The fact that we're getting a new dean makes me hate Scandalis even more. He knows he's not going to be in charge, yet he's making lots of major decisions that will affect NYCOM in the near future.

Shouldn't he leave the streaming question and retake question up to a new dean? I mean, what if a new dean comes in and decides to allow retakes? Any chance that can happen?

I wish they'd bring Dr. Schiowitz back.

Just that we're getting a new dean...there are full paged ads in two of those DO magazines that we get in the mail for the job.

Thanks. I just looked at the ad. Is he stepping down and taking another role at NYCOM or did someone give him an offer he couldn't refuse?

The new dean could change things back but as i understand it Dr Scandalis has a committee helping make decisions and I don't think that committee will disappear with him. I'm not sure if the Dean can make the decision without counsel.

In this thread someone made an abandon ship comment that I initially did not like. for better or worse it is definitely starting to look that way.

Is he stepping down and taking another role at NYCOM or did someone give him an offer he couldn't refuse?

Dr Scandalis is actually the interrim dean (I spelt that wrong). I think it was probably more like Dr Ross-Lee got an offer she couldn't refuse last year (VP of Health Sciences for NYIT) and took it and left the job open so Scandalis took the NYCOM dean job until they could find a permanent replacement, that's just my theory though!

He was never made official dean. He is going to step back down into the assistant dean's role when someone else is hired. He was always just the interim dean.

Abandon ship? Is NYCOM supposedly in trouble?

My sister knew NYCOM was looking for a dean b4 I did, its been in the JAOA (I think) for a while. I think people just forget Scandalis isn't the real dean.

I don't think it has anything to do with abandoning ship its just that Dr. Ross-Lee made a career move, and some of the other doctors are making career moves. I don't think people should start reading into the situation, its like any other school faculty change. Also the doctors that are leaving were offered pretty good positions.

Just to ease everyone's mind, as far as I know, there is no one "jumping ship." One doctor got an offer he couldn't refuse at one of the new osteopathic schools, another one got an offer somewhere else, and Dr. Scandalis was always just an interim dean - never intended to be permanent from my understanding. Apparently the good faculty at these schools get offers from all over and it's only a matter of time until they get an offer they can't refuse.

Haha, that was probably me. Yeah, that's just how it looked to me with all the people announcing in rapid successcion (sp?) that they were leaving. It was like damn, they can't get out fast enough! LOL. I don't see why this is the case though; it's probably just a coincidence. It seems like they all got really good offers. Chaudry is going to be in charge of 1500 staff. Moise knows there's major cash to be made in GI. Tietelbaum got offered an associate Dean position (if only he would have been made Dean of NYCOM 🙁) And now supposedly, the ex-con is leaving. Did I just say that? Oh no he didn't... 😱 :meanie:

Dr. Moise --> GI fellowship
Dr. Chaudry --> Politics
Dr. Tietelbaum --> DO school in TN.

The whole thing seems a bit scandalous to me.

Yeah who is the ex-con??

I also heard today that Dr. Williams is leaving and Dr. Torres is going to Touro in Harlem...I don't know how true those are though.

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!! and yeah whose an ex-con?

Williams is going to Touro Harlem. I'm happy for her, though sad to see her leave. Shes done a lot for DPC and she'll be missed. But it will be better for her and her family, and she gets to build something from the ground up. The flourish of diploma-mills certainly is thinning out the pool of competent educators though..🙁

Without mentioning any names, has anyone else found that this new immunology professor's lecture is absolutely 100% worthless? I just wasted two and a half hours listening to her put powerpoints up and saying "it's explained clearly in the handout" and then wasting more time while she stood up there looking up the pages in the handout where we can find it, instead of actually explaining it herself. I wish she would've explained more instead of talking about the 100s of research studies that her and her friends conducted that mean nothing to me since I don't understand the basics of immuno yet, which is what she's supposed to be teaching us. Geez, I never thought I'd say this but I wish I could go back to neuro. At least the professors/doctors knew what they were talking about and could explain it clearly (with a few exceptions) instead of just reading densely packed powerpoint slides to us or telling us "you can read about this in the handout." This whole heme/immuno unit has had some of the worst lecturers I've seen in my whole life and we're not even halfway done with it yet.

I AGREE! I am so sick of hearing "i'm not going to go over this...read it in parham, read it in harrisons, read it in robbins, its all in the reading..." and this comes just WEEKS after scandalis gave us the "you have to come to lecture" speech. I realize we have to read, but the lectures should explain the readings!

not to mention, the lecture packets (for certain professors) are each close to an inch thick, and we still have to "read it in the text"... then whats the point of a packet the size a f*cking encyclopedia?!

ill do my job and read robbins. the professors should do their job and prepare packets that summarize the readings, then teach it.. sorry, im a little heated.

Tuesday's immunology lecture honestly was ok. Dr. Simon is an amazing lecturer and I think it's tough and unfair to compare anyone to him. Parham is a pretty readable text and I think she went over the major points in class. I was disappointed with the other lectures this week, not the immuni. The transfusion lecturer just read straight from her slides and put me to sleep. The stem cell transplant lecturer was on and off interesting but she rambled and it was difficult to understand what the more salient points were.

Go back to neuro!!! You mean you want more Friedman? You've gotta be crazy, haha. Neuro was also hit or miss. I think heme has been much better because Elkowitz and Simon give the bulk of the lecturers and they are the 2 best lecturers we've had so far. I also think Sal Docimo is head and shoulders better than the neuro fellows. He really gave an Elkowitz style lecture. I'd actually like to have him teach us some more stuff.

I think this course is organized better than neuro with the exception of pharm. Everything sort of seems to be building on each other and it's making stuff much easier to learn than neuro when a lot of the stuff was just piece mailed together.

I don't know I liked Neuro better, but that could be b/c I found it alot more interesting. I think Sal is really smart and he knows alot but I wouldn't say his lecture were like Dr. Elkowitz, b/c I was definitely struggling to stay awake and connect the points. The best fellow I think would be Yusaf, you actually learned with that boy.

I am getting scared about so many people leaving.....

I am getting scared about so many people leaving.....

Don't be. It has nothing to do with the quality of the school, people are just jokin around, and others are just whining. It seems as though there are a lot of whiners at NYCOM. Cry me a freakin river...

Yea, people are leaving because they got better offers. It would scare me if people were leaving for lesser positions. To be honest, I think it's a good sign that some of the people are leaving. The fact that these people worked at NYCOM will make NYCOM look better. Anyone hear anything about our match list yet?

100% AGREE
TOTAL WASTE OF TIME
i have to say, the neuro professors (obviously excluding friedman) were way better..
does anyone else not really get the big deal abt elkowitz and simon??
i just dont think theyre great AT ALL.
simon is a nice guy but elkowitz needs to get a grip, he thinks he's way too important.

You definitely learn a lot in they lectures they give.

does anyone else not really get the big deal abt elkowitz and simon??

And I agree this system is TERRIBLE aside from the 2 lecturers listed above.

And now today, GI system in immuno what the hell is this crap? I enjoyed neuro A LOT more. Everything in this system has become a cluster**** of unorganized crap.

We had 3 lectures today that the 2009 class had over 2.5 months and are then told "to restream 2009's lectures". How ironic.

Seriously, why do I even bother going to class its become a total waste of time hearing someone read slides to me.

"Shhh, shhh, shhh.... Put your pencils down. PUT your pencils down. Just listen. Look at me, guys. Look at me. Put your pencils down." 😀

Seriously, I think Elkowitz is a great lecturer.

I used to be anti-lecture, now I'm also slowly becoming anti-stream for some teachers as well. For the lectures where we get accompanying handouts, I'm wondering if time is better well spent just reading those and reading books rather than streaming the lecture, especially if the lecturer just reads off the slides.

It's starting to look like the only reasons to stream/attend lecture are:
A) The lecturer is good and explains things well.
B) The lecturer points out specific topics that will be on the exams.

That's the system I follow which means I try to make it to Dr. Simon, Elkowitz and Fischer lectures. I appreciate the fact that these professors as well as some others show you how to problem solve, give clinical correlations, and are not afraid to use the "B" word.

The good thing about immuno is that there are excellent books on this topic and you don't have to read 5 immuno books to cover the subject. Neuro required too many damn books!

we are going to be going over thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic cavity in anatomy before the year ends. So don't be surprised when we go over reproductive system.

I don't want to believe it 🙁

I have to agree with Dave here. My whole way of thinking is getting all jumbled up by throwing these anatomy lectures in. I mean im not complaining we have to do an anatomy practical or anything but Im not so sure its fair that they can basically throw in any GI question into our written exam, now that they have crammed in a units worth of anatomy lectures within a few hours.

So whatchyall doin for the summer? Any exciting plans, anyone? I'll be back in South Jersey (thank God!!) Can't wait to get off of Long Island, even if its just for a few months 😀

Open space... calm drivers... wooder ice...

🙂 Does anybody know where to find info about research opportunities?I am interested in immunology...or I guess I'll figure it out once I'll start...but still if anybody knows about it please post 🙂 Thanks a lot!!!!

You'll have the opportunity to do summer research the summer after 1st year. You should find out about it around November.

Anybody know anything about the ICC encounter. I've heard mixed things as far as taking a history, full vitals, and neuro exam as well as others saying to focus more on the history rather than the exams. Anybody have a clue?

You do not have to do vitals, but if you have extra time at the end, it's good to practice. Take a thorough history, but leave the majority of the time to do a full neuro exam. The email they sent out to us told us to use the same guide that we used for our brain & behavior exam, so basically those 34 tests we were already tested on. During the briefing right before the encounters, the lady told us to do a full neuro exam. Also, don't forget this isn't a test, so I don't think your performance matters on this one.

hello current NYCOM students,

I am filling out financial aid forms and wondering if "Federal Stafford Loan Program" covers all the tuition. I checked the max allowed amount for it.

I am not sure if I should apply for Grad PLUS loan. Since my parents will cover all the books and living expenses, I do not need extra money other than that for tuition. If Federal Stafford Loan covers all the tuition, I would not need to take it.

I don't think I qualify for PCL and SDS. So, I don't even bother checking them. I never took loan before and I was a little inexperience. What are the things that I should watch out for and what are your recommendation concerning the whole finantial aid process? Thank you very much. As always, I really appreciate your inputs.

I'm pretty sure the Stafford covers the tuition, and the grad plus is for living expenses. If not exact, it was pretty close. Someone else correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for the input. So, the stafford loan is the only loan you will ever need in 4 year med school if you don't have to worry about living expenses?

because of yearly tuition increases stafford will not be enough in years 3 and 4 if i remember correctly. It is possible the gov't may increase stafford amounts but you will fall short of the tuition by 2K-4K if you rely solely on stafford loans in the later years of school.

Perkins loans are also available and is first come first serve and given out by seniority.

You're allowed $189,000 in Stafford. Thats calling it close but you may be a few thousand over that over 4 years.

How living expenses work? I mean do you get check and you cash it two times per year, or cash it each month ,or whole amount of money right away? I am planning to take around 12000 for living expenses and if somebody will explain me how it works I will be very appreciated.🙂

You get it in two equal payments so if you're asking for 12k, you'll get 6k in September and 6k in January.

the problem is not the max total amount but the amount allowed yearly. There is a cap on stafford loan amounts for total cumulative amount and yearly amount. Unless there are changes on this amount then in years 4 (possibly year 3 as well) you will not have enough stafford loan to cover tuition for the year if you are getting NYCOM insurance. This is what explained in Open House and in interviews by the financial director.

If you have insurance from your parents, you don't need to get NYCOM's insurance, am i correct?

THanks for the help, everyone.

and this is GRADPlus loan or private loan (for expenses)? The other question is if i want to use other lender (not NYCOM) do i have to make an appointment with fin aid? What I should put in NYCOM fin aid application? I am working in the City and coming home very very late I guess I have to make an appointment with fin aid...

Yes that was gradplus I was talking about which is for your living expenses. I'm not sure about the answer to your other questions...maybe someone else can comment for you.

Wow that sucks, I didn't realize that until now. I guess we could take out extra gradplus the year before we run out and just send them in a check for health insurance.
