Hey Jessica I am in the same boat and was wondering what made you choose Stony over Buff...congrats on getting into both and also check your PM if you don't feel like replying here!

Nooo! My cell phone died hours ago and I'm in lab tonight until 9:30!!! Won't be able to charge until after 10. Did anyones status change or did you just get a call?

Could anyone share their interview experience? What kind of questions do they ask? Any helpful tips would be appreciated.

Hey guys,

I was accepted via phone call last night, but decided to withdraw to attend buffalo. So one more spot has opened up!

Best of Luck

I called stony brook they gave out all there first round acceptances yesterday

all Patricia Berry told me was that the acceptances were all done yesterday and that she has not been told to reject anyone and that she has not heard anything about a waitlist.. so far we are all just going to be under review

Hopefully you guys hear something soon. I also turned down my spot, so hopefully those that really wanted it will hear something.

This is sad. I am so heartbroken I was gunning for stony brook since forever. 🙁. O well time to move on and hopefully anything can happen after the first round of acceptances is through. :xf:

Anyone know where I can find the specializing rates/placement for Stony?
Thanks

I believe it is 100% or so they said at my interview. However, most of these are GPR (obv because NY requires 1 year residency regardless). Moreover, the specific placements were in the folder they gave us at the interview. Most were GPR/AEGD though and I think i read like 2-3 oral surgery and 2-3 ortho...don't take my word on it though! check your folder!

I got a call from Dr. Paquette on Monday. He said "we're still enthusiastic about your application" and "this will be a happy week for you and your family" but I didn't get a call on Dec. 1 or 2 saying I've been offically accepted. What do you guys think?

I got the same call and I am same situation as your in...didn't receive a call on the 1st or 2nd. Probably means waitlist ?

Congrats everyone on their acceptances!! If you have not heard from Stony and are still interested, make sure you remember that it doesn't hurt to e-mail and/or call and express your interest. A good handful of people in my class got accepted in the spring.. don't lose hope!

Hurrayyy. Congrats to those of you who made the cut, now make sure you bring your A game.

I got in too! sorry it took me so long to post this haha! did anyone make a facebook group or something? im excited to meet everyone!

I like how you apologized for not posting sooner! That's awesome!

But that's exactly what I was thinking -- we need a facebook group - we're going to be Stony Brook dentists, yes!!!

I was deciding between Stony Brook and UConn because both have very similar programs and the price would be pretty much the same if I applied for Connecticut residence after my second year. Why I chose Stony is because 1) you get your own seat in 4th year clinic, which is amazing.. 2) I'm probably going to practice in NY when I graduate, if I went to UConn this would mean that I would have to take the North East Regional Boards and pass them on my first try in order to practice in NY as soon as I graduate 3) Stony Brook dentists have amazing reputations in NY 4) I like that we take classes with medical school, with dentistry going so holistic recently I think this will help us as dental research continues to progress 5) I like the small class size (this is different for each person). I like it though because, I hope, our whole class will be really close and willing to help one another out. Also, I think the small class size will give us more individualized attention so that we can truly perfect things we may not really excel at in the beginning. 6) they start clinic in the 2nd year, which is huge. 7) their new sim labs, and paperless system in the clinic looks amazing 8) they make appointments for you so that you know you'll get all the cases you need

I know this is like an essay but these are just a few points of why I liked it so much. I hope this helps you, good luck with the admissions process!

just a few points of correction here:

This is FALSE to the nth degree. All brand new grads wishing to work in NY must take a GPR to be licensed.
"Beginning January 1, 2007, all applicants for initial licensure must complete an approved clinically-based dental residency program of at least one year's duration. A clinical (practical) examination such as NERB will not be accepted for initial licensure after December 31, 2006. "

Unless something is going to change that we haven't heard about, this is pretty much what to expect: We get appointments made for us in pedo clinic (2nd and 3rd year) and in general clinic in 4th year. 2nd and 3rd year clinic, you are making your own calls. There are special cases where you will get booked by your coordinator but it happens very infrequently. That being said, the coordinators are wonderful and if you are on top of asking for things, you will be on top of getting the cases you need.

but everything else looks pretty accurate =) good luck with your decisions!

I'm not sure what it's like in CT but in Long Island and the boros there are a TON of residency programs that all know SB produces very good dentists.

Sorry, I heard this from an old timer, I should have assumed it would have been changed since then. Thanks for the correction!

Hey guys! I'm in too! I just made a facebook group, its Stony Brook Dental Class of 2015. I hope that wasn't presumptuous of me to do so, I was just hoping I could see who I'd be in dental school with for 4 years lol

With all due respect, why would you choose stony brook? I hear terrible things about the school. Everyone there is very depressed and extremely regretful for attending. I would definitely not attend, I hear the absolute worst horror stories. It is called Stoner Brook and Stony Boring by students for a reason.

Someone made the waitlist

That is your opinion, which you are entitled to. First of all, I attended Stony Brook for undergrad, so I know exactly what it is like over there. Second of all, based on my experiences in undergrad, I did not even apply to Stony Brook Dental because there was no way I was going back there. Do not assume.

We call it Stony Brook Dental School. We aren't the undergrad campus. We aren't associated with the main campus in any way.

Next time try talking to dental students. We have an excellent school and you (well not you, but other people) will graduate as a highly competent dentist compared to other schools out there.

If you want to get away from Suffolk County, I COMPLETELY understand, but you'll be passing up an amazing dental education.

Haha, you guys are just going to keep questioning me and try to bring me down, but no problem. Well, I did research in the dental school at Stony Brook for three years, so I knew some faculty. I was also a Health Science major so I spent a LOT of my time in HSC. Most of my friends were dental students and so I pretty much know the ins and outs. In addition, I have three close family members that attended Stony Brook dental and all three really regret it. I think I know what I am talking about. Like I said, do not assume. I am not attending and I would want to know why anyone else would.... or is it because they are unfamiliar with their future situation?

I know when I was applying this cycle that stony brook was at the top of my list for the reasons of small class size and in state tuition. However, I can see where some people may regret going there as no school is perfect...and Stony Brook did have some downsides (middle of no where, small class size may be overwhelming, students said everyone goes home during the weekends, the undergrad campus IS dead, non existent food options, and driving is a must etc.). Whatever, it doesn't matter I didn't hear back from them anyway haha. Ya, I would say we are all unfamiliar with the situation as most of us predents haven't attended a school yet to formulate a true opinion. Choosing any dental school for that matter requires at least some leap of faith.

I got the call too now even more confused..anyone knows how much the deposit is?
