I don't believe it's free, but the website mentions that UMich will provide a modest stipend for expenses. I couldn't find any info on cost though...
The classes are free, but the cost of living will not be completely covered. that's what they mean. I think.

Well looks like they have atleast emailed some ppl of scholarships. I know of one person who got a full ride scholarship (in stater).

also, who else is going to be rocking out at prematriculation weekend with me? i called the other day, and like happydays said, it is first-come-first-serve, and there are still spots left. does anyone know how the housing situation works for it?
I hadn't heard about the prematriculation weekend. What/when is it? I searched for "prematriculation" on the website and found a schedule for an entire week, but nothing about a weekend. Are we talking about the same thing?

The program looked good, but I don't see myself giving up a week of summer for it. I'll be relaxing as hard as I can before classes start! 😀

---- EDIT ---- Okay, I found the info. We are talking about the same thing, though July 17 - Aug 4, is one heck of a "weekend"! 😛

Do the prematriculation program participants work on a part of the curriculum we will all cover during the academic year? If so, do they get to skip some parts when we get to them later, or do they just have a head start on that material?

What!?! Anyone else know of scholarship info?

My wife and I are actually heading down to Ann Arbor to look around tomorrow, I'll let you know if I find anything out.

They probably wouldn't get to mine in awhile. I had to resubmit my FAFSA.

And Sail, there's info on the pre-mat program on the admitted student page. No, you can't skip parts of the real deal.

Spoken like someone who might be anticipating a fat financial aid offer! 😉 (And rightfully so.... my money's on you and Q 👍 )

Aren't the merit scholarhips they're giving out now non-need based?

In my case, they'd have to be. I haven't submitted my FAFSA. 😳 So I don't think you're going to win your bet, dude. But good luck to you and dajimmers. 🙂

Thanks.... but I haven't submitted by FAFSA either! 😱 (Still waiting to fill in one final box in the parental info section... 😴 )

Looks like they're definitely giving out the scholarships now - a good friend of mine just received a $100,000 scholarship (congrats again if you're reading this, you lucky b@stard 😉 )...

Just thought I'd let you guys know. :luck:

Oh, in that case, I've already got my bling.

thanks for letting us know there are people getting the full rides. Now the names...so we can convince them not to come. hehehe.

Now I'm waiting for my need-based or "general" $. I just don't know if that's also on a first-come-first-serve basis. Anyone know?

Do any of you know how people were notified about these merit scholarships? email or snail mail? or both? thanks, yo. i'm not keeping my hopes up in any way.

Nah, my friend is out of state and a Stanford grad. Good matchlist by the way...

Yippee... I finally submitted my FAFSA! :hardy:

I'm sure all of that money is going to start rolling my way really soon! I've reserved several wheelbarrows in anticipation of the need to haul all of my cash around. Don't worry; I'll share the love... Ferraris for everyone!

'Scholarships'
-Daniel Remick, M.D., Dean for Admissions

How many Deans/Directors does it take to award scholarships? The process here at the University of Michigan requires at least three Deans and two Directors. We met this morning to decide who among the 350 students who have been admitted will be offered a recruitment scholarship. The group consisted of the Associate Dean for Diversity and Student Development, the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Admissions, the Director of Financial Aid, and the Director of Admissions.

Given the August nature of this body it is a surprising that any decisions were made. There are several factors that go into the consideration of determining who receives money. One of the major determinants is how highly the applicant has been ranked by the Admissions Executive Committee. Applicants who have been very highly ranked are much more likely to receive scholarship money. Since we have recruited students for several years, we are aware how much money it will typically take to convince a student come to Michigan.

But blended into the mix is also our desire to have the appropriate class composition at the conclusion of the recruitment season. With this in mind we do pay particular attention to whether the applicant is a state resident or not, and will use dollars to keep a high-quality resident of the State of Michigan here at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Not that I'll be getting a full ride, but they told us in a chat that all 10 were given, but in another chat they said that there will be 13 more full rides. What???

i got an email saying i got a merit scholarship today! 🙂 (not full ride but nice!!)

i have a question though...is need-based aid calculated independent of merit money? cuz with some other schools, their need-based aid would probably turn out better than the scholarship from michigan by itself. anyone know for sure?

wow i really can't wait til this process is over and i just know where i'm going! ahh! *sigh*

Oh, I hope they keep sending out those $$$ e-mails.

All this talk about recruitment scholarships has me very sad. According to other posts, schools can now see where else we have been accepted, so if, like me, it is no where else, then they would have no need to recruit me cause I have no other options.

I really think this is unfair. I don't think schools should get that info until May 15th. Then they can't use it in decisions for admissions and scholarships.

🙁

It seems unfair on one level, but isn't the purpose of the merit scholarships to recruit? What would be the point of recruiting someone with only one acceptance (except in anticipation of that person getting more)?

They are definitely still sending out scholarship awards. As I posted in the pre-allo forum, I was IN the admissions office today, and they were still emailing people. There was a huge stack of letters set to go out to people as well. They want to email/mail all scholarship info by this Friday, and they are giving out over 1 million dollars in merit money!!! I think this is all independent of financial need, at the moment.

Oh, and lets just say I'm now much more likely to be attending Michigan next year 🙂 . Can't wait to meet you guys/girls at second look!

Thanks for the info!

B,
Any money is good, considering only 40% will get any merit-based scholarships. (more people will get need-based.) Plus, you already got some, so you're part of the lucky minority.

*whispers: Already, everyone else, listen up. We all need to act like a bunch of idiots so that these people will not come, and hopefully the money will be equally distributed among the rest of us. You know what to do!*

dajimmers, how much money would Michigan have to give you to turn down HMS?

It is definitely between the two right now for me. Were I not married, I'd probably go to HMS regardless of UMich's offers. But with my wife, her career plans, and potential future family/expenses to consider as well, I'm pretty set on Michigan now. We'll be revisiting HMS, but I'm really thinking that, even though I want to go into academic medicine, any benefit the Harvard name and experience may give me isn't really worth the cost... May change after we visit Boston, but unlikely. Plus I think I like the Michigan people better anyways.

Really looking forward to meeting you all at second look! And happydays, no cheating!

Part of it is that sometimes I feel like my Umich interview "ruined" it for me at the rest; I loved it so much it was hard to feel enthusiasm for the other schools.

I'm very happy with the way things have turned/are turning out. I absolutely love UMMS.
I agree. I was definitely best prepared for my Michigan interview, and between the interview day and the acceptance video, all of my other interviews were very anticlimactic. I think they do that on purpose! 😉

For me it was just the opposite. The UMich interview/acceptance marked the end of my interviewing season, and it was a great way to go.

That should be no problem for me! 😀
We all need to convey how much we hate married people...especially married people from Mich State. 😀

Does anyone know the address specifically to the admissions office? is it the one on the homepage?

University of Michigan Medical School
M4101 MSI Box 0624, 1301 Catherine Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48109

Just want to make sure before I send my transcripts.

Thanks

Well, on the acceptance letter (uhh, it's not like on the wall next to me or anything 😀 ) it says:

Office of Admissions

1301 Catherine Street
Ann Arbor, MI 48109-0624

Oh, I'll likely show up in MSU green and white, just to make that easy for you

Any more scholarships today? None for me...

Uhoh, I used the one I posted. I did put attention: Admissions Office so I hope it finds its way into the right office.

I got a joke:

dajimmers' got a great big fat one.
I got a teeny, tiny, shameful one.
Chocolatekiss may have one, but don't know it yet...
What is it?

That's right, it's a financial aid package. Dajimmer, your package is really nice!

along those same lines, what if you signed up for the pre-matriculation program? doesn't that just flag you as someone who will definitely be enrolling? no need to give fat (or any) scholarships to those people right? anyone sign up for the pre-mat, but also got money?

I don't mean any offense by this, but (without knowing any specifics on anyone in the premat program or anything much specifically about those receiving merit scholarships) I'd be a bit surprised of the two groups overlapped.

The few merit scholarships that are given are going to the "very top students" that Michigan wants to recruit away from the other top school to which they were accepted. The prematriculation program is designed to give students a little head start or academic coaching before entering medical school.

I may be way off, but I don't picture many students with the grades, scores, and background to have the top schools fighting over them also feeling the need to get a jump on their academic preparation/readiness for medical school.
