I wonder if they're going to put up one of those invisible electric dog fences that shocks ya if you try to escape? 😀

Rumor: They did measurements to show how far apart the things would be if 2 people sitting next to eachother had the things hanging from their necks. This apparently is the distance they must be for it to register, or else they cancel eachother out. I don't know if i believe that, but that's the rumor.

"Is this seat taken?" "Yes, my friend's leash is sitting there." 😉

"...attaches to items that need to be tracked, located and identified."

"Motion activated tags can be programmed to operate at 2 beacon rates: slow when the tag is stationary, and faster when the motion sensor is activated (to provide immediate notification when objects are moving)."

This is how it looks to me from reading thru their website. Each of our beacons sends out a transmission every 10 seconds. If the beacon senses motion, it transmits at a faster rate to indicate we are moving.

The readers can be configured to measure within a certain range so they probably adjusted it so it only reads beacons within or very close to the lecture halls.

If they use enough antennas / readers, (at least 3) then they can triangulate our positions and probably pretty accurately. Until we found out or see what kind / how many antennas they are putting in, we won't know whether they have the capability or not, but I wouldn't doubt it.

It'd be nice if Clare Bryant used her time to get our Cardio/Resp scores, avg's, and passing grade in order...instead of writing us emails about where we aren't allowed to study, and what we aren't allowed to eat on our $40,000/year campus... geez.

But what will be the difference between these and the clickers... If we can leave the clickers with our friends we will be able to leave the trackers also no?

Um Linda sent that e-mail not Claire, but I agree they need to hurry up with our grades....

We have to wear that tracker around our necks or can we leave it in our bags??? Also how sick is it that were in medical school but we need to walk around with a damn gps device on us....

all I know is that as soon as May hits, Im throwing this thing into the lake. Apparently since its water proof let them track the geese.

I'm going to feed mine to the NYCOM racoon.

Im excited that now they will know how many times I go to the bathroom. Obviously, the number of times that I pee is vital information when trying to create a curriculum. I don't know how it was possible to educate their students before this.

I think we should get like 40 people to hang their RIFD's in the toilet stall for 4 hours on Monday. That will really throw them off.

On a related note, my friend in law school thinks we can sue NYCOM. Having them track us with this GPS thing is an invasion of privacy according to him. I think it's just a matter of someone actually deciding to challenge this thing.

They should just hire a hall monitor and pay him a bounty for anyone he catches outside of lecture while on campus and bonus if caught off campus. To matriculate to NYCOM you have sign a waiver that attacking him or hurting him while defending yourself is like defacing school property and grounds for dismissal. Oh and make health insurance $1000 cheaper. 😉

Almost all schools have "tracking" systems, it's just a matter of being subtle about it or not. In your undergrad, did you have to swipe into buildings? Do you realize that everytime you swipe in a building (whether it be at a job, or a school) it sends your identification # to a computer? This is the same thing. It's not a gps. It can only say whether we are in the lecture hall or not. That's not an invasion of privacy, and the school will argue that it's for the safety of the students in the event of a disaster. No judge would argue with that, especially with all the crap that's been happening in this country these days.

Except for the notable exception that this can track me, whereas my student ID card could not, and therefore that could very well be interpreted as an invasion of privacy, particularly given the fact that it is a blatant violation of the contract I signed with this institution (as is everything else happening at NYCOM these days). I was told today that this thingy can track me anywhere on campus... thats teh whole idea behind the excuse w/ the VA tech thing. anyway, how do I know I can trust these people? They can't even build a lecture hall to withstand some rain damage and power outage!

I guess the thing that upsets me the most is that they're using a tragedy as an excuse to force people to come to lecture so that they can look good to guest lecturers and also continue accredidation. If my parents or my fiance or whoever wants to know where I am in the event of a school shooting, I'll pick up my cell phone. But rest assured, NYCOM will triangulate my position and coordinate my student ID with my personal contact information, and get a hold of my emergency contact, all before I can tell them myself that everything is okay. Uggh. Just disgusting. A new low.

Whatever. I'm just counting down the days till we get to kick some ass on rotations. In the meantime, I've told everyone I know to stay away from NYCOM. If Touro gets their act together and gets their rotations set up, why not go there instead? Maybe some good ol' fashioned free market competition will whip NYCOM into shape.

I dont know maybe I will feel the exact same way next year but even with all this crap I still dont find it that bad. There will be ways around the new system and people will be able to do their own thing. Has having a clicker really ruined anyones life that badly?

It can not track you anywhere on campus. Only in the lecture hall. In fact, the original perameter was set up to include the lobby, and they said no, so it was shortened (which is why it has taken longer than expected.) Whoever told you that is wrong. IT IS NOT A GPS. Have you seen them putting up sensors anywhere but the lecture hall? NO! Because they haven't been. People just need to chill out with their conspiracy theories. No wonder they don't take us seriously when we have real complaints, because everyone just whines and complains. If you really cared, you would have showed up at the class meeting and voiced your opinion, and since I was one of the 10 people there attempting to give constructve suggestions, i know that you were not.

Yes, because our suggestions and concerns are always taken into consideration 🙄 Anyway, many DPC kids can't make the class meetings b/c we're doing our rotations then. People would chill out with their conspiracy theories if they actually trusted the administration or felt happy at NYCOM. In fact, how is it NOT a conspiracy when they're saying its for our safety, but then ONLY set up the sensors for the lecture hall?! It's clearly solely for attendance - which is fine, but then don't use a tragedy as some sort of excuse to force kids to go to class. It's the principle. Hence my "whining and complaining".

Sexpistol - first of all, interesting name 😀 - it's not really the changes they've made, but how they've gone about making them, that have upset so many students. Frankly, I don't really care, b/c I'm in DPC so none of this stuff affects me, I just go on doin my thing... some of the OMM lectures are interesting, and if they're not, hey I've got a book with me. But telling me that this little dog collar is supposed to protect me in the event of a disaster.. I mean, c'mon - anyway you dice it, it's wrong.

NYCOM has a history of not taking ANY students concerns or as you want to call it complaints, seriously. Its not just our class but pretty much every class before us felt that the administration had their own agenda. Thats why every other medical school gets tens of thousands of dollars in alumni donations and NYCOM gets close to nothing. The administration believes they know better than anyone and refuse to listen to anyone else. Even some of teh old time faculty feel that they are side stepped in decisions. Now, the TRACKING system only works in lecture but mark my words eventually it will work all over campus. This is absolutely a Bill of Rights infringement on our rights but no one will do anything because we all worked really hard to get to med school (it just turned out that unfortunately it is this one) and no one wants NYCOm to lose accreditation bc it will hurt us all.
By the way as far as this tracking system being used for our protection, last time I checked NYCOM is not big on Al Queda's 100 things to destroy list. Unless Scandalis managed to piss off Bin Laden. The biggest safety issues we face are the constant black outs and floodings that could lead to a fire. But instead of fixing a old and inadequate circuit breaker and a building thats prime location for flooding. I mean common the steps of NYCOM III just tell the water "common flow down right into lecture halls." They create a new system to make sure that WHEN something goes wrong they know we are not there. Also in case there is an emergency there are still going to be people that just left their trackers in lecture halls because Youmans was lecturing again. So that all the 10 students that are in lecture will get out but the trackers of 150 of their friends will still be there. I cant wait to watch Kumar and Scandalis try to get out 150 bags to their safety.

The associate dean of academic affairs told us this. If he is incorrect, it only further typifies how NYCOM keeps its very own administration in the dark about everything!

I dont really care that much about the trackers. I think its stupid, but really, how much does it change my life? Not much. What I do care about is that they are spending money on this. I dont know what it cost to implement this system, but given their track record I assume way too much. I just think it would have been better spent on a drainage system or bribing hospitals to get better rotations. They put an automatic door in one building, which broke on more than one occasion. Its the wasting of money that bothers me. I would rather they not spend the money and stop raising tuition or subsidize my health insurance.

I hear ya man.

But you know what... whatever... it doesn't matter anymore. In reflecting on all of this, I think the best thing we can do is learn something so that we can better the lives of our patients... and even the countless stupid things NYCOM does.. we can learn from them too, in a different way. Sometimes I get so frustrated that I let these things interfere with my studying - but in the end, thats to some future pt's detriment. I have to keep that larger perspective in mind, and I lose it sometimes b/c NYCOM is so damned frustrating. Even if it's something we disagree with wholeheartedly both in principle and in practice... we gotta let it roll off our back.
Thats my (calmer) take on it, anyway.

In 20 years we will be in charge of NYCOM, and hopefully whoever those people are from our class will remember everything that we don't like about the current policies. For now, let's all be sure to write all of our frustrations in the course evaluations. Sure, those who don't care how we feel will continue to not care, but maybe there'll be someone reading them who can make a difference but hasn't because we've been directing our frustrations to the wrong people.

Well naturally, mandatory attendance via this tracking system will raise our board scores more than putting the money towards paying for USMLEworld or QBank for us, right? 🙄

Safety???? Is the faculty and staff getting trackers, because they need to be safe as well...

If it was a security issue, wouldn't this be a campus wide scenario applied to all NYIT students?

Here's a security issue.... where the heck are our grades?!? Ok, that's not a security issue, but still... I want it. I don't feel ok until I see the official grade

I'm right there with ya. It's been a week...

My college had no such swiping into lecture hall thing. The only thing we needed to swipe into were our dorms and that was for actual security reasons as to make sure that the only people in the dorms were students.

My college could care less if you went to class. Their feeling was that the professors were excellent teachers and that if you missed lecture YOU were missing out.

If this is their solution to too many kids streaming, I'd honestly rather let them do away with streaming since the only thing I ever stream are OMM videos. Why would I want to stream a terrible lecture anyway? If someone's a bad lecturer, there is no point in either attending their lecture or streaming their lecture...but threatening to fail us for not being in 80% of the lectures is just absurd in my opinion.

I was driving on the back road this morning and I realized that the construction by the de seversky center isnt just any construction. It is a military compound where scandalis (aka dr. evil) and his minions (claire bryant aka #2) plan to hold up in the event of a student uprising. Im afraid it is too late to do anyting. They have fortified their positions with motion sensor machine guns. And I believe there will be a moat protected with sharks that have frickin' lasers on their heads. Not to mention the crocodiles that have been set on fire.

Grades are up. Finally, peace of mind for Thanksgiving.

has anyone actually failed for not meeting 80% attendance?

hey guys
how many people apply for anatomy fellowships per year?

Don't know the actual number that apply, but currently there are about a handful of applicants who are competitive for it. Remember that they will usually go with students, with whom they are acquainted. If you're seriously considering an anatomy fellowship, now is the time to start talking to anatomy faculty and getting involved - offer to help with stuff in the lab, start asking about possible summer research projects, etc. If you want the fellowship, consider doing summer research in the anatomy dept.

I dare you to wear a Touro sweatshirt to school. No, I double dog dare you.

I think they said something about doing it January or February during orientation but I'm not exactly sure.

Does anyone know what all the regional hospitals are?

Also, anyone have anything older than last year's endocrine exam?

hey guys,

I am a third year and wanted to chime in w/ my two cents.

1) DO NOT APPLY TO A REGIONAL. None of the NYCOM affliates that offer regionals are good enough that you should want to do a residency there so try to diversify your experience next year.

Maimonides is perhaps the only exceptions. Lutheran is not even worth it.

2) AVOID WYCKOFF HOSPITAL like the plague. The place is a cancer and will kill. Listen to my words of wisdom. Better to go upstate or Pennsylavania. Avoid Wyckoff.

I am doing this wishing that someone had given me some advice from years ahead. And since those in charge at NYCOM really have no idea what they are talking about, we have to rely on each other.

Peace out,

Phall

I was really considering doing a regional at Lutheran...up until I that the above comment. thanks for the heads up

The only problem with not doing a regional is how do we guarantee we're not sent upstate? Some of us have families and can't be shipped up state or to buffalo for 12 weeks.

So who thinks we'll get our final Cardio and Resp grades AFTER our Endocrine I grades?:bullcrap:

The only problem with not doing a regional is how do we guarantee we're not sent upstate? Some of us have families and can't be shipped up state or to buffalo for 12 weeks.

you have to rank all of the rotations offered so you can definitely put the undesirable locations at the bottom of the list. theres still a small chance you may get shipped to buffalo, but if you have a compelling family reason im pretty sure they will be sympathetic and switch you out. a friend of mine got switched out of a buffalo rotation because he had to care for his son. saying you'll miss your girlfriend might not cut it.

although i must say, a couple of friends did rotations in buffalo and loved it, one of them delivered 20 babies by herself. thats rare on any rotation.

i havent heard any bad things about the lutheran regional in general. i know their surgery rotation is pretty brutal, ob is a joke, and psych is easy. not sure about medicine or FP. and they dont let us do peds there from what i remember.
and doing a regional isnt all about showing yourself off for residency. thats what 4th year is for. 3rd year is about learning. i've heard pretty decent things about almost all of the regional programs. everyone wants to go to NJ or maimo or good sam. of course, no hospital is going to be great in every specialty. and rotations can even vary from month to month when there are different residents and attendings on the service. that is the chance you take.

i didnt do a regional and was able to be within a 45 minute drive of any hospital i went to. and for me personally it was good to see the dynamic at the different hospitals - the large academic center, the small community hospital, the hospital in an underserved neighborhood.

but i do agree to stay away from wyckoff 👎

How hard is it to get St. Barnabas or Maimo for a regional? I really want to get Maimo.

Also for the USMLE when you register do you have to get the school to sign and allow you to take it?

Did Dr. Youman's ever post the answers to his practice questions? He has yet to respond to an email sent to him yesterday. 😕
