Official NBME details from AAOMS

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
From last September, it was the same exam. An unfortunate reality. There will always be people who find a way to beat the system.

Those of you that took it last Sept then are in a good position. This was my first time and going in I felt OK based on the 3 NBME exams I had taken 2 weeks prior.

I closed off the exam filling in the last 4 questions with C as I had piss pore time management. My other blocks were rough as well. I wish this one would have went the way my practice exams went. I will see in a week but at the moment I am just looking forward just to watching some good hockey. What can you do....

Just finished taking mine....and all I can say is wow. There were def some WTF questions...but I will say Im glad i took it now. Lets just hope the grades stay balanced and they end up throwing those crazy questions out.

For those that took it last Sept, how long till they posted the scores/ where do we see our scores?

Does anyone else have a problem with people being able to take this test 2 says later than everyone else... I mean this test is basically gonna decide everything ...

I wouldn't sweat it too much. At worst, some people will get a few answers that their buddies remember, but that's it. I can honestly say nothing I learned in the last two days showed up on the exam. I'd argue that the Monday scores may be worse on average than today's test takers....

Can anyone tell me what will actually show up on our score sheets. Just our raw grade or our grade plus the % we fall in? Also do you think they drop questions we all got wrong.

I took it last September, and I don't think the exam was the same as last time. Those of you who took it, what do you think?

well that was fun ....

no questions dropped; the score is compared to the statistical pool from med students who took the exam throughout the years...

No one in my class is going to be sharing answers/having discussion with them about it. So really the only means they have to getting a few hints are here (or any other discussion forum about that specific exam) or friends at other programs.

Like Spif said, I would not sweat it.

Not fare at all. didn't they have their .... on friday anyway? what that has anything to do w/ an exam on Sat.

That test felt harder than the NBME 15. There were many WTF problems and many poorly worded questions. Well, let's' see what happens next week. I wish the test was curved in a way so that the raw score reflects the difficulty of the exam.

Does the fact that this exam only had 184 Q instead of the online NBMEs' 200 Q means that we can miss even less to get a good score? For the NBME's with 200 I've read that the # correct * 1.4 gives a good prediction and that has apparently been true for a lot of people.. Wonder how these are calculated.. I'm assuming they already have a predetermined score for each percentage correct instead of working that out after everyone has taken the exam?

For the ones that have taken this exam before can you tell us the correlation between your actual grade and how you thought you did after the exam. For example did you walk out thinking you did horrible like in the 30's then end up with like a 60-65 or what you thought you got you actually got. Thanks

It's normal to feel that way. But I guess it depends on your preparation. If you put in the study time then you will see results - don't worry. I think last time after the test I already knew like 20 questions I got wrong lol so I wouldn't stress out over looking crap up

Yeah I really feel like it was the same exam as last Setember too. A lot of biochem, genetics... Path I felt was not typical at all of what we are expected to learn. I will say my weak area is anatomy. Especially lower body anatomy and it didn't matter how much I studied for the anatomy I knew I wasn't going to have it memorized for those few anatomy tie-ins there were. Did anyone feel like the statistics questions were difficult? I could be wrong about it being the same exam. It's not like it helped anyway because I barely remember anything from the exam in September, but overall I didn't think it was too bad.

I walked out last year knowing I for sure got at least 50% correct and could narrow another 30% I wasnt sure about within 2, sometimes down to only 3 answers. Ended up with a 71. Still might retake.

Congrats man that's a great score according to the interpreted grade sheet. As every min passes I'm remembering questions and I'm getting half of them right and the half wrong....it's pure torture. I wouldn't mind taking it again... More knowledge the better off ill be in the future.

Anyone else feel that the last block was far easier than the other 3 blocks? Unfortunately by that time, my mind was tired and was second guessing myself on the easiest questions. Stamina is very important considering we're forced to wear foley catheters to take the test.

I agree. All the easy questions I missed I remember are from the last block.

I marked a lot.. But didn't have time to go over many of them

i thought the 1st block was the easiest. maybe it was because i had drank a redbull a few minutes prior😎

but really i thought block 1 was hardest, and block 3 was most difficult.

I thought it was harder than last year, any thoughts ?

last year I got 55 and after talking to pd here at OSU , I figured it really is a raw score kinda game. So, curve really not gonna do much. If there is a crazy hard question, getting it will help you break 80 or 90 and not getting it is just the default I guess ...

Remember, the raw score is compared with the med-student statistical pool which means fml

The sad part of it all is that to us this exam means everything and we are being grouped with the med student who have no need to get these questions dropped bc to them this is just a freakn Pre-exam. All they need to do is just group us together so that they see the real percentages. Just felt like getting that off my chest.

I feel you, but I really think that NBME scores will be a small component of the package. So many applicants still have NBDE I scores, even if 65 is the new 90, so many applicants got in with lower than 90 on NBDE in previous years, so scores below 65 still can make it ....

I think experience and " commitment to the profession" will be big instead of just retaking the exam, i'm done done with this **** , no september exam for me, plus i think september is too late for this cycle, my opinion though ...

No offense but it's obvious you are trying to make yourself feel better...

I disagree. I believe the exam will be one of if not the most important part of your app. Its the only objective way to measure people.

this will undoubtedly be an interesting year because not only is it the 1st time that PD's are using the NBME but because there still NBDE's to compete with. NBME def will be important, but i'd argue that this year it's important is hard to accurately characterize.

should be fun to meet some of you guys/gals on the interview trail 😎

This. 90+ is overemphasized.. most of the people I know who matched in the past 3 years didn't break a 90. There are a few programs that are sticklers for 90+, but most just think "the higher the better". Same will go for the NBME...

Uh no. I don't know what score you got, but you've got the wrong mentality. Either be happy with your score or retake it. Many harder things will come up in OMFS and you'll have to pick yourself up and keep trying until you're happy with the outcome.

Party time!!!!!

This exam was better the second go around for sure.

Observant Jewish and 7th day adventists who took the exam today apparently had completely different tests.

Oh wow. How were you able to confirm this? And what does this mean in terms of scores across the scale? Do they get the same amount of hard/med/difficult questions?

by talking about the stand-out ridiculous questions that we all surely remember (but i wont mention cuz i dont want to get in trouble 😎 )

i talked with a colleague this afternoon who took it this morning and we had very different exams.

Smart move on AAOMS's part in my opinion.

Well that is nice, as it would have been otherwise unfair...All these stupid religions with their rules

So how do they inform us of our scores? Is it via email or snail mail?

So basically anyone can see anyone's score if they have their email address and birthday? That's what it seems like in the portal to get my scheduling permit...
