either I am an idiot or this map is completely incomprehensible. how do you know what lines run on what streets?! 😕

The map will help you find, in general, which bus routes run through which neighborhoods. I would then narrow it down by going to the port authority website and pulling up individual bus routes (eg 54C, 71C, 71A), which will have detailed information on where they stop, times they run, etc.

If your still having trouble let me know the address your looking at and I'll help you out...

As of now, I'm going to Pitt but I need some advice . . .If you got off the waitlist at Vandy, would you change your mind? Thanks for any help.

Hey All,

This will serve to rescue this thread from the bowels of SDN and also to finally be able to say that I am headed to Pitt next year. After being nearly positive I was not getting off the list, I finally got the call from Linda on the 17th. I am really pumped about next year and am looking forward to meeting you all in August.

I can't go down to Pitt until July 11th to look for a place, is that way too late? My friend who did his undergrad at CMU says there is always housing I just might not get the greatest deal in the world. Also do people recommend using a realtor or just searching classifieds and whatnot? Thanks.

congrats on Pitt!  where ya from?

I just flew to Pittsburgh from SFO the weekend before last to find an apt. I think if you go in July there may be apartments available, just as when I went there were apts available for July, though aug apts are going now so when you arrive the remaining ones may not be ideal (expensive or cheap and dingy), but who knows you may luck out.

I strongly advise you to check classified ads and call for appointments a few days in advance of going to Pittsburgh. I did this and saw 7 apts a day, so that saved me a lot of time.

good luck 🙂

Thanks sunflower,

I live just outside of Boston, got my undergrad degree in Boston, and grew up in around Boston too, so I am looking forward to a change of scenery. You are probably right about the apartment thing, but I figure if the place is bad I can move after first year. I will definetly check out the classifieds. Thanks for your help.

I am now official at Pitt, since I now know that the Case waitlist will not be moving this year. I will be living in the Ambassador in N. Oakland on Centre Ave (assuming I get approved). I can't wait to meet you all 😉

Does anyone know what the orientation schedule is, or where I can find it???

White Coat Ceremony is the 10th of August and orientation starts the 11th. I would check with student affairs for a more detailed sched. but I imagine that it might not be finalized yet.
Also, to anyone going to look for housing. I would highly highly recommend driving street to street in whatever neighberhood you want to live in and looking for "For Rent" signs. When I was finding a place about a month ago, there were a ton of open apartments that weren't listed in the classifieds. just a thought and good luck to everyone finding housing.
also just in case anyone doesn't know
www.pittmed.pitt.edu
is the student web page with boards for those looking for housing/roommates/etc.
I look forward to meeting and getting to know all of you. cheers

Yeah same here! I just found my apt in Shadyside earlier this week and I am starting to get really excited! Everyone is telling me to enjoy the summer, which I am, but I can't wait until I get to Pitt (both the city and the school).

See everyone in August!

dmbpremed,

I know exactly how you feel. This summer feels like a countdown to the start of medschool, only instead of being nervous and worried, I am excited. I haven't felt this way since junior high or elementry school when I was excited for school to start so I could see my friends everyday. I can't wait to move down to Pitt and compare what life there is like compared to Boston (one of the most overrated cities in the country, in my opinion). See you in August!

Hey fellow MS1ers,

I just signed the one-year lease starting July 1st for a two-bedroom apartment in Shadyside (located on 5th Ave.) that has two bedrooms, one bathroom, one big living room, dining room, and kitchen. I am currently looking for another male medical student to room in the other bedroom. The place has bedrooms of unequal areas. I will be living in the larger one room bedroom. You will be living in the smaller one room bedroom. The smaller bedroom has enough room for a twin bed and room to jump off the bed feet first (the same size as the one you used in undergrad), a computer desk, a dresser, and then a middle area that is just empty space. The dimensions are about 9 X11.3 feet with a chunk of 3 X 1.6 feet missing in the corner (I did not measure the closet or window but they are big). The rent is actually $725 (the monthly rent includes heat, electricity, water, and sewer ). The laundry room is downstairs and is coin operated. However, we will have to pay for cable TV (if you want to get the higher channels like CNN or the weather channel ?EI actually do not watch that much TV myself), DSL or cable broadband (they have either), and telephone service (a landline phone). For the smaller room the rent is $337 per month. The place is very clean, carpeted. As for parking, it is in the back and it is first come first serve (there are no reserved places). However, if it does get crowded, you can get a parking sticker to park on the side streets for 20 dollars a year. I plan to move in August the first from California.

As for the location, the place is in Shadyside on 5th Ave. The apartment complex is back away from 5th Ave. As you may already have known, the buslines frequently run on 5th Ave. to and from the Med School (actually the bus gets off at Children's). It takes 8 minutes on the bus if there is no heavy traffic. The place is quiet.

I am a laid back roommate who is down to earth, funny, and mature. I am basically a low maintenance person who can converse on a large number of topics and is easy to get along with. For the most part I do not expect to be in the apartment in the day and I try and do my studying on the campus so you might only see me at night. I also keep the noise down if my roommate is studying as I can use headphones. As for music I can deal with most music (expect for hard punk). I actually listen to Rock, Top 40, Classical, Oldies, and Alternative. I will do my share of the dishes and keep the common areas clean and I am looking for someone who can do the same.

Now for the extra stuff that is cool to just have some stuff in common (cool, but not necessary). I like to do outdoors stuff (like hike or explore areas of the city or wilderness). I also can carry on intelligent and interesting conversation about politics, religion, or the news while expressing my viewpoint and yet respecting others. As for what I watch on TV (if I did have time) it would be Scrubs, Simpsons, and Frasier. I also watch Leno, 60 Minutes, and the evening news on occasion. I also think that museums are cool and you should always be able to expand what you know. I also follow college sports (I always root for my alma mater (I think most people feel obligated) Cal Berkeley).

If you are interested in the place and think that I would make a good roommate just drop me an email at <[email protected]>. Hey, even if you do not want the place, just email me to say hi. In two weeks or so I should be able to post pictures of the place (really just an empty place). I think that this post has a lot of detail and if you want more, just say so.

Later.😎

Hey Green,
Great that you found a place and for so cheap. I already have a place (very close to yours) but was wondering whether you were around Berkeley this summer. My girlfriend and I (who are both in the 07 class) are here this summer and I know a couple of other classmates of ours are in the Bay Area. I was thinking about maybe trying to put together a little something for the Bay Area folks. let me know. Also, if there any other Bay Area Pitt people, shoot me an e-mail. cheers.

Hi greenatp and indiamacbean,

I am in SF (also a fellow BEAR 😀) so a get-together would be awesome! it would be nice to know faces when I set foot on campus.

sunflower79 🙂

Hey indianmacbean and sunflower79,
I am unfortunately not going to be in Berkeley since I am not from the Bay Area. That would have been really cool though to hang out..but you can be assured that we can hang out in August. I actually have already met "Gabes" in person since I am in Pittsburgh for the week. I also know another person from a long time ago who is going to be in the class.
Have you guys figured out your furniture arrangement? I think that I am going to try and not have my place IKEAfied if possible. Do you know of any places to get cheap furniture that looks decent?

Indianmacbean,
Although we have not met, I think that I may know you (or maybe not)...did you take the MCAT Princeton Review (Spring 2002) and MCB 130L (just this last spring)?

Thanks a bunch and I look forward to seeing my Berkeley bears at orientation. I know that for sure that at least we have 4 people coming from Berkeley..do you know how Berkeley students are going in totality?

GreenATP

GreenATP-
I actualy graduated from Brown in 2001 and have spent the last two years working at UCSF doing developmental neuro-genetics research. I'm from Berkeley originally and thought that it'd be a good place to come and relax for a while before starting med. school. Anyhow, sorry we can't meet you this summer but I look forward to seeing you in August. Re. furniture, I seem to remember in the back of my brain that the Survival guide mentioned some places to get cheap furniture. check that out. I know the admissions office has extra copies if you need one.
Sunflower (and other in the Bay Area)-
It'd be great to meet up before we all head east. Maybe sometime in the 2nd week of july? anybody whose interested, my e-mail is [email protected]

Hey guys,
well anyone still on the waitlist has hope. I just got my SUNY Downstate admissions letter in the mail yesterday, so a spot at Pitt will be opening up soon. You all seem like such great people, I was really psyched to go to Pitt but alas, I don't think my fiance who lives in NY would like that too much. Good luck to all of you!

For those of you already there,

Is there a bank with a branch at or near Sciafe Hall? Which bank are you guys going with?

PNC bank has ATMs all over the hospitals, and has many branches nearby...

Hey, people. Anyone in Pittsburgh interested in a little meeting and greeting this weekend the 11th-13th? I'm in Cleveland now, but I'll most likely be coming to Pittsburgh on the weekend to begin the setup of my place. Not only am I excited to meet some folks, but Friday is my birthday!

Anyone up for it?

Hey all, anyone looking for a roomate? I've had some drama in my life and haven't been able to get to PGH to find a place yet. I'll likely fly out there next week to find a place... Anyhow. Lemme know.

C

Hey uclachris or any other incoming first year pitt med students out there,

I am currently looking for a roommate myself. I am looking for a place within close walking distance to the medical school, but unfortunately, I will not have the opportunity to come up and check out any places until I move there during the first week of August. If you are interested, send me a personal message, and we can exchange contact information then. Thanks.

So, like an idiot I wait til today to book my airfare to PIT even though I knew ahead of time what date I would be there.

Yikes! The prices...

Anyone find anything around $200 (from CA)?

Argh... they did raise the prices... I had found a few from LAX-O'Hare-PGH for 200 ish... but poof.

How are you guys moving your stuff x-country?

C

UCLAChris,
First off, I just wanted to let you know that my girlfriend Megan hung out with you during your interview visit. She read your postings and is pretty sure that it is you and is really excited that you're coming to Pitt. I look forward to meeting you. Her e-mail is [email protected] if you want to send her a message.
After a bunch of searching around and calling, I think that ABF U-Pack is the cheapest shipping option. It is certainly cheaper than U-Haul (once you figure in gas). You might also check craigslist LA to see if someone is driving across the country and willing to move some stuff for you. Also, I heard that Amtrak shipping is really really cheap but they won't ship any furniture. good luck with that.
when is everyone getting to Pittsburgh? I think we're going to try and get there around the 1st to get ready, unpack, try to make some sense of the crazy topography. will anyone else be around then?
cheers

I just saw in the paper that ATA has cheap direct tickets to Pittsburgh at lease from SF, I'm not sure about LA. They were 114 each way. cheers.

anyone know when is a good time to kiss the waitlist hopes good bye?????

thanks indiamacbean! I will check that out presently.

I will be in Pgh around 8/1, barring weird circumstances 🙂

Hey guys,

I just got my place (on the corner of Walnut and Shadyside), so things are slowly coming along. I hung out with my cousin who graduated from there two years ago, and in his words, "the hardest thing about Pitt Med is getting in," which was good to hear.

I don't move in until the 1st of August either, so if anyone's going to be around then, lemme know through PM.

For you Cali people:

You might be able to find cheap fares through America West, if you're willing to connect through Vegas or Phoenix (the hubs). I live in Nevada, and I was able to get a good deal on AWA from Vegas.

hey everyone,
it's been great reading these posts- thanks for sharing info on pittsburgh life. i just got accepted off the waitlist at the end of june- yippee!!!!

i'm planning on flying to pittsburgh sometime this month to find an apartment. how much time did you guys give yourselves to find a place? seems like i'll be looking really late. i'm hoping to find a 1 br or studio, maybe in shadyside or squirrel hill and preferably through an owner.

any advice would be great- excited to meet you all in august 🙂

HAHAHAHAHAHAH
that's the funniest bunch of B.S. i've ever read. don't believe that about any medical school for a second. i don't care where you went to undergrad, med school is harder.

hey batman,

I would tend to agree with your cousin....and your apartment is on the corner of walnut and shady in shadyside 😉

Hey tonem,

My bad, I wasn't paying attention. I'm on the corner of Walnut and S Highland IN Shadyside. It seems like a good neighborhood with a lot to do.

And choker,

I think my cousin told me this to allay my own fears about going into med school after taking time off. I just posted the comment to provide someone's opinion on the matter. Trust me, I'm just as excited and worried as the next person about starting, and I'm not taking anything for granted.

Holy coincidence Batman,

When I first moved to Pittsburgh I lived on the corner of Highland and Walnut!!!

I will be living near the shadyside giant eagle 🙂

Hey guys, if you're flying to Pgh and haven't booked your tickets do it NOW! It's near the 2 week deadline if you wanna be in town early august. Tickets are still cheap (from CA under $200 a piece on travelocity 😀 I looove travelocity 😍).

can't wait!!!!!   I can't believe there's something to do every night of orientation week! anyone going to the pirates game? I probably won't because it's the last night my family will be in town and I'm not a huge baseball fan...

sunflower 🙂

I am planning on going to every evening event if time allows. I figure it will be a good opportunity to meet people and I don't really have anything to do at night anyways/ The only thing I am not planning on doing is the white water rafting.

Hey all,
I know that this is kind of a long shot but does anybody really love to mountain bike and want to go down to Snowshoe,WV before orientation? Snowshoe has some of the best riding in the country and I don't know if I'll have the time/motivation once school starts. I have a truck with a bike rack and was thinking about leaving from pgh around the 6th for a day or two. Also, if anyone is interested in checking out rides around Pittsburgh before school starts let me know. cheers,

Wassap? I don't know about the trip to Snowshoe (no $), but I might be up for a few rides around Pitt. My mountain bike is kind of old, but still holds up pretty well.

Doctor O,
That would be cool with me. I know that there is decent riding as close as Frick Park and I'm sure with a bit of exploration we could find some good stuff. Pittsburgh was voted one of the top five cities to live for biking by Bike magazine a couple of years ago. I didn't choose Pitt based on the biking but its a definite plus. I'll be getting to Pittsburgh around the 1st. cheers

Alll of the hills ought to make it interesting. Will you be riding to school at all? I remember reading somewhere that we have to register our bicycles.

I'd like to ride to school from our place (Walnut and Summerlea) but it'll sort of depend on whether I can find a safe place to lock it. I don't really like to leave my bike outside for fear that it'll get stripped for parts (like my bike in Providence,RI did). Maybe they have an inside bike storage room somewhere. I might also just get or build a crappy bike that's so ugly no one would steal it.

I definitely wouldn't ride a bike regularly on City streets in Pittsburgh, although I did have some classmates that did ride to school from Shadyside. Freddie Fu was hit by a car while riding his bike and one of my classmates' husband was hit (intentionally) while riding his bike. Yinzers are horrible drivers! (Worse than anything I've seen even in Boston to date.) The problem is they are 100% unpredictable and they think they own the road. They also believe that bicyclists belong on the sidewalk.

I stopped counting the number of times I was almost hit crossing roads with green lights while running.

haha well I thought Pgh drivers were way better than drivers in San Francisco!

btw I hear Freddie Fu is applying for chair of sports med here at ucsf... there are so many sports med ppl here from pitt! Must be a great program.

what's a yinzer? 😕

Sunflower,

I moved to Pittsburgh from the Bay Area. Trust me, they are much worse in Pittsburgh. They are definitely not as aggressive but beware if you are walking or bike riding. They absolutely will not yield to pedestrians. I've seen people (on a regular basis) go around a mother pushing a baby stroller through a crosswalk at 40 mph. If someone does yield, they usually have California plates. The corollary (which is pretty funny) is that pedestrians will walk out into the street suddenly without even looking. I'm amazed there aren't 2-3 pedestrian fatalities a day. The infuriating thing after awhile is that you can't predict what other cars on the road will do...be especially wary getting on the freeway...it's not uncommon for them to STOP at the end of the onramp. But other than that Pittsburgh isn't bad.

To answer your question, an "Yinzer" is a native Pittsburgher. It comes from their particular variant of you'all (Texans help me out on the spelling). As in what are yinz gonna do tonight. The also tend to drop "to be" in sentences ie: The carpet needs cleaned [sic]. Don't worry as part of your orientation Dr. Thompson gives an excellent orientation of the history and culture of Pittsburgh (Hell With the Lid Off).

You'll have fun. Pittsburgh and Pitt are both great places and I actually miss both.
