Official MCW Class of 2009 Thread

Don't worry until you start getting info from podiatry schools.

Yeah, got those as well as mailings from the Caribbean until about a year ago. Glad that stopped.

It's a weird smattering of programs I'm getting stuff from. Anything from Mayo to Beaumount Hospital to NYU.

Can someone take away my massive craving for a cigarette?

I'll bet you smell like a delicious daiquiri.

come lick my face. it's double-edged razor smooth.

So who with a vacation in April wants to come visit me in London?

Looks like I'll be doing an ICU rotation (so much for easy, except maybe their 54 or 56 hour work week).

Anyone have advice for the CPR exam coming up on Wednesday? I've heard study the notes, but the notes and actual lectures didn't really correlate.

Thanks.

Just the notes, really. That's about all I did. Review your trauma and EM stuff too.

Good to see you tonight!

Have you guys been following the story about the pregnant lady and her daughter in Oconomowoc who died after being rear-ended? Apparently the drunk driver who hit her is a former orthopod who lost his license to practice after getting caught forging prescriptions for himself - AND he had 3 prior DUI arrests. He wasn't even drunk on alcohol during this crash, but messed up on a host of meds. Geez.

I can't study for this peds OSCE. I'm also freaking out about away rotations, residency, etc because I spent part of the day in surgery with my advisor telling me to not apply to all the places I want to, I'm wasting an away rotation by doing it in CA, and "at least you have your step 1 going for you." After telling me, "That's not a very good program, but I guess you're competitive there." BLARG!

Then I had the ortho 5th year trying to convince me to not do ortho, and how anesthesia's got a "really sweet deal."

Maybe I should do anesthesia... Dr. H. Liu could write me a good letter I bet. 😉

ironic.

My advisor told me that I would be wasting my away at Madison too, so go figure. I think I'm switching to anesthesia, but I've giving myself until 4:20 tomorrow when I can log into Oasis to freak out and switch back to ortho.

BTW, the VA folk were talking about the ortho car crash thing and they said he did his ortho residency here. they remembered him as a resident. didn't really say much more, but some seemed to be aware he had alcohol and drug problems.

Gimlet, the anesthesia dinner was great. And it's nice to see people outside one's track too. And thanks for the CPR exam tips.

The resident made some good points like all these guys really know only their program, and to take everything I see on orthogate, hear from my advisor and what the residents tell me with a grain of salt.

It's really just kinda depressing to hear, "No California for you!" Then he tells everyone to apply to the same programs (academic powerhouses -- ugh).

yeah. hey, you can't get in if you don't apply though. so if you really want to go to CA, i say go ahead and add them on eras.

spose i should go study again...

mmmm... chipotle coma.

So catching up on my Chelsea Lately on the E! network. Normally I think this show is hilarious. But on Monday night's episode (I think it was a repeat), Jenny McCarthy was on. She urged everyone watching to personally call the white house and ask for the resignation of the director of the CDC because they haven't done anything to help the moms of autistic children. Not sure what exactly she wants the CDC to do. Short of putting restrictions on vaccines based on unsubstantiated theories and faulty research that is.

If there's any new research out there on vaccines, I'm not aware of it, so please share.

Grrr.

Nope, Jenny McCarthy is just an idiot...par for the course, I suppose. She was talking about how vaccines cause autism on Larry King, too. I hate it when celebrities take up a cause - most of them are too stupid to get it right.

PS: When this whole measles thing broke during my peds rotation last month, I got such a kick out of all the parents that were hauling their kids into the office to get the vaccines they had refused the first time around. It's not quite the same when the disease is staring you in the face, huh?

Speaking of which, I need to get my Tdap boosted. Hope I don't get adult-onset autism...that would really hinder my efforts on Step 2.

I got my booster on Halloween when I got my flu shot. They should've checked my pertussis titers earlier... I'm pretty sure I had whooping cough before 9th grade, but was never officially diagnosed. My parents don't believe in going to the doctors unless we're dying, so my dad just brought an inhaler home for when I couldn't breathe.

I got mine in December. But beware with the Tdap. I know one person that got a bill for it, but luckily I didn't. Was going to Sargeant for an appointment anyway. Get it at occupational health to avoid a possibility of paying hundred some dollars.

I hate Oasis. It thinks I have too many courses listed, so one of my vacations is "reserved" about 20 minutes at a time, and then disappears. I'm guessing it's because I have a course listed in June. Not a big deal, but it means I'll have to deal with the hassle that is the registrars office.

Yeah, Occupational Health is good for all those shots, they're never too busy. I also had to get my MMR boosted in December since my rubella titer was low.

At least my schedule is full now.

I was all confident in my decision to go into anesthesiology this morning.

Then I briefly spoke to my mom this afternoon. "it's dumb that you need to decide before you've had ortho." "you've always planned on ortho." "I'm just afraid you'll get bored." Then she had to run off to work.

My confidence has been shaken. This sucks. This is why you should never tell anyone what speciality you're thinking off. I feel roped in.

Well, what kind of music do you like?
Prodigy = gas
green day and tool = ortho

What do you want to wear while working?

Huge space suit = ortho
fanny pack = gas

What equipment do you want to use?

fancy fax machine = gas
cordless drill = ortho

well, in that case, its 3/3 ortho.

I actually decided during general surgery that one day, when it was my OR, I'm listening to Tool all day long.

I don't like Tool or Green Day much... Prodigy's OK, but nah. I've been listening to more Foo Fighters and ska stuff recently, my dad plays the Beatles and John Denver in the OR.

So is there a new deadline to decide, akpete? 🙁

Tool just takes itself a bit too seriously for me.

My wife complains to me when I tell her I'm going to be blasting the heavy metal if I'm ever in the OR.

Jenny McCarthy is best known for her breasts, not her brains. I'm usually a little wary of taking medical advice from such individuals.

speaking of music.

never really listened to Tool.

someone name 3 good (best? whatever) Tool songs for me to...um ...sample.

nowadays the emo rock is all about how mad you are at your dad. I can't listen to that.

a friend's dad (orthopod) took her to a Korn concert when she was younger. haha

hmm, I just checked - I don't have anything by them in my iTunes, but Schism is one of their best-known songs.

these guys are better anyways (saw them in Chicago in March) - these songs have been played 92 and 93 times, according to iTunes.

Schizm = I know the pieces fit. I only know that one and the one with lots of growling and panting at the end. Weird.

I agree with that...rednecks and emotion don't mix well. I mean, look at nascar.

i thought it was about making out and cutting your wrists and OD'ing on sudafed?

there is a link to a jonas brothers you tube video on that youtube page! haha

...because you're mad at your father. **** YOU DAD, I'M NOT GOING TO GET A JOB!

I think Pink Floyd makes good anesthesiology music.

PS: The Brewers are losing their asses to the Cubs right now. Hopefully this beer (Bell's Hopslam, yum!) will comfort me.

My dad took me to a Beach Boys concert and a Five Iron Frenzy concert. My mom took me to see Paul McCartney.

We're not allowed to bring Korn into our house or my mom will trash the cds.

what is a CD?

I saw Korn once. Meh. Really I was there for Sister Machine Gun. Likewise Rammstein was stupid but I was really there for KMFDM.

My favorite though (concertwise)? Gwar. Very messy.

Incidentally Tool is fantastic in concert. I saw them shortly after they released Lateralus. Good stuff.

what is a CD?

A shiny silver thing with music on it... may be confused with a coaster.

Those are all bands my brothers like. I like some Rammstein as long as it's in German.
