*** Official NYCOM Class of 2010 *** pt. 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Word on the street is "Back to the Basics" may be getting cancelled. I know we are all studying hard for the test on monday, but try to come out and voice your opinion at the Dean's lunch tomorrow.

Only 4 more NYCOM exams to go...

Is anyone else excited by the fact that DeBeer has like 8 lectures coming up? Not for the lectures, but for the fact that he repeats his exact questions in class on the exam?

Anyway, what'd you guys think of the exam today?

I think Pavia and Hallas' questions were completely out of left field. It was almost completely differnt from the points that were emphasized in class. That was a huge disappointment considering I thought biochem would be the hardest portion of the exam. Had I known that Hallas and Pavia were going to completely f*** us over I would have spent less time with biochem

I honestly didn't think Hallas or Pavia's questions were out of left field...hallas just didn't post slides he used in class. I wasn't expecting it, but that's his right to do so.

Pavia had a couple of difficult ones but a lot of his answer choices made no sense...

Like the shigella answer...no other choice was a bacteria.

Anyway...considering debeer had like 25 questio0ns, I have a feeling we're gonna see another 90 median just like endocrine.

The test was fine.

I didn't appreciate having so much Debeer though, I don't care if he gave us the answer or whatever its just stupid that instead of learning the material I have to learn his dumb*** answers. But thanks for the points anyway, I hope it helps me in June.

I also thought some of the questions had multiple answers like one of the DPR questions and one of Elkowitz's. But overall it was a good test, most of our test this yr have been okay. I wonder if it has to do with the new policy.

Do we have to dress up Weds for the fair?

I disagree with this. i think he could have changed some of the questions around a little, but i actually think that i know what to do in some of GI cases that can hit me. he gave us likely scenarios and what to do. If x happens do y. i know its not the best way to do this but i think it DOES prepare us better for real world applications.

Also, what do you mean by the new system? multiple exams?

I totally agree, although with Pavia she is right below, most of his questions, while if you dont look at the answers were ridiculous, when you see the choices you realize that its gotta be a certain bug.

But HALLAS, damn him, either dont give us a review and then we can study normally or give it and use similiar questions. His were way off, he shouldnt have given the damn review and i would have studied him more. Or at least mention that we might need to see zoomed up pics. i was totally thrown off by EVERY question of his. its sad how i got most of biochem right and most of hallas wrong. yeah histo should be harder than biochem, that makes sense, NOT.

I don't think Hallas ever said he was going to use the same pictures, it may have been assumed, but like with DeBeer, if you need to know the info for the boards, you may as well study it right the first time.

I agree a bit about DeBeer. Learning those complex questions helps learn the material. No one says you don't have to study anything but the questions. Study the material, then make sure you know the questions...that was my philosophy with him.

I also think his questions will help us in the hospitals. They are very clinically oriented and are apparently what step 2 questions are like.

i think when hallas said in his review that "these might be pictures that you will see on the upcoming exam, hint hint!!", it would be pretty safe to assume that those should be the pictures you should study. if you understood the histo though, the pictures werent too difficult to figure out anyways.

Elkowitz's question did have 2 answers, he meant to put intestinal type, not infiltrative, so he's giving credit for both. If the DPR question you're talking about is the one for which organ is in the RUQ, it said ONLY, and the liver crosses the midline (it may not be the one, but i heard other people who put liver, so i'm just saying).

I’m a third year on my rotations, and I haven’t checked back at this forum for about 2 years. I can’t believe you people still post here. Class of 2010 PART III?! Jeez. Our class stopped complaining on SDN about two months after we started. I suppose everyone has been in need of a place to vent ever since Scandal-ous too our webboard privileges away.

Don’t you people have any more productive things to do, like, say, studying for the NATIONAL BOARDS, for example? That’s what you really should be worried about, not whether or not the questions on the last exam were well written. You do know that the class of 2009 had a 71% first time pass rate don’t you? (Got it from a very reliable source, though I would not bet my life on it.)

Oh, and by the way, DeBeer = the adult voice from Charlie Brown.

Good luck to you all,

Anybody think they will give us a day off OMM on Tuesday to attend the Giants' parade???? hahahahahha
Go Giants!!!! Greatest underdogs ever

National who?...Oh yeah. 😱

Just a heads up to all of you kids out there in streaming land, new rule as of today: if 80% of the class doesn't show up everyday, streaming will be turned off.

On the bright side, if you really are opposed to coming, "the policy requiring 80% individual attendance for passing the course will be dropped," so now you don't have to worry about every showing up or handing off your clicker.

Whatever your position on the attendance matter, I think we can all agree this is getting annoying. Especially when we have more important things to worry about, ahem ..step 1...ahem.

First year here. I have tried to defend nycom a little but this one is beyond me. Cant they just let the people study how they want to. I stream before tests all the time and if i dont have it my grades will seriously suffer. Add one more to the anti-nycom club. they lost a defender in the 2011 room. man this sucks.

I thought it was funny when Scandalis said it was wrong that people are leaving class to go study. I mean why are we in school?

Really what is the point of this attendace policy? Last yr it was b/c the class was doing bad on exams now whats the reasoning? A lot of lecturers prob. complained about students walking out during class, must of been a blow to their ego.

Sometimes I wonder if Scandalis has our best interest at heart. But look at it this way now I can use my extra time to study for boards, yes!!!!!

I'm seriously bummed. I go to the majority of lectures and still need to stream certain lecturers as they have accents or the material is difficult. This doesn't really make sense. How is this going to make us better doctors? Isn't that the goal?

they wasted so much money on monitoring attendance from installing detectors to the stupid ez pass thing to just forget the whole thing. including the overtime they had to pay to the tech guys and the cost of the trackers we could have all gotten free kaplan courses. What an idiot!!! someone should report him to the OPMC for mismanaging our tuition money

The study room HAS been pretty crowded of late, TSK TSK.

I wonder how this decision went down in the batcave. They were all sitting around a table allowing Scandalis to make all the indecisions and first he thought hmmm maybe we can take some good food off the menu, or make the tests an hour earlier for every class the lectures are under eighty percent!

The bottom line is, this was the best way to go. I mean come on streaming is a crutch, most of the lectures are EASY PEASY. Its only med school. We are LEGEND. The people in the front who show up to every class, even when there is no class, an show up hours before just to get those seats deserve to lose streaming as well.

As for you DISGUSTING studying fascist pigs, how will we ever get half decent lecturers if you walk out on the bad ones?

Did I hear 70 percent passing rate?! Grrrrr. Not on my turf. I mean in ten to twenty years there will be research facilities, a "little harvard,Yale, and Princeton square, and Nycom will be a shining beacon of all that is good in med school, and no one will even REMEMBER you pathetic low down red diaper doper babies. Ha! So we win. Pay up byatches.

I dont see how they can get rid of streaming other than the fact that they suck at running this school.
No offense to KUmar because he is the man. But when he lectures i needed to restream a few times just to understand the words he said. Streaming is just as much a study aid for me as the powerpoints and it will really piss me off if we dont have it anymore.

I have not posted on here in a while but I took a look and could not believe how you people have enough free time to complain about your tests. You don't really need the streaming, just go to class, memorize the powerpoints a few days before the test. Use the rest of the time to make sure you pass your boards unlike my punk-@$$ classmates who did not seem to get that message. I will not recommend how to study for the boards since everyone has their own take on that, but any way you do it just do it. Maybe if just a few of you used all the anger you have to complain about some lame NYCOM tests and studied for boards instead a few more would pass.

They are just annoying. I wish they would just leave me alone.

2 Questions. First do we need to pass the anatomy written practical to pass the course, or is ti combined with the OMM?

Also, does it make sense that the anatomy will be ONLY on the pictures posted for us?

BTW, to the guy who b*tches about people b*tching, i dont know about you but i DO study for the boards and thats EXACTLY why i dont go to class, b/c i dont want to waste my time like you said. i stream at 2x or just read the ppt's, no reason to waste my time coming to class and a, having long breaks between lectures, and b, listeing at the ridiculously slow pace of most lecturers.

its 2008, nothing wrong with a fine ONLINE med school like NYCOM.

Hey anyone that has done/considered the DPC (PBL course). Can you please post your thoughts on the curriculum? Or if you can PM me i have some specific questions.

I am currently deciding whether to apply for it now and wanted to get feedback from students.

I think you just need to pass the combined OMM/Anatomy

anyone hear any info on regionals?? interviews were supposed to be started today, but i dont know of anyone who recieved any info. who here applied to regionals and to which ones?? thanks

I spoke to Elena DeMayo...from what I gathered from her the interviews will start on Monday next week. A ton of people applied to regionals and they're having a difficult time scheduling everyone in.

I heard of people from Kingston and St. Barnibis in the Bronx got their interviews. I applied to Good Sam but heard the guy is on vacation for 2 weeks so who knows what's happening there!

St. Barnabas has begun notifying people and maimo as well

its still early though so don't freak if you haven't heard from your number 1

thanks for the info guys. i hadnt heard of one person receiving any info as of today that i know, glad to hear the wheels are starting to move on the process for some people

Good Sam has too. Anyone heard from NUMC?

NUMC was what I asked elena demayo about. That's what she said figure next week. There's going to be 2 interviews at NUMC, a group interview and a personal interview. Dr. Steier interviews everyone though, so they're not preselecting for interviews.

is a group interview when a group of ppl interviews you, or 1 person interviews a group of people simultaneously???

I hope the former... otherwise that would just be awkward

Good Sam is a group interview meaning all 23 of us with 2 interviewers all at once! Yeah, this is going to be incredibly awkward!

Did everyone get the e-mail for the NUMC interviews? I could have sworn Elena De Mayo told me 50 something people applied for NUMC but only 28 e-mail addresses were listed on the e-mail I received. Does anyone know if she broke it up into 2 e-mails?

That's great news if only 28 people applied for NUMC since there are 26 spots. That's pretty good odds. I have a feeling she sent out 2 e-mails though.

We have a spacious, sunny bedroom available in a 3 bedroom apartment in Glen Cove, an 8 minute drive to campus. The apartment has a fully equipped kitchen, and a large bathroom. Within walking distance to many restaurants and downtown Glen Cove. Plenty of on street parking available. Live with 2 current NYCOM students. Rent is $500 a month; internet, gas, and electric are shared. Water included in rent. If interested, please send a PM. Available immediately.

There were at least 2 groups, i think 3. A group went at 1 today, 3 today, and i believe there is one on friday.

in case anyone didnt notice the anatomy answer key is up

according to the syllabus for GU the written exams are weighted 30% 30% 40% for exams 1, 2, and 3 respectively. For Repro it is weighted 25% 25% 50% for exams 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Did I miss any in -class commments on this? The last exam of each system is probably easier for most students but that's some heavy weighting for the end of the year.

In addition, check out the weights of the practical exams for the last test compared to the second test...

I wish they would have at least made the 2nd test the heaviest weighted exam. I was hoping to be able to worry more about boards heading into the last exam than a NYCOM exam but I just guess that's the way it is. Do well enough on the first 2 exams and you still shouldn't have to worry TOO much on the last one.

arghh...what takes so long for statistics on the exam. They posted the practical grades, when are they going to throw out the number for honors.

anyone remember what your honors was for neuro last year?

I believe our neuro honors last year was 87 or something...maybe 88?

Thanks guys. I could see it being a point or two higher because we had the extra test in each system but we shall see next week. Actually NYCOM doesnt get anything done in a week. We shall see in two weeks.
