At least you'll be able to find me from the crowd.

I don't have anything going on right now, so....
Totally unnecessary. I already know what you look like, and even if I didn't, I'd figure out who you were b/c I'd hear you running your mouth. :meanie: 😛 Come over and help me pack up my apartment then. I'll be your best friend....

princess, you've been out of school, what, like two years? No way, you're still a kid. 😀 I have to tell you guys a funny story. There was a guy at the Case second look who was a non-trad in his 40s. Guy is literally twice the age of most of the other students, right? So he tells me that the trads were asking him if he's some applicant's dad. :meanie:

Yeah, I'm pretty loud...and I laugh a lot.

Sure, where do you live? But I'll be your best friend ONLY if you come to UMich. 😉

Man, that's a lot of pressure to put on a girl pre-second look. But I'll see what I can do. In the meantime, I better get back to work. I'll talk to you all later.

 No she didn't.

anyone know how to go about asking a school to match a financial aid offer? i have decent money from michigan, but a little more from another school...like $3K. do you ask them just to give you that extra money, or just vaguely ask for me, hoping they'll give you lots more? ahaha wow do i sound greedy! just curious though 😳

ps i can't go to the chat tonight (darn research subjects!), but if no one knows, can someone ask this question for me? i'd be so grateful! thanks 😍

I think you should send them a letter along with the official scholarship document.

It depends on the school and your full tuition there. (if you go to a 40k/yr school and got a 3k scholarship and 20K at Umich with a 1k scholarship, then it's hard to match the offer.) But it can't hurt to ask.

Light or heavy as the heart may be, it doesn't answer the question. I assume it means, "no, I'm not?" Anyway, all joking aside, there's no rush to be older. If I had my s*** as together as you trads do, I wouldn't be going to med school in my 30s in the first place.

What question? Now I am confused. It means, "How dare you?"....kinda...

If anyone want the chat transcript I got it!

I just looked at the list too; the only ones I saw were Sail and almost_there. (Good thing Sail is coming; otherwise I'd be the oldest. :meanie: )
If my arthritis wasn't so bad right now, I'd beat you with my cane for that remark!

happydays said:
Speaking of Sail, he's disappeared since the finaid info. Must have decided to go elsewhere...🙁
QofQuimica said:
You're right; I haven't seen Sail around lately either. Maybe he's just busy at work. Actually, this whole thread has been pretty quiet except for you, dajimmers, and me. 😛
I am still bitter about financial aid (I didn't call... I'd already requested a fin. aid meeting during 2nd look, so I figured I'd just wait for that) but that's not why I haven't been around.

My finals begin the Monday after 2nd look 😱 , so between the regular end-of-semester stuff, and pre-studying for finals (along with squeezing in a very healthy year-end social schedule 😉 ) I've been pretty busy. I have to stay away from the computer entirely or I quickly waste away half of my planned study time!

Woah, I didn't realize you were taking classes. That sucks. 👎 Hope your finals go well.

princess, my question was what you meant. LMAO, and people wonder why the internet is a barrier to communication instead of a facilitator.... 😛

You only have to submit copies if they request it, which they don't do for everyone. If they haven't requested them, you don't need to send them. If they have, sooner is probably much better than later.

& Welcome! 🙂

I don't think any informed observer would equate my current level of academic effort with any word close to loser! I'm calculating how little I can score on my finals in order to sneak away with "B-"s

Could someone please PM me the chat transcript??

Thank you!!

michprosp has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
<JJm1> 2,0we get 11 weeks off
<mmeera> and what do most people do during the summer?
<Debbie82> what are u going to do during the summer?
<dianaM1> 4,0i think about half of our class is doing research here, mostly funded by
4,0UM
<JJm1> 2,0m1 year started august 1st and ends may 27th
<Debbie82> Are either of you involved with Global Reach?
<dianaM1> 4,0some people are traveling, working elsewhere, going abroad like JJ, or
4,0hanging out with family like me
<JJm1> 2,0so even though it's longer than for the undergrads, it's awesome because
2,0we get a summer off!
<michprosp> did any of you do the pre-summer program?
<JJm1> 2,0med school is year round after that
<michprosp> if so, how did you like it... how long was it?
<Debbie82> Global Reach anyone???
<mmeera> pre-summer program?
<Debbie82> pre-matriculation
<JJm1> 2,0i'll take the global reach question
<michprosp> sorry - that's what I meant
<JJm1> 2,0yeah, i'm on the exec board of global reach...
<Debbie82> great JJ...what kind of things are being done this summer through Global
Reach?
<JJm1> 2,0and i'm the president of a BRAND NEW group at michigan - universities
2,0allied for essential medicines
<JJm1> 2,0we're going to be a university-wide org, but global REACH is very supportive
2,0of us, so it's way cool
abc12345678 has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
<dianaM1> 4,0sorry neither of us did pre-mat, but from what i heard it was a lot of

<london> Do u know anyone who
<JJm1> 2,0you can apply for MHIRT, which is a research fellowship for
2,0underrespresented populations (you don't have to be a minority to apply)
michprosp has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
<london> oops
<JJm1> 2,0...but other than that, not much via the med school, though they have a
2,0massive number of contacts, etc. to get you going
<JJm1> 2,0i'm going to paraguay to shadow docs/ participate in rural health care
2,0teams. i'm doing that because a guy in my house is friends with one of the
2,0highest-ranking health officials in paraguay
<dianaM1> 4,0anyone have other questions (while JJ covers teh abroad question)?

<michprosp> yeah - is there anything you don't like about being a student at Michigan?
<mmeera> do most students buy books?

london has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
Megs143 has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
<JJm1> 2,0and i'll mention that some of our classmates are going africa, asia
<dianaM1> 4,0i would say that most students pick and choose books to buy
<dianaM1> 4,0i've bought 3, and i haven't found it necessary for most sequences
<dianaM1> 4,0the notes are sufficient, or you can find them at the library
<Megs143> is there any way to buy used books?
<mmeera> do professor's supply notes before class?
<london> do yodo you go to class every day?
<dianaM1> 4,0usually M2s will be selling their books
<Megs143> Nice~!
london Quit (Web Browser closed)
london has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
<dianaM1> 4,0yes, in your courseppack you have the slides or notes for every single
4,0lecture
<JJm1> 2,0meera, we get a "syllabus" before each sequence
<JJm1> 2,0diana's got that one
<MeganRH> I am looking to purchase a house in the Ann Arbor area and it may be
difficult to find one within walking distance to the med campus, what is the
transportation situation if I am unable to walk to campus?
<JJm1> 2,0so as far as going to class goes...
<JJm1> 2,0it's about 50/50
<london> srry I'm still at work and trying to do 2 things at once.
<Debbie82> So with Global Reach the emphasis is on research? What about clinical
work or volunteer work in other countries, any of that going on this summer?
<dianaM1> 4,0i go to some lectures, but it's very flexible since all of our classes are
4,0taped
<JJm1> 2,0 1/2 go to class, half watch the lectures on videos
<dianaM1> 4,0so you can watch them at full speed, 2x the speed, pause them....it's
4,0really nice
<JJm1> 2,0so it's cool...michigan gives us the option to basically learn any way we
2,0want
<JJm1> 2,0yeah, and even 2.5x!
<mmeera> did you find the second look weekend helpful?
<JJm1> 2,0but i can't think that fast
<JJm1> computer
<dianaM1> 4,0in terms of transportation
<JJm1> 2,0hey debbie...
<dianaM1> 4,0your Mcard ID gets you free access to both ann arbor transport buses
4,0and umich buses
<dianaM1> 4,0generally parking is bad around the hospital, so a lot of people utilize
4,0the bus system
<JJm1> 2,0yeah, for faculty, global REACH is focused on research and large-scale
2,0collaboration with other med schools
<london> how did you find housing?
<JJm1> 2,0for student alliance for global
<JJm1> 2,0REACH
Ben has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
Ben has left the room
<MeganRH> are the buses reliable/fast? are there "commuter lots" to park in when
catching the bus if the routes don't go all the way to your doorstep?
Ben has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)

<JJm1> 2,0...a lot of it is focused on trip planning, fundraising, sponsoring lunch talks
2,0about global health topics, and even sponsoring groups like universities allied for
2,0essential meds
<Megs143> what about health insurance? Does everybody get the school insurance... it
seems really expensive!
<JJm1> 2,0(sorry to keep plugging UAEM - i'm just really excited aboutit)
<dianaM1> 4,0yes, the buses are very reliable and the schedules are posted
<dianaM1> 4,0there are commuter lots that you can buy a pass for and take the bus
4,0from
<dianaM1> 4,0a lot of people do that that are affiliated with the hospital
<MeganRH> excellent. thank you, diana.
<JJm1> 2,0global REACH can help connect you with volunteer / clinical work in other
2,0countries, but for M1s, the funding itsn't there
<MeganRH> do many students live in houses or far from campus?
<dianaM1> 4,0in terms of housing, a lot of people go on the housing tour on second
4,0look weekend
<dianaM1> 4,0if you're not coming to second look, there's info on teh website about
4,0different options
<JJm1> 2,0but it's another story for M4s. M4s can apply for a scholarship to do a
2,0rotation abroad, and each year, the dean has been ramping up funding, which is great.
<mmeera> was second look helpful, other than for housing?
<dianaM1> 4,0a lot of people live in the nearby apartment complexes (it's been dubbed
4,0the "white coat ghetto"
<JJm1> 2,0yeah, meera.
<michprosp> how much attention do the M1s get from faculty?
<Megs143> Has anyone checked out the medical frats?
<JJm1> 2,0 2nd look helped me get an idea re: who i'd be spending the next 4 yrs of
2,0my life with
<london> Is the money alotted by fin aid enough for housing?
<JJm1> 2,0and i was very satisfied with that i found -- the people at 2nd look were
2,0AWESOME!
<JJm1> 2,0and my classmates are, too. except for diana
<JJm1> 2,0🙂
<Megs143> i am thinking about getting a room in one...
<mmeera> thanks!
sarah579 has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
<JJm1> 2,0med frats...i'm in one
<dianaM1> 4,0the faculty are very accessible and approachable, and very open to
4,0shadowing-- i've had some great experiences
<Megs143> which one jj?
<michprosp> thx!
<JJm1> 2,0i'm in nu sigma nu. there are two others, phi rho and phi chi
<dianaM1> 4,0you can always email them with questions or talk after class
JennyMas has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
<JJm1> 2,0nu sig is all guys. phi rho is coed, close to campus, with food. and phi chi
2,0has sweet rooms but is a little far away.
<Megs143> i have been looking at phi rho.. have you seen the rooms or the house
there?
<michprosp> cool
<Debbie82> How often do you have PBL sessions?
<JJm1> 2,0oh PBL
<dianaM1> 4,0in general, money from financial aid should be enough to cover living
4,0expenses, teh big one obviously being housing
<JJm1> 2,0well, usually once a week
<JJm1> 2,0let me make a confession -
<JJm1> 2,0while i was applying to med school, i was enamored with PLB
<JJm1> 2,0PBL, sorry
<MeganRH> thanks for all your help
MeganRH Quit (Web Browser left the chat web page)
<dianaM1> 4,0phi rho is nice, my friend lives there and the perks are that it's so close
4,0by to the med school, a lot of very good food and community, and very cheap
<JJm1> 2,0but now that i'm in med school, i think it's cool, but i couldn't imagine doing
2,0much more of it
JennyMas has left the room
JennyMas has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
<JJm1> 2,0i almost went to a school that's 50% PBL, and i'm so glad i didn't
<Ben> I was wondering about this new "mandatory laptop" policy...is it really necessary
to purchase a new laptop or can I get by without one?
<JJm1> 2,0even though PBL sounds good, the big thing about your first two years of
2,0med school is learning the basic science of medicine
<JJm1> 2,0with PBL, you really need to learn it on your own
sarah23543 has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
<dianaM1> 4,0you can definitely get by without a laptop--there are multiple computing
4,0centers within the med school
<dianaM1> 4,0you have access to them with your keycard 24/7
<michprosp> are you exposed to the hospital at all during your first year?
london has left the room
<JJm1> 2,0so it helps to have lectures-- have world-renowned experts in their fields
2,0guide you through the massive amount of info. you need to know
<Ben> That's what I thought, thanks!
<Debbie82> JJ, doesn't the information "stick" better when teaching other people?
<dianaM1> 4,0obviously it's nice and convenient to have a laptop though
<Megs143> Cool thanks diana. I can't come to seond look weekend and i am traveling
this summer so phi rho seems like a good option for me!
<JJm1> 2,0yep, that's true
<Megs143> at least for the first year
<JJm1> 2,0but you can always go over it with your classmates
<JJm1> 2,0what i'm trying to say is that it's hard to know what to learn, what not to learn
2,0when you're in a full-on PBL curriculum
<dianaM1> 4,0yeah it will also give you a chance to meet other grad students who live
4,0there, not just med students
<Megs143> Diana, JJ do you guys have the school health insurance?
<JJm1> 2,0a lot of students in those schools can be learning things for the first time
2,0while they are studying for the boards. and i DEFINITELY would NOT want to be in that
2,0position
<dianaM1> 4,0I have GradCare yes
<JJm1> 2,0PBL can help put a social/clinical context to some of the stuff you'll be
2,0learning
<JJm1> 2,0but i couldn't imagine having to basically teach myself all this stuff on my
2,0own
Kavitha has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)

4,0works/matters more to you and the price
<mmeera> do you like having the online quizzes weekly? do most people take the

Emily_D Quit (Web Browser closed)
<JJm1> 2,0in my and diana's case...generally later
<JJm1> 2,0i generally take it on sunday
<dianaM1> 4,0haha
<sarah23543> hey jj, diana -- do you have other big exams a lot, in addition to quizzes?
<dianaM1> 4,0that's the beauty of flextime
<JJm1> 2,0but i've wanted to take it on friday. it's like a holy grail--but i've never been
2,0able to do it!
<JJm1> 2,0haha
<JJm1> laugh
<dianaM1> 4,0if i'm going out of town that weekend or have big plans, i'll take it on
4,0friday
<dianaM1> 4,0but otherwise to enjoy my week a little, i take it on sunday
<Kavitha> hahha so cute
<JJm1> 2,0we never have more than one exam in a week
<JJm1> 2,0so basically, in the middle of a sequence, it's a quiz
<michprosp> how long do those last - first two years?
<JJm1> 2,0at the end of a sequence, we have a practical and a final exam
<JJm1> 2,0M1: august 1st-ish to end of may
<JJm1> 2,0M2: mid-august to end of march, study for boards in april, then start m3
2,0year in may!
EmilyD has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)

<JJm1> 2,0haha, well...

EmilyD has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
<dianaM1> 4,0it depends on how you spread out your studying
<JJm1> 2,0some people are in the "monday morning crew" and take it at the very last
2,0minute, like at 7am
<sarah23543> so there's not a lot of extra work besides the quiz/exam? i just have a
friend at cornell, seems like she always has something due or something to study for,
and it seems to stress her out
<JJm1> 2,0others take it right at 3am on friday.
<mmeera> do you have quizzes for all the classes you are taking, or just one subject
each week?
EmilyD Quit (Web Browser moved off chat page)
EmilyD has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
<sarah23543> so i wondered if there were other assignments and things besides
quizzes
<sarah23543> at michigan i mean
<JJm1> 2,0at UMMS...there are the longitudinal cases
<JJm1> 2,0that's about it
<dianaM1> 4,0since our curriculum is organ-systems based, all the different "subjects"
4,0surrounding each organ system (ex. renal) will be tested that week
<JJm1> 2,0longitudinal cases = PBL
<Kavitha> how much time do you generally spend in class? (if you go to class...when are
classes usually out?)
<JJm1> 2,0depends. usually lectures are over by 12pm
<dianaM1> 4,0it's more integrated, but not necessarily harder, i think actually easier to
4,0understand
<mmeera> got it thanks
<JJm1> 2,0and labs are out by 4pm
<JJm1> 2,0if there's a lab that day
<Kavitha> wow, thats awesome
<JJm1> 2,0it's nice...michigan has more open time than some other med schools
<JJm1> 2,0yeah
<JJm1> 2,0listen, y'all...
sarah579 Quit (Ping timeout)

<JJm1> 2,0i was just at the AMSA national convention, and practically everyone from
2,0other med schools was salivating over our curriculum, flex time, etc
<Debbie82> JJ do you have a mentor? What kind of guidance is there?
<Kavitha> wow 🙂
<dianaM1> 4,0right now no one is assigned unless you take the initiative to see out
4,0someone
<dianaM1> 4,0M3 year we each get a faculty mentor
<JJm1> 2,0i think it'd be safe to say that a faculty member would be honored to be
2,0called a mentor by a UMMS student

<michprosp> Diana and JJ, what would you say you don't like about Michigan?
<JJm1> 2,0let's see if we have a canned answer...
<JJm1> Ann Arbor has beautiful springs—cool and green. Summers are even better,
warm to hot days and pleasant evenings. Fall is great too, with brisk days perfect for
football. And then there is winter—from about December through early March expect
chilly weather with some snow. This varies though—some years are very snowy and
other years yield only a few light snows. Bring boots, a hat, and a down jacket-- you’ll
<michprosp> (aside from the cold)
<JJm1> ****oo
<JennyMas> hey kavitha! i just saw you were here
<dianaM1> 4,0right now it's a gorgeous 65 degrees and sunny out
<Kavitha> hey Jenny!
<JJm1> 2,0for those of you coming to 2nd look...
<JJm1> 2,0it's probably going to be better than last year
<Debbie82> what's it going to be for the weekend
<JJm1> 2,0it snowed last year.
<JJm1> 2,0hopefully Dean Remick won't kill me for saying that
<dianaM1> 4,0i don't think anyone from cali came...

<JJm1> 2,0well....
<Kavitha> y'all too!! thanks! 🙂
<JJm1> 2,0i think parking could be a bit better
<JJm1> 2,0the winter does get long at times
<JJm1> 2,0but those don't really interfere with pursuing a great medical education
<JJm1> applause
<dianaM1> 4,0haha, JJs way too positive to answer that

<JJm1> 2,0for michigan students i believe it's 230

<dianaM1> 4,0it's more integrated, but not necessarily harder, i think actually easier to

<JJm1> 2,0after orientation, etc. some people break off into groups
<JJm1> 2,0it's just how it is with a group of 170 people
<JJm1> 2,0but it's not really that exclusive
<JJm1> 2,0we'll email the whole class about going out
<michprosp> cool - makes sense
<JJm1> 2,0and people are really friendly with each other
<JJm1> 2,0i like it
<JJm1> 2,0and i was nervous about it
<JJm1> 2,0because i hated the clique-y aspect of high school
<JJm1> 2,0and loved the fact that u-michigan was so massive
<sarah23543> so it doesn't feel too big?
<JJm1> 2,0but it's cool
<JJm1> 2,0well,
<JJm1> 2,0it's small
<dianaM1> 4,0i think it feels small just because compared to college and high school
4,0for me, the class size is tiny
<JJm1> 2,0but not as claustrophobic as i thought it would be
<michprosp> yeah 170 seems so small
<dianaM1> 4,0but relative to other med schools, it's big
<michprosp> yeah - does that make it feel like you don't get as much personal
attention/opportunity as at other smaller schools?
<Debbie82> Of the 170 are some students in a BA-MD program or something?
<sarah23543> yeah that's what i meant -- someone from michigan ugrad was saying
that her friends at umms sometimes have to kind of compete for opportunities
<sarah23543> just cause it's big for a med school class
<JJm1> 2,0opportunities...like what?
<JJm1> 2,0i don't feel like i'm competing in that regard
<JJm1> 2,0but then again, i went to u-m for undergrad, which was massive
Jeremy has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)

Jeremy has left the room
<sarah23543> i think for slots to work in a free clinic, or for funding to go abroad, that
kind of thing?
Jeremy has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
<dianaM1> 4,0i think there's as much personal attention as you want to seek out, the
4,0opportunities are there
<JJm1> 2,0M4s have limited funding for going abroad
<dianaM1> 4,0there is limited funding, slots for stuff, etc. but nothing to every put you off
4,0of something you're interested in
<JJm1> 2,0and slots to work in one of the free clinics is in high demand
<JJm1> 2,0but it's not crazy
<JJm1> 2,0and there's another free clinic
<Debbie82> I thought you said M4s get a lot of funding
<JJm1> 2,0and there are other funding sources for going abroad
<dianaM1> 4,0the administration will work with you to make it happen, if you take the
4,0initiative (more in terms of funding)
<JJm1> 2,0they do
<JJm1> 2,0but it's not enough for EVERYONE to go abroad
<JJm1> 2,0they have 44 scholarships
<JJm1> 2,0and there are 170 in the class
<JJm1> 2,0granted, not everyone goes abroad
<michprosp> can you go abroad without a scholarshiop?

2,0free summers i'll have...
<JJm1> 2,0yeah, there's the quito project
<JJm1> 2,0they go to quito, ecuador and run a free clinic and do much more
<JJm1> 2,0they fundraise a lot of $$$
<dianaM1> 4,0a couple people are doing an independent trip to uganda, they applied
4,0for funding elsewhere and got it
<JJm1> 2,0there are a lot of groups for going abroad during the summer
<JJm1> 2,0alright...any other burning questions?
<michprosp> if you guys were choosing between U Mich and other schools, what was
the final deciding factor? 🙂
<JJm1> 2,0the curriculum!
<JJm1> 2,0it's excellent
<JJm1> 2,0and it was sort of a PBL vs. mostly lecture/ some PBL (michigan's case)
<michprosp> cool
<amax> Regarding the curriculum, what do you think of the new thesis requirement?
<JJm1> 2,0?
<amax> I thought that the med school is requiring a thesis/research project (new
addition)? Maybe I'm wrong..
<krit82> hi all! i'm only here for one minute...
ChrisM1 has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
<dianaM1> 4,0for me, it was just that everyone here seemed to be enjoying school/life,
4,0i liked everyone i met
<michprosp> nice
<dianaM1> 4,0and it was a great opportunity to go to a highly ranked, in-state school
<Debbie82> hi Krit82
<michprosp> so you were both in-state...
<krit82> to follow up on that PBL comment, JJm1, do you think having mostly lecture with
some PBL gives you more flexibility? i'm comparing with cornell right now and kind of
concerned that i'd have to be there at 8:30am 3 times a week!
ChrisM1 is now a Room Moderator in
University_of_Michigan_Medical_School_Admissions_-_Interviewing (issued by
JJm1)
<krit82> hey deb!!
<JJm1> 2,0i don't get it...
<JJm1> 2,0so they have 830 class for PBL?
<JJm1> 2,0and it's required, right?
<JJm1> 2,0we do it, but it's at 9, not 830
<JJm1> 2,0and once a week
<krit82> ok, so just once a week
<JJm1> 2,0i honestly think that more than 2-3 hours of PBL a week is a total waste of
2,0time
<michprosp> do your PBL groups switch up every few weeks?
<krit82> sorry, i was saying that cornell has PBL 3 times a week at 8:30...once a week at
9 sounds better!
<JJm1> 2,0nah
<ChrisM1> when i was interviewing it seemed like every school had a variation of PBL
<JJm1> 2,0we have the same group for two years
dajimmers has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)

<JJm1> 2,0it's kinda cool. we're pretty tight.

<JJm1> The purpose of this component is to help students understand the importance
of viewing illness & health care from the patient's perspective. Pairs of students
are assigned to a family in the community. Regular visits give the students the
opportunity to get to know the family in the context of health care issues, and to
appreciate the impact of culture & health beliefs on the care of a patient. More
<dajimmers> hey everyone, sorry for joining late
<dianaM1> 4,0our PBLs are based on the sequence we're in....for musculoskeletal we
4,0would have an ongoing case for 3 weeks (the length of the sequence)
<JJm1> An unique aspect of UM is the Family-Centered Experience, where pairs of
students are assigned to a family dealing with a chronic illness. Another aspect is the
“longitudinal case studies” in which clinical cases are introduced over a 2-4 week
period in conjunction with the students’ core lecture series. What is most unique
about UM is the combination of ingredients though—great faculty, students, curriculum
<krit82> gotta run..i'm kinda lame! thanks for answering my question though, JJm1!
maybe i'll see you all in ann arbor next year 🙂
<JJm1> 2,0anyway, choose as you wish re: PBL, but if you ask a lot of current M1s here
2,0and at other schools...
<JJm1> 2,0we're 1/10 as excited about it as when we were applying
<krit82> hmmm that's an interesting perspective, jjm1! i get a lot of that...that it gets old,
but in the end it's supposedly valuable...
<sarah23543> hey chris, when you were deciding between schools, what made you go
for michigan?
<krit82> anyway bye everyone!!

2,0something else (i was choosing between duke and michigan for medical school)
<JJm1> 2,0sorry to come down that hard on i, but i mean well - really, i think it's

<ChrisM1> 2,0nice!

<JJm1> 2,0i LOVE that one!!!!!!

<JJm1> rooster
<michprosp> haha
<ChrisM1> 2,0so why i came to michigan, i thought the school had everything to offer
2,0that i wanted, plus it is costing me about half as much as duke, which is an issue for
2,0me
<sarah23543> yeah that definitely makes sense
<dajimmers> what are all your plans during the summer?
Megs143 Quit (Web Browser closed)
<JJm1> 2,0i'm going to paraguay
<ChrisM1> 2,0i'm working in a lab in trauma/burn that i work in as an undergrad and in
2,0my year off between undergrad and medical school
<JJm1> 2,0we'll need to wrap up in 15 mins, so ask those questions?
<JJm1> 2,0!
<dianaM1> 4,0i'm hanging around ann arbor and spending time with my family (i'm
4,0originally from ann arbor), taking some trips, and volunteering
<JJm1> 2,0anything and everything!
<ChrisM1> 2,0we have a summer biomedical research program here that funds
2,0students bt first and second year, which is quite helpful
<amax> Did any of you defer? Are you glad you did/didn't?
<michprosp> do you feel like a lot of the students come to Mich for surgery or ED
<Debbie82> during the school year did you do anything extracurricular? Clinic, research?
Did you have the time????
<JJm1> 2,0i may also try to crank out a publication while i'm not in paraguay (doing
2,0mostly shadowing and clinical work, and probably 2 additional wks of traveling in
2,0argentina), but it's a long shot
<ChrisM1> 2,0i feel like many of our classmates are interested in both surgery and ED
<dianaM1> 4,0i didn't defer but i took a year off, which for me was great to recharge, do
4,0a lot of things i wanted to do before committing to med school
<amax> Thanks!
<JJm1> 2,0i also took a year off - i did research here
<sarah23543> do residency directors like michigan grads so much b/c of the clinical
training there, or are you all just cool people?
<JJm1> 2,0we've got some students here who are interested in surg and ED
2,0(emergency...?)
<ChrisM1> 2,0mostly the latter
<sarah23543> i thought so
<ChrisM1> 2,0but i think also because of the clinical
truebluecoug has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
<michprosp> yeah - are things geared towards those specialties?
<michprosp> my interests are in neuro and peds
truebluecoug has left the room
truebluecoug has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
truebluecoug has left the room
<JJm1> 2,0yeah, UMMS is pretty specialty-oriented
truebluecoug has entered the room (hostname: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
<JJm1> 2,0and students here get into really competitive programs
<JJm1> 2,0but we also have very strong primary care depts.
<dianaM1> 4,0that being said, i'm interested in primary care, and i feel like the clinical
4,0experience and teh curriculum doesn't overlook that
<ChrisM1> 2,0talking w/ friends at michigan state and wayne state, i think our
2,0instructors/curriculum commmitee may put more emphasis on some fields
2,0(specialties) more than others such as primary care
<Debbie82> What about getting into competitive programs on the east coast...Difficult?
<JJm1> 2,0it's totally do-able
<michprosp> but that wouldn't prevent one from getting a good residency in a primary
care field right?
<JJm1> 2,0michigan is a net exporter
<ChrisM1> 2,0not at all
<JJm1> 2,0more people leave michigan to the east and west coasts than come here
<ChrisM1> 2,0no correlation
<JJm1> 2,0so definitely do-able
<JJm1> scream
<dianaM1> 4,0wow that was confusing
<truebluecoug> Sorry to get here so late, did any of you buy a condo in Ann Arbor? Do
you know any good realtors?
<ChrisM1> 2,0i'm just saying that we may have more exposure to sub-specialties than
2,0other schools more focuses on training primary care docs
<michprosp> oh yeah, what percent live in frats vs. white coat ghetto
<JJm1> 2,0most in the WCG
<JJm1> 2,0and by the way
<JJm1> 2,0it's not really a ghetto
<JJm1> 2,0in fact, i don't like the name
<ChrisM1> 7,0there are only 3 fraternities
<JJm1> 2,0some of us are in the frats, myself included
<ChrisM1> 7,0so most live in apartments
<sarah23543> but frats are a chance to live w/ different grad students, not just med?
<JJm1> 2,0nice color, chris.
<ChrisM1> 7,0i'm in an apt
<Debbie82> Do most people sign a lease at Second Look?
<ChrisM1> 7,0not in the WCG

<dianaM1> 4,0i live in teh ghetto, i like it and it's a fun community, short walk to the med
4,0school
<ChrisM1> 7,0no i think you are able to sign leases through the summer
<dianaM1> 4,0it's mostly apartments plus the nielsen court condos
<michprosp> thanks - good to know
truebluecoug has left the room
<dajimmers> any of you get your places in the summer? and any trouble doing it that
late (less options...)
<ChrisM1> 7,0i signed a lease in the middle of august with no problem
<Debbie82> Which is better Island Drive apart. or Med Center Courts apts?
<michprosp> chris - did you do the pre-matriculation program?

Here's a question I wish I'd asked: Do most apartments/condos (I know Med Center Court does) have A/C? 'Cuz it's only 70 out, and I'm dying in this heat. I've survived a year without A/C in East Lansing, but just barely. I spent a few hours at lab simply because it was air-conditioned. I even sat in the cold room (40 F) to cool off. 😀

THANKS PRINCESS!! Sorry my directions for the attachment process didn't work..

Count me among those who aren't too excited about their financial aid package. In fact, aid is probably not the right word. Does anyone know if the University Loans are subsidized? I just have to keep telling myself that I know I will value my medical education in fifty years much more than I will value any house I ever own. I guess I should be willing to pay as much for my education as for a house, but for some reason it is a hard pill to swallow. Have fun at second look everyone!

Dude, that is SO sad. Come down here and you can experience some REAL heat. I finally broke down and turned on the AC once the heat and humidity reached into the 80s, but that's mostly because I'm working up a sweat with all of this packing....

P.S. Thanks from me, too, princess. 🙂

Oh I did understand your directions. I decided not to attach because of file size.

Thanks for the gold star dajimmers

How come so many people getting financial aid packages already. I have a long agonizing wait until Second Look. Not fair!

Congratulations on your admission to the University of Michigan Medical
School. Our institution has a rich history and tradition of educational
innovation, progress that continues today in the information age of
medical education. To capitalize on the infrastructure, resources and
state of the art technology here at the University of Michigan we
require that every medical student entering in the fall of 2006 have a
laptop computer. The laptop will be your entry to the unparalleled
educational tools and opportunities here at Michigan while we prepare
you as physician of the future.

The Medical School is currently working with the University of Michigan
Computer Showcase to provide special educational pricing on selected
laptop computers, software and supplies to incoming medical students.
These products will be available for billing via Student Accounts during
a special sale period from approximately mid-May through late June. You
will also be able to make credit card purchases through the Showcase
before and after the sale period. However, please be advised that
computer configurations and/or pricing may vary. For more information
regarding this arrangement, please go to the Showcase/Medical School web
site @ http://showcase.itcs.umich.edu/pages/recs/medschool/

If you need financial assistance in purchasing your laptop, adjustments
can be made within your financial aid budget. Adjustments will be made
in the form of loan only, and must be requested by you. Documentation
of the purchase must be submitted to the financial aid office at the
time of the request. If you have questions, you may contact the
Financial Aid Office directly at [email protected] To learn more
about laptop computing at Michigan please review the attachment. I look
forward to meeting each of you this fall.

You have to ask for it.

I did and I was told about two weeks ago that I would get it at Second Look.

It probably means good things for you. Mine was turned around in just over 2 days. It wasn't hard for them to just sign me up for the stafford loans with quite a bit left to still finance. Hopefully you'll be happy.

I noticed they recommend Dell, IBM and HP computers. I might be getting a Gateway. Anyone else? Is something wrong with these. Not as durable? Which model is a good one to get?

It might be that they have support services (techies) specialized for IBM, Dell, and HP. Or those companies have provided funding to UofM. Or UofM owns stock in them.

I'd ask some students at second look, they'll probably know which ones worked well for them.

It really doesn't matter. Just get a comp that's up-to-date, and you should be fine.

One more last minute question. What are people wearing as business attire on Saturday? Just dress pants and a shirt/blouse? No suits right?

princess,

I was planning to wear dress pants (gray) and a blue sweater. Hopefully that'll work!
