next Friday. Let's hope I don't get trampled by buffalo.
