Just curious, for the people who have applied to OHSU, did anyone get snail mail recently? I got a letter basically saying "we are not prepared to take official action at this time" and at the bottom it says i:\continuous review BL. While it's not as bad as a rejection, it's not as good as an interview invite. I'm not sure what to make of it. Has anyone gotten/heard anything? Maybe some insight?

If so, I got that same letter today and they send that letter every year to every applicant who meets the general criteria. Nah I think I got that one already. This letter was saying "they aren't ready to make a decision" right now. I talked to my brother and he said it probably means I'm not competitive enough for the initial batch of interviews. I looked at last years thread and people either got a "competitive" letter or a "not right now" letter.

I've heard of a couple people in previous cycles with the same letter. If you read back a few years I'm pretty sure you'll find them in the various OHSU threads. It seems like they change the status fairly often and bump people up to the better list (especially since they are looking for more and more non residents due to budget issues). Don't give up!!

Definitely. We're still in the first quarter of this app cycle so hopefully it has an upside later on! I'm curious to see if anyone else got OHSU correspondence.

I got a letter today saying about how my application was in a competitive applicant pool, and I will be moving onto the next stage of review...I'm not sure exactly what this means but it sounds like a good thing. I'm in-state also. Hopefully they really can get the ball rolling relatively soon!

Yup, that's the letter I got too. I'm also in state. I had an interview there my first two years applying then no interview last year so I'm really hoping to make it in this year. 4th time a charm?

I personally take this as a rejection. I like to look at dental schools as girls and not right now is what the girl that tries to keep you on the hook would say.

In your girl analogy, not right now might mean there are better guys than you. But if the other guys turn her down, then you become attractive.

There was one of out three on last years thread who got in with that letter.

i got the one too saying you are made the initial screening, and now a pool is competitive (stating all the 1000+ last yr applicants stats) :/ ........... ... ....
i dunno how i feel about it. I am OOS and am not even qualified as a WICHE... ughh

I got this letter too. I would look at it as a good thing. 😛

Last cycle, they did not interview any Oregon residents until January 10th (which is the day I interviewed), but they are quick to let you know if you have been accepted or not. Where do students generally live? I keep hearing about "the hill". I found a few apts there, but if u wanna rent out a house, when is the best time to rent a house? Is rent for a house higher than apts? etc. General housing situ.

When I went for an interview, D1 seemed stressed out (they were studying crazy during the lunch) and D2 seems having fun. What classes are the most challenging in D1 and what are good courses to brush off/review before starting a dental school

And any other general advice/tips for incoming freshman?

If no one is biting than I'll help.

Students typically live on the hill because there is a ton of apartments behind the OHSU campus. Recently, with all the construction on the South Waterfront (where the new campus will be), many students have been renting condos down there and taking the tram up to the hill. Renting is probably best around May-July since that is when the influx of students graduating/matriculating comes. It's typically more expensive to rent a house than an apartment.

At this point, I am just relaying info from friends and family that have gone through the program. First year tends to suck because of Integrated Biosciences among all the other didactic and lab courses. I've heard D2 is arguably worse than D1 but YMMV. If you're looking to prep for D1 now, it'd be prudent to review all your biochem/anatomy/histology knowledge.

I got a few questions for ya.

I googled 'apartment portland OR' only 3 popped up in "the hills". Are there more apts in the area?

What is integrated bio-sciences anyway? I sorta heard that students hate it.

Hey congrats on your decision man! Your account wasn't accepting messages for some reason when I tried writing you back. I have an interview coming up so hopefully it all works out.

The apartments on the hill aren't listed online anywhere for some reason. I've lived up there before and it was awesome. I searched OHSU on Portland Craigslist.

You can try searching OHSU for apartments or you can search Marquam Hill to get listings for that area.
