What's up at OHSU? This was recently tweeted by an EM attending at OHSU and it has caused quite a stir. Is the program known to be malignant?

White people can be exhausting.
I'm a 100% whiteboy, and I work in the country club ER.

She frequently tweets and is a strong advocate and activist for marginalized groups. Unfortunately, I think her experience has shown that “white people” are often the majority behind the injustice towards those groups. She’s most often quite poignant in her thoughts, however, occasionally the bluntness of her opinion distracts from her efforts to help.

Lol, I don’t think that’s what she meant by the tweet. Definitely an extremely unprofessional tweet from an academic physician with such a large following. I think she was just trying to troll based on her responses to detractors.

Regardless from anything positive she does, change “white” to “black” or “Asian” or “gay” of “whatever” and she’s fired on the spot. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

This shows extremely poor insight. It’s just plain dumb. Even if she is racists against white people, she’s not only racist, but racist and dumb. I don’t see why adults use social media....
 
Human beings "can be exhausting". I've met equally exhausting people of every race, sex, sexuality, religion, etc. As a whole, humans absolutely are exhausting to deal with sometimes. I'm completely unbiased about getting angry at just about everyone.

Right. And black people can be ignorant. And Hispanics can be dramatic. Doesn’t mean it’s ok to say: “all of this racial group is _____.” That is literally what racism is...?

No. OHSU has no reputation as a malignant program.

Dr. Choo is an incredible doc, and a tour de force in gender dynamics in the workplace, health care specifically. She has strong opinions - she is neither dumb, nor racist. Some of the responses in this thread serve as examples of her point.

All well and good, and we "get it", but exemplifies a double standard. That said, I don't give a damn about who says what on any social media platform since I'm one of those who happily abstains from all of them. My life is better that way.

This would imply that everyone that finds her post to be unprofessional on this thread is white (I'm not white, btw). She may not typically be dumb, but her post was really, really dumb.

Anyone who thinks they can post that on social media and not have major backlash is dumb. Just because you’re smart at some things (medicine), doesn’t mean your not dumb as others. Also shows a lot of arrogance - both to think you won’t get fired for saying something blatantly racist and to think you’re above another race.

Seriously, if she said black people are exhausting, or gays, or whatever - she’d be out of a job yesterday. That’s a racist statement. It just is. Just because you’re her friend or whatever doesn’t mean she doesn’t harbor racist ideas. It’s just racist against white people and people don’t have the mental framework to consider racism against white people because they’re not a historically oppressed people group.
 
There were literally people in EMdocs saying “you can’t be racist to white people” lol.

Do you know if the department chair or admin has issued a response?
 
She has disqualified herself from being faculty at any residency program. Can you imagine if a white person said this about any other group of people? Double standard that she has not been fired. If I were a resident that were white, I would feel completely uncomfortable working with her.
 
That is not an uncommon view. Many say that any race can experience prejudice based on their skin color, but the systemic issues of power imbalance and institutional bias are what allows for racism. Hence, the majority cannot experience racism.

I am not saying this is my view. I am just explaining the argument.

It's a human resources conundrum: Imagine if you're her direct supervisor. How do you even start having this conversation about her behavior? In the private sector, she would basically be an at-will employee, but she's a professor at a public university. That changes the bar...

Racist tweets by attendings, 20 attendings driven to leave Emergency Medicine, ED volume increasing by 400%, "harassment, discrimination, and retaliation." Man, I thought my last job sucked. That's got to set some sort of EM record for burnout-inducing toxic hellscapes. My heart goes out to those at at this job hoping for better times. I'm curious to hear the inside scoop from anyone that works there who could post anonymously about the working environment.

Looks like faculty on staff at the same department based on the links. Beyond that, I have no idea. It would be interesting to here an insider's perspective. Another question I'd have is, did this "ultrasound event" at the Lucky Labrador Beer Hall ever happen? Any witnesses care to chime in? From the above article,

"Multiple sources told The Lund Report that OHSU’s human resources department conducted a months-long query into Ma’s conduct that included an email he fired off to staff last July, announcing an educational event on ultrasound at Lucky Labrador Beer Hall in Northwest Portland. It said 'if you are PC and easily offended, please consider skipping this event,' adding that it would contain graphic language, violence, brief nudity and a Guatemalan.

'Food and beer will be served,' the email said. 'The ultrasound probes will not be the only things well lubricated.'

A physician told The Lund Report that the email “managed to offend every minority group in the department.'

Staff reported it to human resources, they said. Sometime after that, the email mysteriously disappeared from their email inboxes though some had saved a screenshot."

I've never spoken to her, but I'm familiar with her academic work. I would guess that a woman who makes her career promoting equity in the work place is probably more familiar with the nuances of racism than the average doc.

Not always. As a non-straight person I routinely get ghosted, or dis-owned by friends co-workers once they find out who I voted for. Even members of the "favored groups" can be suppressed if they are found to be wrong-thinking.

Absolutely. You can lose your favored status immediately if you identify yourself as aligned with one of their greater evils in a way that could threaten their quest for power. Because that’s the real higher power they pray to: Not tolerance, not inclusion, not equality, but Power & Wealth.

The virtue signaling is a smokescreen to cover the quest for Power and Wealth.

Once they've pitted everyone against everyone else, it's easy to manipulate people using "woke" language and virtue signalling. Very sad that these poeple aren't "woke" to the actual threat.....

Yes. They divide and conquer. Form a coalition of aggrieved groups, stoke flames of resentment to bond them together as team members and push to avenge (“social justice”) the perceived unfairness they’ve experienced. Pushing for the “justice” is the smokescreen. The quest for Power for the state and those running it, and ultimately the unlimited Wealth it brings, is the real goal.

And it’s very effective.
