Not sure about multiple practicals but in the minutes posted on webboard we were told that all future anatomy labs will be prosections and demonstrations.

i like the 1 retake policy/ year idea. Dr. Scandalis mentioned that allowing retakes let NYCOM stop acting like police on who's excuse for missing exams were legit. Now they will have to go back to that. I spoke to some former NYCOM grads that mentioned they had to retake a couple exams so I have no idea what he meant that this retake policy we have is a new thing.

Can someone message me instructions on how to access the webboard. I've been having trouble. \

6 more days of hell then 2 months exam free 😎

Anyone know when they're going to post the new syllabus for the next thread up?? I want to make travel plans and it would be really helpful to know when we have class and lab!

About the Webboard. Im still having trouble logging in using my email prefix and secret #. It keeps saying not accepting new users. Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it.

Wrong logon info.

I had to e-mail for my secret number. It's different than the one I use to access ICC and on the exams.

Also, I managed to get onto hem/immunological on Noodle last week but it's now been deleted. It looks like we're doing thoracic cavity anatomy. I'd like to see how that works. On the calendars it doesn't show any anatomy labs. I wonder if it's going to be run like the neuro labs. I wouldn't mind that if it's a come at your own convenience to see prosections type of thing. That would at least free our schedules a bit.

Hey does anyone know what Dr. Fischer said was going to be on the test?? The end of the video just stops without going into it. Thanks

Dear NYCOM people 🙂 🙂 🙂 Is it possible to work part time? Or on weekends?

Dear NYCOM people 🙂 🙂 🙂 Is it possible to work part time? Or on weekends?
I know some second years that pull off a part time job. I would say wait a few months until you're in the groove; by then you should know whether you have extra free time to work or not. With the workload we have, it would be difficult, but some people manage it. Me, personally, there's no way I could handle a job right now. I study every day, including weekends, with an occasional sunday off. This is how it is for most of my first year friends as well. It's hard to describe the amount of work you have to do while here. The closest thing I could think of for explaining it to an undergrad would be something along the lines of, imagine you have an MCAT test every month, and each month it's completely new material. And the amount of information on each test is actually more than what was on the MCAT. Imagine having to prepare for that every month, and that's kinda what's it's like.

Plasticman, you're going to go about scaring everyone.

Honestly, the workload is not that bad I don't think if you learn to manage it. To be honest, I think my undergrad classes were harder to a degree but that may have been the particular school I went to. A lot of my friends at other medical schools across the country agree with me on that. One of the big differences was in undergrad, in a class of 50 kids the profs would maybe only give out a few A's and a few A-s and if you did worse than that well it was doing bad. So you drive yourself crazy trying to ace everything. Here, it's more important to just pass. You'll learn what you need to learn well and what you don't need to learn as well. If you're looking to honor every test then you do have to study like crazy but if you want to just do well and prepare for the boards at the same time it's really not too bad as long as you don't fall behind.

I mean, I guess it depends on the student. If you don't forget what you learn than it's really not bad because you don't have to review that much. Make sure you understand everything and you'll never forget it. If you just try to memorize everything it can be really tough. Like when you're trying to learn anatomy, instead of just trying to memorize names of things, when you learn structures think about why those structures are there or if you're thinking about certain area of the body, think about what needs to be there for it to work.

On the other hand, I'm not sure there would ever really be time for a part time job if you want to enjoy life. I mean, I definitely feel like I have the time to work 15-20 hours a week but I'd much rather spend that time with my family and relax. I feel like if all you do is work and study you're going to go crazy and be miserable in medical school. Enjoy it. The best part of medical school is being a student. You'll have plenty of years to work. Suck up the loans because an extra 5-10,000 dollars is not going to make that much of a difference in the long run.

On another note, the Heme/Immun system is back on Noodle. It seems that we are going to have 4 anatomy dissections (which the 2nd years already did). I'm not sure how they're going to handle this. Honestly, I'm not that disappointed if we have prosections out for us since I learn the anatomy better through Yokochi than through the lab anyway. In addition to that, I'd much rather get through anatomy this year while we have retakes than next year without. I feel like if you prepare for your written exams you should pass but no matter how prepared you are for anatomy if you get a little flustered the next thing you know time is up and you're freaking out. I feel like it's a lot easier to mess up the anatomy than a written test assuming you prepare for it and I'm glad it seems that we'll have the retake option for all of our anatomy practicals.

ROHEN is the first author. Please, give the man some respect. 😉
Taty, a couple of the DPC ppl work - one girl babysits, another works at the library. I think there are some other people that work at the gym or something?? If you really wanna, I guess you could, but like green said, you gotta figure out how much it means to you.

Wow, tough school. I went to an engineering/science school for my undergrad and these classes are way harder. The amount of material given to us here is MUCH more than undergrad. As far as scaring people, I was just posting my personal experience. Perhaps I'm not as intelligent as you are. I see all my friends at school studying as much as I do, and none of us has honored so far, so it doesn't seem to be just me. I would say the majority of the class studies ALOT but only a FEW (10%) will honor.

👍 👍
I study more than I've ever studied and this is absolutly the most difficult task i've ever attempted in my life. Yeah, maybe it depends on the student but I have never heard of anyone who has said that its not that bad and many of my friends (not me) honor every exam and a few score in the 95+ range and even they agree.

I don't mean to imply that medical school is easy by any means. I think I just expected it to be a lot worse. I guess personal opinion factors into what people think is "not too bad". I guess it depends on how you study and what not. In college I often found myself studying through the middle of the night. Pulling all-nighters writing papers and doing problem sets for 24 straight hours at a time. I feel like if you manage your time properly in medical school you don't really have to stay up through the night studying. I know that by rotations and residency that will change but it will change because you'll be forced to be there. Medical school is not easy but it's definitely manageable and I think NYCOM makes it a little easy on us because the lecturers tend to spoonfeed the material you're tested on through their powerpoints. What makes it difficult is that you need to read material and review books in addition to the powerpoints to study for your boards but if you focused your time memorizing and learning the professor's powerpoints than it really shouldn't be THAT bad. I mean, I rarely take a day off but I find that I also don't have days where I'm studying 12 hours a day or more that often aside from the week before a test.

By the way, what did you guys think of the anatomy mock practical? I wasn't expecting as much osteology which I'm actually kind of happy about since I think it's easier to remember that stuff and to see the stuff than deal with our cadavers that are in atrocious condition right now. I'm really starting to wonder how in the world we're going to finish up with our cadavers this year.

well, i heard its gonna be prosection and demo for anatomy....so anybody know how they gonna set this up for our next system??

Looks like it's time for the class of 2010 thread to die just like my class of 2009 thread has died. Oh well. Then we all die as well. I don't like Dr. Scandalis' new policies. What is wrong with bringing NYCOM into the 21st century by streaming everything? Why can't I stay home and study my own way and listen to the streaming when I need more info. This is the way of the future. If I make T-shirts saying "don't stop the streaming at NYCOM" who here would wear one :meanie: ? These policies won't really affect us second yrs so I am feeling lucky.

Hey I am just looking for a little advice about NYCOM. What are things you guys like and hate about it. The tuition is now 43 k a year plus living and probably rising. Is it worth all that money. I have the option of going to LECOM and have a Touro, MI interview coming up. Any info would be helpful. For instance what is the comlex 1st time pass rates there.......I heard they were just average....why is this?

I went on 3 interviews for med school and each school stated tuition raises about 5% each year. I'm not sure if this is normal procedure but you should ask at any school you are considering.

Things I like about NYCOM:
1)streamed videos
2)LOTS of opportunity for summer research and also some research available during the year.
3)academic fellows if that is your thing
4)NYCOM grads match well into specialties
5)simulated patient encounters - gets you prepared for 3rd year.
6)3rd year clerkships
7)Great anatomy and pathology department
8)It's in NYC baby!!!!!!!
9)NYCOM is actively expanding research opportunites, academic fellowships, clerkship sites, etc. every year. They also are working on a project to get NYCOM its very own teaching hospital which means more clerkships, clinical research, and residencies. I'm very excited to see what NYCOM will grow into by the time I graduate.
10)technology - NYCOM loves technology. streamed video. STAN and baby STAN
http://www.meti.com/Product_HPS.html

Cons:
1)cost
2)possible changes to streamed videos, attendance and exam schedule
3)NYCOM is in the suburbs.

Dr. Scandalis told us that at the end of this year, streaming will stop.

He said it would be changed, not stopped completely.

Also, was the written review seriously only 12 minutes?

As far as the Pros of NYCOM HunterGather just about hit them all on the head. NYCOM is I believe one of the best osteopathic schools you can go to for 3rd and 4th year clinicals due to its close proximity to NYC. You basically get all the clinical experience a Cornell or NYU student would which is great for when it comes time for applying for residency. As far as the only average COMLEX scores im not too sure of but you can basically put in what you put out. What i mean is NYCOM gives us all the material we need, its basically up to the student to do what you want with it and add on any extra info from review books. As well I believe this years class 2009 will be the 1st to take the COMLEX with the new systems style curriculum and I think they might even be changing the curriculum again for 2011.
The biggest CON is definately the price. When you are talking about $40K + a year plus living expenses it makes u wanna cry, but then again every DO and private MD school is gonna be about the same. I interviewed and lived near LECOM and it definately wasn't worth the few extra savings from cheap living to go there. Plus their rediculous attendence and dress policy made me think of it as more of a 4 yr prison sentence than a school. As far as TOURO goes im not sure. I would think living in Ca would be just as expensive as here but without the good clinical experience. Well anyways sorry about the long response. Good luck!

Sent you guys a PM (emlopez2 and huntergatherer)

One of the cadaver's legs fell off the table and kicked me in the ass on the way out of the practical....happen to anyone else??👎

Hey could any current NYCOM students send me there typical schedule of classes during the week?

LOL:laugh:

"And stay out!"

Dr. Scandalis told us that at the end of this year, streaming will stop.
I doubt they would eliminate streaming completely; they've invested alot of money into the technology and it's a huge help for studying. Can anyone else confirm him saying it will stop?

our class had a meeting with Dr Scandalis. He said it will definitely change but he did not say anything about completely ending it.

Hey I was wondering if you guys know how much time that NYCOM gives you to study before the boards? Also do they bring in a groups like Kaplan for example to help you out?

Did u guys see Dr. Moise is leaving NYCOM. That's three physicians in 2 weeks to announce they're leaving! 😱 Abandoning ship?!

I bet they were streamers who all relied on the retests to get through.

hi guys!
does anyone know why they havent posted dr. simons lectures from monday morning on the movies website? was it not streamed?
thanks 🙂

The power failed briefly in the middle of Dr. Simon's lecture, that may have had something to do with it.

Dr simon's lecture is on the NYCOM Movies website right now. there is a note that a small part at the end is missing due to a power surge. I did not see it on noodle yet. NYCOM main page->student->resources->movies

they did not take away our streaming yet. 😀

Just curious if this happened to anyone else: I took two hours this afternoon to fill out the course and faculty evaluations for neuro and then when I clicked submit or evaulate or whatever it was I got a connect timed out message and it looks like everything I wrote was lost!! Yeah, its the perfect ending to a disaster of a course!! I reloaded the page and clicked on profs that I submitted and didn't get a timed out message and they weren't there either. I was confused because the email said that we can go back and edit but nothing appeard to be there. I emailed the guy who does the evals and he told me to talk to Kumar. I really hope my stuff wasn't deleted...

When doing your evals, you may want to write them in word and the copy and past onto the site.

ouch... that's suck.

By the way, can the students see the eval for all professors?

No you can't see what other students wrote, atleast I don't think so.

Man is anyone else as confused about pharmacology as I am, I don't understand why it was the second lecture given looking at the lecture I was just like huh?

Yeah, I didn't understand why that was the second lecture in our course. But then again it gives us more time allowed for memorizing all the drugs

It feels that Goldstein's questions will be harder than Hutak's

Anyone else having problem accessing streaming? Looks like it's turned off! 😱
