NEWARK, N.J.
The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey has begun
construction on the first university housing residence in its 33-year
history.
Ground was broken Monday for the $92.3 million, 14-story building. It
will house 465 students in 234 apartments, many of which will have
views
of downtown Newark and the New York City skyline.
The building is expected to be finished by August 2006. It will have
nine stories of residential units above a five-story parking garage
and
will include a fitness center and several retail establishments.
Several other major projects are under construction on UMDNJ's Newark
campus:
-The UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School-University Hospital Cancer
Institute, a $103 million facility to open in June 2006.
-The Oral Health Pavilion, a $26 million facility housing clinical and
teaching activities of the UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School.
-A $60 million Ambulatory Care Center for UMDNJ-University Hospital
scheduled to open in June 2005.
