Very helpful post, thanks a lot 4ever 👍

And I had a quick off topic question, does anybody know if NJMS has a student gym? or will the student gym be built under the new housing complex they are putting up for next year? Thanks

There is a tiny workout room where students can use one of several running machines and a few other assundry workout devices. It's accross from the gym near the cafeteria. I wandered by it today and glanced inside.

Awesome, thanks guys 🙂

Thanks 4Ever. Any need to buy stethoscopes or other thingamajigs?

I think a new Moore's anatomy (the big one) is supposed to come out this summer so I guess theres a going to be a price drop on the older editions.
Ive read somewhere that you can get a free Netters if you sign up for a credit card but my memory is a little hazy on that.

Yeah the lack of decent fitness center definetly blows. Its a small room with one treadmill, a bench and some assorted dumbells. RWJ has us beat in that regard.

All this info is so helpful! Hurray for SDN and helpful NJMSers!

I was going to ask the stethoscope question also. We're starting shadowing and stuff right away... do we need the stethoscope and/or other stuff?

Got into NJMS but I'm not sure I want to go there over RWJ where im waitlisted. My decisions is almost solely based on location because I know from past threads that both schools are great. New Brunswick seems like a nicer place than Newark with Rutgers campus nearby, with a nice gym, soccer fields, less crime, etc. There are also a lot of apartment complexes nearby.

Stethescopes are a must have item - To save you the trouble of finding out WHICH one to buy (though you can search threads but the answer is the same), you can't go wrong with either of the following choices: Master Cardiology or the Cardiology III

The cardiology III has a peds side which you can take the cap off to reveal the diaphragm. The master cardiology has a feature which allows you to listen to both low pitch and high pitch depending on how firmly you press against the body. My personal preference is the cardiology III (mostly because thats what I have) but I like using some of my friend's master cardiology too

Don't bother getting this ahead of time - the companies will have an hour to talk to you about all their items and to get the rebate, you need to buy THEIR things at the same time. So if you save a little now, it wont matter since you'll get the same price later. Just wait til orientation for these things.

There are plenty of other "required" items that are needed. I have felt no need to use all of them (Hell at times I think the required book isn't really needed either). Most doctors that you will shadow will have all the equipment in the room for you to use and the only piece of equipment that I need is my stethescope - once in a blue moon i take in my otoscope and opthamoscope because its easier to walk around the patient without having that wire hanging off. NOT ALL PRECEPTORS LET YOU DO THE PHYSICAL EXAM or the HPI for that matter - it all depends on who you have.

Advantage of getting someone like this: you get to practice on live patients and go through the whole process

Disadvantage: you seriously CANT do a full history AND physical every time you see a patient so you end up doing the essentials (moreso than what doctors do though). You also dont see as many patients this way - some people who follow get to see more cool things and more patients.

on the OSCE at the end of the year, regardless of if you've had "hands on" experience, you will still need to abide by the checklist and that requires you to practice on your own. The only thing is that when you get to 2nd year, you will most likely have to purchase a kit then anyway.

If you get the panoptic head for the ophthalmscope, all the equipment will run near 1000dollars.

It's really tough to resist the urge to buy these things but trust me, you will save MUCH more money if you just wait it out. On that note, the scrubs can be bought from the Student Council store for 20bucks a set i believe. You will NEED these for anatomy - unless you want your regular clothes to smell after lab

Rent in SH varies - some are known to pay around 550/month + utilities while others pay sometimes upwards of 750+/month

the average is around 650/month ---- more or less depending on your room size and if you have your own bathroom.

My suggestion would be to find one in either Society Hill I or II

To All Entering NJMS Students:

The below article appeared last week outlining the new residence hall
being constructed for students in Newark. The following link is a
rendition of the building:

http://www.umdnj.edu/tssweb/dorms.htm

UMDNJ building first university housing residence
The Associated Press State & Local Wire
October 26, 2004
NEWARK, N.J.

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey has begun
construction on the first university housing residence in its 33-year
history.

Ground was broken Monday for the $92.3 million, 14-story building. It
will house 465 students in 234 apartments, many of which will have
views
of downtown Newark and the New York City skyline.

The building is expected to be finished by August 2006. It will have
nine stories of residential units above a five-story parking garage
and
will include a fitness center and several retail establishments.

Several other major projects are under construction on UMDNJ's Newark
campus:

-The UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School-University Hospital Cancer
Institute, a $103 million facility to open in June 2006.

-The Oral Health Pavilion, a $26 million facility housing clinical and
teaching activities of the UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School.

-A $60 million Ambulatory Care Center for UMDNJ-University Hospital
scheduled to open in June 2005.

this is from NJMS's FAQ site...

Is housing available to students?
Construction has already begun on the newark campus for the very first university housing residence. The 14-story will be completed in the summer of 2006; the building will house 465 students in 234 residential apartments (a mix of studio, one bedroom, two bedroom, and three bedroom models). Views of downtown Newark and the New York City skyline. Included will be a fitness center, laundry facilities, a courtyard, parking and retail stores.

In addition, a great deal of off-campus housing is currently utilized by a significant number of NJMS students. The Office for Student Affairs assists NJMS students by providing valuable resources to address student housing needs. A Housing Day in June has proven to be extremely useful for sharing information about available off-campus housing to accepted students.

Thanks 4Ever. You rock.

4Ever, did you guys get a copy of the NJMS match yet?...i know there was an email sent with a summary, but id be cool to see the actual match results...

thnx

Thanks for your reply drguy, I forgot the details that were in the email, you the man bro 🙂

o, and from what you posted and my own assumptions, I think we will get first picks on the housing over the other UMDNJ schools, right? Or is the housing just for NJMS students? And if so, who do you guys think will be guaranteed housing (MSI, MSII, etc.), even though it seems as if there are more than enough aparments to house the entire NJMS school.

the match list has been posted but from what i know, not online or in any soft copy format... will let you know if i hear

Oh they def do it, its an NJMS tradition...I interviewed maybe a day or two after their first gross anatomy test, and the tours guides took us to the student lounge, and sure enough, the keg was there. The guides said its a tradition, and even professors join in on the festivities....im sure a current NJMS can expound on this more than I, but im pretty sure we'll be doing it this year as well 👍 should be a good time

There was a party thrown by Student Council after the first anatomy exam but that was it. Other than that, students organize their own "extra-curriculars" and occasionally notify the whole class. However, each class is different with regards to their social behaviors.

As for the new housing, from what I've been told (and this is from other students so it my be blatently false) is that it will be open to NJMS students as well as NJDS and Grad students. I don't think housing is "guaranteed" as that doesn't really make much sense, given that many students who live nearby choose to save money and live at home first and second year. Also, they've said nothing about total capacity or projected cost of living in the new building, and while I am notoriously lazy, unless the apartments are cheaper than the rent I'm paying now at SH or significantly nicer than my current apartment, I don't see myself making the move one block closer to school.

I agree with DocOc on this - the new dorm just can't be only for NJMS students. In order for them to fill all apartments, they would need to hit that 464 number (or whatever number it is). That is over 2.5 years of MS classes (if around 170/class). I highly doubt that EVERY individual from the current class along with new incoming classes will jump in to get an apt there. Like it was said, if those apts are significantly higher in price, its not worth moving 1block closer to school (if you're in SH).

Someone has mentioned that to me that if they use the surrounding university pricing for dorms, it might come to about 1100-1400/month. Yeah, thats about double my current living expenses --- it definitely won't appeal to me much. The class of 2010 may have a different take on it since they won't have a previous year's living experience to compare with so they might be more likely to move in.

As for the keggers, once again, Dr. Octopus talked about it - only once have i even remembered seeing the Keg party after an exam. Most people host their own parties at their homes in the area so those are the places to go for partying.

The Admissions Committee isn't something you "run for". You apply to the Student Council to be on it and they interview candidates. Also, there are no first years on the committee, only MSII - MSIV.

Looks like class prez it is DrGuy

By the way, did any of you guys get a letter in the mail saying you have to complete an Online Entrance Interview before your student loan disbursement? Not sure if everyone, or just some students got it...

Going for my physical exam tomorrow!! I cant eat anything for the rest of the night 🙁

thnx for clearing it up...how do they choose student council members? and who chooses them? ALso, when will we find out bout scholarships..?

thnx a lot guys for helpin us newbies out..we really appreciate it.

I sure hope we get financial aid info soon...

Does anyone know when Housing Day is in June exactly? (drguy, you probably know! 🙂 ) I'm just curious.. I'm working out my summer work schedule and most definitely need to take that day off. (coming home for spring break has convinced me that living at home ain't going to work) I need to find a roommate and a place!

Oh, and another thing, I have had to call financial aid a couple times because they didn't have my UMDNJ finaid app... they are the nicest people! Every time I call they're so helpful.

do you still go to housing day if you have already found housing? I know this kind of sounds like a stupid question but are there any benifits for going?

Student Council class reps are selected in the fall and then again (for all the other classes) in the spring. The spring elections are when they choose the E-board (I think) as well as fill any committee spots that are being vacated. Class reps are chosen by vote of the student body.

As for financial aid, I don't recall when I heard, but i think it was probably after the FAFSA due date (May 1) and I think that's because they wait for everyone to submit forms before they calculate. However I honestly don't remember when I got the first letter. Also, the financial aid package they initially offer is just an estimate, and it's usually a round number. Mine was something like $30,000 and that was rather frustrating I remember because I was still waffling back and forth about living at home or somewhere else. After they set the class (and review financial profiles of the students more thouroughly) they send out a revised financial aid package. I recall this number being significantly higher than the initial estimate. Keep in mind, that for those of you considering living on your own, you will need to submit a copy of your lease to Financial Aid as well as possibly having them supply your realtor/leasor a statement of enrollment/ability to pay.

I don't know when they decide the humanism scholarships. My guess would be not until right around or after the May "decision deadline". There are only 10 or so of them, so I wouldn't bet the farm on it. I don't know how they choose them, but I have a suspicion that it's at least partially based on MCAT scores.

If you already found housing and youre 100% set on living there, then don't bother going to the housing session. Just keep in mind they usually have a luncheon after it so if you missed the january one, this one is one to go to (especially if its your birthday around then - free netters)

financial aid is nothing more than an estimate of loans - most of the times theyre more than happy to give you more money to borrow. Just go into the financial aid office and talk to ______ (i forget her name) and she will adjust it and send you the re-adjusted package later. You wont get your money til early to mid august so plan accordingly

if you are wondering what to do for studying until then, i say NOTHING!! i used to say "well read this, read that" but seriously, dont bother - the amount you will learn will be maybe 2 days worth of studying in med school. you will probably forget most things anyways so why bother wasting the fun time you have left?
