Hi Ladies,

Thanks for checking in.. especially since we don't have much action... and I am sure people are getting sick of reading my posts.. hehe

how are things going now that Anatomy is over with. Do you find as if you have more time to spare? Or much more work to do with other classes?

Any advice for us new incoming students on when to start looking... visiting the area... planning move etc.. What to beware of in the first semester... other than the 5-10 pounds one might gaine... Idon't know.

There are more lecture hours this semester - and more individual classes. But I aslo enjoy it more.

If I could give you one golden piece of advice, it would be to keep an open mind and use this opportunity to learn things about yourself that you might not have known.

For instance, I thought that I would love anatomy, having been an artist and having owned a copy of Gray's anatomy forever. It turned out that I am much happier this semester. People will say Head and Neck is horrible: I enjoyed it. People loved Embryo: I couldn't wait for it to be over.

It's the little things. Just take your time, trust yourself and figure what works for you.

I bought a house near the school and I love being close. Other people enjoy the commute. The snow is wonderful and the nature in Maine is AWESOME - you may have to make time for it, but there are many local places to go.

Weight gain: Just eat well, try to rest, and visit the gym. I really liked the gym here when I interviewed and I am just getting around to using it: I am usually outside!!

I would be more than happy to answer specific Qs. For any of you folks w/ families and partners, I am always trying to get various years of students together and I work w / my spouse to get kids and family involved.

Hey everyone, I just read through this entire thread and it seems like I'm now the new kid in class. I had my interview on 1/13 and was accepted this past weekend. I'm on cloud nine! I'm in Vermont now, but excited to get back to Maine where I grew up. I can't wait to meet you all and I'm sure I will be checking in now and then for updates on this thread. YEAH!! I agree with all of gioia's wise advice 🙂 I also am just getting around to the gym myself. This semester is different than the last with some more free time but alot of lecture hours. However it is one semester closer which makes me excited 🙂 As far as advice, listen to your own gut insticts and hear what all of us wise to be second years have to say ( but take some of it with a grain of salt, we all have different expereinces and we are all different people 🙂 ) I wish you all the best of luck and know you will succeed. advice for looking in the area ( forgot to add to the last post 🙂 ) Look as soon as you know you are coming. You will be able to find housing up until the last minute but if you start looking earlier there obviously is more available. People in our class are doing everything from renting to owning. Property is decently priced up here and I find rentals to be fairly priced also ( I am payign 750 for a 2 br in town on Main St)

I would definitly say visit the area again. Especially if you are torn between several schools. While the area shouldnt dictate where you go remember you will be here for 2 years at least 🙂 Personally I love the area and while I get homesick sometimes its very nice and my classmates are great.

That would be my other piece f advice. Get to know as much of your class as you can ahead of time. We started up our pipeline as soon as we could and used that and this to communicate. It definitly takes the edge off getting to meet people and share stories and fears before it all begins.

Today's schedule was: 2 hours of genetics, 2 hours of virology, 1 hour of parasitology, and 2 hours of bacteriology. Next week we start pharmacology and physiology. I love the fact that the clinical aspects of what we are learning are more obvious but I do miss the hands on lab time of anatomy. I feel like I've got almost too much free time after the grind that was the last 6 weeks of last semester. I'm expecting that to change in the next couple of weeks. Like my classmate from FL, I live close to school and am very glad but in town versus out here is very much a personal decision. If possible, visit the places you are looking at renting/buying. I'm an Army HPSPer so anyone with questions about how the scholarship works or why I chose Army, PM me. As I tell interviewees, the best thing about UNECOM is the people so let us know what we can do to help make your transition easier.

i think for the place to live thing i am going to wait until UNE posts the off campus housing list. i've looked online at papers/websites, but the pickings seem kind of slim there. i have heard that the list they post is pretty good and covers a wide variety of living choices. if possible i would like to head up to maine at the end of feb. or begining of march. late spring will be a little crazy here at work so am going to try to get this taken care of as soon as i can. other than that...........only 6 more months........yay!!! i can't wait.

Any current UNE students want to weigh in on their choices for health insurance? How is the plan that UNE provides through Aetna as opposed to SOMA or AMSA?

I do not have any dependents but that may make the difference between them.

Both insurance plans are pretty crappy in my opinion-they are basically only good for catastophic type stuff. I have the SOMA insurance, and from what I have heard from other classmates that this one is a little bit better than the one from UNE. Apparently there have been problems with the UNE insurance covering a lot of things they should have been covering. I don't know the extent of it or if the problem has been worked out or not.

Like I said they are both crap insurance. Basically gives you the basic coverage needed to attend school. Don't know what your situation is (age, married status) but if you can still be covered by your parents insurance I would consider that, or if you are married consider going on your spouses. As soon as my husband is eligible for ins at his work I am dumping this plan and getting on his.

Just do some research and see which one fits your needs best

Also, I just want to report that although its was not a major dumping, the snow gods have blessed us humble folk in Vermont with some fluffy white goodness. We were robbed of it all weekend when a blizzard tore through southern New England. NYC has no purpose for a foot of snow...I DO!

So, am I the only one who has yet to get mail from school about how to get the ball rolling? I still can't believe I am actually a medical student and I keep thinking I'll get a letter saying "Sike" your not in! 😱
No, but really I'm patiently awaiting the packets of juicy info... trying not to be anxious. I hope I'm not alone in my angst. Also, it is SUPER hard to apply myself this semester (my last) as undergrad! I'm ready to learn the good stuff.
Here's a question for everyone...
My school has a combo with University of Miami Med. so it would be possible to take gross anatomy this summer before leaving for Maine. My advisor has suggested this as a great way to warm up and have an edge later, but I'm not sure about it. 😕 Is anyone else planning on doing this? Or, if you had the opportunity would you use your last free 3 months to start working your butt off early? Your comments would be appreciated! I'm sure it's intense, but it may be a good way to get ready. 🙄 Just don't know.

i think that we are getting our acceptance packets in feb.- that's what my acceptance letter said- i got that last week. perhaps they are sending out all of our packets at the same time. sorry that you have to wait for so long, that's a major harsh of the mellow. cheers. karhu.

I agree with Karhu on your question. Since UNECOM has 2nd best anatomy program in the country, I am sure we will learn everything there is to learn by the time first semester is done.

If you are you will be happy to know there is nordic center a few miles from campus. 60$ season pass 40k trails classic and skate. There is a strong contingency of us who go most days and try to tour in the whites when time allows on weekends. They have great milk, beef, cheese at the farm/xc center too.

The UNECOM off-campus housing listings are up for anyone interested. I'm searching through them now...some of the apts seem great until I get to the part that there are no laundry facilities.

Any current UNECOM student know of an available apt in JULY (Year round) , 1BR apt w/ kitchen, living room, furnished or unfurnished, w/ Laundry facilities to boot? There are some nice ones in Portland but I'd like to live closer to UNECOM for convenience. Thanks! 🙂

I would like to go and see Portland. last time when I came for interview I did not have time. I hope this time I will.

Janelle here one of the ms1's and we have for your viewing pleasure on Monday the 14th ( yeah that's right Valentine's day!)8-10 Physiology, 10-12 Our first Population Health class, and 1-2 Bacteriology lecture along with a lab that either runs 2-3:30 or 3:30-5. Nayhow I doubt it would be a problem to sit in on the classes it happens quite a bit this time of the year ( actually all year!) If you want to you can check in with James and he may be able to pair you with someone but I promise we are all very talkative ( it's getting us to shut up that's the hard part 😉 haha ) We are actually at a lull in exams so we may be pretty relaxed too ! ( I always feel bad for people who interview and tour during exam days we look so doom and gloom 🙂 )

It really hasn't hit me yet..although I've received the acceptance letter, just filed the FAFSA, and am now looking for apts, it really won't hit me until I'm there! I have booked my flight and all, and a kind MS1 offered me a place to stay. Lets just say his innitials are ML and wears a cap. hehehe. He is a great guy... That was my impression of most of the people attending UNE when I interviewed. Any ideas of a gift... something that UNECOM students need right about now.

I will definitely be sitting in on a few classes and participating in Journal club. Amy D has invited me to sit in. I don't know how many people actually show up to this. But I will see.

BTW, I am thinking of renting a car from Boston and driving up, rather then taking the train. This drive is okay right?? no major complications? Oh and this will sound odd to most... but I heard there are tolls... how much are they? Do I need to have change with me... how does it work? 😱 I know some are like yeahhhh where is this guy frommmm the moon. Nooo noooo.. Canada eh! We don't have too many tolls up here. These are usually ulternative routs and most people don't take them.

I am planning to visit Portland. Prob Sunday evening. Any ideas? Any new students want to meet up?

BTW2. I will be the one that looks out of place on Sunday or Monday. you can tell that I am not interviewing since, I won't be wearing a Jacket and tie.
