EDIT 12/21/18: This thread is being retired, as the majority of posts (>80 pages) pertain to the old MCAT that is no longer relevant to current applicants. You can find the current "Should I Retake" thread here: Forum Members - Should I Retake the MCAT?

For those of you who are trying to figure out whether you should re-take, this is the thread for you. Post your dilemma here if you want advice from other SDN folks. Please note that you should take the opinions you get from SDN as one source of advice; you would be wise to also consult your premed advisor before making this decision. Here is my personal advice for those considering whether to re-take:

Definitely DO retake:
-if you scored below a 24. Some allopathic schools will screen out students with scores lower than 24, which is about the mean score for all test-takers.
-if you had some kind of major problem during the test that affected your performance (ex. you started puking or running a 102 degree temperature)
-if you took the test without completing the four pre-reqs (one year each of biology, chemistry, physics, and organic) and/or without studying for it
-if you left large numbers of questions blank

Definitely do NOT retake:
-if you scored a 30 or better, especially if all of your individual section scores were an 8 or better
-if your section subscores (the numerical ones) are all good, but you didn't perform well on the writing section (the letter score)

Gray area-it's not obvious what to do:
-if you scored 30+ but with one section below an 8
-if you had some minor nuisances (ex. a noisy test room) during the test and you're not sure if it affected your performance
-if you studied thoroughly for the test and you scored within the range of your practice exams, but your score is in the middle range (24-29)

I'm not trying for IVY league or anything... a SUNY would be great. And I don't think I'll improve much if at all if I took it again. I was relieved with this score. Also, I'll only have ~1 month to study and I'm working full-time.

But I don't know...should I retake??

You have nothing below an 8, which really seems to be the hard deck in the MSAR, even for the top ten. The one thing you see in those schools is nothing below an 8 in any section.

A seven is what gets you screened out. Speaking of sevens, I think that I will be lucky to see one in BS from the Jun 13th exam.

I originally took the MCAT on May 23rd and ended up with a score of 28S (PS 8, VR 9, BS 11). I scheduled a retake on 8-5 and have submitted my AMCAS with intent to retake. Just wondering if this was a wise decision or not? I am fairly sure that I can do much better on my second exam. I have a 4.00 G.P.A., awesome volunteer and leadership experiences and extracurriculars, plus loads of healthcare experience. The MCAT is the weakest point of my application. Is it true that my file will be ignored until early September when I get my August scores back? Will I not be receiving secondaries until then?

Thanks!

My understanding, as someone in a similar position, is that if you notify AMCAS/TMDSAS (and consequently, your schools) of your intention to retake the exam, your app might very well get set aside until your final set of scores are in. A few Texas MD schools have told me that rejections are not finalized so early in the cycle, so a post-first review declaration of another MCAT could effectively earn you a second review later in the season (if that makes sense), but your mileage may vary.

Wish you the best. I know it sucks, feeling like your MCAT is holding you back. I'm batting a 3.93, great EC/other stuff, mostly well-reviewed PS... and a 25R. 🙁

What do you guys think?
30Q
PS - 12, VR - 7, BS - 11.
I am pretty sure i want to retake, i had some bad experiences while taking including my monitor getting unplugged by the person next to me making me not only freak out, but also lose some time. I was averaging around 35 and have never gone below a 9 in verbal before this date. Although a 30 isn't bad, I am pretty sure that i can easily do better. I am hoping to retake on July 18th seeing as my science information is still tere and it would really just be to get another shot at it.

Am i being stupid, should i stick with my score and apply, or just take it because i am pretty sure i will do better?

For what it's worth from someone with a 7/9/9, I'd say that a 12 and 11 in the sciences might be a little tricky to keep equal or better. If you're sure you can avoid stepping backwards in those two while you try to fix your VR, then hey, by all means.

(It could be worse. You could be me, trying to fix each section. :] )

Yeah, i am nervous that they are going to look down upon my 7. My gpa is a 3.85/3.81. I have tons of research, leadership positions, and over 1000 hrs of outside volunteering, but only about a year of hospital volunteering.

I took the MCATs twice, and I'm applying for Fall 2009. I don't know if I
should retake the exam this August. Here are my scores:

first time:
B10 P11 V06

Second time:
B10 P08 V10

My GPA is a 3.7
Please, I need urgent help! 🙁

Your GPA may be the thing that keeps you out. I do not think that you should retake. You should just apply and if you do not get accepted then do a post bacc to increase your GPA.

..24 year old mexican from CA

at least i showed improvement on the exam. I was really hoping to get at least a 7VR & 10BS.

I just got my MCAT today: 29Q (8PS 10VR 11BS) and am not sure what I should do. My GPA is 3.74 and my science is a little above a 3.6. Real good EC's and LOR's. I am a NY state resident and would love to get into one of the four state schools in NY. The 8 in PS scares me, but I really feel there is no way I could put myself through studying for that monster again and even if I did I don't know how much I could improve my score. If I am going to stick with the 29, I would like to get my AMCAS sent in early. What do you guys think?

Hi i got a 12BS/10PS/9 Verbal 31O with a 3.94 GPA NJ residence. a year of volunteering/research. I was really hoping to be competitive at a elite school. Should I retake?

should i retake? i want to apply to schools like nyu or ucsd and bu. i got a 14BS, 12VR and 8 in PS. I usually score much higher in PS (around an 11 or 12) but i usually score lower in BS (around a 12). Do i still have a shot at these schools??

hey

i have 28p 9 ps 8 vr 11 bs.
gpa 3.3 (because first semester gpa was 2.2- it's been improving since then)
but im an international student.

im signed up for a retake on august 7th. im pretty confident that i can do better, but im worried that waiting that much longer to apply will decrease my chances more than just using my 28 to apply right now.
what do you think?
thanks!

Most "elite" schools now have a median of 37. If you are hoping to be competitive at these schools, a 31 probably won't do it unless you are a URM (not that you can't get in with that score, but it would take much luck).

Your overall score is fine for those schools. However, the 8 in PS may be detrimental to your application. If you think you can maintain the 34 while increasing the balance you should consider it.

i got a 27-S
with a 6 in PS.
the 27 is my average overall score...
but my average PS was more around an 8.
im URM with good stats and the rest of my app is in order.
if i retake, will that reduce my viability by having to wait till mid-august before scores come out? not to mention the possibility of scoring lower.

Also interested in replies to this since I'm facing a similar issue. 01/2008 MCAT, 9/9/6/S; 05/2008, 7/9/9/R.

FWIW, most people have advised me to reschedule but not yet announce that to TMDSAS/schools to see if I score some interviews with my application as it is.

If you scored at your average I would not advise retaking. Congratulations, it is an accomplishment in itself in having the composure to perform under pressure as well as you did during practice. As a URM, I feel your stats will be sufficient glancing at the schools listed on your mdapplicants.

Hey all, i appreciate all the advice you'd be willing to offer! 😀

GPA: 3.83
Sci GPA: 3.81

MCAT: 29S
PS: 10
VR: 8 👎
BS: 11

i worked for over a month straight and thought i was on top of my game for this. I'm wondering if i should retake it in late aug...i have a lot of ECs and a few medical volunteering...great LoRs and have been in undergrad research for almost 2 years...i'm looking to apply to any really good school (i know this is picky..."beggars can't be choosers" and whatnot...) i'm really wanting somewhere in cali...UCLA? UCSD? (big shots, i know)...

opinions? Greatly Appreciated 😀

What were your AAMC practice scores?

my AAMC ones were in the high 20's...highest was 30...lowest was 27...so i guess this 29S was pretty much average for me

I just got my score:

31 R
9 PS
9 VR
13 BS

3.88 undergraduate GPA
3.95 science GPA

Average AAMC practice tests:

10/11 PS
9 VR
11 BS

SwimB86, mabuhay415:

Both of you scored similar to your composite AAMC practice tests. Individual sections varied. This is not unlikely, there is an aspect of chance (or luck depending on how you see it) during each test sitting. It is possible that during an additional sitting luck would be in your favor in all three sections and net you a higher score yet the odds are you would score a similar composite with a different distribution. Both of you have solid GPA's and MCAT scores which can certainly gain you admissions to allopathic medical schools. If you retook the odds would be either -2 or +2 of your current scores (considering how close you scored to your AAMC averages). I wouldn't advise retaking.

yeah...i think i should retake though. despite scoring near my average.
i will just study my butt off and hope for the best.
i feel like its really my only chance with MD schools.

mainly cause i got a 6 twice in a row in the PS.
nail in the coffin.

My average on practice tests was around 35.

The real thing: 10VR 8PS 14BS OWS for a total of 32O. I am scared for the PS and the writing.

I just received my score from the May 31st MCAT.

PS: 10
BS: 9

I recently graduated from Villanova University with a Chemical Engineering Degree. My overall GPA was a 3.39 and my senior year GPA was a 3.75. My resume includes volunteered clinical experience, biotechnology research, and community service. I plan on applying to the lower tier M.D. schools. On practice tests I had been scoring a 9 or 10 on the VR section. Should I retake? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How bad is an M?

profile: V11/P10/B12; 3.56 gpa, ivy grad, 2.5 years medical research experience, 1 year clinical volunteering (6 hr/wk)

Writing will not matter. The PS could be a black eye for your application. How do the rest of your numbers look and to where are you hoping to apply?

29O
VR: 9

PS: 10

GPA: 3.70
Science: 3.72

EC's: Medical internship in Mexico last summer, translator at medical clinic, started org. to raise money for world hunger on campus, bball coach, etc.

(Side note: My LOC's are strong but are mostly from internship/work experiences. None of my science ones are likely to be very good because I didn't know the prof's that well. Are they important enough to put the hold on applying for a year in order to "get to know" some better?)

What do you think, should I wait a year and retake?

Your help is greatly appreciated, thanks for your opinions! 🙂

my practice tests this time were: 25, 27, 29, 30, 31. I want to submit my AMCAS app. but I'm terrified. I'm a Colorado resident, a masters student in neurobiology, volunteer/shadow experience, good LOR.....should I submit and see? Or should I sign up for the August mcat? Or wait a year??? I'm so upset but lost!! I have a 4.0, but get horrible test anxiety and not sure how much better I'll get.

thanks!!

You certainly could argue either way for retaking. Your gpa is excellent and Florida is a decent state to have residency. An 8 can get you screened but not in all cases. However, scoring 3 points below your average, to me, indicates that you have some potential for improvement and lesser odds of degeneration. I would retake. Even if you score a 32 again, at least it may be more balanced.

Another tough call. It will be difficult to get into any MD school with a 26 regardless of the rest of your application (excluding unusual circumstances). You've taken the MCAT twice, one year apart. Do you think you'll do better if you retake in August? If you have doubts I would hold off on a retake.
I'm guessing you prepped well for both attempts so do you know why you scored the way you did?
You really can't do any harm with a retake but it is probably best that if you plan to put yourself through the ordeal a third time you change something up from the previous two tries.

Hey! We are score buddies (almost)....I got a 28S (8 PS 9 VR 11 BS). My mcat score is the weakest part of my application because I have a 4.0 G.P.A. and loads of healthcare, extracurricular and volunteer experience. Therefore, I am retaking my mcat but I have submitted all of my applications already! Hope that helps and good luck!🙂

Bleh... just got my results:
25O with:
7 PS
9 BS
9 VR

I have an cumulative undergrad GPA of 3.63. Non-science 3.85, science 3.3ish with a couple more bio classes to go before graduation. My EC's and honors are: National Society of Collegiate Scholars, AED Pre-med Honors and secretary, Honors program and thesis, 1 semester of research, 200 hours continuing hospital volunteering over 2 years(with another 312 scheduled service hours for next year, both in hospital and out), 2 years of Resident Assistant.... I was planning on applying mostly to DO programs.

I've scheduled an Aug. 5th retake, but I'm not sure... any advice?

Forgot the Kaplan practice test scores (in chronological order): 18, 15, 21, 22, 25, 28, 29, 27. During the semester I didn't have much time to study, but I studied about 120 hours from May 5-29

Hi all

I have a 30M (10PS, 11V, 9BS) and am scheduled to retake it in August, but after some medical issues this summer I am having some trouble getting back into studying and am not very confident that I can do better now. I know a 30 is pretty borderline. I am most worried about the 9 in bio, because I know that is an important section. My undergrad science GPA was only average, but I have just completed an all science master's program with a 3.85 GPA. Do you think that will help balance the 9? This is my second time applying. I applied right out of undergrad and had no interviews. But I have improved my application with the master's program and great extracurriculars, just haven't got around to taking the MCAT again. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

i just sent a PM to a couple of SDNers whose advice i highly regard...and i linked my thread in another thread. anyways, i made a poll in the "what are my chances" forum and i'd like as many people's opinion ASAP. You just need to cast your vote on the poll...i only have like 12 hours to make the decision.

Thanks. I think I'm going to submit my app. to both MD and DO programs AND retake in August. All the schools I'm applying to send out secondaries-so I can send in retake scores with that.
I think you're right about switching things up this time--I just don't know how!! The first time I took a princeton review course, the second time I studied at home w/PR books, kaplan books, and reread my chem. and physics textbooks, and 3 aamc practice tests. Maybe I should do straight sample passages for the next month?? Is there anyone who has taken this test for a 3rd or 4th time????

Sorry, I overlooked your distribution. A 6 in the PS is too low to be realistically competitive at MD schools. If you want a stronger chance then you probably should retake. However, if DO is satisfactory then you may not need to do so. Best of luck.

A lot of these posts are getting very "What are my chances?"-like. In here, please let's stick to questions pertaining only to MCAT retakes. There are appropriate threads in PA and PO to ask the rest of those questions... Danke.

I took the May 27th MCAT and scored ok but at the lower end of the top schools I'm interested in. Does it make more sense to study up and do well on the August 22nd 2008 test or is that too late for secondaries. If it doesn't look well come winter break I'll spend a few months prepping for the spring 2009 test and expect to score higher.
So should I be spending time on my secondary essays or would scoring a few points higher really help this time around?

Took the MCAT May 27th.

Pulled a 29R (10PS/09VR/10BS)

I have scheduled to retake Aug. 22nd, but I will be sending in my application by mid-July.

The highest I scored on a practice test was a 30 (3x), but I took about 13 tests in 16 days and I only had a day or two off of practice tests before taking the real deal.

My GPA is 3.7, and I'm a Florida Resident.

Planning on applying to all the FL schools, George Washington, Drexel, U of Minn, and Mayo.

I have about 50+ hours of shadowing (with many, many different fields) no research, and about 1,000+ (it's probably more, I'm just being conservative) of Community Service/Leadership, including social work in other states and countries.

Ideas?

30 three times as a high out of 13 practice tests and you scored a balanced 29 on real thing... Are you just hoping to get lucky on 8/22?

i think that unless you start cranking out higher practice test scores, there's not all that much point to a retake. if 30 is your high, i'm assuming 29 is already towards the upper end of your practice range. i think taking it again and scoring worse or messing up the 10/9/10 balance you got going on would only hurt your chances.

also, i may be wrong about this, but i believe if you indicate that you're retaking they'll hold your app until they get the new scores in, which won't be until late september. something to keep in mind.

if you're deadset on taking it again, you have 1.5 months to figure out what is preventing you from getting that 30+. is it that you just don't know some of the content? or that you run out of time? or that you know the content but have trouble applying it to the random experiments they throw in? work on whatever you say yes to.

Took the MCAT May 27th.

I have about 50+ hours of shadowing (with many, many different fields) no research, and about 1,000+ (it's probably more, I'm just being conservative) of Community Service/Leadership, including social work in other states and countries.

Ideas?
