Awesome...thanks for posting that info, that calms me down a lot. The only thing I think I know cold at this point is Simon's stuff so that should hopefully help.

Finally a thread coordinator is basing the number of questions on lecture hours...that finally makes sense as opposed to neuro where we would have about 12 hours of Cohen lectures (amazing lecturer) and 0 questions.

I think we had 10 hours of pharm lectures? That's a little worrisome...o well.

A few of my friends went to that meeting we got an email about for students to talk about how to improve neuro for next year...They actually said that Dr Cohen never submitted questions after multiple attempts of trying to get them from him so that's why we were never tested on his material. They said that the administration felt that his lectures were too important to tell us that we wouldn't be tested on them so that we would still spend a lot of time studying them.

Yeah 10 hours of pharm lectures scare me a lot!! I have a feeling though that Elkowitz will give us a break and put fewer than 10Qs on the exam.

Has anyone compiled a list of drugs that Goldstein said are important for the test??

So my sugar-mamma is going to be working in the city (Manhattan) and we're gonna be living together next year - we thought Queens might be a good middle ground. Anyone have any ideas on where though? I don't know a thing about Queens... some people have mentioned Flushing, Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, and Bayside... but I really have no clue. What would be a reasonable commute for her (where she can just hop on the subway/LIRR and be in the city reasonably quickly) and not so bad for me (25-30 mins)? I think exit 13 off the GCP is my limit in terms of westward movement b/c thats the Jackie Robinson Parkway right? and I always always always get caught in traffic there.

Any help is appreciated!

I live in Forest hills Queens. If you leave by 720am or so it is a 25minute commute to school by car. Going home you are going against the rush hour traffic so it usually fast as well.

I used to go to hunter college on 63rd and lexington and that was 40min commute on the F-train from my doorstep to walking into class. I am about a 10 min walk from 71st street so it is key to live in that Prime area as close to 71st and Queens Blvd as possible. the actual train ride is 20minutes from 71st Ave to 63rd and lexington. The E train and F train are the express trains that run from71st Ave Forest hills into Mahattan

I've taken the LIRR into the city and that gets you to Penn Station in about 12min.

Kew gardens works as well if you are by the train since it is local and then goes express in Forest Hills. they are next to each other. rego is closer to manhattan but in between express stops so it is not ideal for the MTA subway. There is a forest hills and kew gardens LIRR train stop, but I'm not sure about Rego Park.

jackie robinson sucks when it rains because it will be flooded in some spots.

I hope this post gives me good karma for the exam. 😀

I feel so elated that I don't have to study for the retake. Is it just me or the test was hard?

Yeah that test was really hard...I'll be taking the retest because of one point:meanie: ....atleast i'll have the highest score going in there out of all the retesters!!

Several of my friends missed it by 1 point also! It seems like alot of kids in our class scored very low on this exam; not sure why. Ironically, this was my highest scoring exam of the year so far. 😕 Maybe it's b/c I focus my studying on reading books and doing robbins path review questions rather than memorizing powerpoints and this test was designed to be more board style questions? Either way, good luck on the retake. Get it over with, then we only have 1 more exam and year 1 is done 🙂

I'm sick of looking like I'm about to work in the rice paddies.

I have a 34 inseam. Any males able to tell me where they got their scrubs if they fit well? What is your waist size? One prob is my waist. I've been working out and got down from a 42in to 38in but hoping to get to 34in. I'm wearing sweats in OMM and Anatomy lab but if I'm in the hospitals this summer I may wante to wear scrubs.

Anyone do rock climbing at the fair Thursday? I was stupid and used my upper body to get to the top. I think I pulled a Tom Cruise a la MI2! j/k. When I got down I thought I was going to have a SCD! While recupperating I remember watching a show where they said to use your legs.

for retakers and nonretakers:

Eliminate your weaknesses. Finish strong people!

Anyone know when we will be notified about future curriculum changes? With the last class metting already completed it seems we will find out when 2nd year starts.

I have a 36 inch inseam, 36 inch waist and my scrubs that I bought at this uniform store in Jersey fit well (if anything they're a little big).

I can get you the name of the store if you feel like treaching out to bergen county. It's about 10 minutes from the GW bridge on route 4 by route 17...

Just let me know.

That works. I'm actually a 35 inseam(irregular) but sometimes a 34 will work. I could hit the Jersey Shore and that uniform store over the summer so let me know whn you can. Also let me know size it says on your scrubs. Thanks!

My scrubs were all looking like flood pants (I'm a 35 waist, 34 inseam). But for my b-day, my fiance bought me a couple pairs of Dickies brand in XXL and Extra Long and they fit nicely. She says she ordered them online somewhere.

I have the Dickies ones as well in the same size and the bottoms are about 2 inches above my ankles...

My wife thinks the uniform store in Jersey is in Long Island as well near the rack mall...

I'll definitely get the name of the store though (and the brand of the scrubs, it's the store brand) when we pass the store and post it on the list.

I got mine at a place called Life Uniforms, its close to Best Buy in Westbury. They fit me fine and they have cargo pockets which is nice.

I'm sick of looking like I'm about to work in the rice paddies.

This is off-topic but did anyone watch the Sopranos last week? They mentioned an osteopathic physician and it had to due with betting on a football game

anyone here ran the LI marathon today?
I saw a bunch of NYCOM jerseys and i thought maybe they were in SDN too.
how'd u guys do?

http://www.lifeuniform.com/custom_stat/index.html

Yea, apparently it's a chain. That's the place. They have it in Jersey and by the best buy on long island. Check out the site and buy the store brand...it's huge. The XL fits me fine...the XXL was wayyy too big and that's rare for me.

Yeah they have one out in Suffolk near me too...that's where I get mine from. I have no complaints with them.

I'm running the Philly half (Philadelphia Distance Run) in Sept and hopefully the New York Marathon in November, if I can get a lottery spot. But no, not yet ready for it, didn't do the LI marathon.

Thanks! I'll stop by the one next to our school and try a pair.

A shout out to the NYCOM class of 2007

Yo hunter

I got your PM but my box is full and have this issue with paypal so I can't get donor status for a while so I can't reply via PM

Anyway the answer is yes, do you have my PCOM addy? I am going to have my aol messenger on so we can talk if you have aol messenger (my aol username is on my profile). I think you emailed me once so I will try to find your addy, hopefully you can read this.

P.S. (If someone else reads this and is kind enough, would you PM hunter for me? thanks 🙂 )

So who do we complain to about the temperature in the lecture hall? Its getting out of hand again...
Considering they raised tuition again maybe they can use that money to fix the damn thermostat.

Anyone try OMM with bad sunburn before?? Oooo God I'm soo dreading tomorrow....:scared:

So anyone else out there completely stumped on how to study for derm? It really frustrates me to know this stuff is low yield on boards (so i've heard) and we have a whole unit on it.

yes, it's so annoying.
not only is this is the most BORING SYSTEM KNOWN TO MAN but i definitely have no idea how to study for it.
there are a million different skin infections but they all seem the same to me...

AHHHH

i hate derm

at least the treatments are all the same

The good news is that we have a full week off to study for the exam (although memorial day is part of that week). On top of that...the week before our week off we only have 3 total lectures...

So we basically have 2 weeks to study for the exam...

Not to give anyone any ideas to procrastinate or whatnot...

I agree though, everything kind of looks the same. On the other hand, Dr. Hoffman said she's not going to test us with pictures. I can't tell if that is going to make things more or less difficult. She is Dr. Fisher's wife though, so if she takes a page out of his book her questions will hopefully be straightforward.

I can see something like...

"A mother brings her 2 month old son to see you in the summer. His scalp is very red and dry. The other parts of his body appear normal. The child is irritable and there is flaky skin in his crib. The child was born by normal vaginal delivery and was healthy after birth. The most likely diagnosis is..."

A. Atopic Dermatitis
B. Sebaceous Dermatitis
C. Psoriasis Vulgaris
D. Syphilis
E. HIV

Hopefully things are straightforward like that...

By the way, does anyone know when we're supposed to be getting our grades officially posted for Nervous System and Immun/Hematology? I need the credits to appear on my transcript for a tuition reimbursement program that pays by the credit.

I'm gonna guess and say you are in group A2?

Good guess 🙂

I'm in the back shootin the **** with Saggio and then I hear Van Arsdale go, "Y2" and I'm like poor bastard... then I look down and I'm Y2. As I go up, Saggio says "the f*ckin luck, eh" haha.

No kidding I wasnt able to put a good thrust in Danny, my stomach is blistering!

Hey All,

I'm going to be moving out of my current apartment, and I'm trying to find someone to take my spot.

I live in a house that has 4 apartments, all with NYCOM students. The apartment is in an excellent location, less than 2 minutes away from NYCOM with plenty of restaurants/shopping in the area. My apartment is a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment. There will be one available bedroom, and you'd be getting your own bathroom. There is also a large living room as well as a kitchen, and a huge back yard with plenty of parking. The rent is ~$725/month. Utilities are usually around $25/person each month, and TV/Internet/Phone varies with your choice of provider. The apartment should be available sometime in June as I hope to be moved out by then.

If you have any questions, or if you're interested, email me at [email protected] - I usually don't check the forum so that email is best.

Thanks,

Adam Litroff, OMS I

Hi all,

does anyone have a copy of last year's derm exam and would be so kind as to post it?

thanks!
and good luck studying

Hey, everyone!
Sorry to interrupt your chat.
I'm going to start NYCOM in the Fall and I'm in a great need of housing. I'm leaving for the whole summer in the middle of June so I need to find something before I leave.
I'm interested in either a 2 or 3 bedroom (I have a friend who will room with me).
Please, if you know you'll be moving out some time during the summer, or know someone who will, let me know.
I want to be not further than 15 min drive from school.

Thanks so much.
please PM me with any info you've got.

Anyone know how to post on there? I sent the admin an email requesting info on how to do it but got an unhelpful generic reply back. Are we supposed to email the moderators? Thanks!

we get a lot of pharm at the end of this block so don't fall behind!

the hammer?

So far I find this pharm to be a little easier than last section's. Goldstein is doing a much much much better job and I have a feeling that antibiotics are going to be a lot more useful to most of us than antineoplastics and immunomodulating drugs which are used a lot more by specialists. I'm really happy though with the way that Goldstein has responded to probably somewhat negative comments. She really seems to have changed her whole lecture approach and it was definitely very helpful.

2.5 more weeks...just need to all hang in there.

Anyone know if there's a copy of last year's derm exam floating around? It could be very helpful.

Also, if you applied for a research stipend, would you have heard by now if you got it? Does everyone else have that biostatistics course on the top left when they sign into noodle that says you can't access it till may 29th? Is that the 16 hour intro course we need?

Aight, so word on the street is there will be an 80% mandatory attendance next year, which will be checked with hourly clicker quizzes. No more retakes. And possibly they will be adding extra "programs" to our normal afternoons off! Good luck studying for boards. Next year should be a fun year! 👍

Dr. Scandalis talked to us again today about policy changes for next year. Here's what I remember, Huntergatherer can touch on some too since he was there!

Retests: There will be no retests next year, but there will be a makeup test for people with documented reasons (illness, family death, etc) for missing the exam. Each thread will have atleast 2 exams and the grades will be averaged. If you fail 1 course, you will recieve an "Unsatisfactory" on your transcript until the course is remediated over the summer in which case it will turn into a Pass. If you fail to remediate this course or if you fail a 2nd course you will be dismissed from the college.

Attendence: Streaming is here to stay, but attendence of 80% in lecture and 90% in lab will be required. Students falling below 80% and 90% will either lose points off the exam or will recieve an Unsatisfactory in the course. Attendence will be taken via the clicker quizes based on the assigned reading for a lecture. The percentage points are course hours, NOT lecture numbers. Also, this means that now we are allowed to miss up to 10% of lab and we do not need to make them up in the summer.

Boards: Starting with the class of 2011 (not 2010), you will be required to pass Step I on the COMLEX to start your clinical rotations.

Faculty: They hired people to work with the faculty to facilitate better lectures and class participation.

That's basically all I can think of now. They're also going to look into having us all take the exams in the two NYCOM III lecture halls so we have similar testing conditions. They have no idea what's going to happen with anatomy, Dr. Scandalis seemed surprised when we told him we were going to finish all of anatomy this year.

Yeah I wasn't sure where that came from because Scandalis didn't say anything about that but then this one kid raised his hand and asked if we were still going to have MWF 8-12 TTH 8-5 and Scandalis said that there may be some early afternoon programs...

I meant any bad news Scandalis was giving out today.

I'm doing reseach and was told I needed to complete paperwork by Wednesday May 16th. This is for people doing research in June since I think it is part of the 2006-2007 academic year.

There is a research course in the NYCOM Movies site but I'd wait to see if they have something else for us this year. I have not seen that Noodle site you mentioned.

Talk to Linda about the research program since she is the person you give your paper work.

Maybe this will make for better lecturers..

I'm sure what will end up happening is people will bring their laptops to the lecture hall and stream, read notes, etc while in lecture (unless they turn off streaming during the day)

Does anyone know if the clicker quizzes are going to be graded or just used for attendance purposes only?

80% attendance isn't so bad...although I can't remember the last time I did an 8 AM to 5 PM day...that's gonna really suck bigtime. What's going to really suck about that though is what happens if you happen to step out to go to the bathroom during a clicker quiz or something or even if you get sick and have to miss a full day of class... I hope they'll give people some leeway over extenuating circumstances.

Thankfully we don't have anatomy practicals anymore though next year. At least that's what Dr. Hill told me...

All I know is, thankfully we only have to deal with this garbage for 1 year. I hope these new policies won't impact our board scores too much. I personally think Scandalis is a ***** because he's making things difficult for the average student, not easier. Things should be easier on us so that we ace our boards which is the most important thing.

Isn't more handholding what we all wanted/needed? I mean, you're never going to have to manage your time / think independently when you're a Dr., right?

Although it was not mentioned by Scandalis as he explained the new system he answered a similar question with "quizzes should count for some part of your grade otherwise it is pointless". It does not seem they have this set in stone.

sucks since I need to look at something about 3 times for it to stick and hourly quizzes would not work for me.

Does anyone know if the clicker quizzes are going to be graded or just used for attendance purposes only?

Is there anyway we can go on strike? Class action lawsuit against Scandalis? Something?

Counting quizzes in my opinion would be the worst thing they could do to us. When we need to be studying for the boards we shouldn't have to worry about studying every night to do well on clicker quizzes. Absolutely ridiculous in my opinion. It doesn't allow us to tailor our own studying schedules at all. I think it's fine and dandy if they want to use the quizzes for attendance purposes and to allow us to gauge how the questions are going to be on the exams but I mean, this is just getting ridiculous. I have a feeling that a lot of us would NOT have chosen to go to NYCOM if we knew that it was going to be like this and we would have chosen other schools.

It really bothers me because I feel like these new changes they're making are going to hurt me on the boards, not help me. It's absolutely insane. Instead of trying to help the people failing tests, why don't they try to accomodate the people who have been doing what they've been supposed to so far.

thats sucks......wonder what happen to that dean selection for next year....
