Anyone out there going to Pitt this August? My girlfriend and I will both be in the 2007 class (our first choice) and would love to hear from our future classmates. see you in a couple of months and good luck to everyone on the waitlist.

Hi! I'm headed to Pitt as well. Try posting to the forums at www.pittmed.pitt.edu if you'd like to get to know other admits. Great to hear that you and your s.o. are both headed to the same place. Congrats.

Ditto. I haven't decided yet, but I'll be at second look. See you there.

Well, I think I have finally chosen Pitt over Case! So as long as financial aid offers (or unlikely waitlist action) don't throw me back into confusion, that's where I'll be. Hallelujah!

Anyone know if Pitt is one of those schools that doesn't do AOA?

Nevermind. I just found out that it does.

I'll be at Pitt next year! KBCoch, congratulations on making your decision. Doctor Octopus, we met at second look weekend... have you decided where you are going next year?

I have made my decision. Now Case Western must decide whether or not I go to Pitt. I let my other acceptances go, but Case has me on their alternate list. I wrote them a letter of intent stating that I would immediatedly withdraw from Pitt if they accept me. I actually like Pitt slightly better, but it just makes a lot more sense for me stay in Cleveland (for several reasons). However, I will not be disappointed at all if I end up at Pitt. It's really a win-win situation.

Hey, Dr. O. If I do indeed end up withdrawing from Case after financial aid awards come back, I'll put in a special request that they give my slot directly to Dr. O.

😉

So who else is going to Pitt?

Thanks KBCoch! I wish it really worked that way.

Good luck with your decision too. I'm almost glad that fate will now determine mine.

Did anyone else get a frightening financial aid offer from Pitt? Not a penny in grants for me, which was surprising...

Anyone know why the student budget went to 56,000???? It seems comparatively high.

😱

KB, I got about 8K in scholarship, and then some 5K alumni loan. What scares me is the 32K in unsub (since the sub limit is 8500) The remaining 2K is private loans. I'll bet they threw me some need based since my expected family income is 12K. Still, I'm wondering if I should have gone with Ohio State or Cincinnati afterall. Even if tuition were static over the four years I'll still come out over 200K in debt. 🙁

Don't worry so much about the year budget. I assure you that you won't need nearly that much, as long as you don't live like you have a lot of money. I think I only ended up using a total of about 45 grand this year, including tuition. Housing here is so cheap, especially if you get a house mate. Even some of my classmates who seem to live fairly extravagantly ended up giving back several thousand of their loan money...

Yeah, I'm out of state. You really can live VERY cheap here. Housing costs are unbelievable, and there are so many free things to do or they are cheap. I think this is an incredible city for its size - none of the hassle of living in a huge city, but big enough that I always feel like there is a new neighborhood to explore and something new to do on a Saturday night. If you just stay in Shadyside and Squirrel Hill and never venture out to some of the other neighborhoods, you will miss out on a lot.

You also can't beat free bus fare...

Well, it turns out that financial aid offers did throw me back into confusion, and it looks like I won't be attending Pitt after all. Case offered me some free money, and Pitt couldn't help me much, so Case it is.

Looks like I won't be able to give you my spot after all, Dr. O. But maybe we'll be classmates.

Good luck at Pitt, all. It's an awesome school.

Congrats on finally knowing where you're going to be

😉 . I'll know soon enough, one way or the other. I won't be too disappointed either way.

Just thought that I'd bring this thread back up because the fateful day has passed and I want to hear from some of my new classmates. cheers.

Greetings all... Just got the call from Dr. Curtis... Any advice? How is the financial aid thing at Pitt? Lisa Wick is gonna call me soon... but I'm anxious to know.

Say, what do you all think of the PBL and curriculum?

another question-
When does Pitt start orientation?

Aug 11th or 12th

oh and it's manditory.

hello fellow
classmates,
just wanted to say i'll be at pitt this fall!
looking forward to meeting you all.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to introduce myself because as of right now I am also going to Pitt next year (got off the waitlist 5/12). I'm pretty excited; although Pittsburgh's not my number one choice in terms of location, the school has made a pretty awesome impression on me. Anyway, I kind of just wanted to get a gauge on who's going, how definite that is, and where/when/how you're going to go about looking for housing and roommates and all that? (seeing as I missed the second look weekend, I feel a little more lost ...) I know there's the Pitt website too, but I just wanted to get your feedback here ...

oh yeah. How was second look weekend for those who went?

and how is housing for Pitt students? I wanna get into Ruskin but want to know if it's such a longshot that I should fly out to look for apts. 😛

Also if anyone knows the procedure for applying that would be great.

sorry for all these questions! what a lot to catch up on. 🙂

I wouldn't do Ruskin... it is quite expensive for what you get, and there probably aren't many apartments left. There are a bunch of nice buildings in Oakland which are comparably priced to Ruskin, and are nicer - they're just a couple of blocks further. Also, Shadyside and Squirrel Hill have good places even cheaper - especially if you come out and look around. It won't take long to find a place - there is a ton of housing out here, and the choices are pretty good.
If you want to live in Oakland, I would recommend the King Edward or Royal York - lots of classmates in both. They're too expensive for me, and I wouldn't want to live in Oakland, but the price is still not that bad, particularly if you get a two bedroom.

I agree, at least about the King Edward. However, I would suggest living in Shadyside or Squirrel Hill. Oakland, IMO, is not exactly the safest place to live. Definitely stay away from Oak Hill apartments, which look beautiful, but are in the Hill District, one of the worst neighborhoods in Pittsburgh. Shadyside and Squirrel Hill are MUCH nicer than Oakland.

I'll be at Pitt this fall! Good luck on the apartment searches. PM me if you have questions-I went to Pitt for undergrad.

Yet another question:
Do students need a car for any school-related reasons? any other reasons why I'd want a car?

There are no school related things you would need a car for in the first two years - for the ambulatory care course they either pick a place on the bus line or pair you up with a driver if you don't have a car. If you live in Shadyside or Squirrel Hill, it can be nice to have a car, but not really necessary. If you live in Oakland it is fairly easy to live without a car. I can't think of many places you can't get to by bus.
If you want to buy a car, you could just go for a cheap deal just to drive around town - I sometimes go more than a week without ever moving mine so it isn't really worth buying a new car, you probably won't use it enough to be worth it.

what about the last two years?

thanks for all your helpful info 🙂

sunflower, the bus system in Pittsburgh is more than sufficient for about everything you could possibly need. Having a car is more a matter of convenience, than of necessity. Parking is tricky in Oakland, too.

well now I'm officially part of the club! just called Linda this morning 🙂

I am not certain about the last 2 years, but can't imagine that there would be many times when you will need one. Most of the hospitals are in Oakland, or are on the bus line (actually can't think of one that isn't on several bus lines), and if you go to a private practice, they will probably do the same kind of thing they do for the ambulatory care class - ie put you somewhere on the bus line if you don't have a car.
A car is nice to have, but again, I wouldn't spend much on one because you will be surprised at how infrequently you drive - why have an expensive car sitting outside doing nothing.

Two quick points about cars and buses. Although they do try to accomodate people without cars it is possible to be stuck out in the boonies for ambulatory care during the first two years even if you tell them you don't have a car. During third year, especially during ambulatroy care I definitely needed a car to get to all my sites.

As far as buses go, there has been talk recently about serious cut backs in service. As things stand now, all you have to do is flash your student ID and your ride is free (even from the airport).

Hey Guys,
I got an email from Curtiss saying he was fairly confident I would get in off the waitlist within 10 days. I am supposed to send in my $500 deposit to BU by June 1st, but I would take Pitt in a nanosecond over BU. Should I call the office tomorrow and see if they can offer me a formal admission, or is that pushing it? Also, Does anyone know about the student housing situation? Is there a list or is it available to all 1st years? Also, does anyone know the $$ and what exactly you get (i.e. studio, one bedroom).

I forgot,
if I already have a car, should I bring it? Do most of the apartments in the area come with parking, or is parking just too much to deal with?

If you already have a car, I would bring it. Unless you end up living in Oakland in a place with no parking. My classmates that live in complexes in Oakland often pay about 60+ to park in their complex parking garage. In Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, etc you can park on the street free (in Shadyside there is a 20$/yr charge for a parking sticker - also in some other neighborhoods, but not S.H.)
I guess it all depends on how far away you live, and how easy or hard it will be to get the car here.

Dr. Curtiss is the Associate Dean of admissions

physics MD:

Did that e-mail appear out of nowhere or did you solicit it?

As for answering your BU question, yes, send the deposit to secure a spot...never work on fairly confident. if it doesn't happen for whatever reason and BU was your 2nd choice or only other choice, you;d be without any spot. If you do get off in 10 days, then simply loose the deposti and withdraw. I know that sounds harsh and losing 500 bucks may seem like a lot, but it's peanuts it light of having a definite place held for you at a medical school. Plus, BU is no junk school. It residency placements are quite good esp. at the top ranked Boston hospitals... I mean to say that poeple (physicians and acadmeics in medicine) in Boston know and like BU's program. In fact, it is well know that entrance into BU is one of the toughest (like GW) because so many poeple have it as their backup or 1st choice coming from the East Coast. Depending on where you want to end up after medical school, BU is not a bad place to end up if Pitt. faulters. Good luck!

Same thing with me; but I got the call on 5/19... Still no letter in Cali...

Good question Dr2l00 . . .

PhysicsMD, why did Dean Curtiss contact you through email to tell you that you would get accepted off the waitlist? I'm just curious - I'm on the waitlist too.

Come on waitlist, keep on rollin'!

tugo,

I got the call 5/22. Called them back 5/27 and said I was going to Pitt. I emailed Linda to ask for some sort of written confirmation of acceptance before withdrawing from other schools, and she emailed back that my acceptance letter was mailed that afternoon. I'm expecting it to arrive next week. Since then I've been getting a stream of emails from Pitt about $ aid, welcome, etc. If you got the same I think you don't need to worry.

see you at Pitt! 😀

Snail mail is notoriously slow coming out of Pittsburgh. So, I wouldn't be too concerned.

I got the phone call last monday (19th). It took 4 days for the letter to get from Pittsburgh to me (NJ). Don't worry, its coming 🙂
