***Official Temple C/O 2012 Acceptance Thread***

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So after being in phily i realized i will probably end up in roxburough or manayunk (sorry for misspelling the names if i did). With me having a car i think its the best option for my first year.

Anyways, i believe i have one roomate and am wondering if anyone else is thinking that area. On my flight home, i sat next to a lady who said manayunk is even better than roxy, especially if your by main street.

Anyone seriously interested? It would be sweet to get a house w/ 3, 4 or 5 bedrooms!!!

On my flight home I sat next to some guy that was snoring and leaning over into my seat the whole way :scared:

I looked at those pretty closely, and decided that for Temple it wasn't worth it on a purely financial basis. If you get down to what you give up in salary verses what you get out of it (they do pay for everything and give you a 20,000 dollar bonus), it still comes out that loans are a tad bit better, at least for my situation. I still think its a great thing to do, but its more for the experience you get as a dentist in the military not having to deal with any of the overhead of a practice or insurance or getting your patients to pay (and I think soldiers probably make the best patients since they're trained to sit still and not complain). The best thing though is that you get to serve your country, and thats something you take with you your whole life. I decided against it in the end, but it was a very close call.

what happened to our thread, its completely dead

I'm all for bringing it back. Anyone catch that 6-0 shellacking of the Flyers by the Penguins this Sunday? What a beautiful game! I just hope they can do the same to Detroit? Do you think it'll make it harder for me to find an apartment in Philly next week if I'm sporting a Pens jersey😀?

Hey Class of 2012!

If any of you are in the area, and are considering the Navy scholarship (or just want an excuse to come by Temple Dental), there will be a lunch and learn at school this Thursday.

Don't fret, I'm not a recruiter, but a (almost) 2nd year with the scholarship. I thought this might be of interest to some of you. It'll be nice to learn about HPSP in a non pressure environment all while getting free lunch and getting a preview of the rooms you will spend your next 2 years in.

If you want more information (time and place), PM me. Yeah!

ok ok so the pens gave us a nice thrashing, however we werent full strength and we improved alot this season compared to last year. Wearing a pens jersey is a lot better than wearing a rangers jersey around philly.

question, does anyone know when we have to have our physical in by?

The physical exam form has to be turned in by August 1st.
The letter also says that the titers can be done at Temple student health Services... and that all immunizations must be completed before patient contact.

Hi, congrats everyone again! I applied too late for grad housing and am looking for a roommate to live with close to campus. I am open to locations and prices. Email me at [email protected]

Have a great summer 🙂

Hey Guys congratulations everyone for getting in, you're going to love it here. I'm just finishing my first year and have loved every second so far. Ask me again though when we start the dreaded "second year"!!! I live at Henry on the Park Apartments and just got a friend of mine to move in. Anyway the management surprised me today with a thousand dollar check because my friend had put my name down as the person who had referred him to Henry on the Park Apartments. So I'm giving him half and the thought came to me to offer the same thing to anyone else moving into Henry. Who couldn't use five hundred bucks to start dental school. If anyone is moving into Henry send me a message and I'll give you me name and can answer any other questions you may have about Henry on the Park or about dental school in general. Congrats again👍

about the immunizations - try to get them done but they wont give you crap about it until the end of 1st year since you dont have mandatory patient contact till 2nd year.

hi there,
it seems like everyone's busy with apt hunting now...I'm curious about how you guys are planning to finance your dental education? if u'r not a newly admitted, any advice or experiences you want to share? I'll filling out the MPN for stafford loan and wonder what I should base on to choose the lender since this is my first time taking out this loan. Any insight/advice is greatly appreciated 🙂...
Also, r we really gonna use a quart size of teeth? it sounds a lot..

I hope I'm not the only one who's been an obscene waste of life since getting into dental school. I slept until 3:30 in the afternoon today.

No I have basically been worthless before getting into dental school, i was hoping that getting accepted would make me less worthless, but yeah i slept till 12 today and dont work until friday.

i havent been around this thread or SND lately. Just seeing how everyone has been doing? Only a few more months!!! We will have to get together and have one huge bbq/par tayyyy.

so im starting my search for an apt and i was wondering where most of you are living? Im thinkin about center city (rittenhouse square maybe). Anyone have any ideas as to where your living or places you reccomend? help would be greatly appreciated.

Most dental students choose to live in either Manayunk/Rox or Center City. Are you bringing a car? If so, you may want to look into Manayunk, since parking can be a pain in Center city. It can be done, but you will have to usually pay a premium to park.

If you are not bringing a car, center city is where I would recommend you live. As you mentioned, Rittenhouse is one of the nicer areas of the city - but rent is more expensive. If you can find a reasonable place, I say go for it 👍 My roommate and I will be living in Rittenhouse 😀

So what is everyone up to these days?

So what is everyone up to these days?

We must keep the thread alive!!

I'm in NC working in my father's vascular access center as an x-ray tech, its fun work and good pay for a summer job plus it gives me some experience dealing with patients, drugs, medical conditions (they're all old and sick), and x-ray use/reading. Otherwise I'm just hanging out and diving/fishing all summer. I'll be heading up to philly to move some stuff in the weekend of july 12th, so if anyone's going to be around at that time I'd love to take some people out to dinner (my treat if its not more than 5-6 people). Otherwise I'll be moving in permanently beginning in august.

p.s. am I the only one who hasn't worked out that teensy little detail of how to pay for d-school? I'm still waiting for my award letter from temple (filed my fafsa really late)

My fiancee and I will be moving in on July 1. For anyone who wants to meet up for a meal and/or drinks, we'd be up for it. We found a cool Belgian place in old city with a massive beer selection, top notch stuff, good mussles as well. Anyway, we'd be free anyday up through July 16 when my fiancee starts work. I, on the other hand, will be enjoying the full six weeks off. I figured I'd need it after working the last 14 months on night shift.

Also, if anyone else is into disc golf, there's apparently a decent course in fairmount park. Let me know if you want to play, it's become one of my favorite hobbies, even if I haven't been able to play too much recently.

Hey! I just got accepted and I am so excited! Anybody in Philly yet?

Thanks! I can't wait! Is anybody still looking for a roommate? If so, PM me!

your moved into your place already? school doesnt start till a lot later, what do you do everyday to occupy your time

Get things together for the apartment, learn the city, eat good food, explore, relax, hang out and get to know my roommate, repeat 😀

Where is your apartment? I went looking for an apartment today, but it was impossible to get anybody on the phone. Is your roommate a dental student as well?

dude, if you live in the city, you will be glad that you moved in early.. its damn near impossible to furnish your place without a car. it will take lots of time. it has also been great exploring Philly :hardy:

Apartment hunting is a pain....🙁

I live in the Rittenhouse area in a brown-stone building. Yes, my roommate is also an incoming Temple dental student....we decided to move up early because it takes time to get everything together when you live in the city without a car. Plus we wanted to have time to explore and get to know the city before school starts 😛

Goodluck with your search!

Hey! I'm from Philly, but I want to move to Center City for dental school because I live home with my parents now. How are you planning on commuting to school from the Rittenhouse area? Just wondering because it is alittle far from the Broad St. subway and that is why I haven't looked much in that area. Where have you guys been going out? My favorite place in Rittenhouse is the Continental at 18th and Chestnut. Have you been there yet?

... all immunizations must be completed before patient contact.

You will have mandatory pt. contact your first semester. so get those done ASAP. Then after first semester pt. contact is up to you, until the end of second year.

it's crazy how you can literally park anywhere you want (in the center dividers, under stop lights, etc) as long as their room for cars to go through (just look at south philly)....

hey, i was wondering where the majority of those living in center city are residing (ie. streets/ buildings) Im goin to be lookin in the rittenhouse square area, but dont know exactly which part/ parts where most of the dental students will be living. Let me know, thanks.

Haha I remember seeing that when I interviewed.. I was thinking, ".. what the heck, is that legal? isn't that a center turn lane?" also, there are always people parked in "no stopping at any time" lanes to move furniture. do the police care about this kind of stuff? I'd like to know for my own future reference.

i asked a family friend that exact same question when i was visiting philly. it is perfectly legal. drive around south philly and just observe where people park. with that in mind whatever they do you can do too!

It's a 4 block walk from 18th (where I live) to the Broad St. subway. It is really not far at all. It takes about 20 minutes total to get to school....which is right around the same time it will take someone to drive from Manayunk in decent traffic.

If you choose to live closer to Market St. you can always take the blue line to broad (if you don't really want to walk).

There are a ton of places to go out around here, especially for food. I pass by the continental all the time on 18th but have not tried it yet. Looks like that is where dinner is at tonight 👍

Whats up everyone? Cant wait to see you guys!!!! I am looking for a roommate i really don't care where i live just as long as i can get a parking spot. Does anyone need a roommate????

hi guys! i'm currently applying to temple and it's my first choice! i'm a PA resident, have a 3.2/3.0 gpa, and dats are around a 20 aa, 1000 hrs of dental assisting, x-ray certified, lots of volunteering (im hoping they really look at my experience)..so on that note, if u don't mind me asking...what were some of your stats...just so I know whether i have a good shot at this school or not!

thanks so much and good luck to all you on your first year! 🙂

My fiancee and I finally moved in a few days ago. We're in Chestnut Hill and it seems pretty convenient and moving, although it has been hard since we've had to buy all our furniture and kitchen stuff, it's not too bad.

On the person applying to school with the 3.20/3.00 and 20 AA, you have nearly identical stats to me in that regard, with my AA being 21 and science 20. You definitely have more shadowing hours than me, and I had alot of volunteer and leadership work in school. I definitely like your chances of getting at least an interview. I'm a PA resident as well, but that's not as big of a deal at Temple in terms of getting in, just in how much you pay. I think if you have a solid interview, you should get it. Then again, who gets in where can seem totally random at times.

Hello, i was wondering if you guys have bought laptops already? Any of you going apple or are most staying with pc?

I got a Toshiba when I graduated last year....

Thinking about getting a mac... although I have always been a pc user so we will see.

As for the person asking about people living in center city... I will be in the Art Museum Area. I do have a car though (and parking) so I will be driving to school. No subway line near my building anyway. I am from outside Philly... so I like my car if I need to head home or something.

If anyone is around in center city we should try and plan a get together.
