Honestly...Do people get into top med schools with one C on their transcripts???? in a Bio course at that...

a bit bummed....

thanks..
🙁 🙁 🙁

oh no!!! a C!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you're jacked. i wouldn't apply at all. they might come over to your house and beat you over the head with a stocking full of coals (to fulfill your holiday wishes).

p

One C will not kill you. Yes you can still get into a top medical school. Just don't make a habit of C's.

I wonder how many times a year the SDN forum gets this question. Did that FAQ section about applying to medical school ever get going? I hope this question is answered there.

i got a C and 6 interviews. with avg/below avg stats. a good pal of mine made C's in both organics and a gen chem, and he's at his first choice now.

no worries, my friend. C's dont spell disaster by any means.

I never got a C in my life and I didnt get into med school the first time

sorry dude

A "C" is definitely not good, but if you do better in upper level classes and do well on the MCAT med schools will consider that grade merely a fluke. Ignore poloace's sarcasm, just work on bringing your overall GPA up and doing well in your upper level bio classes and yall do fine.

a C will definitely not ruin your chances of getting into a top med school. after i got a C in orgo, since SDN wasn't around 😉, i went to my pre-med advisor with the same question and he said not to worry, he got a c and ended up at cornell. well, he was right -- despite that grade, i just got into a top med school today! (wash U).

as other posters have said, don't let it bring you down, and keep working hard in the other required science classes and the mcat. you'll be just fine! relax and enjoy the holidays!

I got a C in P-chem and ended up at Hopkins.

Hang in there,

R U A URM?

ok - i couldn't resist. it's Christmas we are about about due for an arguement based on race.

Yes, people get in to top places with one or more Cs on the transcript. I suggest you prepare to nail the MCAT the first time you take it. That means a combined score greater than 30, with at least a 10 (preferably an 11) on each section. IMHO, this is what you need, plus great ECs and essay, to get interviewed at a top 30ish school with Cs on your transcript.

yeah, quantum mechanics whupped my arse junior year.

i've at least had interviews at many "ranked" med schools insofar, so i dont think its too bad

besides, as chloe5 alludes to in part, the stats of applicants to top schools (or any school) are important, but only part of the whole picture. you make or break yourself after the stats through essays, ecs, and how well you interview
😎

I got a C and a C+ in orgo and i got a bunch of interview invitations (10 so far - one of them a top ten) so you should be fine. 🙂

hey guys..

thanks a lot guys ..I feel a "tad" bit better, but still the C was in an upper level bio course.

one more thing, science clases you take over the summer get averaged into your BCPM GPA on the AMCAS right?
I know they dont for out school GPA but the AMCAS recalculates it.

oh yeah, I'm not an URM..but good question. heh. Hell I needed that sarcasm, I would have done the same if it was someone else.

thanks again

do a search for previous threads... people do get into medical schools with c's on their transcripts... just continue to work hard!🙂

That's a good question. I too am interested in the answer. Do the courses taken over the summer get averaged into your GPA, at school? on AMCAS?

I did my general chemistry w/ lab sequence in the summer at my university and it got averaged into my university GPA. Other classes I took at another school were just applied as credit and were not averaged into my university GPA. My advisor has told me to count the chem classes into the science GPA, and the other classes into the total GPA, on the AMCAS app. next June. I think as long as they were taken at an accredited university they count.

ok ...I'm pretty sure that getting in somewhere is not out of the question. But a "top 20" med school is what I was refering to.
you all think that my chances at lets say...oh i dunno....Yale per say, are completely shot?
not to start anything big, but to answer someone's question earlier..I'm not an URM. An ORM actually🙄

about the amcas thing, as far as I can tell, the summer courses will count toward the almighty AMCAS science GPA, which is what matters, since what you see on your school transcript is not the same as what med schools see, sometimes thats better...but most of the time I think the AMCAS GPA is actually lower.

Not to be a dick, Jonas (by saying that I am officially a dick), but what difference does it make whether or not you go to a top 20 or not? Top 20. Think about what that means. USNews put an arbitrary (arbitrary in regards to the quality of education) number aside each of 150-some-odd allo schools. Does it matter if you don't go to a school that falls to the right of the first 20 numbers? Is it for bragging rights? Because its pretty damn set-in-stone that so long as you go to a "recognized" medical school (recognized meaning heard-of, US, allo)- your fate is in your hands and yours alone.

I wasn't going to attack until this last post. You said you're confident you'll get in but not at a top-20, per se. By stressing out about it, your admitting to the SDN community that you seek prestige, not opportunity. You want to be accomplished, not in a position to help. Jonas, fellow city-man, my deepest sympathies are not with you. Like I said, I never got a C and I'm back in the applicant pool.

I advise you to try to get into medical school- and seek choices once you've been accepted to x-number of schools. Until then, seek that first acceptance. If you keep this in mind, you will experience total inner peace.

Chill dude.

Then again, you may be part of that ~53% of applicants not to get in anywhere at all.

Uhhh... theres no reason to imply such negativity based on a few grades.

I too am guilty of wanting prestige in a position of helping people, I would be lying if I said I was not. I would prefer to attend a top 20 institution, but I would be willing to go elsewhere as well. That might have more to do with my desire for an academic position though.

In any case, I dont think its too bad to want to attend a top 20 school as ranked by US News. It just represents another goal for people to aim for. You can get a BS or BA anywhere, but people want to get it from a top undergrad school. I dont think its wrong to want an MD from a top med school either.

I wont retaliate to Sham's "flaming," for that isnt the purpose of the forum.

Listen man, yes there are people that want to attend a top tier place for the prestige. That is there own prerogative and I wish them luck. There are also others that have looked further down the road and realize that to get a good residency in certain fields you do indeed need to attend a top school. Or at least it is much easier to get that residency.
It's not quite the same as college, where which college you go to has little impact on the the med school you go to. Coming from a top med school can greatly help you get that competitive residency.
And as far as how arbitrary USNEWS is, you might want to check out the column that says "percent receiving top 3 residencies" and see how well that correlates to the rank of the school.

Let's just put it this way...

I got MANY C's. My transcript grades are ALL OVER THE PLACE. I didn't think I had a chance.

I got in to the University of Maryland. Some of my other classmates with really high grades (all A's and B's) didn't even get an interview yet.

Dreams really do come true!

To Jonas,

1. My post wasn't a flaming. I did not insult you without reason. I'm a realist and I offered my opinion, albeit vehemently.

2. The %age receiving top-3 residency choices a) means nothing because it does not indicate the school's selective pressure to apply to easier programs b) has no correlation with rank with the exception of maybe the top 5.

3. I think people who apply to top programs for the prestige are jaded.

4. Merry christmas.

Read my previous post on this thread. I wasn't negative at all there, but gave some specific reasonable advice on how to be competitive at top 30ish schools. I just disagree with MyName's attitude. Who the F knows if he will be competitive at Yale PER SE? They may not be looking for people like him the year that he applies. Cs on the transcript may have nothing to do with it and either way a more humble attitude would serve him well during interviews.

I think that you will be fine with just one C, especially if you do well in your other upper level biology courses and score well on the MCAT. Adcom members, for the most part, know that we are human and many of us have flaws in our applications. I believe that if the rest of your application looks good, the C will not hinder your chances for acceptance! Good luck!
