Ohio Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hello everyone!
i'm still pretty new to this site but i thought i'd pop by and say that i'm also accepted for 2015! i got an email on monday but with the holidays i haven't been online much--and to tell the truth it was nice after being accepted to stop trolling this site stressed out about other people being accepted!! i don't think i've ever been so relieved in my life. i still am going for interviews in kansas and iowa but i think i'm gonna end up in columbus!! so i'm sooo excited!!

also footie pajama party idea is excellent--i got my boyfriend a pair of those for christmas (including dropseat, thank you very much) and he's obsessed w them

So I'm one of the ones who NEVER got a log in page with status and what not.. does anyone know what my next step should be in activating an account after I received my acceptance.. and how I would go about the scholarship app? Thanks

I got all the links and info from the acceptance e-mail they sent me. Did you get a phone call? Here's the incoming students link: http://vet.osu.edu/education/incoming-class

The scholarship application is on that page.

BTW, having looked back over the thread, I think I was in the same interview group as you. I was the girl from California. 🙂

LoveMyDobies, I sent them an email last week asking for my login info and haven't heard from them. I will call tomorrow and let you know what they say.

And if I remember correctly from the morning I spent wandering around the Ohio campus, the public health building is right across the river from the vet school, so you could still come over and play!

There's a river on campus?!? 😀 That alone is a huge draw (I love living along water)... Anyone know if it's canoeable??

LMMS, I really hope you consider the MPH program and come play with us!

Aw, you're sweet... We'll see... Still waiting on two schools - Cornell and Illinois. I figure Cornell will say no; but if Illinois interviews me I'll be thrilled as they were choice #2 (right behind OSU).

The river totally runs THROUGH campus and is quite canoeable! There is even a place on campus where you can rent canoeing equipment.

Yeah.... canoeable... I wouldn't wade or swim in the Old-n-grungy.... err... I mean Olentangy....

LoveMyDobies, I called today and was given my OSU ID # and was able to set up my email account. I haven't been able to login to the portal yet though, it isn't working for some reason. I don't have time to deal with it anymore today though, the wife want to do xmas returns!

Were you one of the two girls I was sitting with most of the morning?

thanks I'll give them a call tomorrow! Good luck with the return lines

Yeah.... canoeable... I wouldn't wade or swim in the Old-n-grungy.... err... I mean Olentangy....

Yeah, the Olentangy doesn't really look like the type of thing you'd want to swim in. But there's also the Scioto river, which is where my friends and I went wake-boarding* and I didn't get any violent diseases from that one. 🙂

Main campus is actually really pretty for being in a city-area. There's mirror lake and the oval, and the architecture's very pretty also.

*I give myself far too much credit here. I should say where my friends went wake-boarding and where I failed at wake-boarding.

But there's also the Scioto river...

How far from campus is that?

I've heard there is a mosquito bite of a ski hill somewhere in Ohio, ever been?

Mad River Mountain is about an hour away. Never been there... but it's there. (I cannot ski... )

More ski slopes are in Michigan (within about a 3-4 hour drive)...

There are some mosquito bites of hills south of Cleveland. They're not that bad and are part of the same complex. Take a look at Boston Mills/Brandywine. They are probably about 2 hours away. When I was in high school, we would go there weekly for our ski club and then at the end of the season, take a trip to Holiday Valley in NY. Maybe we could organize some vet school ski trips!

Yep, that was me! If I don't get into Davis, I'll most likely be seeing you in the fall! Congrats on getting in, I'm sure completing your masters really helped. 🙂

Still have yet to receive my official acceptance by snail mail. Maybe it was all a dream?

To all other OSU applicants who've been accepted: Has anyone withdrawn from other schools yet? I've been thinking long and hard about some of the other schools that I've applied to and have finally made choices about which schools I am going to withdraw from. However, I am not sure about the etiquette I should use to do so. Which would be more appropriate: e-mail or a phone call? I don't want to come across as rude, but I've already accepted interview offers at a couple other schools (before I found out about getting into OSU) and I'm trying to figure out the best way to respectfully decline. Any suggestions?

I kinda stumbled into my withdrawl from Wisconsin. They sent me an email 2 days after my acceptance at OSU (my #1 choice) regarding my biochem course, saying the biochem I took is not going to be considered equivalent for admissions. I wrote a polite email thanking them for taking the time to consider my application but stated that I will be withdrawing my application due to my acceptance at OSU. I asked her to let me know if there were any further steps I needed to take to officially withdraw my application. She wrote back, congratulated me on my acceptance, and said she would forward my withdrawl to the admissions board. I think a polite email would suffice, but you can always call if you'd like to make it more personal.

And LSD, I too have yet to receive my acceptance letter.....which, although I know it is coming and the holidays have just slowed everything down, I have become one of those :ninja:mailman-stalker people. This cannot be good!

If I remember right, it took about three weeks for me to get my acceptance letter after the call. Don't worry, you're in. 🙂

I KNEW you were just a figment of my imagination...

Chickens in track suits, almost as rare as unicorns and leprechauns.

LoveMyDobies: I was finally just able to log in to the application center. (phew, it really says I was accepted)
When I got my OSU ID # from the vet school yesterday I created my buckeye email account (make sure you get what ".#" you are when you get your OSU ID#, like I'm "mylastname.4"
Once I set up the email account I went to this link: http://appstatus.osu.edu. It was sent in the email both of us never got, but I pulled it up from my email from my app last cycle. That link is the application center, and you log in with yourlastname.# and the password you created when you set up the email account. Hope this helps.

Canoeable! YAY! :woot: Can rent a boat and paddle right on campus?!? Double YAY!! :woot::woot:

And there's another river AND a lake!?!? Wow-wee. You guys are painting quite the pretty picture. That along with perhaps the best marching band in the universe (Penn Staters, please don't boo-hiss me - I was almost a member of the 'Blue Band') and it sounds like a little piece of academic heaven.

Finally, Ninny - wake-boarding takes practice, sometimes lots and lots. I've yet to even come close to succeeding. Hence why I stick to the canoe. 😉

I'm actually quite shocked that there are 3 other people in the WORLD with your last name, let alone at OSU!

My dot number, on the other hand, is mylastname.3258. Very un-unique, although my girlfriend is a .2 so that's pretty cool.

Glad you got your email acct worked out!

Yeah all this helps thanks a lot! I called today from 11am-5pm and the line was busy THE ENTIRE TIME. Hopefully I have better luck tomorrow

ARE THERE ANY SKIERS/SNOWBOARDERS IN THE OSU CVM CO 2015??!!

The Scioto is about a ten minute drive from where I live, which is like a five to tenish minute drive from campus. So it's very close.

Haha, I WAS a member of the Blue Band! And I can imagine wake-boarding takes practice, but as someone who 1. cannot swim underwater without holding my nose and 2. has a tendency to fall, I think I'll just spend next summer enjoying watching others and sipping a beer.

SWOOSH!:hello: I just need to get my skis sharpened...and for that matter, my skiing skills!! I used to ski pretty often when I lived in Ohio, but only went once while living in CA.

YAY!! We'll have to take a study break and go sometime!! I think mad river is what is around columbus.. I've never been there though

One word: Dams.

They don't call it TBDBITL for nothing.... (The Best Damn Band In the Land....)

One word: Dams. QUOTE]

 I drive up W. 5th Ave. once a week for my eqestrian team lesson and there's a bridge that goes over the Olentangy there. I can't help but crack up every time I see the giant sign that says "DANGER! DAM AHEAD!" I'm like...what on earth are you supposed to do if you're paddling away and see that sign? It's going to take a lot of effort to paddle back upstream to avoid the dam.

But I think there's plenty of room away from dams to canoe. I always see people around the Lane Avenue/Woody Hayes Dr. area canoeing or kayaking, no?

I just looked it up. Looks like it is one hour from Columbus. It sure ain't Lake Tahoe, but it's better than nothing! I'm actually on my way to Tahoe this morning, so I'm signing out until Tuesday guys. Have a safe and fun New Years!

Ah-ha! A defector! But good for you!! I kick myself every now and again for not attending PSU... I could have been at the Rose Bowl win!! Yes, I've just dated myself.

And sitting on the banks sipping a beer sounds like a fine summer pastime to me. Less chance of injury for sure!! 😀

Oooo... Dams? Interesting...

Any group that can walk script onto the field is more than allowed to call themselves that (which crazy enough I knew - I'm a BIG band geek).

Technically, the OSU "band" is a "corps," because they don't have woodwinds. I say this as a proud ex-woodwind section leader in high school and a marching band groupie.

Has anyone started thinking thinking about housing? The OSU off-campus housing service has a housing fair advertised for next month...has any current OSU student gone to this? I posted something over in the Veterinary forum about looking for housing, but thought I'd see what my fellow classmates were thinking. Hope everyone had wonderful holidays!!

I was going to start perusing the local paper, hopefully online, around the end of February. I expect I will be spending my Spring Break in Columbus trying to find a decent house to rent. If anybody who's local knows of a reputable realtor, I'm all ears.

Will ask around for you and post any results I come across. Be wary of the slumlords around the eastern side of campus....

www.dispatch.com (Local paper)

Sorry to say I won't be able to offer my house up.... although I may be looking for roomies (still have to figure things out-- silly Masters paper.... almost done but has been consuming every minute of my spare time).

I got so giddy just a few minutes ago when I was on the Incoming Class site at OSU's webpage.... "Classes begin - September 22 at 8:00 a.m. in Dunlap Auditorium" :soexcited: Glad to finally be on the upswing of my "woe is me" funk....

The East Side really isn't all that bad and long as you aren't too far south. I live on 13th Ave. past N. 4th St. and have for almost a year and a half now and I've never had a single problem. I like it back here. It's mostly college students, but the parties are usually a couple blocks towards campus so it's really quiet. I have a nice, inexpensive apartment, a short walk to school, and a bus stop right at the corner. Not to mention free off-street parking, free laundry, and a large dog who lives with me for no extra rent. My landlord is awesome, is flexible if you are a couple days late on rent, and the maintenance people are ALWAYS on top of any complaints. You CAN find good deals if you're careful. Obviously I would never recommend someone live very far east if they plan to also be more south campus (11th Ave. and further south) but I don't want anyone to get the idea that they should write off the entirety of the East Side because there are some really nice neighborhoods further north.

That being said, for those of you looking for a bigger house with a yard, there's one right next to my apartment building for rent. It's a large house with a decent-sized fenced in backyard. There's private parking spaces and I'm assuming pets are allowed because the people that lived there last year had two boxers. It might not be exactly what you're looking for especially in terms of location but if you want the phone number, PM me. It might be a good place to start looking even if it's not what you want.

In other news, I'm finally back in Columbus! Feels super good to be here and as the bus drove past the vet school today I got all giddy! I also arrived to find my official acceptance letter chilling in the mailbox-it's small and unremarkable, so keep an eye out for it. Mine was dated December 23rd, which is the day after I got my email. I already sent in my acceptance fee, so that's super exciting! 😀 It becomes more real by the day!

My east-side reference was well... area from High St to the freeway and 3rd Avenue to Lane Avenue. I know there are some good places scattered in there... but that is generally one area (along with some of the areas on the outskirts of Bexley) that I wouldn't live.

Personal preference, that's all.

Thanks for the links to the papers, penny! (Y'know, I may accidentally call you that in person even tho' I know your real name. I'll try not to.)

I'm hoping to find something west of campus, but we'll see.

Just a happy note: Official letter has arrived😍 I already filled out that little paper, wrote out my check and dropped it off at the post office...think I'm a bit excited?:soexcited:

Looks like we may lose PendantWorld to Cornell.

Looks like we may lose PendantWorld to Cornell.

Yeah I saw that. Bummer, but she sounds really excited about Cornell! But WE don't have to worry about losing YOU to anybody, right? 😀

BTW, what are you doing? Shouldn't you be skiing right now?

That will probably be the case. Sorry guys - I loved OSU, and it would've been great to meet you all, but Cornell is my IS, and I fell in love with it too when I visited. Best luck - we may end up meeting as colleagues someday!

Somehow, some way, PendantWorld, we MIGHT find it in our hearts to forgive you.

😉 I'm KIDDING of course, that's so awesome! We're all very happy for you!

Mine arrived today too and I did the exact same thing! 🙂

Mine was there when I got back to Columbus yesterday! I took a picture of it and sent it to my mom =D Then I immediately wrote the check and put it in the mail, before I paid my rent or credit card. I'm so proud of me.

Got my official letter today 🙂
