Yeah, still no email for me either. Big ups to Marie for posting the email; I am quite grateful.

Thank you.

So what do you guys think? Will cramming it in to 7 weeks be better than taking it with a full load in the fall? I'm excited to start, but it's going to be thrown at us hard core I'm sure. I can't wait to get more details!

I guess it won't be so bad since that is all we are doing.

Yeah, I never received the email either. I was wondering if you guys received anything else in the mail after you sent in your deposit. I mailed in my deposit over a month ago and I was hoping to receive so more info, but so far I haven't heard anything.

Hmm, does anyone know if this means we'll be taking another class in the fall instead of anatomy, or will it be a lighter load because of the early anatomy? I am hoping the latter. That would make the fall semester a bit less stressful to adjust to.

As a current MSUCOM student, from what we have heard, your class will be taking anatomy in the fall in order to lighten up an excruciating load in the fall. It should make your fall semester considerably less stressful.

This makes me even more pleased with MSUCOM, it's really a school that seems to care about it's students. The only other school I visited that did similarly with their curriculum was SUNY Upstate, they tapered their course load so that first semester was "easier." I think it's awesome!

Can't wait to start in the summer!
What is it like during the summer in mid-state Michigan? Is it hot? Humid? Sunny or rainy?

Hi guys,

Wow! What a surprise! I just found the email a few minutes ago. It does change my plans a bit -- I'll probably have to move into my apartment a month early. It's kind of exciting to start over a month early; I've been wondering how I'd get through the summer.

On the down side, I'd been planning to work a lot of hours this summer (the overtime adds up fast) to buy some things for my apartment. I'm not sure if I'll be able to work when class starts. On the Fall schedule from class of 08, Gross was 4x/week, and theirs wasn't a condensed class. I'm also wondering if I should commute for the summer semester since I only live 1.5 hours away. I'm thinking not, because I'm not going to want the distraction of home.

I'd also planned some small vacations (Mackinac Isl/Tahquamenon Falls and maybe a week in Montana and Colorado). I guess I'll have to try do them earlier!

catcha later...I'm going to break the news to my bf

The weather is usually hot and a little humid (the humidity is worst in late July/August) -- shouldn't be too bad, probably mid to high 70s most days, with the occasional thunderstorm. July is usually a pretty nice month.

That sounds wonderful! I've been trying to mentally prepare my husband for the first semester schedule and home life adjustments. I would still expect it to be rough, but maybe a little more manageable if it is a lighter load. Keep us posted if you overhear anything interesting. Thanks!

is anyone ready to reschedule our get-together at Harrison's? I can be free any Saturday/Sunday

raDiOnut

I'm pretty much free any weekend as well. We should check out the basketball schedule and plan around that.

Hey All,

I havent been around in a while. My internet is goofy so havent been on. I too am excited about starting early. Caught a little of guard though! 😱
I need to get off my butt and get to Lansing to find an apt asap! Well I hope to see you guys sometime before July! Keep me posted on the get together. 👍

See Ya!

Great to hear; thanks!

Still no email for me, so I called the Admin office and had a copy forwarded. I spoke with Lorie who reiterated futruedo32's statement; but was unsure how MSUCOM planned to address orientation? Cramming anatomy into 7 weeks seems a bit challenging but I'm up for it if it reduces the stress of the fall semester.

Thanks again to all here on sdn for the head's up.

you guys should be happy with this change, it will make your fall load a little easier, but thats not why it was done. you most likely will have all of your clinical skills and DPR classes in the first term (usually spread out over two terms) as well as maybe take epidemiology first term. the push to change the curriculum is so that you all will be done with didactic work in may of year 2, take comlex in june, and be able to begin hospital rotations july 1. that gives you two more months in the hospitals than current students at COM (we start aug 29), and is a huge advantage because it means more possible out rotations. the anatomy course should be a breeze now, two hours a day of lecture and 3 days of lab a week, thats eazy time there... gl!

Did everyone get today's e-mail? It basically just says that the course will run July 11-August 25. The purpose is to lighten up the fall semester. Orientation will be July 7,8. Hope this helps.

Hello everyone!
Starting so much earlier has changed our plans for buying a home over summer. We won't have our Marquette property sold in time I don't think. So, to be on the safe side we are going to look at renting the first year.
Medic 170, did they put married folks with kids right in with everyone else on campus, or were they given there own area? What you have described thus far sounds terrible! We are very much backwoods folks, and I was hoping we could live out of town a ways, keep our chickens and all. What is the driving like if you were to come in each day from some of the surrounding towns? Would they have rentals? Anyone know of a nice organic farm with a vacant trailer for rent (ok, now i am dreaming!).
What are good sources of listings for rental houses in the general area? Is there a website?

I wonder how the summer class will change the scedule of those of us considering the extended program?

Ah, the saga continues...still no email(s) for me; bummer! At least I received the secondary application email. Marie, thank you once again for the post. I am very grateful to be kept in the loop. I will have to call the Admin office again to see wtf?!?

I'm going apartment shopping this Saturday. I'm going to check out Briarcliffe first. I'm impressed with what I see online so far, so I'm going to have my bf check it out with me. I'm not sure where else I'll look at. I'll have to do some more online surfing. So far, I've looked at the online descriptions of mostly AIMCO properties. I've checked out the MSU Apartment Search, but I'm not really impressed with my results there.

I'm glad our orientation is only July 7-8. My 21st b-day is the 9th and I already had plans made 😀

I'm looking for a roommate for my 3 bedroom house. The only downside to the house is that I live in Perry, or about a 20 minute drive to campus. Upside is you will have your own garage stall, your own bedroom, and I'm working on a 2nd bath so probably your own bathroom by July, you'll have privacy as my closest neighbor is 1/4 mile away. If this sounds appealing at all please email me at [email protected] to discuss.

It's a very beautiful home with a fireplace, hardwood floors and finished basement with a treadmill and weight bench.

See you in July, can't wait to get started!!

Try Perry, Mason, or Dewitt. Those are all a ~20 minute drive and I would expect rent to be cheaper out there than in Lansing/E. Lansing. I would suggest just renting a newspaper, or go to the Lansing State Journal website and look under houses for rent. I think the site is www.lansingstatejournal.com

edit-OK I did a search http://vh80040.vh8.infi.net/osform/...RealEstateRentalsForRentHomes&displayCount=50

If you go to 'homes for sale' section on the site, a map will pop up showing you where the towns are in proximity to Lansing, as well as which county they are in.
On that page there is one on Haslett Rd (which I'm guessing is in Haslett, my old town-and very close to MSU and E. Lansing) on ten acres, for $795/month.

Good Luck :luck:

Does anyone have any other suggestions for apartments I could check out (other than AIMCO apts -- some of those are already on the list)? I went to apartmentratings.com, but I'm not finding a whole lot else. advice, anyone?

And what you think is fair for what you want out of the house. I'd like to get $600/month plus utilities and you'd get your own bathroom, your own garage stall, your pick of the three bedrooms and access to massive amounts of storage.

If you want to use all three bedrooms and have me move into the basement, which I'm willing to do, and want to use two of the three garage stalls then I'd want $1200/month plus Utilities.

But if you at all interested please send me an email, these prices are negotiable and I will entertain resonable offers and will be more than happy to send pics or show the house. I just want to live with another med student so we could commute on occasion.

Send me an email [email protected]

Thanks,

Scott

I decided to apply for campus housing. I put down cherry lane as my first choice and Spartan village as my second. Rent is around $550 for a one bedroom furnished apartment, and its graduate housing only so i dont expect it to be too noisy. In addition, the CATA bus runs regularly. It seems fine to me, although i have heard some opposition to campus housing. Anyone else going for it?

yposhelley,

thanks for the link. I found 2 more I'm going to check out (Nemoke Trails, Dover's Crossing)

call the school and ask for the packet of information that was sent to last years incoming class for orientation, which contained a bunch of info compiled by students about where they live and the + and - of living there, along with costs and what not. i would think it is still around somewhere in the admissions office. its a good way to find out about out of the way places that are not listed in the apartment guides, or places you wouldn't think to look. call linda and ask her, she might be able to help. otherwise kathy would know the list i am talking about, you can ask her if its still available.

I hear ya, no email for me either about the recent developments. I had to call and have the last one forwarded to me, it makes the paranoid little voice in my head (the one created from two application cycles) scream that it's because I'm not really accepted or they crossed me off the lists... :scared:

Luckily, I'm not listening...much...I'll be calling tomorrow again... 🙄

Yeah, Briarcliffe sounds best for me too. Calling tomorrow to place a deposit...maybe we can get a study group started there...that would be awesome 😀

Ditto on the paranoia. I keep checking my email and sdn oh, let's conservatively say...hmmmm....every other hour. Obsess much?!?! Damn you technology!!!

If I end up there, or close by; I'm down for an 'in-house' study group.

I'll give you all my report on Briarcliffe after I check it out this Sat. I talked to the sales rep, and he said they have a "sale" on 1 bedroom apts for $519. I'm going to see if that's a legit offer and if I like the place, I'll prolly go with that. It would be fun if a bunch of us ended up there -- I'm always for study groups.

radionut; if you are going to briarcliffe, then really close by is the place my wife and i live, and its new and nice. call 272-1000 and i am sure they will let you take a look on saturday (and give you directions, the place is not listed in the apartments guide); but you need to call them today (friday), early. gl.

Hi ratch, I'll give them a call. What's the name of the complex you live at? If I don't like any of the apts I check out tomorrow, I'm planning to call MSU and ask for that packet you mentioned so I can get more ideas.

Just wanted to mention 2 things, I have been off sdn for awhile.

1. I am moving to briarcliff in may.
2. to whoever was applying for on campus apartments...DON'T DO IT. I LIVE THERE NOW AND IT SUCKS, IT IS VERY NOISY. It is a all pampered athletes, a few undergrads, and a FEW foreign grad students. It has literally been HELL living here and the management and cops WILL NOT reprimand athletes.

I currently live in Homestead and for the most part I love it! I have a 3rd floor apt, with fireplace, new carpeting, etc.. for $632/month. I have a two bedroom by myself. I found that to be a really good deal. It's about 4.5 miles from campus (14 min from apt to lecture).

let me know if you want more information about homestead!

PS, the office staff are way too nice. but they aren't hiding anything, I think they just really like their jobs for some strange reason. I was puzzled by it at first also.

I would also say avoid Berrytree. These are super close to where your lectures are, and really close to Fee. (probably one of the closest). They are way overpriced and a ton of med students chm/com live there, so you can never get away!!!

Hey, Medic! Haven't heard from you for awhile. Did you have your CHM interview yet? I missed the Wayne State interview.

This might sound like a stupid question (especially for a premed student), but my brother and I were wondering last night whether they store blood cold or warm. I thought it would be kept about body's temp, but he thought it was cold. Humorously, what started this was watching a vampire movie where they were drinking chilled blood. heh. I figured a paramedic would know. 😉

We'll be happy to have you!

I'm waiting for raDiOnut's report from his expedition earlier today. Also, they lowered their prices again! I got an email from Chad that the 1 bedroom is less than $500/month!

I just don't know if that means that's the price as long as I live there, or it goes back to the norm after a set amount of time. Anyone know about that? I emailed Chad back and he hasn't responded. I guess I'll call tomorrow.

From what I've heard from Medic and the people at Briarcliffe, the CATA bus goes by q10mins and it takes 15-20mins to get to Fee Hall. Sound good to me, and if you get a car later on, it's a 5min drive or so. Very close!

Happy Apartment Hunting!

ps everyone, got the letter from MSUCOM today with more specifics about the class! Whew! Awesome! I'm in the loop 😀

YPO, I was just wondering, did you ever decide btwn CHM and COM?

Thank you, so when does everyone plan on moving in. I was thinking mid june. I wonder if I can pay rent for just half a month.

Hi everybody,

I survived my apartment shopping expedition yesterday 😀 I went to Briarcliffe, Dover's Crossing, and Nemoke Trails. After visiting all 3, I decided to sign on w/ Briarcliffe. I paid the $200 to join the "future residents club" and I'll be moving in July 1st. Briarcliffe is ~1mi off US 127 and about 5-10min from Fee (not sure exactly how far, because I took a roundabout way to get to Fee yesterday). It's very easy to find your way around Briarcliffe and the area (btw, Meridian Mall is just a couple miles away).

I went to Briarcliffe first, and Amanda gave me the tour. The rates have been lowered (temporarily) to $479/mo for the 1 bedroom apartments (790ft sq). This rate lasts for the term of your lease (1yr in my case). That was by far the cheapest of the 3 apartments and also the largest of the apartments I saw. The kitchen comes w/ a dishwasher, stove, fridge, garbage disposal, lots of cabinets and counter space. The apts use gas heat I believe and utilities are extra. One of the selling points for me was that there is a LOT of storage space -- a big linen closet, 2 closets in the bedroom [1 is walk-in], and each apartment has a fenced in part of the basement for storing bikes/grills/whatever. The living room/dining room was pretty big, and there's a ceiling fan in the dining room side.

Also, Briarcliffe's first floor apartments are not partly underground like the others were -- that was a plus. The pool was kind of interesting -- half indoors, half outdoors. It wasn't anything special, but it is a pool and the indoor part is open year round. The weight room has about half a dozen machines, just the basics. It is clean, though and doesn't smell.

I was not impressed at all w/ Dover's Crossing. The apartment was smaller, smelled bad, and the hallways were really dark. The room that the washer/dryer was in was like 100 degrees. The salesperson also took us to a dirty apartment! Needless to say, I didn't even take an application.

Nemoke Trails was nice, but more expensive and the apartment I could have afforded was almost 100ft sq less than the one at Briarcliffe. Nemoke was also a bit farther from MSU. If Nemoke had been cheaper, I might have picked it, but it was just a little too pricey for me.

So that's my report -- another A+ for Briarcliffe. Hope some more of you decide to join us there!

btw, medic I PM'ed you about Briarcliffe and the referral program

raDIOnut, thank you for all the info. I too was looking into Briarcliffe; great to hear...uh...read first hand about the apartments. I was planning to vist the L/EL area in March but with the change in schedule, decided wtf; I'll take a chance and go with my gut. So Friday, I spoke with Chad about the property and filled out an online application. I was sending my deposit tomorrow, but will have to call him about the $$; $479 seems very afforable. Well, it looks like another has joined the list of future residents. I plan to move on or near the 15th of June; it will be good to meet everyone irl. Thanks again to raDIOnut for all the leg work!!

Hey everyone,
I spoke to Chad and he told me that the $479/month is only for those who move in before March 1st. Is that what he told you? He said that if I want to move in in June I would have to pay $529/month. That sucks.
