*OFFICIAL* U of Washington 2004 'competitive' list

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
mdforme:

I'd say people are too busy being nervous on interview day to properly scope out the school. : ) Plus, it's hard to decide when you don't even know what your other options are, or if that school would even be an option (rejection always a possibility).

More information can never hurt, particularly if you have two equally weighted prospects and need something to tip the balance.

brownie2003,

As far as I know the UW doesn't have a second look weekend. You should call them and ask about it. I know some schools will arrange a "second look" for you where you can sit in on classes and talk more with current students if you need more info to make your decision.

Laurie

PS I missed the AZ game, but looks like it went well. We're up against Stanford again in about an hour. Hope we get a repeat of last week. Go dawgs!

Ok, that's cool. I have never been to a second look weekend, and wasn't quite sure what they even were. I just noticed that you also live in Seattle, so it makes much more sense- no extra travel. 🙂

Got my big white envelope today. I'm in the UWSOM Class of 2008!! 😀 I'll be WWAMI'ing it up in Moscow/Pullman the first year. Any other Idaho WWAMI'ers out there? I know one other person who will be there. She does research with me at the Boise VA. It'll be cool knowing someone already.

Good luck to all those waiting to hear and those on the alternate lists. I know what you're going through. Last year I was #8 on the Idaho alternate list. When I didn't get in I deferred my acceptance at Case Western and reapplied to UWSOM. I just knew that UWSOM was the perfect school for me. Sometimes it just takes more than one application cycle to get where you belong.

big congrats wolferman! we'll be wwamimates since i was assigned to pullman/moscow for the first year. i'm sure we'll have a great time. so far these are the users who will be in the palouse.

1) wolferman
2) jenuine
3) llll8i8llll
4) potuhusky

if anyone else belongs on this list, slap your name on. good luck everyone else!

wolferman,

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!

This is my first use of the clapping smiley just for you. If there is anyone on this list that I've been rooting for, it's you. After getting so close last year, I'm glad your perserverence paid off.

Go out and drink loads of Irish beer to celebrate!

Laurie

Congrats Wolferman!! I hope to be there soon! I hope to be posting the same very soon!

Congrats to Wolf! Pass some of your good karma our way! When do they make final decisions for WA residents again?

Wolferman-

Nicely done. Enjoy Pullman- the guys in my class that were in Pullman loved it there.

how happy/relaxed do you think the students are at UW? on my interview day, students didn't seem all that happy... any thoughts?

That is my major concern with UW. I've heard UW really pushes the 2nd year students.

Now we all know that med school is difficult and sacrifices will have to be made, but I've also heard UW's students are not very happy as compared to other med students. I take this information from a 4th year UW student and reputation.

Anyone care to comment? Do you think UW's students are less happy than other med students? Why do you think this might be?

oh! and by the way, those of you on the competitive list should either write a letter of intent, letter of interest, or send them additional LORs. i think UW often puts very qualified people on the competitive list and then waits for an interest on our part before accepting. i was put on the competitive list in november, and just recently my supervisor sent in a letter of rec, and i got pulled off of it within a week. so keep on sending updates!! good luck to all 🙂

The students seemed really happy at my interview...but it was pretty early in the quarter, so maybe they were still in a post-summer lull. 🙂

When I went around interviewing, the happiest students did seem to be at the schools that emphasized PBL, though. I'd be happy too, if I only had to go to class for 2 hours a day instead of 7. 😀

I can't comment on how 2nd year at UW compares to other schools, as I've only done this 2nd year thing once- here at UW.

Yes- second year is tougher, I'd say, than first year. This is due to the shear quantity of information that must be absorbed. However, every medical school must teach basically the same information to its students so that they can pass the same exam that all medical students take after year II (USMLE).

Now, as far as attitude towards school goes- there are several schools of thought. I was a moderately lazy undergrad who crammed for tests- almost no studying during regular weekdays, weekends, but all-nighters before tests. People said that this couldn't be done in medical school. Well- it can, sort of... instead of an all-nighter, I'm forced to study for 24-hours straight rather than 7-8, but its basically the same gig.

And finally, although we do generally have class 5 hours/day plus one morning a week, most of it (at least more than half) is not required. This means that if you want to sleep in until 11 or 12 a few days a week, you can. It also means that if you want to take 2-3 days off/week, you can. You just have to know yourself well enough to know if you are going to keep up. You basically have all of your class material and notes on DAY 1 of class. Can you learn it on your own? I get very little out of lecture, some learning in small groups, but the great majority of my learning comes from sitting at a desk at home hitting the notes. It's all provided- everything that they say in class. So, if you are one that goes to class everyday or feels guilty- then yes, 2nd year might suck. But for the rest of us (as much as 1/3-1/2 the class) who learn better on our own, it isn't too bad. Best of luck to all, and enjoy WWAMI-land if you are fortunate to be at a WWAMI site. There is not another like this program.

thanx for the tip.... silvertip! i'm sure that i speak for many when i admit that i was hoping, but not relying on the first two years to be the way you described. i definately don't get too much out of lecture but i really learn great on my own.

so instead of walking into class like this guy :scared:

i'll be walking in like this guy 😱

good luck on the remaining year and step 1!

What is the difference between the competitive pool and the alternate list?

The competitive pool is effectively a post-interview hold. They review it continuously and will make final admissions descsions (accepted, rejected, alternate) at the end of March.

The alternate list is their waitlist. The UW has a ranked and unranked list. They go through the ranked list first and then go off the unranked list if spots continue to open over the summer.

Here is the text of the "competitive" list email they send out if you want exact details:

Dear Ms./Mr. X:

This notice is intended to bring you up to date on the status of your application to the University of Washington School of Medicine. After evaluation of your interview and academic record, the Executive Committee of the Committee on Admissions considers you competitive for entrance into the class of 2004. A competitive status is not a rejection nor is it an acceptance, but it is an indication that you are part of a pool of applicants who will remain under consideration. Last year 32% of the applicants who received this letter were eventually accepted or put on an alternate list. You may expect a definite decision regarding the final status of your application no later than the first week of April 2004. At this point, however, we are unable to indicate what your chances for eventual acceptance or alternate placement are.

We realize that this uncertainty may compound your stress and frustration with the admissions process, but it is important that the Committee evaluate additional candidates before making a final decision. Until your status changes after further review, this will be the only notice you receive until final action is taken.

If you are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate courses, please submit a grade report of your additional grades. If you are accepted you will then be asked to submit official transcripts. Also, it would be helpful for you to update us concerning significant activities that you have undertaken subsequent to your interview.

In the meantime, if you have any questions about our application process, do not hesitate to contact this office.

Werner E. Samson, M.D.
Clinical Professor of Medicine
Assistant Dean and Chairman,
Committee on Admissions

Nope- No new news here... Hopefully soon!

No news here. Tomorrow is the last of the regular EXCOM meetings though and then it's the home stretch to the finish. I'm going to Japan on Saturday and won't be back until Mon the 29th. Hope to have some news by then, but who knows what the lag time will be. Good luck everyone!

Nothing here, but the last excom meeting is the big three day marathon one from this tues (23rd) to thursday (25th). So here we go! LaurieB, why're you going to Japan? I went when i was in high school (took japanese for 3 years, but can't remember jack). Loved it! Have fun!
TD

So the last excom meeting is the 23rd to the 25th. Do they decide on everyone on the competive pool at this time only or are they still looking at people for the first time? What can happen at this time? Accepted, ranked waitlist, unranked waitlist, rejected? Am I right in this respect? Thanks for the answers in advance.

Yes hongspruce, you're right. I believe this last meeting will not have any new people, it's to sort out the competitive pool people and make a final decision on all of us left waiting for an answer.

Accepted, ranked waitlist (25 spots I believe, they've always gone through all of these), unranked waitlist (another 25 spots, have a chance to reinterview with Dr. Samson who determines the order of people gaining admittance), or rejected.

We're to find out our status by the first week of April at the latest. March 29th is my guess, since they could put something in the mail Friday.

Another question for anyone. How many people get off the unranked waitlist? Less than half?

Another question on top of how many get off the unranked list is how many people are accepted right off instead of getting on the waitlist. How many slots are left for this last excom meeting?

I don't think many can answer that. I depends on how many people with acceptance offers turned it down and how many acceptances have been offered already.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that 75% of the people accepted last year chose to attend?

I remember this figure too - apparently it's the highest rate of any school in the US. 😱

I think the rate is even higher for the WAMI kids. I just keep on hopin' that I can get off the waitlist. Soon I hope....

My Japan trip is a family vacation. It should be a great time and the timing couldn't be better for me. I'll be thinking of you guys and sending good thoughts your way. I'd love it if we all could be classmates next year.

Yeah. I read that UWSOM has the highest matriculation rate of any med school in the country. Sigh.

come on you guys, get ahold of yourselves. if uw has the highest matriculation rate, then why do they need to assign 50 alternate spots, 25 of which in years past have always gotten in? If their matriculation rate was so high, then they wouldn't have such an active waitlist, i.e. many people must pass up an acceptance to uw. only 9 days till we hear (hopefully). I hope good news comes to all and have fun in Japan, LaurieB!
TD

I'm not sure how many people are waitlist ranked for MT WAMI students, but I know there have been years where no one has been accepted off the waitlist. Three of the last 13 years according to Myla. So I think the waitlist movement is quite variable, especially for the WAMI apps.
In any case, I hope all the WA residents will have their decisions very soon and that I may see you all in Seattle in 2005! It will truly be a relief when I hear so I can start making plans.
Peace.

It is true that UW has the highest matriculation rate of any school. 70-75%, Harvard is a close second though. Which basically is right on with your assertion travelindoc, that around 50 people make it off the waitlist. About 120-130 students of every class are students who were from the original rounds of acceptances, 40-50 were pulled from the waitlist=170 per class.

just in case anyone was curious... i did a little calculation with the acceptance and enrolled stats posted on u.s. news to provide a matriculation rate for each top 20 research school. they are ordered with the school of the highest affinity at top. the stats aside each school are matriculation rate/ accepted/ enrolled

U of Wash 76% 235 178
Harvard 67% 246 165
UCSF 60% 234 141
Baylor 57% 295 168
Penn 57% 260 148
Duke 53% 190 101
Columbia 51% 290 149
UCLA-G 51% 237 121
UTSW-D 51% 431 218
Mayo 47% 89 42
Michigan 47% 362 170
J. Hopkins 46% 260 120
Yale 46% 221 101
Cornell 46% 221 101
Stanford 44% 195 86
UCSD 41% 295 122
Wash U 40% 308 122
Vandy 37% 280 104
Emory 37% 304 111
Pitt 35% 417 146

Damn, that's not encouraging! 😱 🙂 Who else is imagining what's going on during the three day marathon that starts tomorrow? is this when they throw all the apps out the window and whichever reach the bottom first are accepted? or are they gonna have the trained monkey choose?

Let's just say I'm having nightmares about my interviewer/adcom member talking about my interview and everyone starts laughing...

Even though I feel rejection is coming, I can't squash out that tiny hopeful/optimistic voice. Because of that little voice, rejection will hurt that much more.

Good luck to all you WA residents- I'll be sending good jujus to the admissions comm. for all my sdn friends.....

Hey, I just talked to someone who got rejected a week ago from UW post-interview (interviewed in Jan, I think) and he had a 3.9 and a 41 on the MCAT! Pretty crazy, they rejected him before the marathon, so apparently 1)they DO reject people before april, and 2) numbers are not at all everything to this committee. Just thought I'd try to relax all of you without perfect numbers. Thanks for the jujus mdforme! I'm sending some right back! 😀

okay everyone... i got the inside scoop. i had an informal conversation with a member on the excom last night. i was told that there are exactly 8 spots remaining for WA residents and they will be filling them over the next 3 days as well as compiling the rank and unranked waitlist. if/when the rank list is exhausted, dr. samson picks from the unranked list by himself.

btw, i met this excom member last week and he has been telling me a lot of interesting stories about their process. he even gave me a summary of what he remembered was discussed about me. very interesting post facto.

good luck everyone still waiting!

hey potuhusky, thanks for the info. Enlighten us! Regal us with your stories abouth the Excom. is 8 spots left by this time normal, high, low? how many are left in the competitive pool? any more info would be great! thanks!
td

8 spots seems very few! does anyone know how many people are actually ON the competitive list?

I would like to hear the stories from Potohusky also. Do tell!

Supposedly letters are being sent out NEXT week!

these stories are not all that informative, mostly just confirmation of what we mostly suspect. so here's what i can recall...

your entire application is thoroughly reviewed, no detail is left undiscussed. points are assigned for different things. they usually select a sole applicant and use it as calibration. you're either better or worse than this one applicant. if you've found yourself being uncharacteristcally clumsy since your interview, you're probably that person.

some look really great on paper but suck at the interview... they get the boot--- and vise versa.

you'd be surprise how many people claim to want to do certain things (i.e. serve the underserve) but have done nothing to prove it. that's extremely sour for the excom.

oh boy do they go on SDN. mainly for the interview feedback. and they DO KNOW which they were the interviewer for. they do have unique questions asked so thats how they figure it out.
they never really figure out who was the interviewee is though. i believe SDN is a great reason for the improved interview atmosphere.

i'll post more if i get any other juicy topics.

sorry TD but i don't know any answers to those questions. 😕

I'm trying to keep this as a topic of discussion. Spoke to admissions today. Now it is in the hands of fate. Nothing more to submit.... to do, but wait. That's what I was told. Good luck everyone waiting in line.
