So about 2 weeks ago I received this letter, it goes something along the lines of "This is to inform you that the committee has made an initial review of your appa nd that it is not able at this time to make a final decision concerning it.yada yada still under active consideration" Sounded like a hold, some seemed to think it was a waitlist. They also mentioned maryland has 3 types of waitlist. About 2 days afterwards, I wrote a letter of intent addressed to the Dean stating my serious intention of going to MD if accepted. So it's been about 1.5 weeks since I wrote that letter, I'm sure they got it as I sent it certified. I was wondering if I should call just to make sure the LOI is in my file and also to see if I can find out where I am on the wait list (top tier, bottom tier etc...) any thoughts? suggestions? Should I wait longer? Thanks for all the help.

Hey, what do people think of the University Suites? I'm seriously considering applying, even though they do seem a little pricey. My main concern is that I would definitely want to live with one or two first years and I don't know if other first years are considering this option. Just wondering if other people are considering it,

It wouldn't hurt to call and ask, but they may not have the waitlist tier rankings set yet, since they may be still reviewing files post-interview.
Sorry about the letter, but hang in there. It's not over yet.

I got a letter in the mail telling me about Marylands financial aid system (SURF) and to use my soc. security and birthdate as login and pin. When I went to the site I could login...but officially I'm still on hold (since January).

Does the fact that I can log on to the financial aid page mean anything?

Your question was lost in the lower pages of the thread, so I thought I'd attempt to answer it so you wouldn't be left hanging. I think all those still under active consideration post-interview at UMD can access SURFS.

I think I might be in the same boat as you akestler. I just called the admissions office to check on my status and they said my application was reviewed yesterday and is scheduled to be reviewed again in 10days - 2weeks. What does that mean?? I'm not sure what their waitlist structure is, but if I'm on one I plan on writing a LOI as soon as possible. If you call the admissions office about your placement on the waitlist, could you post how receptive they were to your call? They seemed nice about checking my status eventhough it has only been a little over 3 weeks.

People who live there now seems to say it's a complete rip off (or at least that's what i hear my friends say). Although, I am really tempted to apply just in case I can't find a nice apartment off campus. But I'd rather live with first year med students... and I don't know if that's possible in the university housing.

I hate finiding housing. I don't undestand why this area is so darn expensive 😡

Well, I guess they do include utilities and cable and internet, so you have to factor that in there...and they are within a block of the med school, which is key. But is there another good way to find 1st year roommates? I don't know whether we'll be getting a more informative packet at some point with that kind of stuff. And I haven't heard anything about a 2nd look weekend...anyone know?

Have you checked out the residence life page? There is a place there to post an ad for a roommate- although i dont remember seeing any first years posting there, its worth a try. I bet there are a lot more incoming students who are also looking for roommates and dont know about SDN. The website also has some good links to other apartment complexes. I remember reading that the admissions office helps find roommates for incoming students, so you might want to give them a call too.

Hey guys, I've been holding on to an acceptance from UMD for a while now, but I'm still torn between UMD, UVA, and NYU. I'm really starting to get frustrated with going back and forth and thinking of all the pros and cons of each school, but I'm so lost! I'm grateful to be in this position, but it's still a tough choice to make. So UMD definitely doesn't have a second visit weekend? I'm a MD resident, which makes the tuition (obviously) a lot lower, but after interviewing I felt sort of ambivalent about the school...I wish they had a second look weekend so that I could get a better idea. Anyway, if you all have any advice, I would REALLY appreciate it...congrats to you all on the acceptances!

I'm local but I'm sure I don't represent the student body well. Very non-trad.

Speaking of, I just remember why the June 5-6 weekend wouldn't work for me. I have my ten year reunion at my undergrad that weekend.

Hey guys, just want to say that Maryland medical school is amazing, it's defintely make me want to go there more. Did anybody else have both of their interview last only 20 minutes? Also, did anybody get accepted even tho he or she felt that he or she didnt' do well in one of the interview? Anyway, I am crossing my fingers, I will find out in 4 weeks.

ms2209 - That's a tough choice between the three schools. It would be nice if UMD had a second look, but that historically has not been the case. I bet the admissions office could hook you up with a student to follow around for a morning, if you wanted to check out life on campus, attend a class, and get a better vibe for the school. That might be even better than a pre-planned second-look weekend, with 'promotional' presentations, etc...

Also, for those interested, the UMD match list for 2005 is posted on the website:



By my count, in terms of competitive specialties, there were 12 EM, 3 Optho, 1 RadOnc, 1 Urology, 5 OrthSurg, and 4 Radiology matches. Also of note, there were 12 people matched into neurology residencies and 11 into general surgery. That seemed like a lot to me.

Hey nervous,

I was just thinking about you the other day, and wondering how your interview day went. 🙂

From accounts on this board, it seems to be pretty common for people to have not-so-great interviews and still come out with an acceptance letter.
Also, just because YOU feel as if your interview(s) didn't go well doesn't necessarily mean your interviewers thought so. Just think positively!
Also, if UMD is, indeed, your first choice school, send in that letter of intent along with your thank you notes.

what does prelim medicine mean? and why did some of these people match to two hospitals?

From what I understand, the preliminary medicine/transitional/preliminary surgery year is the intern year.

Some programs/hospitals will have a built-in intern year, but others will not. This is why many people matched at two hospitals.

So, for instance, in radiology, one might have an intern year at Hospital #1, and then move to Hospital #2 for the remainder of the residency, where he/she would enter as a PGY-2 (post-graduate year 2) resident.

Yes, I think that's the idea (but I think the intern year is considered part of your residency). You have more responsibility for your patients as an intern than you do during medical school when in your IM rotation. Also, the knowledge you attain during the intern year presumably helps you in whatever more specific training you will pursue.

Hey ms2209, I'm having a similar dilemma between U MD, U Mich, MSSM, and NYU. I'm a MD resident so tuition wise, UMD makes a lot of sense. However, I went to undergrad in B'more for 4 years, and I'm really reluctant to spend another 4 years there. I'm currently living in NYC and its hard to imagine leaving the city. I'm trying to factor everything together: location, prestige, cost, general happiness together; but it seems like there are a lot of pros and cons for all those schools and its a tough decision to make. At this point, I'm leaning towards NYU, but nothing is set in stone yet. What are you leaning towards?

I think the very last day for submitting the FAFSA is like April 1 or something. But the priority dealine was March 15th... so your chances of receiving a grant or something are probably a little lower. The date should be on the Maryland Financial Aid Website. You should check it out. Do it quickly though. FA packages come out April 8th....

I noticed that on the fin. aid site there are 2 FAFSA deadlines March 1 for state scholarships and March 15 for -I think- federal money.

Yup, you're still eligible for scholarships and stuff from the University of Maryland. You'll just have to hope that all the money hasn't been awarded yet.

since you mentioned that you live in Silver Spring now, i'm curious why you're finding baltimore to be expensive? since i'm probably going to live in SS with my bf, I'm jealous of those who can take advantage of the cheap(er) rent in Baltimore...but maybe i've just never really lived somewhere that's actually CHEAP rather than just cheapER than the major east coast cities (DC, NY, Boston)...I lived in Providence (which seemed AMAZING to me...we had a TWO-bedroom in a victorian house for 725/month)...but i'm expecting to have to pay 1200/month in SS to share a ONE bedroom with my bf.

what do you think is a reasonable monthly rent for a student?

from the postings on the res life bulleting, i got the impression that it seemed like finding an apartment to share with other UMAB students for around $400 a room would be fairly easy...does that seem expensive to you?

and i apologize in advance if i'm being too blunt about numbers, you don't have to be specific if you're uncomfortable with it! anonymous forums are great for this kind of thing, but since we'll all be meeting each other soon, it kind of changes the dynamic...and i have no idea how private other people like to be about their finances!

I interviewed at UMD at the end of February and recieved a letter from the adcom last week saying I am not accepted/rejected/or on the waitlist, rather I have been reviewed and am set to be rereviewed in a couple of weeks. I know there was a previous post about this letter, I was just wondering if anyone in this situation sent in additional info and/or another recommendation. I was thinking about sending in a LOI but Im not sure if that would help. Has anyone else that has received this letter heard any new news? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! 🙂

Hmm. I wonder how much of this budget I can cut out. I never understood why they charge us fees. Why not make it part of out tuition? And what types of uniforms could we possibly need to buy? Scrubs?
