Just got a thing in the mail today about getting a physical before the end of July. Your doctor also needs to fill out a form about immunizations and so on. I guess it's time to do the old "turn your head and cough, please."

After sending them my tax information, I got a letter stating that I am required to send in a form concerning my/myparents assets and investments before they can finish the process.

how long ago was this? because i sent in my tax plus my parents tax information weeks ago and still haven't heard anything back. was this from an email or snail mail? thanks

I got a thing in the mail requesting me to fill out an Independent form for my financial aid after they told me I should send a Dependent form. Very pointless form considering my info is exactly the same and I'm not married. At least I know they got my original financial info.

hey there! i havent posted in awhile. did everyone get a letter on fri about housing stuff and roomate search? who wants to room?

I am possibly lookin for roomates as well.

I'm probably going to be moving to Philly late July, when is a good time to look at apts? I'd like to look soon, but realize no place is going to hold a place for me for 2 months if someone else is willing to move in immediately

I don't think we'll be getting anything about financial aid until late May or early June.

hey guys, i got a question about this financial aid stuff. I've called the Student financial office but the ppl give me inconsistent answers and are pretty much dead to me. Anyway, on my fafsa i filled out only my portion and submitted a couple months ago. Then they told me that i have to fill out my parents stuff also if i want more than just stafford loans (ie private loans, health care professionals loans etc). So i did that this week. I just sent in my W-2 and tax returns today. I called them and they said they also need my parents tax/w-2.

So i was wondering:
1. do loans other than stafford look at Fafsa or are they separate?
2. do i need parents info/tax returns for stafford or only other loans
3. what if parents got an extension on taxes and wont send it in till later this year, will that screw me over
4. is there a deadline for parents tax returns and what not

and trust me i have asked the temple financial aid office, but they have been very hesitant and iffy on the answers. thanks

I wouldn't stress about it too much. I think they use your parents info to determine financial need if your coming from a lower income families and if you're a Pennsylvania resident then loans provided by the state. The fed gov. is pretty much the main resource for grad student loans, for which you only need your personal tax information.

i called 3 times and got 3 different answers along with a ton of attitude from the ladies at financial aid. so we dont need our 2007 tax return or our parents to receive the stafford loan correct? one lady kept telling me that my fafsa wont be looked at until my w-2's were in along with my parents, but i thought that was only for when you wanted to be eligible for loans through the school. also, can we sign up for gradplus loans, even though we havent been approved for the stafford loan?

oh man, good i thought i was the only person having troubles. So they also said they wouldn't look at my Fafsa without the W-2/tax returns. One lady said they need my parents info to look at Fafsa and the same lady i think told me they do not need it another time. Here are some of the theories I have come up with, they are only theories mind you....

1. Stafford Loan= Student Fafsa info + tax returns/W-2 (deadline?)

2. All Other Loans= Parents info + parents tax return/W-2 (not sure if fafsa is required though by parents, because i was told that other loans will eventually ask for parents info if you havnt provided it yet... deadline?)

3. Stafford Loans and other loans do not depend on one another?

4. everyone died on the plane crash and this is all in locke's head

5. Financial Aid people at temple suck and Brian H put them up to this because he thinks its funny?

I'm pretty sure for stafford loans and grad plus loans (Both provided by the Federal Government) you only need to provide YOUR information not your parents. You can only borrow from the fed. up to the Cost of Attendence (COA) which is determined by Temple. When you filled out the FAFSA form you should have gotten an EFC (Expected Family Contribution) number which is based off of your 2007 tax information. This is used to calculate the amount of money you will be eligible for in Staffor loan amounts. COA-EFC = amount you will revieve in Stafford loans up to the Staffor loan limit which i believe is 38,500/year. The rest of the money you need for school can be borrowed through the Grad plus program, or private lenders. You cannot borrow more than the COA amount from the fed, but you can barrow as much as you want from private lenders.

The deadline for FAFSA has passed, your taxes are obviously due by 4/15 and you should submit a completed tax return to Temple ASAP.

Since i'm on the topic of student loans. I would recommend researching your lenders carefully if you're going to have to borrow several briefcases full of cash like me. Because of the current economic path this country is in, the Fed. has been decreasing incentives for borrowes. Unfortunatly for us, you can no longer consolidate your student loans at a lower interest rate when we graduate. They will be fixed at 6.8% and 8.5% for Stafford and Grad plus. In choosing a lender there are various incentives for decreased interest rates when you go into repayment and origination fee amounts. Too make things a little more confusing some of these incentives will probably change in June or early July so just be on the lookout. Check out the Financial Aid subforum of this website. Some good stuff there.

congrats to u all...i got my acceptance letter on friday in the mail i was sooo shocked that it arrived that same day...
did u guys get any scholarships with ur packet...like that science gpa scholarship???
Brian (the recruiter @ Temple) basically said to just let him know if you had a 3.5 science GPA and he would get you the money... no essayor any hoops to jump through, just free money for having a good GPA!

I got my phone call last Thursday and my letter in the mail today... man I am stoked!!! I'll see you all in August!!

I wasn't sure what you needed to send to get any kind of federal loans, so I just sent them everything, mine and my mom's W2s and tax returns. I swear they find the least helpful people to run student aid offices. It's near impossible to get a correct answer out of them.

ditto

From my understanding, you only need to send in your tax info and your parents if you are applying for school funded aid. So if you are not submitting your parents info, then you need only to fill out the fafsa.

Our financial aid person is on vacation this week so she will begin to work on us when she gets back. The financial aid office just received the list of students from the dental school so we should be hearing form them in the next couple of weeks. She said they will send us a letter with anything else we need to submit as well.

I received an email from Temple today regarding REVISED Physical/Immunization Health Forms.. so if you already have yours filled out, then you will have to get them done again! :d

isnt it ironic, that i got my physical today, and then when i get home a few hours later receive that email. Ugh, oh well the lady forgot to sign it, so i had to go back anyways.

Email? I set up my email account about a week ago and haven't recieved any emails, are they sending emails to old boxes? On another note I never filed taxes but Temple said any professional student is considered independent and to file my fafsa as such, will I recieve less or more because of this? Last note, I was wondering the best way for finding a roomate?

Last note, I was wondering the best way for finding a roomate?

Are you looking for a fellow dental student roommate? If so, the best way would be to post something in this thread, or PM someone. There is also a facebook group that has like 62 members of our class...so you can post a message on there too. Or you can email Terry Griffin at [email protected] , and ask her to circulate your information on the roommate list. I found my roommate through this thread 👍

If you are looking for a non dental roommate, then try craiglist or one of the online roommate matching services. May even want to try going over to the pharmacy forum (find the incoming Temple, Jefferson threads) and inquiring there too for a fellow professional student roommmate.

does anyone know if we need our own health insurance or will Temple provide us one (included in student fees)??

I found my roommate through this thread 👍

Now why would you ever do that??? 😱 Aren't you aware that strangers, even your fellow students, aren't trustworthy? How do you know your roommate won't come busting in your room Saturday morning banging pots and pans only to get a priceless picture of you flipping out?? What happens if you wake up from a hard night of drinking only to find yourself in a bounded obstacle beautifully mastered like those in Justice vs. Simian's "we are your friends" video? :meanie:

😎 This is going to be better than college. 👍

On a side note, there are plenty of people on craigslist looking for subletters, if anyone is looking. About 3 months back I found a girl who lived in Olde City (not a very bad location at all) and she wanted only 325 for rent to share a 2 br apartment with her. However, these apartments are a little crummy looking, and you might live like a gypsy, but at least the external surrounding's not terrible. I found quite a few 1 br. apartments under 800 with utilities near rittenhouse, but they're not BRAND new.

I believe the rates for blue cross health insurance were around $999/year/student and that doesn't cover partners, spouses or such. There's a good chance I'm wrong, I don't know the exact price but I remember it was around there.

Add: if you already have your health insurance, then I'm sure you wouldnt need to pay that amount.

I hope I'm not the only one who's been an obscene waste of life since getting into dental school. I slept until 3:30 in the afternoon today.

I quit my job 2 weeks after I was accepted. So don't feel bad, my life consists of golfing, fishing, beach, traveling, and sleeping.

😀 I have become lazier than I ever thought I could become.

I don't know if this applies to anyone, but did any one receive the fin. aid letter stating they are required to submit thier parents information, and not include this on their FAFSA?

YOu can also look at the Penn students threads as well. Rittenhouse, olde city and art museum areas are all between the two.

Also you can try for Temple Podiatry or medical students as well. You can be as bold as to look into some law students as well...

haha... I've been sleeping in til at least 2pm every day. I'm only working one job right now in the evening/night... but i'm gonna be cutting back my hours soon and will probably be quitting not too long after.
I guess it's good to get it out of your system before school starts.... cause I dont imagine we'll be able to sleep in and be lazy much after school starts.

Hmm judging by your username I guess you come from 11224, Coney Island?
I live right around there, actually.

Ah I'm so excited to finally know!! So where's everyone from??? any PAers? any PAers from just south of philly to be exact???

Anyway, I have a place out in manayunk which I was almost definitely going in on until I began hearing what ppl had to say about the awesomeness of real city life...so now I'm leaning toward that and I want it! Is anyone looking for roommates to live with in the actual city city (as opposed to manayunk/roxborough/east falls)???

This is gonna be crazy! we should a have a bar night for all the people that post on this thread when we get up there so we can "formally" be introduced, over some jager bombs and flip cup of course!! wooo hoooo:laugh:

Dandeez, sounds like a plan to me. We should do it the weekend after orientation, which is my birthday as well!

hi everyone! so, i'm from NY (long island) and I've only been to philly for a quick minute (during the interview). When you guys say the city, and don't laugh at my question please, you mean center city? b/c i've been on CL everyday and can't seem to figure out which areas are safer/closer, etc. i want to live in an actual city envt though, and i've heard center city is like that. is that where i should be looking for a place? also, any females want a roommate in that area?

also... the area immediately surrounding the dental school, like within a 1 mile radius, are those areas safe and do a lot of dental school students live near there?

When people are saying the city, they are meaning center city, The "city" as you know is NY... but people not from NY or NJ don't know that.

As far as center city living... do not live within a mile radius of the school... north Philadelphia, and broad street would not be considered the safest areas to live. I would shoot for rittenhouse area (smack in the middle of the city although most expensive part), art museum area ( thats where I will be... can find some affordable options, and still in the city environment; also near the museums and as the name says the philadelphia museum of art) or old city ( surrounds the older, historical area... around 2nd and chestnut are alot of bars)

let me know if you have an questions, or want some names of apartment buildings...

Has anyone signed a lease yet? If so, where and what was the rent like? Give us the deets.

filling out applications now as we speak....for a mid july move in...
