Hey kiddos, I found this cool quiz on one of the SDN posts that actually matches you w/ a specialty based on your personality, leadership style, etc. Just wanted to share for those of you addicted to SDN like me.

In an ideal world, I'll become either a dermatologist, pediatrician, or obstetrician based on my personality alone...we'll see what really unfolds. 🙂
Here's the link: http://www.med-ed.virginia.edu/specialties/

Hey docbill - I'm in New Hampshire and might be interested in a trip up to Maine. PM me with more details!

i have to read an article entitled, "action potential duration restitution and alternans in rabbit ventricular myocytes"....how long until we start classes again??!?!?!?

Anyone get the acceptance packet yet...it's taking forever 🙂

btw, Happy pre-Valentine's day! 😍

I haven't received anything yet either... I am trying to get started on the apartment hunt. Has anyone secured a place yet? I know it's early but I'm afraid to wait too long... 😱
PS- If anyone knows.... Is Main Street a nice area?

Thanks all,
Momo

Hi Momo7430,

I'm actually looking at main st too. I'm from FL and won't be flying up til mid March....I spoke to Steve Ebling (one of the contacts) and he said apts go fast. So I actually sent money to hold an apartment. I'm taking a chance but Ihear it's nice since med students are living all around the area which is what I want. Good luck w/ your search. 🙂

Ha! I also s/w Mr. Ebling, he said he has 2 two brms at 900 ea., did you get a 1 or 2 bedroom? He told me that he's rented 2 of 4 apts that he had. The remaining 2 are 2 bdrms. I really wanted a 1 bedroom, plus I thought 900 was kind of steep. Who knows! I don't want to be homeless come July. LOL

i'm going to Maine in early March to look for an apt. My boytoy is moving with me so we are hunting for a 2br. i'm excited to get the housing issue taken care of. can't wait to meet you all.

He sappdog, welcome aboard. We are all looking forward to staring classes. I have a bit of an uneazy feeling, butterflies, insecure about how my first semester will go. Will I be able to cut it etc... but I was told most people have this feeling and it we will be fine.

What kind of odd mindless jobs have you been doing?

Jobs... The first part of the summer I worked as an electrician apprentice - installing wires, outlets, switches, lights, fans, ovens, microwaves etc. Currently I am working for CIGNA Health insurance processing medical ins. claims. It has taught me a lot about how doctors and hospitals bill for their services! So that part of it is cool, but it is mindless just staring at the computer all day deciding whether ppl get paid or not. But it is a blessing to be making decent money 'til school starts.

I am totally ready for school, but just preparing myself for a long distance relationship! My girlfriend is from Atlanta... it was so hard, b/c I got into PCOM GA as well - she is definitely grieving right now. But we both now that UNE blows many other schools completely out of the water!

Anyone else having the same relationship scenario??? If so - how is it going?

Can't wait to meet all of you! It is definitely going to be an adventure. Talk to you later!

Excellent.. now I know who to go to for help installing electrial wires.
I can only guess it will help you with medicine. Since it is all plumming and wiring anyway.

Well if it makes you feel any better, I will also be dealing with a long distance relationship. It can actually be a good think. you won't be terribly destracted with trying to find a girl friend. Since you know you have one. Also everytime people meet up... after a long time away from each other... thinks are more funnnnn  🙄 My GF and I did this before.

PS. I guess a note to most single people. Dating people in your class is not always the best idea. You are always in the same place at the same time.. it can be a true test.

Hi everyone,

I am actually at UNE now. I sat in on a couple of classes this morning and it was re-assuring that it is not terribly tense or stressful. It was easy going most are on their labtops... not necessarely following lectures.

It is actually a good idea and come and visit. I am really glad I did come. Since it gave me a chance to realize what I am getting myself into. The school is great. The same opinion I got the first time I was here. The surounding is as amazing. Beautiful snow and sunshine. It was a bit chilly this morning.. but not so bad now.

I did get lost like 20 times getting from Portland airport to UNE. But to be fair. I did not have great directions and I did not have a map.

I did come to a great realization... (some of you will have the same feeling) I will be moving to a really small city. Since I live in Toronto NOW... big CITY. 3 Million or so people. Adjusting to small town life will be interesting. The good thing is that for the first 2 years, I will not have time for too much other than studying. I am sure it will be a bit difficult at first.. but I will adjust... just in time to move back to a bigger city.

PS. Where are the first years that are on SDN?

hahah I spoke to Mr. Ebling too and he seemed to have a cool place going...but I think the rent is kinda steep so I may just look for something around the area. he does have a nice setup though and most med students live around the area which is tite...

900 way too much. I would definitely not do that.. go for roomy. It is much cheaper. You won't be there very often anyway. You will be studying on campus.

The lists grows on... new people, please add your name to the list.
Hope to get at least 10% of the class. ~13 -15

i totally hear the long distance relationship thing. my boyfriend is in the pHd program here at SUNY Upstate Medical University..so there is not a chance that he will be able to come to maine with me. but, we both look at it as our time to get our degrees and then when it comes time for residency we will try to be in the same vicinity. perhaps i can get a rotation site up this way too! in the end, what is meant to be is meant to be... 🙂 viva maine! 😀

i'm headed up to maine on march 11th, but from reading everyone's postings i'm starting to feel it is a bit late. maybe i should head up earlier? i would really like a 1 bdr...not that i don't love my fellow classmates, but i think i'm ready for some solo living 🙂
haha

ps HAPPY LATE VALENTINES DAY!!! 😍

I wonder what would happen if I stoped posting here.. The number of posts would go down to <100. Wow... anyone else sick of seeing me talk to myself. hehehe

BTW.. the class is full. Unless people withdraw.

BacT will definitely make you wonder if med school is for you.

Is BacT that bad? It will be all over soon. YOu will move on to something more fun and more interesting.

I have a question for present UNE students. Do we have insurance coverage when we go to do clinical electives. I was looking at possible places to do 4th year electives and I realized most ask if you have 1 to 3 million coverage. Is this covered by the school or will we have to buy that ourselves. Does anyone know if UNECOM plans to get more hospitals on its list of training sites.

Thanks
BA

BacT is an interesting course it just requires riducluous amounts of memorization..not to mention the memorization needed for our other 5 courses.

I dont think UNE is adding more clinical sites. The third years sites allow each of us a chance to go to a system of hospitals/clinics to complete our core required rotations. 4th year (although there are some required like OMM and AHEC) you go where you want...you set it up etc. This is your audition for residencies and further exploration of your aspirations.

I beleive UNE insurance is responsible for you while on rotations...you still have personal health coverage, but we are under the big umbrella of UNE's relationship with these hospitals.

Back to the bugs

i was excited to see how far our thread has moved up the list...

so i thought i might help it move up even more 🙂

p.s. t-minus 5 or so months!!! 👍 👍

Thanks for the response.

Regarding the insurance. I am refering to malpractice insurance and not personal health coverage. I guess the best thing is ask the clinical coordinator when we get to third year. I know it is kind of far down the road.. but things do flight by fast.

Yeahhhh we are really getting up there. We have one of the most active class thread.

I can't wait till we get the pipline group. That will help me wean off SDN.
I wish I could block this site... that way I can get more productive things done.

Can you belive it... just over 5 months left. It seems like yesterday we were applying for medical school.

has anyone received this so-called mailing from UNECOM yet? just curious since feb. is begining to wrap down.

i'm headed to maine the weekend of the 11th to go apartment hunting if anyone else will be in town then!

have a great weekend all!

just so you know...school will be locked up the weekend of march 11 and most of us gone so it might make it more difficult to cruise around school and check out places that are typically rented to med students.

Hey everybody

I'm a UNECOM 2nd year and I just wanted to let anyone know who doesn't already have a house that a buddy of mine from the area is looking to rent. It's a nice place that he's done a whole lot of work to. Great location, near town but not in the town. For those of you familiar with the area it's on the far side of Westbrook skating rink in Biddeford. He can give you all the details but it's year round, 3-4 bedrooms, I think he was looking for $1200 including some utilities. Anyways, if your interested he's a good guy and his number is 207-590-2407. His name is Chris.

Congratulations on getting in, have a great couple of months before school starts and do fun things.

still waiting for info from UNECOM....where is the love?? 😉

thanks for the info mcandy! i totally forgot about spring break. what do you mean it will be difficult to check out places that are typically rented to med students? do landlords tend not to show places when students are gone? any info would be helpful so i can possibly change my plans.

thank you!

I think what he means is that some of the places on hill beach where student live, will have no one there to show you the place. Most landlords own these places as cabin and may live far away.

then again.. I could be wrong.

just moving this thread back where it belongs.... 🙂

Maybe that med students won't around to show you the places they stay in??? I don't know what he meant. Bacteriology is taking a toll on his constitution.

The landlords will be as available as any time.

Maybe you can call UNE housing?

:luck:

thanks for the info everyone.

i haven't had a problem so far finding people to show me apartments.

i'm so excited! 🙂

speaking of apartments,
has anyone secured one yet?

to my surprise, a majority of places won't let you secure until june, either that or you have to start paying rent asap. hmmm...interesting.

i just want a little place, a few rooms, hopefully a window, running water...you know...all the luxeries!

😛

i'm going to biddeford next weekend. i hope that i can just go and find a place and sign and be done. i think that i'm dreaming a bit big. docbill, did you find a apt when you were in biddeford last week? i just want something that's not too dumpy or in a bad neighborhood. i heard that the apts in the old mill building were not the best...does anyone know what those apts are like? (i'm talking about the building with the brick walls, high ceilings). sorry if reading this post is like reading a 3rd graders writing...i just go out of work at a clinic and 7 people walked in 15 mins before closing wanting strep tests! ciao.

Hey Karhu (and alllll)

I did not go to to find a place last week. So I guess the answer is NO.
I am not too concerned at this time. I will take care of that in April. I am doing this for a few reasons.

I know that 2nd year students are leaving. Which means all the places they have been renting is going to be available. Plus, I will have to have a roomate because I have no money to rent on my own. So someone will rent a house on hill beach, and they will have a little closet to rent out and I will take it. The last and most important reason... I HAVE NO MONEY to put deposit. hehehe :meanie:

Nothing from UNECOM yet...just got a form today in the mail from Financial Aid to return. We can lend a max of $189,000 from Fed Stafford Loans..yay. I need 'money money money'. Anybody get anything else? It's almost the end of Feb. hmm

OTHERS MAY GIVE YOU ALL A DIFFERENT NOTION ABOUT THE HOUSING SCENE HERE, BUT I FOUND IT VERY EASY. I LOOKED IN JUNE WHEN SECOND YEARS WERE LEAVING ON ROTATIONS AND FOUND A YEAR ROUND, THREE BEDROOM, OCEAN VIEW IN BIDDEFORD POOL (2.5 MILES TO SCHOOL) FOR 980 PER MONTH FURNISHED. I KNOW ANOTHER IN MY CLASS WHO WAS EXCEPTED A WEEK BEFORE SCHOOL AND GOT A YEAR ROUND PLACE (2BDRM) ON HILLS BEACH ABOUT A MILE FROM SCHOOL. THERE ARE PLACES ADVERTISED ON THE BULLETIN BOARDS AT THIS VERY MOMENT. THAT SAID, RELAX AND ENJOY YOUR FREEDOM.

GIOIA FROM PLANET TARDO (TARDIS?)..MY BLOOD PRESSURE CUFF WOUND IS FESTERING... 😴

Hey all - I got in last semester, didn't know this forum thingy exists and never done one so excuse any initial f-ups on posts, hahaha - but good times!

On the note of living and all that - would the UNECOM residence or housing staff know anything about where most students live in the area and whatnot - thinkin of goin up there next week to look around and ask some questions and wasn't sure if they'd know squat about it... MCANDY (or anyone else who knows) - you said people would be gone the weekend of the 11th, ya'll gonna be around still for the 7th through 10th? Thanks!

CONGRATS TO EVERYONE!!! 😀

we have class that week... BUT we have 3 tests (tues, thurs, fri) so don't plan on much free time for the MSI's that week...
