Nothing from UNECOM yet...just got a form today in the mail from Financial Aid to return. We can lend a max of $189,000 from Fed Stafford Loans..yay. I need 'money money money'. Anybody get anything else? It's almost the end of Feb. hmm

yep, same here. I received confirmation for my 1st deposit but not my 2nd. I had to call Lisa to make sure they received the $1000.

no i wasn't successful either. i'm just going to wait until we get our packet-o-information from UNECOM. hopefully that will have more insight...whenever that may be.

Hey everyone...congrats! I'm a 4th yr and can't wait to finish up, but of course, still waiting for the ACGME Match :scared: Feel free to e-mail me ([email protected]) if you have any questions. Also, if you need medical equipment, I have them too.

Enjoy your last few months of true freedom 😉

Hi-
Congratulations and welcome to UNE. I am a second year selling a house and a car. PM for details.

Hey Farhan, that's great! Minus $1000 out of your pocket into your student account. Now it's official!

--noticed classes were cancelled due to the snow storm today. guess that calls for more 😴 for current MSIs.

I definetly slept in today... (probably taking two nyquill last night because of my nasty cold helped a little bit) but now i'm studying "bugs and drugs" (bacteriology and pharmacology) hope everyone is doing well... we're ALMOST to spring... YAY 😀

ack... Colds are not good. Imagine losing your voice and sounding like a monster for a week. It happened to me. Thank God I have my voice back. Hope everyone is doing well and yes, spring is right around the corner. yay! 🙂

ugh i have a cold too. a nasty one. i decided that the worst time to have a cold is when you have to wear a face mask all day and keep your hands sterile. all i can say is i feel for surgeons when they are sick and have to operate. 👎
UNE2009LMD, i think it is funny you use the word "yay!" because i always do, and everyone always picks on me!

still no love from UNECOM...anybody get anything? hmmm...something tells me I should call Lisa to ask one main question "When?"

It's 60 here in the sunshine state now and that's pretty cold considering it's summer year-round---got to get used to the 'below 0' degree, freeze-your-arse off weather again. 😎

i emailed lisa to ask her if they received my second deposit ok, and indirectly i asked when the mailings were going out. she said she didn't know when but that student services, alumni, and recruitment (or something like that) would most likely be sending them "soon". whatever "soon" may be.
hope that helps.

oh yes, and 60's sounds like a HEAT WAVE compared to upstate new york!

🙂

Again??? What do you mean? Have you lived in a cold climate before? I am in Chattanooga, TN right now and we are having some nice weather as well! I will have to get used to the weather up in Maine again... I lived there for most of my life before I went to college. But you know what they say about Maine - It is the way life should be! True in some regards, not in the winter though.
I haven't received anything yet either. I am anxious to get more info. Is anyone else applying for the NHSC scholarship? I did. Any other scholarships out there??? I am applying for the Academic Merit Scholarship and the Tribute Award as well. I have got to seriously investigate how I am going to pay for this pricey investment!
I watched a surgery the other day! It was so neat. The doc removed both ovaries and appendix, the L ovary had 3 cysts on it, and they remove the appendix as a precautionary measure for the future. Pretty interesting - can't wait for med school. Talk to you guys later.

Well sappdog, you could always apply for the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program (AFHPSP) - of course then you owe your life to the military 😀
It's really a great deal actually!
I hear ya on the surgery though - I've been in a bunch of orthopedic surgeries - amazing stuff! It's like being in wood shop - coooooool as hell!
Have a good one!

YEah.. I lived in Quebec City for 3 year. 6 hours north of Portland Me. It was very cold. But very nice spring and fall. And all winter long it was sunny.

I actually prefer 4 seasons over one season... aka. Florida/southern states.

Yep, I'm pretty used to the cold since I went to undergrad up north and lived through snow storm after freakishly cold snow storm. Ever fall in 4 feet of snow and struggle to get up? yes, I admit, I have been through all that. I have the winter clothes stored in boxes and next yr, they'll def make their grand appearance!
I filed the fafsa and received a form from Financial aid to pick a lender so they could send me a Master promissory note. Scholarships sound good. I need to start looking to see if I should apply to anyone of those...

I'm really looking forward to the 4 seasons again. Summer all yr round is nice but monotonous. I need to see the leaves change colors, ya know what I mean? 🙂

When did you receive a form from Finanaical aid? I just filled out my FAFSA about 2 weeks ago so maybe that is why I haven't received a form yet. Hopefully. j

🙂

can you believe in less that 5 months we will be in maine!!!

👍

I received the form last week. It took about 3 wks for me to get it. I was so excited to get something even though it was just from fin. aid!

I know! t-minus 5 months and counting!!!

Have a great Friday everyone!! 🙂

hey guys- i haven't received anything from financial aid yet...or my acceptance packet like promised. i don't want to call lisa lane b/c i'm sure everyone has been bugging her for them. will someone give a shoutout when they get theirs so we can all be looking out for ours??!! i just got back from the great city of biddeford. i actually looked at some pretty nice apartments and was quite impressed. i'm living in burlington vermont right now and as far as asthetics and great places for young people (ie bars, restaurants, bike paths, etc) i'm really spoiled. its gonna be a transition for me to be in a city that's not based around recreation, tourism, and college students/young people. anyhoo, i'm excited to get my apartment and get going with this huge venture!! ciao.

i applied for the NHSC scholarship too. still waiting to hear back from them as well as UNE financial aid. i have been pretty slack about looking for other sources for paying b/c i'm really banking on NHSC...either now or for the loan repayment program. i've spoken to a few docs about the whole loan thing and they all seem to be pretty lacadasical about it all, so i'm trying to adopt that attitude b/c there are going to be many more things to be stressed about in the coming months!

Hey UNE2009LMD,
So where in the world in Florida are you from? I live in South Fla... in Coral Springs (near Ft Lauderdale-ish). I am so excited about getting to a place with four seasons. I too lived in the cold briefly, I'm orig from NJ. But last time I was in the snow I froze and I dropped my purse in the slush getting out of the car. LOL
I just secured an apartment and I'm going next weekend to see it and make sure it's not closet-sized. I am stoked because it has wood floors, everyone there is like "big deal", but I'm sure you can relate to how different and exciting it is. I'm like Yey! No ceramic tile!!
I am finding myself driving around now though, thinking... Florida is so beautiful and I am shocked to find myself missing it already. Oh, well I guess I can always visit my fam frequently! Plus it's not like a vacation state when you live there, so maybe I will learn to appreciate it again. Anyway, just wanted to say hi to a fellow Floridian. Have you found a place to live yet? I think there is one girl from Florida who will be in my building, but I think she's a MSI now. The place is on State Street in Biddeford.
PS- forgive any spelling errors, it's past my bedtime but I'm an SDN junkie.
Goodnight, maybe we will chat soon.

MOMO don't worry, this time next year we will all be asking to come with you to visit the family. I am not officially sick of this weather. SNOW go AWAY.

Good news on finding a place. I guess.. from what I recall. State street in Biddeford is like downtown biddeford.

My wife was just accepted to UNE for the fall term in Bio Med studies. So were coming out from San Francisco in August! We are very excited about this change in life as well as seasons. Any ideas regarding how to set up housing ahead of coming out there? I can't seem to find any good online resources for locating rentals in the Portland area... Thanks!

Did you try the "Portland Press Herald" there's a free weekly newpaper in Portland too that had some rentals as well. I'm not sure of the name of the paper, but I read it when I was in Portland over the weekend....I'm really a lot of help aren't I? haha. Do you have a job set up yet?

Your wife was accepted to DO progr or Biology program?

Either way here are some of campus listings:

These tips are good, thanks... She was accepted into the Med Bio - pre PA program as a transfer she has a few prereqs to do but will apply to either DO for 06 or PA program for next Summer depending on her MCAT. ... I'm on the same path as well and wont be working. I gave that up last year (thank god 😱 ). I'm on the same track as my wife but about 2 semesters behind in science prereqs. I will also apply to UNE, fingers crossed.

Thanks again...

Just wanted to share with everyone...

I am planning to go into primary care, and was considering the application for the NHSC but then I read the following on their website under

NHSC FAQ:

(Question)"16: What if I change my mind about going into primary care after I have accepted the scholarship or while in residency?

Answer: Accepting an NHSC scholarship is a serious commitment. If, after graduation, you enter training that is not approved by the Scholarship Program, or you otherwise fail to comply with your contract, you will be liable for financial damages equal to 3 times the amount of your scholarship plus interest."

I though Holy Moly!! 😱 Maybe not. 👎

It seems a little scary to me, imagine THREE times what they gave you!

Just wanted to give a heads up in case anyone wasn't aware of the full picture.

We are all on the journey to Vast Debt Land, but I figure this was a red flag.
I'd rather take my chances and just pay my own debt! 😎

Goodnight all,
Momo

Hi momo, i already replied to you in the other thread, but overall NHSC is a real serious undertaking, but with the negative there's also many positives...ie debt free 6 years after graduation! But the heads up is nice for anyone who's not truly serious about rural/underserved medicine. If you are interested in working in a regional hospital, NHSC is not for you. Its probably a pretty tough population of people to work with, but its certainly not for everyone. thanks for drawing it to everyone's attention.

Hey all.
I just had my first let down of finding an apartment. My boyfriend and I found this awesome place and were assured that we could move in July 1. Well, since the place is empty right now, the owner turned around and told us that we could have the place if we moved in in May. yikes! can't afford that! So just a heads up if you guys are looking at empty spaces- make sure you don't have to move in ASAP. This place was listed in the UNE website (30 May Street). it was gorgeous and if any of you are planning on moving to Biddeford in May it would be great. So we are beginning at square one again! I've made calls to alot of the apts in the Journal Tribune and most are also open ASAP. is anyone as obsessed with finding an apartment as I am. I think i spent so long being obsessed with pre-reqs, mcats, and applications that now i'm taking all the energy into finding a place to live...its my new hurdle to jump over. i think its my OCD that will get me thru med school!!! haha. Kwaheri (swahili for goodbye)

Yep, my compulsive behavior will def get me through med school too 👍 A little bit of compulsiveness is good in medicine! 🙂

btw, Have a great spring break everyone! I'm on it now and soaking up the sun, going out til dawn, (can't do that in med school!..haha), and getting tan before I leave for the cold..and return to my pale self. haha. 🙂

btw, how are you all getting your cars to maine? any recommended companies?

hi karhu,

yes i too have found that many places want to rent ASAP...but, if you call around there are definately some that are not available until june/july. i am going up this weekend and will be looking at 9 units, 7 of which won't be ready until june/july..which is perfect since i am not planning on moving until july. 🙂

oh yes...any anyone else...one of the landlords i talked to said he was showing a place to someone from florida this weekend who would be in the class of 09. any of you headed up there this weekend??

🙂
happy wednesday! only one more week till :luck: day

Hi Docmz,
I am from Fla and going up this weekend to meet my new landlord on Friday. I am praying that the apartment is not scary. I still cannot believe that I rented over the internet but the millions of picts he sent were nice and I don't have to move in until July.
I guess I'm gonna see it in the snow! LOL 😀

Anyway, I'll let you all know what the real estate is like! LOL

glad to see you're coming up to join us here in nice warm maine... 🙁 To answer your question, there is NO way you can survive without a car... (very little housing close enough to walk/bike) - preceptorships 5 or 6 times in your first year. you get the idea 😉 Hope that helps. Ok, enough procrastinating... back to bacteriology! Have a great evening everyone
