Do the SPs talk to you about your performance at the end of each encounter?

You do not have to do vitals, but if you have extra time at the end, it's good to practice. Take a thorough history, but leave the majority of the time to do a full neuro exam. The email they sent out to us told us to use the same guide that we used for our brain & behavior exam, so basically those 34 tests we were already tested on. During the briefing right before the encounters, the lady told us to do a full neuro exam. Also, don't forget this isn't a test, so I don't think your performance matters on this one.

Attention NYCOM Class of 2010/2011 apartment seekers:

I will be starting at NYCOM this fall, and I am now looking for 2 roommates for a house in Glen Cove. If you are interested, please PM me and I can send you more information (location, rent, dates, etc.).

Some comments from the current tenant, also a NYCOM student, who will be leaving (as will his two roommates) to be closer to clinicals:

"I really lucked out with the house. The location, landlord, drive to school, proximity to the train, gym...I could keep going."

"It worked out really well...it's definitely one of the nicest places I've seen any of the students living in...very roomy, 3 bedroom and 2 and half bathrooms, big kitchen, backyard, washer/dryer in the basement...house is the perfect distance from the train, just close enough to walk it and far enough to not really hear it."

Second question - I have decided to join the ranks of the 43+ million uninsured for the time being. I need to get health insurance through the school, but to do that I need some $$. How do I apply for additional Grad Plus funds for this academic year? I didn't max out, I believe I have 7k left or so. The website I went to: www.nslp.org/nycomloans said the security certificate expired and the site doesn't work.

Any insight is appreciated!

The list was sent to your NYIT email. Sorry dont have mine anymore. The list is basically worthless. She basically is saying know everything there is to know about every drug.

So what are the rules and regs for the primary care scholarship? If I do an IM residency for 3 years and then jump into a fellowship, can I still be considered? I bet you have to actually practice a certain number of years after your residency, huh?... Also, can you apply for it retroactively? (after you're done and realize you want to be an FP or something?)
 
Does EM count as primary care?

Also, does anyone know where we can get our hands on last year's hematology/immunology exam? I would love to use that as a guide to see how I'm doing so far and it's not posted under the Still site.

Last year's test would also tell us if there are only 6-8 pharm questions or if there are like 25 pharm questions.

Personally I'm rooting for about 60 Simon questions, 5 pharm questions, 8-10 elkowitz questions, and about 25 for everyone else, haha.

I tried to attach the heme exam from last year, i hope it worked..if it didnt let me know and i can try again

i havent gone over it in depth, but it looks like there are NO pharm questions, so strange

I'm just curious, where did you get them from? Do you know if you can get the photos from the exams that were missing? They weren't on the AT Still website, just an answer key with multiple choice answers. Do you happen to have even older exams for this by any chance? That'd be awesome if you could post those too in addition to last year's exam.

By the way, if you guys are like me then you hate looking through old exams with the answers on it since it doesn't allow you to really think for yourself. I have regular Adobe acrobat so I was able to convert the files to a word document and then convert them back again without the answers or the highlights. I'm posting the file here for everyone. I hope this a) works and b) helps.

Sounds like Dr. Ahn had a little too much fun in Vegas and just can't seem to let go...haha.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry so much about the run on faculty. Dr. Ahn really knows his OMM but it's not a major major loss. The other OMM faculy are all really nice and helpful.

When's Dr. Scandalous going to leave us? haha

I'd personally be a lot more concerned if Elkowitz jumped ship...even Dr. Simon who has to be my 2nd favorite lecturer (come on, can anyone top Fisher) at NYCOM despite the fact that he needs to fix his hearing aids.
 
Just wondering, does anyone know what the regional hospitals are for our 3rd year?

Also, if you choose to rotate, does anyone know if there are any extenuating circumstances that can allow you to stay in the metro/LI area so you don't get shipped off to Buffalo to do a 12 week medicine rotation...like does having a family allow you at least preference in the NY area? does anyone know...huntergatherer?

I'm pretty sure it's possible to do all your rotations in the NYC metro area. You can choose to do all your core rotations at the same hospital; you apply for this thru a lottery system. Some 3rd years apply this way for hospitals in newark / union area, and therefore move back to jersey for 3rd/4th year.

i got them from a friend who emailed them to me, someone asked a second year for their old exam and its being going around in email...sorry though, i dont have access to any of the pictures which sucks..sorry!
if i find them i will post them ..oh and i dont have any older exams either

I believe the process for getting into the Major Clinical Hospitals where you complete all of 3rd year in one location such as St. Barnabas hospital requires an interview and does not involve the match process. Not sure what else is involved.

The match is for the smaller hospitals where you must match into the available locations.

The match and application to major clinical campuses are seperate.

I could be wrong.

either way you should be able to stay in the NYC metro area.
 
It was terrible on Tuesday so I walked out of class.
I'll be streaming until they decide to get the carpets cleaned :laugh:
 
Can someone explain where this so claimed stench came from? I haven't been in the lecture hall in since Fischer's lecture.

Do you know why the format is different than our normal exams (2 exams with more than 100 questions) and why its dated March 2006 when they took the exam in the fall?

Our lecture hall flooded during the storm last weekend and the carpets were soaking wet and then started to mold. My DPR group was in there today and it looked like the washed the carpets and the smell is gone!!

sorry i have no clue abt the date/format. i just got the exam in an email froma friend and didnt ask any questions

Yeah i've gone to both of them and there were camera's there (not the usual cameras) but I don't know if it'll be posted. Scandalis made some jokes, told some touching stories from his childhood, but didn't talk too much about a plan for NYCOM for the future. The woman today was very vague and seemed to know little about NYCOM or the area. She even said this was only her second time on campus. I was disappointed by both presentations, I was hoping to be wowed by atleast one of them. Scandalis did do a much better job than the woman today, but overall I wasn't impressed by what he had to say. I hope the one next week is significantly better.

Those exams aren't the second yrs test when it was system based but the third yrs test when they were doing hematology and immunology as two different classes, thats y its all heme on one and all immu. on the other and nothing else.
 
So I heard that for this next exam we only have OMM on the thoracic spine and nothing on the rib cage. Does anyone else know if this is true?

Yeah, Dr Saggio told our group that the Immuno/Heme exam will only cover the T-Spine. The Ribs will be on the next exam. That goes for both written and the practical.👍

Dr Van Arnsdale told our class the practical would only cover Thoracic spine and he was unsure if the written exam would include Thoracic and ribs or just thoracic. I don't see why they would include ribs on the written though.

Hey guys I'm coming to nycom next year and i was just wondering what are the major clinical hospitals that we can do our third year at? Also what are the pros and cons of this method compared to 3rd year rotations at the different teaching hospitals

We did the four lectures that we had notes for and then he told them to turn off the streaming. At that point he reviewed for about 40 minutes and then did a final case...I don't remember the number off hand but its the one with the 12 year old girl who was at a picinic in a park on Long Island and was stung by an insect.

He also basically told us what he was covering on the exams...

He went through the questions he submitted and was like "you should know this, you should know this, you should know this..."

All in all there were a lot of things, I'm sure you can ask someone who was there.

He said he's going to have 30 questions on the exam which seems fair to me...although, if he only submitted 30 questions then he only gets 15 (since 15 go on the makeup exam).

That would be somewhat unfair in my opinion since Simon gave us the bulk of the hours of hour lectures...I'm hoping he has 30 questions on the test.

Today at Elky's review he said that Simon has about 30 Qs on the exam, 10-12 micro Qs, Elkowitz has about 8 and that each lecture hour has about 1Q. He also said its very clinically based.
 
Awesome...thanks for posting that info, that calms me down a lot. The only thing I think I know cold at this point is Simon's stuff so that should hopefully help.

Finally a thread coordinator is basing the number of questions on lecture hours...that finally makes sense as opposed to neuro where we would have about 12 hours of Cohen lectures (amazing lecturer) and 0 questions.

I think we had 10 hours of pharm lectures? That's a little worrisome...o well.
