Hey vinoyp,

Why did you end up picking nymc?

I really liked the school, and my commute from nyc is only 15min. However, I just got a call from downstate, and I'm having...... thoughts.

Hey idq1i,

I sent you a PM. I hope that helps.

I'll be going you all in a week! THat is unless I hear from my stateschools. The onl;y reson that I'd bail on you guys is that money I'd beable to get by better if i stayed instate. BUt I did love the campus at NYMC. See you soon

Are all first years guaranteed on campus housing?

yup, thats what they told me... all first year coming med students are gauranteed housing.

Hey people! I am a little concerned about these things:

$400 microscope
$400 A/C for student housing

Does anyone have any suggestions for procuring these items for less than this? I checked into the A/C thing and of course the size you need to fit in the sleeve is completely odd, forcing us to buy their model. It seems like 3rd or 4th years moving out would sell theirs, 'cause they won't fit in any old place...

You most likely won't get the scope for less $. When did you get the A/C letter? That makes no sense - why would every entering class have to get their own? I'm really glad I'll be living off campus

Congratulations guys!

NYMC is a great school. They're going to teach your butt off and you're going to work hard. But it's going to be worth it. You'll find by the time Step I of the boards comes along that you will have been trained well. Please say hi to Father Pravetz for me when you meet him (anatomy professor and Franciscan monk who is an EXTRMELY nice guy and very good teacher).

A couple of things about the issues that were raised.

The microscope is $400 if you buy it from the school. But there are other options. If you are financially qualified you'll get a Parent's Council microscope for $200 that you keep for the first 2 years. You can also rent from other private companies that will be coming by the school. Also, many students are selling their microscopes as tey move on to 3rd yr. That's actually the best deal because you can simply sell the scope again when you hit you clinicals too.

Air conditioning for $400? Unless there is a new rule that wasn't in place before I left I never heard of this one. Most of the AC's you buy CAN fit in the sleeves.. they just can't be too big. As long as they fit though, you can stuff towels on the sides and seal itoff with duct tape (a VERY common practice among as grassland habitants).

Feelfree to PM me if you have anymore questions. Again congratulations, you're going to have a long but wonderful journey.
