Hey...I didn't see a thread for Stony Brook, so I thought to start one. Anyone heading on out to Long Island?

Hey, I just found out that I was accepted today and I'm totally psyched. I haven't decided if I'm definitely going to Stony Brook but I'm definitely considering it. I'm hoping to make a second visit out there 🙂

What about you Tifa, def. going to Stony Brook?

No, not definitely, but I'm checking out 'second look". Congrats on your acceptance!!

THere was an old StonyBrook Official thread but i think ppl stopped posting. I think you should both come to SB if you're NYS residents. You won't get a better education for the tuition. 👍

Does anyone know when Stony Brook's orientation starts? I want to participate in a triathlon and I want to make sure they don't clash. Thanks!

Last year, the first day of orientation was the 22nd of August- this would project to the 21st of August this year.

Yeah, the first day of orientation is 8/21 with classes starting the next Monday 8/28. Pre-orientation is June 16, and I'm looking forward to the "Stony Brook Revisited" on April 28. I got an e-mail about all of this a couple of weeks ago. I look forward to meeting you guys! Yay Stony Brook!

Do we need to wear business casual for that revisit day?

It's gonna be a lot of fun- my interview was such a long time ago that I've forgotten way too much (Sept 15th!).

I don't know about any dress code, the e-mail did say that we should get more info about the second look in late March I believe (so it should be any day I would think). I think it would just be casual, but I'm not positive. I'm really excited about it though, I interviewed in September too so it feels like it's been an eternity!

I hope people that are definitely going to Stony Brook find this thread and keep posting, I love talking about it! By the way, Clocks are you at NYU?

Yeah, I'm sure we'll find out more in due time.

So are you two definitely going to Stony brook?? What are you thinking about in terms of housing? I know the pre-orientation is supposed to be a chance to learn more about housing, but I feel like that's sooooooooo far away. And isn't orientation starting kind of late?

I'm definitely going! I'm thinking I'm going to live on campus first year (it's cheap, I don't feel like finding an apartment now, and it's on campus). I know a lot of people don't live on campus, but I'm fine with it for a year. I've been living in apartments in Manhattan for a couple of years, I can take going back to a dorm for a year. I think if you want to live off campus though, if you start looking in June at pre-orientation that that should be enough time to find a place by August. I don't really have anything to compare the start date of orientation to but I don't think it's that late. It's our last summer of freedom for a while, I don't mind it extending to mid-August 😀 !

I'm 99% sure I'm heading to Stony- I'm definitely getting an apartment.

I've lived in dorms for 4 years and I really want to have some liberty in shaping my personal space. I really don't want to the deal with the hassle of moving more than once either 😉. Granted, on-campus is cheap but I'm willing to take on that cost. In all likelihood, I'm going to look in May/June for apartments (then furniture shopping- yay!)

Like samkatyac, I am perfectly fine with the late orientation 🙂. I am going to savor every day of this summer!

So I just got the e-mail with more info about the Revisit, don't see anything in there about a dress code though 🙂 . Not much info in it really other than when and where, I thought there might be an itinierary of some sort. Well, I'm still going, I'm sure we'll find out all we need to. By the way, has anyone gotten any financial aid info yet? I haven't gotten anything.

Nothing yet, but I heard we're supposed to be receiving a packet about health forms and what not in the next week or so. It's supposed to be mailed out the first week in April (I called the office to see if it was sent yet.)

Not sure if I'll make it for revisit, but I'll definitely be at pre-orientation in June. And I'm officially going to Stony Brook!!!

Yay! Congrats on the big decision, Scneuro! Some of the Colorado people are already counting on cashing in on your new-found connection to Stony Brook. Somebody has a student who really wants to go there for anthropology...I'll have to talk to you "off-line about it."
Anyway, congrats to the rest of you Stony Brook 2010ers! And enjoy having this crazy Scneuro in your class, too! That right there is a great reason to go to Stony Brook =)

hmmmmmm... I hope they include something about the specs for the computers they reccomend. What do you guys think? Any thoughts on the type of laptop you're going to buy? Where are you guys looking for apts?

Yo-

Congrats to all; I am very pleased here at the ol' SB.

You'll definitely get specs on the computers; we all did via email before school started. You DO NOT have to rush out and get one now; it'll be a little while (months) into school before you truly NEED a laptop. But all the transcripts and lecture notes are posted online, so you absolutely need computer access of some sort from day one.

The school will also provide you a list of apartments and where most of us live. I got mine on the pre-orientation day in June; there's a standing list that they'll send out to all students at some point. One of the websites affiliated with Stony Brook Univ. has a thing where folks out in the community can post updates to what they're offering in terms of apartments. I found my place thru said listing. If you are really eager, I can try to find the site for y'all. You most certainly do not need a place this early, but you do not wanna start here without a place...to many students and not enough good places to live. I'd actually recommend doing some serious looking in late May or June - lots of the MD students (4th years) and grad students are shipping out at that point. Things will get real hairy beyond mid August, and you're in trouble if you wait until December.

Bring money, 'cause this area ain't cheap.

I actually just got the new Apple MacBook Pro as an early graduation present. I've been a Mac user all through college, I don't think I could stand going back to a PC. I think it came up during the tour at my interview, but I'm pretty sure one of the current students said that Macs are okay to use (they better be!). Nobody else remembers anything to the contrary, do you?

Did you guys receive a packet from Stony Brook lately? Supposedly it had hte health forms and info. about finanacial aid and that we need to send final transcripts. Is anything else in it? It got sent home to my parents and my mom opened it and said it didn't have anything that looked too interesting, but i was wondering if she missed something. Was there anything about computers or anything?

Thanks!

Haha, actually the same thing happened to me. My parents have that packet right now 😉

Does anyone know if Medical Spanish is a required first year coures? I saw it on the website.

I don't know but I think it's a great idea and I'm looking forward to taking it. LowlyPremed are you definitely coming to Stony Brook or still deciding and if so between who?

I was really impressed with Stony on my interview day. My comfort level at Stony was unmatched at any of my other interviews. I'll be there.

WELCOME!!!! It's nice to have another future classmate to talk to 🙂

Thanks! Does that mean you've decided?

That I have, I'm looking forward to starting! I can't wait to look for an apt. haha

I'm looking forward to apartment searching in the near future 😉

Yay! More classmates! 😀

I really don't think that the Medical Spanish is a requirement, but I will definitely be taking it. You know how frustrating it is to work in a NYC hospital and not speak any Spanish?!? I can speak French but that's completely useless (I should have listened to my father in 6th grade when he told me that I would never use French)! But even if you're not in NYC it's definitely a great skill to have, the number of Spanish speaking patients will only continue to increase.

This is going to be great. I'm really excited. Just think, in a few months, we'll be med students. I will start looking for apartments at the end of May. Hopefully I'll meet some potential roomates at the second look weekend.

Does anyone know the area? Are there certain towns/areas that you should stay away from when looking to rent? I don't want to be living by some undergrads that are goign to party every night and I don't want to have to worry about parking. I'm not going to second look at the end of this month, but i'll be at pre-orientation in june.

I'll ask about this stuff for you (and myself) at the second look and I will post thereafter.

Appreciate it in advance 🙂

I think that a lot of the med students live in Port Jefferson, which is really close and has a lot of apartment complexes. The town is right on the water too and that's where the ferry to Bridgeport docks. I really doubt any undergrads live out there, at least not enough to notice any partying at least. I'm living on campus first year (I'm lazy right now, don't feel like looking), but I've been looking at the apartments in Port Jeff for second year.

What's the on campus housing like? I tried looking through the website but I couldn't find anyting. I kept getting sent to a different page that has information for undergrad. Is it dorm style or are there apartments? If you have a site where you found this info, please post it. Thanks.

I'm mainly going by the info that they sent us about on-campus housing a couple of months ago. It's definitely apartment housing, not dorms, but I'm sure they're far from luxury. This website has the info about the apartment complexes they have on campus:

http://www.studentaffairs.stonybrook.edu/res/apartment

It's the same housing for med students, grad students, and some junior and senior undergrads, but grad students will only be housed with other grad students. I believe that the West apartments are just undergrads, and the Chapin and Schomburg apartments are for grads. From the housing info we got, it seems that in Chapin if you're a single student you will either share a bedroom with one other student in a three bedroom or you get your own room in a four bedroom. If you get Schomburg you get your own room in a four bedroom. If you go to this website,

http://studentaffairs.stonybrook.edu/virtualtour/

And click on the Chapin links at the top, you get a virtual tour and some pics of the apartments (like I said, far from luxury). It's only for one year though and it just makes the most sense for the situation I'm in, I'd rather live on campus one year and then find a place to live for the next three (the thought of not having to move for three years straight gets me really excited!). I hope all this helps!

Thanks for the info. The four bedrooms where you get your own room sounds good but I'm not so sure about sharing a room.

It's been ages since I've visited this site...and it's nice to see an Official Stony Brook Thread! Congrats to all of you who got in and I'm sure you'll have a great time at Stony over the next 4 years. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you! I'm a first year right now 🙂

To answer some questions, you really don't have to dress business casual for the 2nd look/ pre-orientation. As long as you look respectable in some way, it will be fine. It's a really chill day in which they give you lots of info about housing, financial aid, and tell you a little bit about the first year classes. Some people dress business casual just to be "safe", but don't feel like you have to.

As far as towns in the vicinity that you can look for off-campus housing in, here are some names: Port Jefferson, Port Jefferson Station, Setauket, Selden, Coram, and Lake Grove. These are the ones that are about 5-15 minutes away from Stony Brook. Those people that live on-campus right now generally liked it, however, all of them are moving to off-campus housing for next year. Be prepared if you live on-campus, they may put you in a suite with grad students from the other schools.

Medical Spanish is not a requirement 🙂

I hope that clears up some things! Let me know if you have more questions...

Well, I'm 100% sure I'm coming to Stony.

Apartment searching will be a chore!

Hello all,

I am not 100% sure if I'm coming to SB yet, so I'm planning to attend 2nd look weekend. One question: do students typically come to 2nd look weekend alone? I've already attended one other 2nd look weekend, and family/significant others were more than welcome. However, when I e-mailed admissions, whoever responded said that people typically come alone, although some come with others. I would rather not make this 10 hour car trip alone. What do you all think? I feel like I could make a better judgement if I had some idea of the schedule of events for the day.

Anyway, looking forward to perhaps meeting some of you!

I think it varies but I don't think you should feel bad about bringing someone else to see the school with you.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Does anyone one know what trauma level the University Hospital is?

It is a Level 1. In case some of you were interested. Here is what the different levels mean - I forgot myself.

Level 1 - A regional trauma center
- Having a capacity to provide advance tertiary care
- Leading every step in accident work, from prevention to rehabilitation. Being the center for training, researching, and system development planning
- Requiring sufficient support both in terms of personnel and budget

Level 2 - A hospital capable of providing definitive care almost similar to trauma center
level 1, but not able to provide as intricate treatment as level 1. (For example,
a patient who needs advanced-surgical critical care, a cardiac patient or a
patient with great vessel injury.)
- A hospital situated in an area with dense population, with a great number of trauma patients, but there is no Trauma Center Level 1 in the vicinity.
- Taking a role as a leading organization in regional training and development
planning

Level 3 - A hospital in an area with no Trauma Centers Level 1 and 2
- Capable of providing primary care, resustication, emergency operation,
stabilization, and transfer for definitive care, under the standard of action set
up by a professional institution.

Level 4 - A hospital in a community or a health station in a remote area. Servicing
doctors may be only general practitioners, not a surgeon, but can provide
advanced trauma life support before transfer.
- Operation based on treatment protocols for resustication, transfer protocols, and data reporting
- Having an efficient coordinating system with Trauma Centers Level 1 and 2.

Yeah, the University Hospital is Level 1. I really didn't know much about Long Island (its Strong I to me now!) before goin out there, but the Hospital services a LOT more people than I initially thought.

The student at my interview also said the Va hospital is good when you're a med student. The patients (a lot of them) are pretty tough and don't really mind that you're learning on them.

I hope I'm not too annoying on Friday!

I'm antsy and really want to get started (I've taken what some may consider a LIGHT courseload this semester). My mind is just all over the place right now.
