I figure it doesn't hurt. So far, in my experience, the offices/administrators have been really nice. The worst that'll happen is they say no - you must wait for an official invite, in which case at least they know you're interested in the program.

Revaldo - I'm irritatingly jealous of your UAB invite. When were you complete/was it by email?

Yes. Quit hatin' on me revaldo (i keep wanting to say revolver - but that's too violent)! I'm in a tough position right now and I don't deserve any sympathy. I have 9 invites but I haven't even been on a single interview yet, let alone have an acceptance in my hand! So - I can't turn down offers just yet but, at the same time am becoming a little overwhelmed. Someone should have told me I was being an idiot back in June.

I know this is NOT a bad problem to have but I'm starting to wonder how the hell I'm going to survive this semester!
 
J - thank you for withdrawing from Emory. I know they're a super long-shot for me, but I'm happier knowing I'm no longer competing with you.

With so many interviews the chances of you not getting an acceptance is likely low. I would start prioritizing. I know its hard without meeting the grad faculty, but for your own sanity you need to turn down interviews from places you are less interested in. Looking at your schedule I have no idea how you are going to keep up in your classes.
 
I agree with OncDoc - maybe after your 1st acceptance, you could tell your lower-priority schools that "After closer investigation, I feel your program would best be served by a student with more closely related interests. I therefore feel I must decline your interview offer. Thank you for considering my application, and best of luck."

I'm unsure how diplomatic such messages must be, so if anybody has comments about the above, let me know. I may be writing the same. Eventually. Hopefully. Maybe. In a rat's chance by the grace of God.

In other news, I'm trying to think of ways in which SDN folk can identify each other at interviews:

1. Writing screenname in bottom left corner of nametag
2. Code phrase ("So a girl with her laptop walks into a bar...")

Suggestions welcome.

The SDN code name/signal is hilarious, but actually not a bad idea.
 
October 15? They'll let us know that early? NO WAY - I thought it was a month or so... it would be awesome if it was a week but I think that may have been the case a few years ago

Like a previous poster said, it never hurts to call. The Director and the Assistant Director of the Northwestern MSTP are some of the nicest people and really do want to know if you are interested in their program, so even if they can't accommodate you, it won't hurt your chances later. Good luck!

Thanks. Hopkins was amazing. I was invited to interview at Penn at the same time, and also successfully rescheduled for 12/13 like you. It is also in the middle of my finals week, but I can't complain about a Penn interview. 🙂

j-weezy - I'm a guy. I'm not sure about the roommate thing - I haven't heard either way. I think the best way for identifying each other (and jlamacc1) might be call-and-response, specifically by using the word "addict":

Me: Have you ever heard of a website called the Student Doctor Network?
Fellow Applicant: Yes, I'm an addict!

Alternatively:

"Yeah, I visit it sometimes but I'm not an addict."
"I've heard about it, but those people are too neurotic for me. They're all addicts."
"Why? Are you an addict, too? Do you want to join the support group? Just talk to me: I'm not only a member - I'm also the President!"

If the other person is not a fellow SDNer, you can save the conversation by telling them about the site:

"Have you ever heard of a website called the Student Doctor Network?"
"No. Why?"
"You should visit. There's an MD/PhD forum where we all share information among fellow applicants. It's a good resource. The URL is ...."

If the person doesn't immediately answer somehow with "addict" (perhaps they're in a group setting and don't want to draw attention), they could come up to you later when you're alone and say:

"About SDN, I really should've said that I'm an addict. I don't like to admit that fact in public."
"Admitting you have a problem is always the 1st step."

If people aren't happy with "addict", individual code words for each member (or code traits) might work

"On SDN, there's this guy, Inuranic, he must look like George Clooney." (or any reference to how handsome Inuranic is)

I'm having way too much fun with this.

Rebuttals against my previous suggestions:

1. MSTP administrators could spot a screenname on your nametag, and find the SDN forums. So let's not leave the possibility of having our words used against us to chance. Not that we'd actually say anything bad, but privacy is important. Yes, I'm being paranoid.

2. The code phrase ("So a girl with her laptop walks into a bar...") might be awkward if it misses:

"So a girl with her laptop walks into a bar..."
"Yeah?"
"She sits down, orders a pint, and logs onto the internet. Stop me if you've heard this one before."
"No, man, go on."
"Um...She checks e-mail, posts on SDN forums, talks to some people online, maybe buys a book on the philosophical underpinnings of 19th century French expressionism."
"Okay, I hear ya."
"Her friends come, she tells how the MD/PhD application process is going. They talk about her deep existential longing for purpose in a steadily unraveling world. She closes her laptop as they have a fun night out."

Do you think the distraction technique would also work well for awkward moments during the interview?

If anyone interviews with me in the next ~2 months, I should be easy to spot. I'm the girl on crutches and/or with my leg in a boot.

What kind of shoe am I supposed to wear on the other foot? Heels are out of the question. (Besides the comfort factor, I personally would laugh at anyone trying to manage crutches w/one high heel & the other leg braced.)

In other news, I think my Penn application is finally done... I just can't let go of this one! Holding onto the secondary app makes me feel like I'm still in control of my fate. I just have to give it up & realize there's nothing magical I can write on that app that will convince them to take me. Sigh.

Ohh that sucks! You should look for some cute flats. Biviel has awesome shoes. I promise you can find cute flats and if you wear pants no one will probably notice you aren't wearing heels.

hahahaha yeah, ill probably be the easiest SDN addict to spot. A username close to my actual name and being 6'7" = easy to pick out.

I liked NYU! Except the dorm building, which seemed really old. I got a friendly feeling from the faculty there, and that they accept half the interviewees is a big relief, because I could really see myself going there

Any idea what the interview set up is like? They offered me the 11/5 spot, but I'm at PSU/Hershey 11/4-5. Their site says that they put you up for 2 days and you're supposed to arrive the day before the interview. I didn't know if that meant you arrive Sunday night for a Monday interview of Monday night for a Tuesday interview (in which case I could have interviewed with you!).
 
You arrive for Sunday night, then interview Monday and Tuesday.

It looks like a fun time.
