Yea, apparently our ICC Neuro Practical Exam wasn't enough for us so we need to do an encounter as well where we're probably going to have to just repeat all the maneuvers we did before.

Some aspects of NYCOM are really damn annoying. I also wrote an amazing evaluation for Friedman, I hope it goes through.

The woman needs to be fired. I think we should be reimbursed a percentage of our tuition for what she's lectured us to about. I knew yesterday's lecture by her was going to be a disaster when she started off with "Well, I'm not an expert on this topic..."

I mean, if she's a so called expert in Neuroscience and doesn't know what the hell she's talking about, how can she even be allowed to lecture to us about Histology of the immune system. The woman is a disaster. She has her PhD in scientology, not science. Someone at the Human Resources department in NYCOM messed up when they hired her.

With that said, is anyone else excited by the fact that the bulk of this next section is taught by Dr Simon and Dr. Elkowitz? They truly make going to class worthwhile. NYCOM should double Elkowitz' salary (I heard a rumor that Dr. Simon does this pro bono, anyone know if it's true?) and have Elkowitz train all the other lecturers at NYCOM. He's really a brilliant lecturer and while there are times during his lectures where I have no idea where he's going with the material, everytime I leave class I feel like an expert in whatever his topic was on.

I also like that Elkowitz said he is going to try very hard to make all the exam questions board style.

As for Friedman, she may not be the best lecturer, but I have heard the research she does at NYCOM has brought in several million dollars to NYCOM.
 
Yea, her scientology research is amazing. She's one of the best scientology researchers around...

Seriously, she's a joke. I don't care how much money she's brought to NYCOM she's obviously only qualified in a very very small field. If she's going to be a professor she needs to be able to teach and she needs to be capable of teaching a breadth of material which she absolutely can not do. I highly doubt she's irreplaceable to the neuroscience research department. They really should look into replacing her.

Elkowitz is the man. He really makes coming to lectures worthwhile. 2 hours of an Elkowitz lecture feel like 20 minutes.

By the way, the practical scores are out...thank god for OMM...

No Joke! I'm starting to feel some love for OMM now!! 😍 Anatomy and me are not getting along too well this year.

Anyone see the video "hematology gone wild"? :laugh:

I have no problems going to lecture for Fischer, Leheste, Hill, Elkowitz, and Simon. There are other good lecturers but i like these guys a lot. Simon and Elkowitz really break away from the pack though. If either of those guys leave I want my money back! :meanie:

with Freidman you have to look to outside sources like her infamous D1 D2 pathway which was not on the exam but presented to us 3 times (2 lectures and review session). lol! I think she has potential to be a good lecturer if she condenses her notes and gets some confidence. She does seem excited to teach.

LOL i COMPLETELY agree...i dont care how much money friedman is making for nycom, she just shouldnt be teaching us (and by teaching, i mean reading from her slides and intermittedly making mistakes on material that she is supposedly and "expert" on) ..they should take all that money she's making and get us a new professor...it's not like its impossible to get her questions correct on the test, its just that we deserve better from our 8 million dollar a year tuition
 
Does anyone else who did much better in OMM than anatomy almost feel a little guilty about it? haha.

What bothers me about the anatomy practicals is the whole 1 minute per body thing. It really throws me off sometimes. I feel like 50% of the things I get wrong I could get right if I could manipulate the body and/or spend a little more time looking at the cadavers. I almost wish they gave us photos and multiple choice questions.

Does anyone know how anatomy is on the boards? I didn't think that there was much head and neck anatomy on the boards (at least not unless it directly related to a clinical question). My understanding is the main basic anatomy you need to know is limb anatomy and the rest just kind of falls into place.

Anyone down for starting a NYCOM strike...the next time Friedman lectures NO ONE goes. That would be awesome. It would be even better if she lectures after someone like Elkowitz where it's crowded and she sees the entire class leave.
 
I don't think for the boards u actually have to recognize what muscle/nerve/artery or whatever from a picture but rather its going to be like clinical questions. Someone comes in with a wrist drop and what causes it kinda thing. They may have CTs, X-rays and radiographs. And I know in neuroanatomy they use the slices and are like if this area is knocked out what happens kinda like how Hallas presented the clinical cases.

Man I was looking over some of the stuff in First Aid for the Musculoskeletal and I couldn't even remeber half the stuff, I can just imagine next year.
 
Is streaming locked during class time b/c it won't let me in, anyone else having that problem?
 
Well I know it is a stupid question to ask, but...is anybody here turned down out of state MD schools for going to NYCOM and has no regrets?

I want to stay in-state. Plus, I got a good vibe from NYCOM and I think I will be happy there. I really don't care if I am DO or MD...Well I guess a question is if you had a choice would you attend NYCOM again?
 
If you do not care either way I think you should go MD. Otherwise you may become one of the students frustated with learning OMM. It's possible you may like OMM. DOs have come a long way but there are still residencies that will take an MD over a DO all things being equal or just won't interview a DO.

It's easy to say you don't care until you fall in love with some specialty that only matches 3 DOs each year.

I think happiness is important to consider when applying to medical school, because its hard mentally and emotionally. I know just the other day I was thinking thank god I'm so close to home. I don't think you really have to worry about OMM I just study the week before the test and its fine. One thing though if ur planning on specializing in something that is mainly and MD field and the AOA doesn't really have any programs then you may want to be an MD so you can just worry about taking the USMLE and not the COMLEX too...

I am not worried about OMM, I think that it is very interesting thing to learn. I want to go to general surgery for the residency ( good community program), but recently I discovered that there are so many DOs in the surgery fields that I dont worry about it. USMLE and COMLEX ... well one test more one test less ehhh...I really like NYCOM. Looks like a nice place to me, plus family is nearby 🙂 Its just feels very weird to decline acceptance and interviews...strange feeling...

I am interested in trauma or transplant surgery ( not decided on that one). I will have to match in general surgery and do trauma or transplant fellowship.
OMM looks like interesting thing to me so I dont think that I will go nuts with it. I just feel good at NYCOM...feels like home really...🙂 🙂

For surgery, go MD. It will make the trip easier.

I calculated expences, plus happyness,location and family factors...decided on NYCOM...I will go extra mile if I'll be happy...I did not feel that way in that MD school when I came for an interview.

Sent withdrawal e-mail now...going to NYCOM...because I will be much happier at NYCOM than in any other place where I have been...

Do you guys use Guyton physiology book?

Well then, welcome to the NYCOM family. 🙂

Honestly, I haven't used any physio books yet as the handouts are very detailed from Dr. Stepp. The books I use all the time are:

1st Aid
Step-up to the USMLE
Robbins Path
Robbins Path Review (filled with board style questions)
Yukochi's
Grant's Dissector
Moore & Daley Clinical Anatomy.
Thieme illustrated atlases are pretty good.
Savarese's OMT book.
Lippencott's biochem review.

Congrats on your decision. I'm sure you will think about it from time to time but you will do well as a NYCOM grad. We matched 7 students in Gen Surg, 2 otrtho, 2 oto-facial plastic surgery (no clue what that is but maybe plasticman knows), 1 prelim neuro surgery, and 3 prelim surgery last year. I don't know anything about surgery specialties so I'm not the person to comment on the matches.

When Surgeons come to the school to lecture take the time to introduce yourself and see if you can visit the program over the summer. We have a lot of program directors giving lectures and inviting students to visit their program.

I also recommend reading the Surgery forum or any other residency you have interests.

otaryngology / facial plastics is plastic surgery of the face. It differs from a plastic and reconstructive surgeon in that their scope of surgery is neck and above, whereas a plastic and reconstructive surgeon is trained to perform procedures on the entire body.
 
If you think there's a mistake in your OMM grade make sure you go to check your score sheet!! I was shocked when i got my OMM grade (75) because I normally do really well in it so I went to check and they had my name on my partner's part II!! So I really got a 95!! Dr. Ahn and the fellow that graded me had to come in and I had to argue with them a little bit but the fellow finally remembered how we did (mainly because of the big difference in our scores) so they gave me my correct grade!
 
You talkin about Histology: An interactive virtual microscope? cuz i've got that one.. no Histology Time, except for the histology that was included in the neuro video we got
 
Hey does anyone know where to find NYCOMs match list for previous years? I Went on iris but cant seem to find it, if it is even posted anywhere.
 
Dr. McWhinney....Wow. I must offer her my congratulations. She's threatening to challenge Friedman for the title of WLE (Worst Lecturer EVER).

If you didn't come to class today, don't bother streaming her lecture. It was a total waste of time. What's sad is her powerpoint is completely helpless as well. Good news though. Dr. Dixon did the same lecture last year and her powerpoints and pdfs are excellent as usual. I'm not going to bother streaming her lecture since she usually reads mostly off her material, but she has some excellent material.

Don't bother streaming McWhinney. Seriously a total waste of time.

Don't read a single thing. Go drink, party, get laid, watch tv. You won't have time to do any of that once school starts. I know you're a pre-med and you think anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry are the most interesting things in the world. You won't remember jack a week after a med school test, you certainly won't remember anything useful from the summer. When you're bored and have nothing to do, watch tv. All this crap won't be interesting anymore once you get a few months in.
 
Just relax before school starts, because your life will change big time once classes start and you don't want to get burnt out.

Go over to the Step 1/Comlex 1 forum and read how people are preparing for the boards and what books you are using. I like to follow along in review books as I do my readings for each course.

Get eMule or another file sharing program if you are into that and start downloading. i have Rohen, First Aid, etc. on my computer and on hardcopy. When you are in lecture and don't have one of your books with you it's nice to able to have it handy on your laptop.

Read up in the residency forum also. Match day was today so now would be a good time to see what people do to match into their field. You will probably run into many cautionary tales as well.

If you are dying to do some reading get Iserson's Getting Into a Residency: A Guide for Medical Students, 7th Edition or a similar book. Just borrow it from the library. I don't think it is worth $30+

So what's everyone doing for Spring Break in 2 weeks besides studying?? I'm hoping for one of the last minutes expedia.com travel deals to someplace warm and sunny for a few days.

We only have 3 pharm lectures I think, but then again we have like 300 drugs to remember :laugh: 😱

I thought she was really good when she had Hutak's notes in Neuro...What happened!!!!!
 
Hutak's still around I believe. I think she focuses on DPC now. She had a lot of complaints. To be honest, I liked Hutak at times. She wasn't a great lecturer but was very straightforward at least and we didn't have to deal with a lot of mechanisms.

To be honest, I haven't really looked at any of the pharm stuff yet. I saw it's a lot and didnt go to any of her lectures. I'll try to learn that stuff over April break when I have some other immunological and hematological background. I think it makes it hard to learn drugs when you really don't know what they're actually doing.

Goldstein is a real drab to listen to and she speaks wayyy too fast. I'm not a big fan of her but she's not that bad. It could get worse, I mean, they could call on Dr. Friedman to give us some pharm lectures.

Thankfully we have spring break coming up to pause and refresh some of these notes. After this next exam we only have a month left of school and it's dermatology. Does anyone know if it was supposed to have been difficult last year?

nvshelat: I'm also curious about our fourth year's match list.

And in terms of making a decision of whether to come to NYCOM vs. any other school, or make the decision of DO vs. MD: Educate yourself as much as possible, talk to students, ask questions and know what to expect, and you'll make the right choice for you! You're on the right track by looking at this site.
 
OK...I filled out my FAFSA my expected family contribution is way too big. How do you guys take out living expenses loan? Are you living off refund money ( I mean paying rent and stuff if u dont work...)?

I am confused about all financial aid thing...very confused....please help...
 
U should call the fin. aid office and talk to them. I don't know if ur working or not but I wasn't and was told not to put my family information on the Fafsa and file as an independent. For living expenses I took out a private loan, I think last yr the applications became available close to summer. I took out 23000 for living expenses and its way more than I need I'm debating whether to send back the excess or just hold it for next yr and not take out another one.

I know the last thread for 2010 had alot of Aid information in it.

I did not show my family information on FAFSA, I think the thing is that I am working and have a pretty good salary, but once I'll start school I'll stop...well I am going to call to fin aid office and schedule an appointment...
