Got a call today from Dr. Chaviano. rutgers '10, just as i was losing hope too

Did any of you guys send a copy of your passport/birth certificate? I didn't have these on my interview date and I know they requested them. It's kind of sketchy just to, fax my passport to the admissions office haha without any confirmation via phone.

I brought my passport there and they made a photocopy of it. If you don't fee safe faxing your passport and live close by, you could always try stopping by to have them make a copy?

just found out some good news from friends at UMDNJ. The class isn't full yet, however the last week for interviews is next week.

Congrats guys!

Anyone interviewing on Friday? I'll be going back there for another tour 🙂

Yeah that was the original plan, but then I heard back from Columbia. Which brings me to your next question. Yes, I heard back on Friday, and I was offered a spot on the alternate list. But I'm going to decline the offer.

If you're serious about going on the tour, Friday is the last day. I spoke with Pam about that already.

ok so I got in!! Wahooo! I got in! But is it just me or does the timeframe to send in deposit totally suck?!

According to ADEA Guidelines for Dental Schools When Extending Offers of Admission: “ For applicants who have been accepted between January 1 and January 31, the minimum response period shall be thirty days…”

http://www.adea.org/dental_education_pathways/aadsas/Documents/ADEA%20Guidelines%20for%20Dental%20Schools%20When%20Extending%20Offers%20of%20Admission.pdf

Does anyone think we could try to get the school to extend the deadline at all past Feb 1st? Its def one of my top choices, but there are still other schools I’m waiting to hear from & either way – even if I had already heard from all the schools by now – I would like more than a week to make a decision that’s gonna affect the next 4 years of my life.?? What do u all think? 😕 Besides - I dont have $1k to potentially throw away - should I end up not going to UMDNJ...

It says 30 days. Where are you getting that you only have a week to decide? And many people lose money on deposits if they have to put down money on a school before Jan 15th and have other interviews left. If you do HAVE to drop the $1,000 in the end, in the grand scheme of things, it means just about nothing.

My letter was just sent/recvd & deposit is due Feb 1st Monday. That's basically 1 week from when I got it...

I don't see where you're getting that date from. But if that's what your acceptance package says, I guess so.

CALL AND CHECK. I remember when I got my acceptance package, they wanted certain portions back before Jan 15th. I called and asked (because I didn't want to give up $85 bucks if I wasn't going to attend), and the lady told me that the dates were wrong, and to send it in by the normal deadline. Seemed sketch to me. But definitely call to check; they may have printed it wrong again. $1000 isn't chump change.

Packet says deposit is due by Feb 1st.

Gotcha. Well if you're not sure just send it. $1000 absolutely is chump change if you're coming out of school with $200,000 in loans. You have to look at the big picture here.

does anyone know how full is the class so far? estimates?

Within economies of scale, that's like comparing our nation's debt (over $12 trillion) to the Federal Reserve profit margin of $52 billion, and comparatively calling $52 billion chump change. $1000 dollars is still a lot of money, irregardless of the comparative value for average student debt.

Considering that a lot of students (including many of my own classmates) have yet to work a real job before entering dental school, their knowledge (or lackthereof) and expectation of the free market lends them the aura of being wet behind the ears when it comes to money. $1000 bucks is a lot of money, no matter how much debt you have.

That's what I thought. I've been seeing this sentiment on SDN a lot quite recently, the "Oh, X amount of money? That's nothing compared to the amount of debt you'll come out with". But considering how many days I have to work at minimum wage to come up with that kind of money, it's really not a stretch to make one measly phone call for the chance to keep your (or your mommy and daddy's) money.

No, it's not. $52 billion is a lot of money. It's like comparing $1,000 to $200,000, and it means nothing. It absolutely is a small amount of money in the grand scheme of things. I'm not saying throw it around like it means nothing, and I didn't say to just do it without calling and asking. OBVIOUSLY, you should do that first. But if waiting isn't possible, and in this situation, when it's the rest of your life, and you're not decided yet, and it's less than half a percent of what you're paying to go to school, I think it is worth risking. If you can't see that, you've got some thinking to do.

P.S. I said earlier that tomorrow was the last day of interviews, but that may have been incorrect. Tomorrow is the last day of currently scheduled interviews. I guess there might be more coming, but I don't know.

guyssss
great news
just spoke with pam
and she said that the FEB 1st date is a MISPRINT
and you have 30 days from when your mail was post dated i think. . . so she told me i have until ~feb 20th about

maybe call to make sure
but thats wat she told me directly
so gna wait a week or two instead of overnight shipping it

congrats on all who got in!!!

does anyone know exactly how the wait list works?? i.e. when they accept students from it and such?
thanks

ADEA policy is what is followed - 30 days is the mandate. In the grand scheme of things, 1000$ is still a lot of money, because there is a finite fund limit from which to recoup or payback loans. Many are subsidizing their application fees with a newly garnered credit card these days. So it would be best to realize that when someone states 1000$ is irreplaceable, in the grand scheme of things, their knowledge of personal finances trumps your clairvoyant view of the "big picture". But hey - if you have a decent job history, have been paying your bills and rent for a few years before entering school, and understand the importance of finances - then dispensing fiat dollar valuation would be completely valid. From your tone, this does not seem to be the case.

I don't have a full time job because I go to school full time, but I work 20 hours a week, I do pay some (not all) of my bills, and I understand the value of money. And in my honest opinion, it's a drop in the bucket, even though it takes me a while to make that with my current job.

Hey, does anyone know how to check if you UMDNJ has gotten the deposit and disclippinary form we sent in.

Well your check should be cashed so you can check your online bank statement, took about 1 week for it to clear (deposit and background check $$). For the disciplinary action forms, I called and made sure that they had received them.

Yeah I called and made sure they had everything.

Anyone know an exact address to send the transcript to? The website has been down for a few days. I figure it's just NJDS Admissions, 110 Bergen St, but just checking....

UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School
Office of Admissions
110 Bergen Street, Suite B-830
Newark, NJ 07101-1709

Exactly what I thought. Thanks

hey guys im looking at the student exepnse budget
and i came across the "Books and Supplies" ~$11,000
don't you think that is quite A LOT?
i'm looking at penn's books and supplies and it is equivalent to only $1,000
can anybody explain this?
in addition to what are these "fees" we might be paying?
thanks

For those of you out there who were wondering about February interviews - spoke to Pam Belo recently and she said that the school has decided not to do them. Not so good news for those of you looking to get a late interview, but certainly good news for those of you who are waiting on a decision.

got the waitlist letter in the mail. says I could hear as "early" as mid-May, or as late as August. kinda sucks

Same boat here. I emailed Dr Chaviano and she said they were pretty full and the wait list wasn't gonna change any time soon. Totally depressed :scared::scared::scared:

hi future dentists,

i am clearly not applying to dental school but wanted to ask those of you with access to the my.umdnj.edu portal a question on behalf of someone who does not yet have access to it:

with news of gov. christie cutting funding for umdnj i was trying to figure out if all of the umdnj schools will be having a tuition spike for 2010-2011....the CoA for UMDNJ-SOM (I got this off of the financial aid tab under the portal) looks like this:

Budget Detail
Budget Component Amount
Books & Supplies $10,000.00
Personal $5,000.00
Room & Board $25,000.00
Tuition & Fees $35,000.00
Transportation $5,000.00
Total: $80,000.00

it appears that the tuition will be around a $10k increase from last year....can any pre-dents with access to the portal share what their CoA looks like/ estimate how much in-state tuition will increase for the njds students?

thanks so much!

just spoke to Pam--she said they are restructuring a bit, but at most it would be a 10% increase . . . . .. so def not 10k

Sorry if i posted in wrong section but this seemed the only place where most Rutgers and NJ students were.

First off, Congratz on the admission.

Ok, i'm going to do my undergrad at Rutgers School of Engineering and hope to apply to dental schools with a focus more on UMDNJ. I was wondering if i can get tips on things you guys did. I already talked to a ER Physician who said he is going to ask his friend(Dentist) if i can shadow him. Any suggestions will be helpful.

Thanks
