Hi,

After submitting FAFSA (and the school downloaded it), can you access UMD's student service website called SURFS? Or can only accepted students access that page?

Thanks! 🙂

Hey all,

Just looking for some support/help. I am a maryland resident and was interviewed 1/25 and told that they would meet on 2/14. As of Last Friday 3/4 I called the office and the woman told me they hadn't made a decision yet and that I knew I couldn't find out over the phone (not very nice either). This is somewhat troubling as I've read that numerous people did find out over the phone and it only took a month turn around time. At the interview they told us 3 - 4 weeks, now the receptionist is telling me 6 - 8 and first she said they haven't met yet, then she said they haven't made a decision. Please advise, should I keep calling? Should I write a letter? Should I just wait and pray? Is this a bad sign? Maryland is my first choice hence the anxiety. Thanks for your help/advice.

Hey, akestler -

I know it's really frustrating to wait, but that may be the best course of action at this point. Looks like you talked to the 'unpleasant' receptionist, rather than one of the more accommodating staff members, but you don't want to risk putting a negative light on your application by calling back too many times. If you do call back, perhaps you could just ask (anonymously) when the committee will meet this month to discuss interviewed applicants. [Cytoskelement, who frequents this board, may also have that info...]

The longer wait isn't necessarily a bad sign. Since it is the end of the season, they may be backed up. Thus, it's not surprising that it may take more than a month to hear back, even as an in-state applicant.

If you know that UMD is your first choice, and would attend if accepted, you might consider sending a letter of intent just to make that known. That way, if the Committee is on the fence, knowing how enthusiastic you are about the school may push you over the edge to a straight acceptance.

Good luck, and let us know how it all turns out. :luck:

Hi akestler 🙂

Don't worry to much about the AdComs not making a decision on your file yet. Your interviewers probably took forever to return their evaluations of you... and this probabaly held your file up. Or at least this was the reasoning given to me by the Admissions Secretary when I call a few months ago.

I know it's hard to wait, but that might be the best thing to do right now. Like starfruit says, you don't want to annoy them and have something negative written in your file. Starfruit's suggestion about writing a letter of intent is also a good idea. It'll show that you are really serious about UMD.

Good luck :luck:

Tinkerbelle, thanks for the info. I guess I was just confused why I needed to access SURFS if I haven't even heard from the school yet.

Thanks for the replies, I'm going to work on that letter and I guess I'll just sit by and wait...

Hey guys, I just got my interview invite from UMD. 😀 I am so excited. Any advice for me?

Whoohoo!! That's so wonderful, nervous! I know how much you wanted an interview. The best advice I can offer you is to spend some time reading up on the school, come up with some concrete reasons why you love it (I'm sure this won't be an issue for you 🙂 ), and review your medically related and other volunteer experiences and understand how they helped you to grow as a person and further your interest in medicine. You'll do great!!

You mean you haven't heard back from them post-interview? Well, you can still check SURFS to make sure UMD received your FAFSA.

I am so delighted! I know how long you've been waiting for this.

My interviews at Maryland were very relaxed (yes, I was nervous, but the interviewers didn't add to my stress). I'd say go look on the interview feedback forums. starfruit's advice is right on. They want to know how much you are interested in the school and how much thought you have given to becoming a physician. Ancedotes from volunteer experiences is a plus. Try also to think of someone who has influenced your decision to become a doctor (and they don't necessarily have to be doctors themselves).

You'll do great. I'm sure your enthusiasim will come across. 😀 👍

hey, congrats nervouspremed! i don't post that often, but i read the forum a lot and i know how much you wanted this. plus, you've given me a glimmer of hope. 😀 good luck!

I am so happy for you nervous! Now I will just have to keep my fingers crossed for KiKat. :luck:

As for the interview, dont get too nervous 😉 The people there are pretty realxed. My interviewer went over what they are looking for in an applicant- i can remember all the questions they had to fill out, but some of them are maturity, leader in the community, and motivation for medicine. Both of my interviewers talked about the professionalism essay. I am sure that you will do fine. How long until your interview day?

Yes, AdrenalineJunkie makes a good point.

Know your audience. Since UMD clearly is focused on the importance of professionalism, be aware of that context going into your interview and be prepared to talk about it, and/or to tie your experiences into what it means to be a professional. But really, the interviews are quite conversational and relaxed, so don't psych yourself out.

Is your interview soon? You'll do a wonderful job. 👍

Thanks AdrenalineJunki, that's really sweet. 🙂 Maybe that's the professionalism essay that killed my chances at UMD. I remember I had a very hard time coming up with something decent... Well, maybe it wasn't "decent" after all... 😕 Oh well. I'm trying to get over UMD and try to focus on other schools. Gluck with everything! :luck:

Thx guys, my interview is in 2 weeks, now, I am the true NervousPremed, 😀

Hey guys... out of curiosity, how long post-interview did those who have been accepted hear via letter? I interviewed on Feb 16th, so I'm not getting really nervous yet. The told us 4-6 weeks until we heard, but I thought maybe I'd just compare notes.

hey guys, i just got a letter today saying that im "waitlisted". Do you guys know if maryland do end up accepting people from the waitlist? Im thinking that since it's a state school, most people that get accepted there will end up going there...

thanx

I don't know about that. I mean, Maryland is a good state school, but I bet there are still a bunch of people who decline for top ranked schools. I bet they take a bunch of people off the waitlists. Maybe cytoskelement will chime in... he usually has the low down on the UMD Admissions process 🙂

Good luck getting off the waitlist, fashiondoc :luck:

Great job, Copperbutterfly!

For all those who are still waiting, hang in there! :luck:

Maryland's waitlist is usually divided into 3 tiers. If you're in the top third, your chances are much better then the bottom third - obviously (however, you may be able to find out what tier you are in). Keep in mind that UMD usually accepts about 300 people for a class of 150. I'd assume that right now they have accepted enough to fill the class... but many will decline and go to their own state schools or top tier schools (remember, early in the season is when the "aces" interview... of course maryland will accept them - but most likely, many will not matriculate). good luck guys.

Hey everyone,

So I ended up getting a letter from MD yesterday stating that they haven't accepted/rejected me yet or put me on a waitlist, they said i'm on some sort of "hold" and they will review my app later. Don't know exactly what this means.... so I was thinking of writing a letter of intent. I don't have the maryland interview materials on me, but I have the med. AAMC med school book and they mentioned that maryland placed an emphasis on independent study, is this true? Also, for someone who goes there or knows, what is the name of tha hall/building where you would have orientation/freshmen classes? Thanks for all your help, really hope they give me a spot...

hold = waitlist... its the same thing (see my previous post). they will pull people from the first tier of the hold list to fill the class... then the second... rarely do they make it to the third.

maryland does stress independent study... you only have 2 hours of lecture and up to 2 hours of small group a day. that leaves a LOT of free time if you weren't expected to self study. essentially, lecture is an overview of what you're responsible to learn. its a detailed overview... but an overview nonetheless. small groups emphasize important material... esp in second year.

freshman orientation is usually in the MSTF (medical school teaching facility) atrium... currently classes are held in the MSTF auditorium because FLH (freshman lecture hall) is being remodeled. usually, classes are held in FLH, which is in BRB (bressler research building). that sounds really convoluted... hope it helps

Thanks for the information. Hopefully I'll be able to buy you a beer next year for all the great advice.

I have a quick question:

I got a letter in the mail telling me about Marylands financial aid system (SURF) and to use my soc. security and birthdate as login and pin. When I went to the site I could login...but officially I'm still on hold (since January).

Does the fact that I can log on to the financial aid page mean anything?

Thanks!

Hey Cytoskeletment, by any chance, do you know if the incoming class for UMD is filled or am I interviewing for a waitlist spot? Thx

How many of you are bringing a car with you? I'm trying to decide if i really need to buy a car this summer or if I can manage without one. Soooo.... will anyone else be carless?

I'm bringing my car with me, and it's looking like it's going to cost me too. 😛 Besides getting groceries and other miscellaneous errands, you won't need it if you're living close to campus. And besides, tinkerbelle, you can always bum rides off of your classmates if you need to get somewhere. I'd be more than happy to take you around. 🙂

when you come before the ADCOM, they have three choices for you... you are either accepted, held, or rejected. at this point of the year, you are more likely to be held (unless you completely flop the interview and get rejected) because i'm sure that many other "high caliber" students have also been held (for whatever reason)... that being said, i'd guess that anyone who interviews and has yet to go before the ADCOM has a chance to be accepted right off the bat - you could WOW your interviewers. keep that in mind!

as far as the class goes... i'm sure it is filled according to "numbers" (ie i'm sure they've offered that many accepts... but remember that the commit date isn't until ~may 14 (i think) - so noone is required to decide on a school until them.

you can manage without a car. many students do it. the only difficulty is grocery shopping --> nothing within walking distance. i'm sure that you will make friends with car-owning classmates or if you plan to have a roomate... car = expensive, esp. if you live in one of the apartment complexes and need to pay for a garage. if you live in a townhouse with roomates in Ridgely's or elsewhere - you can get a street permit for 20 bucks a year.

I hate asking my friends for rides, but I guess that's what i'll have to do. I suppose i should brush up on my cooking skills. That way i can barter dinner and plates of cookies for rides to the grocery store 😀

*ahem* so what do you like to eat, BlueMagpie 😛

Hey Guys,

Has anybody had any luck finding a reasonably priced apartment close to campus. I am about to put in an application for university suites and/or Pascault Row. However, I have heard that these are overpriced and run like undergrad dorms ( i.e. visitor regulations, no candles, shared bedrooms). My family lives within 30 minutes of the school but I would prefer to live in Baltimore. Yuck and parking will definitely be an issue.

P.S. We find out about PSP in April ?
P.P.S. Hey did you check out UMD's site looks like they moved up again in rankings

Hey CopperButterfly, I spoke with someone in charge of the PSP and they said decisions do go out at the end of April. And which site did you find this info about Maryland on? I tried looking it up, but I'm having trouble ... 😳

Congrats to U of MD class of 2009! I'm a current 4th year and have lived very close to campus, downtown Bmore, and in the suburbs. So feel free to PM me with questions about either U of MD SOM or living in Bmore.

Hey everyone, I'm new to these boards but I have a question regarding in-state status at UMD. How are in-state and out-state applications treated/reviewed differently? Also, while the UMD Med school website provides the avg. gpa and MCAT score for everyone in the class, is there any way to determine/find out what the avg. gpa and MCAT score is for in-state and out-state separate? If that is not know, could people take a guess as to the difference btw in-state and out-state averages (are we talking like 3.5, 30 MCAT in-state vs 3.7, 34 out-state or is there no real differences probably btw the two averages)

Thanks and sorry if my post is confusing. I have enjoyed reading through the helpful information everyone has provided and look forward to probably applying to UMD for next year.

Hi, everybody. I'm a grad student in PA, but I'm a MD resident and would LOVE to go to UMd. I interviewed there the first week of February. I figure I'll hear from them either this week or next. I'm pretty scared. My interviews went pretty well. Unfortunately, they were both before lunch with the students and the tour, both of which made me fall madly in love with the school. So I didn't get to express my great impression of the school to my interviewers. I sent letters to both a few days later saying this, I hope it helps. Wish me luck, you lucky UMd'ers. :luck: 🙁
