Hang in there curly! A lot of people are admitted from the waitlist at USUHS.
 
Does anyone have any insider info on the status of the Army waitlist??
(Silly question i know, but worth a shot none the less)
 
I've been out of town so I have a few quick comments to make about several posts...
- I got waitlisted, Army (letter dated 2/28)
- WHEN i get my acceptance i will be looking for 1/ several roomies
- I am technically nontraditional but am only a year out and not married and can guarantee there will be fun had by the 2011 class

we'll miss ya spursss. To those on the wait list, I think you all have a good shot of getting in. Keep waiting and don't give up till the very end. If you are on the army wiatlist I have heard it moves pretty fast.
 
After very serious deliberations, I've also decided to take another offer that made too much sense to give up. I hope my spot in the Army goes to one of you guys (gals) who is patiently waiting and hoping.

Im starting to think that my 11 years in the Marine Corps and 2 years in the Army National Guard did not adequately display my "commitment to military medicine."

The whole process is very interesting and unpredictable. I have never served in the military (though my Dad was a pilot in the Air Force) but my essays saved my butt. Its hard to say, although previous military service is definitely a plus as it shows that you know what your getting into. If you are waitlisted I think you'll get in. Looks like people are dropping like flys now and wait till May rolls around. People have to choose at that point and I am told a huge shuffle occurs. Good luck!

I'm guessing you haven't received any notification at this point - is that correct? I would not be too concerned with that right now, because for some reason, the admissions staff is extremely far behind in the processing of applications right now. I have spoken with the Director of Admissions, and she told me this herself.

Hang in there. I know it is easier said than done, though!

BTW, I was enlisted in the Marine Corps for 4 years before going to the Naval Academy.
 
Thanks for the support, both you and Fizban. Actually I am on the waitlist, mostly because of my late interview date. But my worry now, is that I have an outstanding waiver request, and according to Admissions, on April 15th individuals who are not already physically qualified are overlooked when filling vacated seats.

Then again BubbleHead I could have just accumulated the stats you did and then there would be no question.

I left active duty USMC in 2002 after serving out my last tour at the Pentagon during sep 11th. So this has been a number of years in the works, there has never been any doubt that USUHS is where I wanted to attend.

Perhaps I should have gotten a commission after I graduated college, it would at least bought me some time on my age waiver (another concern since I am 31).

Either way I hope to see everyone in August!

I actually enlisted 1992, shortly after I graduated from high school. I am 32 now, and will be 33 shortly after the start of med school. Yeah, those years of commissioned service are definitely helping me out with the age thing!

Good luck with that waiver - now I understand your cause for concern. They are not the fastest bunch when it comes to processing those. Has USUHS at least recommended approval of your waiver at this point?

I just got my unconditional acceptance- I'm in an Air Force slot so it looks like I'll be seeing some of you this summer 🙂

I'm from the D.C. area so my husband and I are planning to move to maryland in the next month when our lease ends on our current place in northern VA.

For some background info, I'm 25 and recently married, finished undergrad at UVa in 2003, was a navy brat growing up, and am 99% sure about USUHS (still having a little conflict about USUHS vs. a state school).

Two weeks ago I received and returned a remedial form for the Air Force. Is this a good indication that I made it in? I interviewed in early February (I believe the 8th), and hoping to hear back soon.

That's ok! I really loved MCV when I interviewed there and I'm on the waitlist. I'm totally excited about USUHS and would love to go there, but if I happened to get into MCV off the waitlist in the next month or two it would take me a little consideration to decide for sure. I was also waitlisted at EVMS but I didn't love it when I interviewed. I also love Richmond and have lots of family there, so I wouldn't mind being there for 4 years 🙂

Congrats and I hope things work out for you. Unfortunately, that's not good news for me. I interviewed Feb 1st, and have heard absolutely nothing. Air Force and Navy were my first 2 choices. I called on Monday and they said my file was still being reviewed.

What did the remedial form entail?

the remedials do not have anything to do with status. Dodmerb only notifys the admissions office that you have passed or failed your physicals.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!!

You and all the other folks who have posted in this forum seem like really great people. The USUHS class of 2011 is going to make an awesome class. Everyone is going to bring unique experiences and backgrounds to the school.

When did you interview?

Unless there is another type of remedial form out there that I do not know about, the remedial request only pertains to your DoDMERB commissioning physical. If, upon reviewing all of the information provided with your commissioning physical, DoDMERB needs more detailed information before making a final decision regarding your ability to be commissioned, they will have you submit remedial paperwork.

To be clear, whether or not DoDMERB requests remedial paperwork is not at all related to the decisions made by the Admissions Committee at USUHS. As I'm sure you are all well aware, you can be "conditionally" accepted without being identified as physically qualified for a commission by DoDMERB. The status of your commissioning physical will only have an impact on:

(1) Your ability to receive an "unconditional" acceptance
(2) Your ability to be accepted off the waitlist (see earlier post by USMC2ARMY)
 
Only candidates who are physically qualified will be accepted off the waitlist after april 15th... am i correct?
 
Thats what the paperwork we got from the info session...there might be a lag time. like if all your paperwork is in. you can call to check your status or check the dodmerb website or you can call the admissions office - they are very friendly and helpful!

Lets hope spring is our season! I am first choice AF or navy, so the waitlist is creeping...

I'm with you Curly. I called and found out today that I am waitlisted for the AF. I also stated AF and Navy as my top 2 choices.

Congrats! I know it seems kinda weird to receive congrats for a waitlist offer, but at least that is progress. And, as you have already seen on this thread, people will be withdrawing from USUHS as May 15 approaches. Your chances of getting in are really good!

I interviewed back in October, and was conditionally accepted in November. I had administrative remedials that took a long time- my medical records from prior to age 21 had been archived at the military's facility in ohio and it took about 3 months to get them. Then after reviewing my medical records they needed me to go back to the doc... nothing major and I had no trouble passing but it took a long time.

At the interviews I've gone to I liked the other interviewees and current students most at USUHS 😍

Thanks for all the encouragement!

Now that I have some chance of joining this year's class, I thought I'd introduce myself.

I grew up in California, spent a year in DC during high school (love the area, love the east coast!), finished high school back in CA, and went back east for undergrad in Boston. I got my BS in aerospace engineering, and returned to the west coast to work and get my MS in mechanical engineering. I've worked all over the industry as a propulsion engineer. I've had a lot of fun working on rockets and various other space related projects, but I always knew I wanted to become a doctor. I also always knew I wanted to serve in the military. I was still working full-time as I did my pre-reqs and applied. I'm still working, but hoping for a good reason to submit my letter of resignation.

I suppose I qualify as a non-traditional. I'm 27 and will turn 28 in the summer. I run quite a bit, played tennis in college, and have gotten into a little bit of rock climbing since then.

Tomorrow, I'm leaving for a pediatric medical mission in Guatemala! I'm excited! So in the next couple of weeks while I'm gone, I wish everyone the very best of luck. May the waitlist start flowing!
 
Well all, I just found out that I got accepted to my state school by some miracle (University of Washington) so now I have a real tough choice to make. I just loved USUHS and they create some incredible physicians but it is so hard to pass up a top 10 acceptance with in-state tuition. I didn't think this would be so hard.

To all those waiting, I hope you all hear something good in the coming days or weeks (hopefully not months).

I'm leaning towards UW so very soon an army seat may be open to the next in line. I would go USUHS in a heart beat if I didn't have to deal with deploying to Korea or Iraq (or Iran in 10 years). I love USUHS and the education their is second to none. What makes it even harder is the fact that this class is so freakin awesome and I think we would be a tight group of military docs.

I completely understand your concerns. I'm considering another school (if accepted), but for different reasons. Does this mean you are not going to be using the HPSP scholarship?
 
So my waiver finally got approved - and while I've been acting all along like I was part of this class, it is now official. And as I've drafted my withdrawl letter from the favorite state school (tell me how painful THAT was 😱 ) it is even more official.

For those without previous military experiences, spouses clubs aren't really entirely for gossip sessions and shopping. Really. OK - well a little of that goes along, but as a spouse who's weathered a couple long deployments, having someone else who's been in your shoes can really help out. FWIW.

If I go to the UW I will do it to remain a civilian and will therefore not be taking the HPSP scholarship. Personally I think USUHS is a way better deal than HPSP but that's just me.

My 2 cents??? (Not that anyone asked of course!!)

USUHS is a better deal if you have prior service and/or intend on making military service a career. HSPS really is designed for a short term commitment on your way to civilianhood.

I too was working the same decision - if I was going to go to the state school, it would be without HPSP because there isn't much point in putting up with the uncertainties of the military match (or hoping for a deferrment!) without gaining the benefits of USUHS.

But then my basic contention goes back to this: USUHS is a great school for alot of people, but it isn't for everyone. So if military service isn't for you - don't try to fit that square nut into a round hole!! It just annoys those of us who have to watch it. (Yes, I'm speaking from frustration from the constant "MILITARY = ALL BAD" barrage on the military forum......)
 
I couldn't agree more with your last post runningmom. Too many people go into milmed with their eyes closed or just can't be positive about anything in life. I wouldn't want to work with those types either.

🙂 Well, this is not the right forum to vent my frustration (as I'm preaching to the choir here!) - apologies to the stellar group here!! 😍 😍 Obviously that post wasn't aimed at anyone on this thread - just a general comment.
 
I couldnt of said it better myself Running Mom. If an applicant is already skeptical and even worse negative about a military commitment and they havent even begun the journey yet it is probably a good indicator that they should pursue a civilian medical career.

It is kind of frustrating after 13 years in the military to watch people who really dont like the idea of being in the military taking acceptances to this school. I want this sooo badly, it is the only school i filled out a secondary for. I want to serve out the rest of my career in the business of caring for our nations troops and their families, and yet on the waitlist I sit, hoping some kid gets his dream of going to Hopkins or Harvard.

Every on here has seemed to be very sincere in their pursuit of a USUHS education and I appreciate that, I would love to be one of your classmates.

Its just sometimes you read other blogs from military doctors who complain about GMO tours or going overseas, and its like...hmm maybe you should have really done some soul searching when you made the decision to accept this lifestyle.

I find myself getting concerned about certain things when reading the milmed forum here- primarily regarding residency matching.

But then I remember that I don't have a problem with working for a year or two, then training, then maybe working again, then doing a fellowship-type thing, etc... I tend to look for new challenges and new experiences every few years anyways.

Seems like civilian and military medicine each have their fustrations and drawbacks in practice, and it's choosing which frustrations you would rather deal with- I think I might dislike insurance/malpractice nightmares and being a small business owner a lot more. And of course the patient population a doctor would be treating as a military doc are people I'd be honored to care for them 🙂

I am constantly surprised when I discuss my med school plans with people who don't know me well (esp. doctors I know) who say "Oh, well the war will be over by the time you graduate so you won't have to go to Iraq, blah blah blah"... it seems crazy to me. I am definitely going into this assuming that I will, and that's fine with me, it's part of what I'm signing up for.

Can anyone shed any light on the timeline and events between unconditional accaptance and matriculation. As I understand it, we should hear from our respective branches sometime after the AMCAS withdrawl deadline on May 15th, but I have no idea when we will be commissioned or when our orders will be generated. Just trying to get a idea of what to expect in the coming months. Thanks.

I just want to reaffirm USMC2ARMY's post! I am not prior military service but USUHS is the only medical school I wanted to go to. Sure, I applied elsewhere, as any applicant should, but once I got accepted I cancelled the rest of my interviews. I really hope there are not any students in our class who just want a free ride. Everyone on this forum is doing it for the right reasons and I don't want to spend four years listening to someone whine about maybe having to deploy. On interview day, faculty/staff spent most of the time making sure we knew what we the committment was. You shouldn't complain after you make the decision for yourself....
Like I said before, I may not be prior service or have first-hand experience of what milmed is but I am going to go in trying to make the best of it and I will not be the one complaining! I will enjoy seeing you all in August...our class will rock.
 
I just want to let everyone know on here who says they don't want to work with people who complain about being deployed etc.......get ready becuase I haven't met a militray doc yet who doesn't complain about being deployed. What you need to say is despite what others are saying I will have as positive an attitude as I can and try to remain happy and professional despite what other WILL be saying and doing. My mind is not completely made up yet so I still may be seeing many of you at OBC and later at USUHS, we'll see. The military is in my blood I am just having a hard time deciding between two wonderful insititutions.

I love the school so much and would love to be there this coming fall...but I guess it's not vice versa. Just found down that I'm not medically qualified and need to submit a review. It would take another 2 weeks till it could be clear. April 15 is approaching. My status is on HOLD, which means my file is waiting to be compare against the rest of the files who interviewed after me. 🙁 Anyway, if faith meant to be that way, I'll accept it. Hope to see you all, if not at USUHS, then at military residency. Peace 🙂

Best of luck LovableDR!! I am really leaning towards USUHS now. I just loved the school and the clinical years are awesome their. Now I know what you were talking about runningmom, I am in the middle of drafting a formal letter to withdraw my acceptance at UW 😕 I Look forward to golfing with all you golfers at OBC this summer and the rest at USUHS.

Hello all,

I am about to commission through my NROTC unit prior to arrival at USUHS, so I am wondering which uniforms I should buy for day to day wear while at school. I'm pretty sure that I remember someone say they wear CNT's 4 days a week and Cammie's 1 day a week but I'm not sure. Also is it acceptable to wear the poly-wool CNT's versus traditional ones?

Maybe I'm asking this in the wrong thread...

Uniforms are expensive. 😡
