The only thing that was different was when someone asked what he was going to do about the low moral on campus. He honestly said,"You are first and second year medical students. You are NOT supposed to be happy. If you are happy then something is wrong." At first I thought he was joking, but then as he talked about it more I think he was actually serious. Thoughts from anyone else who was there??

wow...at least he realizes that "moral" on campus is more than just how you feel about studying/being in med school. you should be happy and say with out shame/reservation that yes, I go to NYCOM. but i dont think at this point any of us can say that wholeheartedly. i mean of course we're not gonna be happy when we study, it's all those other times that suck. it's obvious that the student body isn't happy with those who run our school...if only they sent out evaluations for not only the faculty, but for the deans, chairs, etc. interesting how they don't do that, no?

btw, what are those those brand spanking new lcd monitors outside of the lecture halls and study rooms for? if they use it for advertising then that's a great way to spend money...advertise to the students already matriculated. damn geniuses i tell you.

so just got news [news to me at least] that notes wont be available for dr. maeseka's (sp?) lecture tomorrow till after class...so basically no class tomorrow, unless you like to sit there with no notes👎

I thought I was the only person that was like WTF? Random ways to spend money.

Sucks that Scandalis said that, but I'm not really surprised. Did alot of people attend the meeting, are the other deans there during the meeting or just him? Also when he said that what was the adminstration's reaction?

The other faculty just sat in the front row and said nothing. Not many went to the meeting at all, and those who did it seemed like they are upset that the school doesn't love them enough.

The only new information that was given was another reason why we need to come to class. Dr. Scandalis said, according to NY state regulation if a course is an online course, then it needs to be registered as an online course; if not there must be attendance taken in class. He also said he poked his head in on the first years the other day and that there was less than 80% present. He then proceeded to assure us his threats about taking away streaming video were real, to which a student raised their hand and said "The kids that don't come to class won't come even without video. They prefer to use books, notes on their own, etc." At this, the dean was astounded and asked, "How do you know this??!!"

I think someone did bring up the new lcd monitors, but nothing was really said about them.

That was the important part of the meeting. The other half was about a NYCOM formal, to which Plasticman responded quietly, "Who cares about a formal? The only dance I'm concerned with is a tango with step 1."

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I do NOT think Dean Scandalis is out to get us. I think he has long term goals for NYCOM and is trying very hard to slowly get us there. I think with his personality, he comes off as being antagonistic to students, although I don't think that is his intention. If he would reach out to us and ASK us to come to class for the sake of making a better and closer knit NYCOM and try to level with us, many more kids would respond much more so than someone demanding it.

They cleverly scheduled the meeting during a time when most of C/O 2011 was concentrating on studying. Who wants to hear bummer after bummer about your education when you care more about the impeding doom (i.e. exam). It's also awesome 1/3 of the material on the exam was covered Thursday, 4 days before the exam. SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICKKKKKKKK.

I wasn't able to pick up my pda today...anyone know what type they got for us?

Also, are we allowed to return ours to a store and pay a little extra for a better version or is that not allowed?

Also, anyone know if we're supposed to possibly hear about our regionals before March 11 or is that set in stone for when they're going to tell us our regionals?

The meeting with the dean also happened to be at a time when many NUMC people were interviewing and couldn't attend.

The truth is though, Plasticman is right, Scandalis does have our best interests in mind. Whether or not we can agree he's doing things the right way, many class of 2009 kids failed the boards last year. I've heard numbers as terrible as only 64% pass rate for lecture kids.

If that's true, he really should be trying to do everything he can to a) weed out weaker students who won't do well on the boards and b) try to make sure that everyone else passes.

NYCOM happens to take a chance on many kids who wouldn't get into allopathic medical schools. Many of the kids who had a chance taken on them do well and succeed at NYCOM, some don't. Maybe NYCOM needs to be a little tougher with the admissions standards since it's unfair that everyone who comes expects to graduate but maybe only 80-85% will...but, the truth is, if the board rates continue to be terrible, NYCOM will lose accreditation. Scandalis has to do something to fix that, and so far he's been taking action. We just have to weather the storm and hope that what he's doing is going to work, but at least he's making the effort to do something.

Its Palm Tungsten, I'm not sure about the upgrade but I'm thinking about going to staples and seeing if they'll let me get a T/X. I heard last yr kids were able to do that.

ok, I'm glad it's not the z22.

The upgrade should only cost $100 then. The Palm Tungsten is much better than the z22 even if we're not allowed to upgrade. It's the same as the T/X without wifi, but the wifi could be very helpful to keep us from having to constantly dock it with a laptop.

Dr. Scandalis mentioned this in the 1st Meeting with the Dean.

As 2nd years we have a decent schedule for the rest of the year. Mostly 8-12 or 9-12 4 days a week and Tuesday with an 11 o'clock lecture with lab in the afternoon.

We got tungsten E2s today.

From what I heard through the grapevine: The E2 has the ability to have wifi, but you need to get a card (looked it up online, it runs about $80) If that is the only upgrade you're looking for, it'd probably be easier to just get that then figuring out how/where to return the pda. The reason they gave for not having one w/ wifi was something to do with the hospitals putting up firewalls because they want to limit all internet use to designated stations within the hospital (Probably so they can regulate it). Apparently we are allowed to use different PDAs, but for what we need it for, an upgrade is unnecessary. If you just want something nicer though, I'm pretty sure you can.

Hey guys, I saw you picking up those PDA's today while practicing for omm, Congrats.

Im just curious what advice/books/ anything you can tell us about the next block. I know its run better, but I for one am a little burnt out, and dont want to get slapped in the face not knowing whats coming.

Is it harder then nuero? etc etc.

Thanks!

Yup I just found that out, you can buy the Wifi card from the Palm site. I went to Staples and was told me I had to talk to the Palm people if I wanted to exchange it. Plus the T/X is really ugly in real life.

If your next block is Immunology/Heme its not hard at all, just listen to Simon and you'll pass. Plus there's this funny doctor in Heme, Shapira or something like that.

There is alot of simon, but they seem to re arrange the courses given due to the two test system. So there are 8 hours of micro or something like that. Thanks though.

I bought the immunology text last year and read it cover to cover. I don't think I missed a single immunology question on the exam (heme was a different story).

It was a very solid text, a pretty easy read and not too long. You can get by on just Simon's notes but I felt like Immunology was a pretty basic topic that applies to all other fields so I focused on it.

Like I said, you can get by on just reading Simon's notes, but it may not be a bad idea to buy the immunology text. The one they recommend is actually like an abbreviated version of a larger text anyway.

I stand corrected. Maybe I didn't hear it, because I was too busy hoarding entire boxes of greasy pizza to myself. :meanie:

heme wasnt too bad, simon's a great teacher and he pretty much gives away all of his questions.

but pharm really killed me, but then again i hate pharm in the first place. there's tons of it in the system so definitely keep up with it...the antineoplastics and anti virals really killed me, i dont remember jack tho. but it might be different for you guys cuz they give you more exams.

So, what's everyone doing w/ the PDA's? Trading in for store credit to upgrade? Buying the WIFI card for the E/2? Getting a phone PDA w/ Palm OS and using that? Or just sticking with the E/2?

Is NYCOM giving us a whole bunch of medical E-books and software to run on these? If so, will all the stuff only work on Palm OS or will it work on mobile windows too?

Geez, I have no idea what this means. 🙂

Do we have to use the palm pilot they gave us? Can we just write our logs out and hand them in? I'm a pencil and paper kinda girl.

You have to use the palm, because you sync it and email it in I believe (or they have a program we upload it to).

I personally am keeping the one they gave us... It's free, and no hassle. I'm going to buy a 2GB memory card for it. I have no use for internet since most of the hospitals block it, and anywhere else I would be that wireless is available (like home) I can just use my computer. It's not like it's a card that allows you to connect via a phone... you're just going into the wireless available like your computer does. What am I going to do? Go to a panera bread so I can check my email? No thanks.

That's why I was asking if people were just going to upgrade to a PDA phone instead. If you have a palm treo w/ internet service through your wireless carrier, you could just upload your logs / check your email anywhere including the hospital.

Maimo has WIFI

I have WIFI on my PSP and I don't use it alot at all but its still nice to have, like if I'm at the airport or at Bryant Park I just go to my PSP and theres the internet. I ordered the WIFI card and I'm just going to stick to E2, but if I wasn't locked into my phone contract and broke I would def. upgrade to a smartphone. But I do remeber hearing the Treo wasn't compatible with the log program, e-mail the ATG people and ask them.

Do you guys know if there going to give us the medical programs or do we have to buy them?

I'm planning on getting the wifi card for the palm pilot. I'm first setting my pilot up now though.

Wifi cards are nice, even if your hospital doesn't have internet, most people at least have it in their homes. It saves you from having to connect to your laptop every time you want to e-mail logs in. To me, that's worth the $80. I also think you can get some use out of it in public places to check sports scores, etc. If you live anywhere near the city, you can pretty much pick up free wireless anywhere. That makes it worth it.

On the other hand, the Palm Treo will run you about $300 from verizon wireless plus it costs $50 extra a month for service. Over the course of 2 years that's a $1500 cost. To me, that's not worth it, so I'm going to stick with the wifi card.

Also, I don't know if it's true, I heard they charged us $600 for these pda's on our tuition bill. I'm not sure how much the extended warranty cost, (probably $50) but these pda's only cost $200, let alone the fact that NYCOM probably got a discount on them. Anyone want to appeal to NYCOM to have them cut us checks for the price difference?

Again, I don't know if this is true, but does anyone want to check it out?

Also...Dr. Witryol, does anyone know the story of what happened to him?

i wish i knew.

we had a lecture from dr. gilliar today and he prefaced it by saying that dr. witryol is no longer with the college and that he'd like to leave it at that.

I know the keyboard is like another $50, but that still doesn't add up to 600.

As for Witryol, maybe too many people complained that when they went for shoulder pain, he shoved his finger in their perineum, and when they asked why he did that, he responded "that's between you and your conscience." (That is a true story, that happened to my male friend in the clinic)

Lol. It is a true story - but it was in the OMM lab practicing for a practical. I was there. Hahaha.

Ew, ok, I so didn't realize that happened in the lab. That is even worse.

i dont wanna start any hearsay but from what i hear he's been getting a lot of complaints against him and the event that led to his dismissal was some incident with a 1st year. he/she went to the clinic for treatment (something shoulder or cervical) and he hyperflexed his/her head to the point of inflicting pain...he/she verbalized that the maneuver hurt but he kept going...so that's that.

the guy was a bit creepy, i always thought there was something off about him, but there's no denying that he was really intelligent when it came to OMM. he had some pretty sick omm skills...he was able to do stuff like diagnose a pelvic shear by putting his finger on your eyebrow [exaggeration btw] hope they replace him with someone competent.

yea, he was like an OMM savant...great teacher but I wouldn't want him working on me because he was pretty painful.

Who knows about the rumors, I'm sure they had a good reason for letting him go. It may also be a possibility that he chose to leave on his own. I'm sure details will leak out over the next few weeks.

Does anyone happen to know where that .pdf is that has our estimated tuition and fees for our years here?

They just sent out the stafford loan info...if our tuition and fees are only ~40,000 next year that means we get cut a pretty large refund check.

Good, I'm glad he's gone. He had no sense of personal space, plus he always pressed so freaken hard, seriously what the hell was with that?
He was one strange dude who I always felt would end up on here: http://www.familywatchdog.us/

With him and Ahn gone, The OMM lab has become a much better place.

Dr. Witryol gone?!?!

I can't believe they let him go. He was one of the most knowledgeable OMM teachers we have ever had, and he gave me the best OMM treatment/exam I've ever received. What a huge mistake. He was very, very talented. I feel this is truly a bad move on NYCOM's part. To anyone who actually received treatment or who tried to learn anything from Dr. Witryol, you know how talented with OMM he is. He just had a strange sense of humor. A sad loss for NYCOM. 👎

I agree he seem to really care about the students learning and that an important thing...I'll miss him

Yea, I'm a little sad to see him go. I hope he left on his own terms and not because of him being fired.

He was one of the best actual teachers in the OMM department. He really did care about teaching and didn't seem to worry as much about grades. Every time I had him grade a practical of mine I did very well on it but he would use much of the time to teach me alternative ways of treating various things. In a way he was like an OMM savant. Now, if he inappropriately touched people, that's obviously very wrong. I honestly hope he had no malicious ideas when doing such things.

On a side note, did anyone else know he did his PM&R residency at Johns Hopkins...pretty impressive. In a way, it was nice to have an MD on campus who was a DO at heart.

On a side note, did anyone notice Josie D'Urso's most recent e-mail. It was about extending matchstix because we have an exam on Wednesday March 12?

Am I missing something, isn't our test on Monday?

Is there a test I don't know about this wednesday? Could it be the ACLS retake? Does anyone know if it's that day? I'm a little nervous now that we have some test I don't know about.

I think the DPC content exam is Wednesday. I'm not positive though.

For those of you who didnt work at all this last year, did you still file taxes in order to complete your FAFSA? If not do we just fill in zeros in our FAFSA? Any info on this subject would be helpful. Thanks.

You just put in zeros.

Yeah he was definitely a great guy that went above and beyond to help students when they needed it and was one of the most talented manipulators in the department. Shiowitz, Teitlebaum, Chaudhry, Wytriol....who's next? Let's pray its Friedman! Haha

Pick your next favorite teacher remaining among the current faculty; most likely this will be the next one gone. This is the proposed theory.

There's no way they get rid of Elkowitz, Simon, Marcus, etc.

As good of a teacher as Witryol was, we a) don't know why he's gone, it may have been his own choice and b) if it had to do with him making students uncomfortable, that's a legitimate reason.

I think the OMM department as a whole tends to be very friendly and helpful. Same with the anatomy department. Most of our actual teachers are very helpful. There's not too many of them I'd be happy to see go.

Only 2 more to go!

Does anyone know if they've contacted anyone about regional hospitals yet or if they're waiting to contact everyone tomorrow?

One of the reasons I'm really hoping I get accepted to my regional choice...

On the exams today...did anyone else find the reproductive system exam to be as easy as endocrine and the GU to be a bit harder than expected?

Anyone else wish they just combined both systems for 1 grade as opposed to testing both separately at the same time?

Also, did anyone else notice that the correct answer was marked off for one of Maesuka's questions?

I had exam B...I think it was around question 7-10 or something. There was a little asterisk next to choice A.

I agree that repro was not bad at all, and GU had some tough questions. I thought that Maesaka and DPR were the most difficult parts of the test. For DPR, it always seems that I don't study the right thing, or that I find multiple correct answers. It would make life alot easier if GU and repro were calculated as one grade.
