Official MCW Class of 2009 Thread

And in between the "PASS" and the 2-digit number.

Thanks Ashleigh! I literally starting shaking and thought I was gonna puke opening that paper. One of the most stressful moments in a long time.

Holy crap. Not "I got a Don-quality score", but way better than I thought I did when I walked outta the exam.

I've never understood - what does the 2-digit number mean?

I did a lot worse than I thought I would. =( I think it's still considered "good" though, I've been googling stuff regarding step 1 scores and ortho residencies all afternoon. (Felt worse based on how I felt after, the score predictor with Qbank, etc. -- at least I didn't fail like my nightmares had been telling me I would. 😉)

The two digit isn't the percentile. Some residency and lisencing programs use that instead of the 3-digit score.

WHEW! I feel better.

not only that, I was 2 for 2 on rapid strep tests in the ER!! go me!

😳 just curious how MCW folk do on that there test

apologies for sounding harsh. I was on a load of PCP. after I made my previous post I proceeded to throw my refrigerator off the balcony and ate several taxis.

i still don't plan on sharing my score, but suffice to say I am pleased.

congrats. I'd love to score something like a 230 (or 260, ahem), but I'm pretty sure I'll be satisfied if I can score the national average.

PS: truck batteries really wash down the aftertaste of a yellow taxi

Ok, so someone not skewed like I am. What's a good score? Anything with a 2-digit of 99?

It's really bugging me, mainly because of stupid med friends predictor (which when I submitted my actual score and my last 300Q %, I dropped the predicted score a few points). Hehe. I didn't even get within the +/- of my predicted. =( Other than that, I'm alright, just really curious. =)

i still, after reading explanations, don't understand the 2 digit score.

At what point does the 2-digit score reach 99?

I don't think a "good score" can really be definitive. A good score for one person and/or specialty may not be for another.

This stuff really sounds unnecessarily complicated.

According to all the chat in Step 1, the scores were 235/98 and 236/99. Apparently, also according to people there, that's lower than previous years.

No scores down here in Oak Creek yet. Guess I'm waiting until tomorrow. 😡

Hey Gimlet

Is the practice shelf exam the 61 "Factoid Questions?" I can't find anything on Angel that actually says "Practice Shelf," and I was thinking he said it was going to be 71Qs.

Did you figure this out yet? I haven't looked at it, but I'll take a gander and get back to you. I actually had totally forgotten about it until you mentioned it.

I was on call for psych at the VA this weekend. Pretty sweet gig - 8:30-10:15 on Saturday, and 8:30-11:00 today.

Haven't figured it out yet. Still hoping that it's just the 61Q dealy.

Sorry you don't have scores yet. It's nerve-wracking no matter what.

Well, I experienced my first ever hard drive crash this week. I lost everything, but I'm going to take my HD to a data recovery place this week (with a little luck). Sure wish I'd have backed up. 🙁

ouch! that sucks. I have two hard drives, so I recently backed my "My Documents" folder onto my big storage drive (it's 250 gb, and I've already used up 100gb of that - 40gb of videos tend to do that pretty fast). If my apartment burnt down though, I'd be screwed.

get one of those "fireproof" safes and put your backups in there. then they MIGHT have a chance. of course, I once put my gerbils in one in case the apartment burned down and they didn't even wait for a fire to die. so they're probably not all that they're cracked up to be.

Take that. Came home from my Golden Weekend out of town to find out that they can never ever ever make me do anything remotely related to second year again. Hallelujah.

Funk, we operated on one of your NICU patients today.

Does anyone know the SMTP and POP3 address for our email so I can get outlook back up and running.

Thanks.

...and no, you can't know my step I score

I sense bitterness. 😉

nah, I wouldn't tell either. Other med students will judge you like no-other if they knew your score. I'm pretty sure you all did well though. Congrats!!!!

I passed at least. But unfortunately my worrying about not passing made it so I didn't email ortho about the service I wanted to be on (for November), and it's taken already b/c it's a shared service. humph... my research preceptor (reconstructive guy) shares with sports med apparently, and someone's requested sports med.

I can tell you I'm awesome at:
Behavioral sciences
Hematopoietic/Lymphoreticular systems
Micro/Immuno
Musculoskeletal, Skin & Connective Tissue
Nervous System/Special Senses
Renal/Urinary
Respiratory

don't know how the renal, nervous, respiratory and behavioral sciences creeped in there.

and somehow I suck at:
Cardiovascular
Gross Anatomy/Embryology
Nutrition
Reproductive/Endocrine -- I'm guessing that's because of reproductive

You're awesome at more things than me. Ashleigh, you're Awesome!!

I'm awesome at:

Behavioral sciences
Hematopoietic & Lymphoreticular Systems
Histology & Cell Biology
Nutrition

I suck at:
Gastrointestinal System
Renal/Urinary System
Respiratory System

Good thing I'm not interested in medicine huh.

Anyone know anything about TVs. Mine won't turn on. Worked fine yesterday. ~2 years old.

If we had combined our areas of awesomeness and suckiness, and taken a group test, we would've gotten like a 290. 😉

Did we ever learn nutrition? 😉 (j/k I think I remember hearing something once or twice about the US getting fatter, and maybe some vitamins).

I give all the credit on nutrition to my 2 undergrad classes - 1 at U of MN and 1 at MN State.

If only we had group step 1...

I know they have buttons and plug into the wall. The buttons usually turn it on and change channels. Here ends my knowledge of the functioning of TVs.

hhhmmmm... that all makes sense. But the button on the end isn't doing anything. The silence is horrible!! HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!

I spose I could listen to music. I am supposed to be writing up an H&P and all.

The only things I remember from my nutrition class I took my freshman year in college is "pica" because when we had it in lecture I was chewing on my pen cap, and on one of the mult choice exams, a wrong answer for "hitting the wall" was "smashing pumpkins."

Edit: oh yeah, and I had to do some poster project to make the class honors, and I did that on osteoporosis. Where I made a survey and asked a bunch of my friends how much milk they drank.

I think the outgoing SMTP server is only smtp.mcw.edu when you're on campus, using their network. My SMTP server is smtp-server.wi.rr.com (I've got Roadrunner).

Does the outlet it's plugged into still work? If it's plugged into a power strip, make sure the strip is on, and it didn't short-circuit or blow a fuse. If you hit the power button on the TV, does it make any noise? Does it turn on at all (e.g., if you hit MENU, will it show stuff on the screen, or is the screen totally black)?

if it's a DLP or rear-projection, it could've blown a bulb, I think. If you're friends with Derrick W., he might be the guy to ask. He's a real technophile (I bought my TV from him last summer via Craigslist, haha).

Yes, it's plugged in smart ass.

It's plugged into a power strip, and everything else plugged into that has power.

It doesn't make any noise or attempt to turn on at all.

It's not fancy. I can't afford DLP, plasma, etc. It's a 27" Magnavox + DVD/VCR. I got it while still working at Home Depot for a good price. Like I said, 2 years old, no prior problems.

Finally got my score today. The extra wait was worth it...hit my goal and then some. 🙂

Sorry April, I wouldn't have a clue about the TV.

Congrats, Gimlet.

I'll see you at the sure to be 2 hours exciting psych lectures tomorrow. 🙄

Thanks guys! Congrats all around, if I haven't given them already.

Ashers, at least I won't have to admit a patient late tomorrow. But I'm charging my PDA tonight in case I need to distract myself by moving jewels into groups of three.

Well, try looking on the back for a reset button. It may be red and obvious or it may be hidden and possibly recessed. Or there may not be one, so don't drive yourself nuts. In the absence of a reset button try unplugging the whole thing for a couple of hours to let it kind of cool down. Then plug it back in and try again. Can't hurt, might help.

I came to school to study before lecture, and CPM is still here, and someone took my spot. 😡

I don't think third years are allowed to have a "spot" in the library any more. Sorry to break it to you. 😛

MUNCHKINS!!!!!

My new favorite psych disease is trichotillomania.

If it hadn't've been in an answer in Qbank, and on my boards, and in the boring peds psych lecture, I would've had ~15 min less entertainment in the past few months.

I still can't believe that trichotillomania's actually a named disease.

🙄 I didn't ask if it was plugged in. Does it have any LEDs on it anywhere? Some TVs have a red LED that will flash when something is broken. Like Denise said, try unplugging it for a few minutes/hours. Its power supply might be fried though. Does any part of the DVD/VCR unit work?
